I am sorry to have to report the death of Frank Winchell. Frank
contributed a lot to the engineering of our TriFives. He became Chief
Engineer of Chevy and introduced many innovations for later model Chevys.
I interviewed Frank a few years ago and he gave me a lot of information
about the Turboglide transmission.
It was developed by his group. I think it is the smoothest transmission
every put in a production car even to this day.

To all the folks out there wondering about changing the VIN number on a
motor vehicle; DON"T DO IT!!!. Don't even bother checking with your state
DMV, it's a FEDERAL offense. It's a federal offense to even be in the
possession of a vehicle with altered numbers. If I'm not mistaken, a few
years ago there was a vendor at the Carlisle, PA swap meet selling original
style rivets to put the VIN tags on Corvette bodies and the feds came
through and confiscated his stock. (JUST RIVETS!!) I know there are a lot
of
guys changing frames but if I were going to do it, I'd at least get (and
keep) a notorized bill of sale for the frame I use.I deal a lot of
motorcycle parts and have heard a lot of horror stories about VIN numbers.
I've never been busted but I make it a point to have paper on ANY part I
handle that has a VIN on it.

Hi, Bob.

I finally took time to go through my emails I had flagged for attention,
and there you were.

We have a restoration shop in Lakeport, California where we do complete and
partial restorations. Gerald 'Pilgrim' Covin has been working on 5-6-7
Chevys for most of his life and knows them inside-out. In the late 1980's,
he built a 5-6-7 hardtop and last year he build a 5-6-7 convertible. It's
licensed as TRI FIVE, and Jerry debuted it last year in Albuquerque.

I'm currently working on a 5-6-7 website as we would like to do more of
those Chevys and move away from other cars. In the meantime, if you get a
chance you might like to check out our website at www.authrestore.com.

Thanks for the opportunity to list with you.

Good day to all. Can any members offer an opinion based on experience
regarding the swapping of rear spring brackets side for side to move the
springs inboard of the frame? Seems to me the 'roll' of the body would be
much worse due to the narrow spring spacing. I want to make room for
Versaille disc brakes (I wastold they would interfere with the springs in
the stock location) and possibly wider tires. Thanks, especially to Bob.

I recently have had slipping problem with my '65 TH400. Because I
wanted to learn about how an automatic transmission worked, I decided to
do some research on the web to see what I could learn. I found a couple
of books that were very helpful. They are, How To Work With And Modify
Turbo Hydra-matic Transmissions, by Ron Sessions and Haynes Techbook for
General Motors Automatic Transmissions. The Ron Sessions book is very
good for operation and testing diagnostic procedures as wells
disassembly and reassembly. The Haynes book provides step by step
photos for disassembly and assembly. I also wanted a source of parts
that were priced right. I found the Makco Distributing Inc. at
http://bulk parts.com and their racing parts site at
http://www.hptransparts.com They have all the transmission parts for
GM, Ford, Chrysler, etc. The books were purchased from Amazon.com for
less than $40. I ordered heavy duty friction's, steels, bands,
bushings, bearings and a TransGo shift kit for less than $200.

There have been several posts recently in which list members have voiced
opinions as to the appropriateness and rationale associated with changing
body
number plates and identification numbers.

Everyone is entitled to their opinions of course, but I'd really suggest
that
one err on the side of caution. While individuals might well rationalize
that
they had legitimately purchased an old car/body/frame or whatever where the
title had simply been mislaid years ago [and that the use of a title (and
numbers) from some other car was therefore OK, this may or may not be the
case.
Absent the presence of a clear matching title, one really doesn't know if a
vehicle has been stolen at some point or not - AND YOU HAVE NO WAY OF
PROVING
IT!

Law enforcement authorities tend to become quite agitated in situations
where
they find altered numbers - and while the statutes differ somewhat from
State-to-State - in all situations of this kind you will likely find
yourself
with significant legal expenses to say the least. In situations where it
appears
that a vehicle has been taken across State lines (very likely in the case
of 45
year old vehicles), one can be talking about violations of Federal
statutes.

Personally, I'd consider any vehicle where I didn't have a clear matching
title
to be a source of parts only - and I'd be cautious about buying such a unit
in
the first place as well. If you ever suspect that a vehicle which is being
offered without a title has a questionable history, I'd be inclined to
pass. The
potential headaches are too great!

And as far as adding stainless and other trim along with renumbering a 150
or
210 to make it appear to be a Belair: this is plain dishonest! The car left
the
factory as either a 150 or a 210. If you want to dress it up, fine. But,
the
alteration of the numbers to make it appear to have been a Belair
originally is
less than honest. Furthermore, you could well wind up inventing a VIN which
was
never listed as being built by GM, or creating one which is a duplicate of
one
already in existence. Either situation is likely to create difficulty in
the
long term. In our increasingly litigious society, one would be inviting a
lawsuit by doing so. I'd suggest that the risk is not worth it.

Dear Bob

Can anyone offer some advice? My 55 Nomad has a Wonderbar radio. Looks
lovely. Doesn't work. I've identified a man who says he can repair it
(and help tune it to UK FM broadcast numbers which differ slightly from the
US I understand). But he doesn't live anywhere near so I'm going to have
to pull the unit out myself (and re-install when it comes back). Has
anyone got any tips? And I know there was some correspondence on the
subject of car stereos recently. I don't want to start cutting large holes
out of the car to fit extra speakers and am happy with a lo-fi solution.
Anyone got a simple set-up that they are happy with and would recommend?

Thanks for the list Bob - and thanks in advance to any / all responses to
this request.

Thank you all for your suggestions about antique auto insurance. Now all
I have to do is get the car done. (Actually, get my husband to finish
the car!) I did the hard part, ha ha. I did price comparisons on all
the parts we needed to fix it up. I found that Double Nickel Chevy in
GA. had the best prices on almost everything we need. We are not
restoring this car to be a show car, just a nice car to take the family
out in on the weekend. It is a 1957 4 door post. And I'm having my
husband paint it iridescent pink!!! Ever since I was 12yrs old I wanted
a pink V W. Now that I have 4 children under the age of 9, a V W is not
practical. The 57 chevy will be great. I can't wait!

Note to Wyatt Smolick re false VIN plate. Do you really think it is worth
risking having your car seized by the state police for having a fake VIN
plate that doesn't belong on your car? In Texas, the boys in vehicle theft

are pretty shape and can detect a replaced VIN plate. Grinding off the VIN

on the frame is no help since it basically can be treated like a weapon
that
has the serial number filed off. To me , its not worth the risk. If you
have the car that the VIN plate came from , the safe way is too replace the

frame with the matching VIN.

Dear Car Club,

Independence Day is quickly approaching, and we are having a car show that
is free to all show cars that attend. It will be held at the Grant County
Fair Grounds in southwest Wisconsin. The dates are Friday, Saturday, and
Sunday, June 29,30, and July 1st. We have many cars attending, and plenty
of room for more. There will be races Saturday night, crafters for the
ladies, food on site, and four radio stations broadcasting from the show.
It should be a great time for all who attend and I would appreciate it if
you would pass this on to your members.
In this the first year of the new Millennium, what has given us more
independence than the automobile? We wish to celebrate it each year on the
weekend closest to the fourth of July.

Jim,

Regarding adding Power Brakes to a factory Power Steering car. One of our
club members installed the master cylinder from a 64 Impala into their 57
sport coupe. According to him, it was an easy bolt up, using the original
57 pedal assembly. He had to fabricate a longer adjusting arm for the
generator/Power Steering to lean it over slightly farther than normal.
This
altered the air space in the Power Steering reservoir which causes the
Power
Steering to be a little noisier than stock but he indicates it all works
great.

I'm hoping one of your list members can help me out with a problem that I'm
having with my '56.

I'm doing a body-off restoration, and have just installed new leaf springs.
The problem that I'm having is that the new five leaf springs are so strong
that they don't allow the shackle to swing downward. At this point, the
shackle is above the frame and will interfere with the body. Does anyone
know of a method to get the shackle to swing down to the correct angle and
stay there? I've tried the biggest crowbar I could find, and that certainly
didn't work. Any help is appreciated.
