In response to Sven Persson, check us out at The Clock Works (
www.clockwks.com ). We can convert your original clock to a modern
accurate quartz movement preserving the original appearance of the clock.
We use the existing hands, face, lens and casing. The set stem will
function as original and the clock hooks up to the existing wiring.
Turnaround time is usually 24 hours and the conversion carries a 2 year
warranty.

We have done over 400 of these conversions for 55-57 Chevy owners!

You will save money by converting your clock versus purchasing a complete
clock outright.

Re your description of the problem you have noted with the installation of
new
(or rebuilt and re-arched) rear springs: it sounds as if you have the
springs
installed on the frame, but that you may not have any significant weight
(body?)
on the chassis.

Even if a body is installed, please keep in mind that new springs will sit
quite
high (just like these cars did when new) for a time until one puts some
miles
on. I'd suggest placing some weight on top of the assembled chassis to see
what
changes this causes.

Consider using a hoist to lower an engine block/crank/head(s) onto some 2x4
wood
spacers to see what effect an extra few hundred pounds has. An alternative
is to
use a floor jack with the lifting pad beneath the area where the ends of
the
U-bolts secure the spring to the axle. Then run a length of heavy chain or
seat
belt webbing from the lower portion of the floor jack up over the upper
frame
rail and secure the free end to the other side of the lower portion of the
jack.
Use padding to prevent any damage to the paint on your frame rails. You can
now
apply some load to the spring (one side at a time). Use caution and don't
overdo
it. Observe how the increasing load increases spring deflection and alters
the
situation. If the leaf spring does not flatten out under increasing load
(thus
lengthening and rotating the shackle away from the body), I'd say it's time
to
re-check part numbers and contact your spring source.

I hope this is of some help.

I am going to San Antonio, TX from July 14 to 20. I was wondering if
anyone from that area could let me know if there are any car related things
going on during that time. Any cruise nights? Even any speciality car
dealers that I might want to check out? We already plan on the tourist
stuff like the River Walk and the Alamo. Other than that I don't know too
much about the area. Any help????

Bob, thanks for the quick response on my plea for a starter. I bought one
at Kragen Auto on Friday and a friend is suppose to install it tomorrow
(Monday 6/11) after work. If it doesn't work (or it's the wrong one) I
will take you up on your offer and come and get it, your price is certainly
better then theirs!! I'll let you know how I make out tomorrow night.
Thanks again for your generous offer. (still looking for a good steering
gear box for the same car) in the mean time I'm switching from the 90
weight "oil" to grease to keep it from leaking out so fast. Again Bob
thank you for all you do for the list members, your truly one of a kind.
P.S. hope to meet you some time and maybe that will be possible now that
I'm closer and have to travel to Fountain Valley every couple of weeks -
relatives there. Bill Ricklef

I would just like to thank all who offered their help with finding a set of
57 chevy wheels, I really appreciate the info.
I have checked around for "new" wheels and also been contacted by others
that had some for sale but have opted to go with a new manufactured wheel
set instead of buying original wheels from guys that had one or two wheels.
I was given a name of a company here in southern cal that makes the wheels
to order for the car. The name of the company is "The Wheel Smith" in Santa
Ana California. The owners name is Bob also. I was given the phone # by
Danchuck. The wheels are dimpled to use with the 57 chevy full wheel cover
as opposed to welded beads. They can be used with Disc brakes as well as
drums and the best thing is that they are brand new.
If anyone else is interested, the number of the wheel smith is:
714-556-3861. They are open Mon-Friday only. The price for each wheel is
$66.00. Hopes this information will be helpful for others.

Regarding swapping VINs and titles: I know of guys out there who have
bought
an untitled car, purchased a title and VIN from an identical model car that

was scrapped or wrecked, and applied it to the car. They even spot welded
the
VIN tag to the car as original- everything looked like it came from the
factory. So basically he has the car from which he bought the title and
VIN,
but has a new body. Sounds fair and square, but I know when you mess with
serial numbers and such, the feds don't like that.

Hi Bob,
In response to Jim London's questions regarding his fuel injection unit,
the unit model (7017320) was used on 1960 Corvettes (290HP) and 1961
Corvettes (275HP). This information comes from the Corvette Specifications

Guide, a publication of the NCRS. I could not find the distributor part
number listed. The distributors for the above mentioned applications are
1110914 and 1110915, respectively. As to the value, I think Bob is correct

that it is in the $4,000 range. Like all overpriced rare parts, the secret

is to find someone who wants it bad enough !!!
Keep up the good work on the list Bob. We all appreciate it !!

Hello,
First I would like to introduce myself. I am Richard Cress and I
manage St. Anton Condos in Mammoth Lakes, Calif., next to Yosemite. I
have had several car groups stay with us recently because of our
location and because of our set up for the safety of their cars. They
want to be close to the sights, get a good deal on nice accommodations
and not worry about their cars. Well, thats us. The groups said we
should let other car people know about St. Anton, so I put a special
website together for PT Cruisers. I drive one and understand about
worrying about my car outside next to the street when I am traveling.
Please take a look at the site I put up and if you think it has any
value to your members, I would love to trade links. Thanks for your
consideration and let me know what you think. The site is

Bob,

I am a Federal Police Officer who has a 57 Chevy and I have to admit the
comments made by Wyatt Smolick are a little disturbing:

"Really this isn't so wrong. It's just like giving a car a another body,
as
long as it is the same style, model, etc. If someone has an untitled car
and
someone else has a title and VIN for a car that no longer exists, why not
affix the title and VIN to the untitled car? You can even fix the VIN # on
the frame so that the government can never know anything happened. What
about people, like me who have swapped frames? Now my frame has a
non-matching VIN #. You can hardly see the number in the first place.
Make
sure you install the VIN plate to look like a factory job.

Wyatt Smolick "

The idea of VIN swapping is just a bad idea. Kinda like walking up to a
sleeping bear and kicking him square in the crotch. Something bad is going
to happen.

Although I do not know the laws of your state (NJ?) but I know which
Federal
law this falls under 18 USC 511 (Altering or removing motor vehicle
identification numbers). 18 USC 511 falls under CHAPTER 25 -
COUNTERFEITING AND FORGERY of the USC. You can look this up for yourself
at
http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/#SECTIONS and enter the section and
code.

If you just do it on your own, you fall under 18 USC 511 (a) (Max time is
5
years in jail)
If you do after getting permission from your state, you fall under 18 USC
511 (2) (c) and all is ok.

My suggestion to you is go the extra mile and contact your local Department
of Motor Vehicles and ask them. Do it right and document everything. It
may cost you a few buck to do it right, but it is better than Uncle Sam
taking your car and maybe putting you in jail.

Just my thoughts,

Dave

--------------------------------------------------------------------
Sec. 511. Altering or removing motor vehicle identification numbers
--------------------------------------------------------------------
(a) A person who -

Hay Bob,
I gotta question. A neighbor has a high performance car that was in a
accident caused by a big gasoline truck. The gasoline company is thinking
of totaling the car and paying the guy off. I want the car! What's the
best way to accomplish my acquisition? Does my neighbor buy it back from
the insurance company (I then write him a check for that amount), or do I
try to buy it from them? This car is a beautie and I don't want to get
things stirred up or I'll find myself in a bidding war. What's the best
way to go? Any help from anyone "in the know" will be greatly appreciated.

The VIN number on a car doesn't really mean that much on the body . I
checked into this a few years ago . The Government uses the VIN on the
frame and the body is along for a ride. I found this out when I wanted to
change a truck cab . If you have a car or truck that a tree fell on or it
is rotten , you can repair it with a replacement body . The catch is you
must use the VIN on the body that matches the frame.

While I can't speak to other states, in Kentucky you can built the car to
the style you want and take it to the Sheriff's dept in your county. They
inspect the vehicle review your receipts for parts used and run the VIN
number on the NCIC computer system. If it comes back not showing as stolen,
they issue a title. Unless you are after an original numbers matching car,
it really makes no difference about how you build the car. I have seen guys
make a belair out of a 210 and it would take a sharp eye to know the
difference, not to mention taking things apart. Just my 2 cents worth.
