Hi Bob.

I would like to mention two things. First, a big THANK YOU to Cliff of
Cliff's Classics in Oregon. My husband recently ordered some important
parts
and the parts arrived at our door the next morning. Everything was
perfect.
Talk about service.

Second, we are selling our custom built Skanner Car Hauler enclosed car
trailer. It is like new, 5000 miles, wide bodied, 6000 lb axels, interior
lights, 24', beaver-tail ramp, only $5995. At many shows, this trailer
gets
as much attention as the cars do. janmowrey@aol.com. 509-966-7835

Bob, One more piece to add to VIN controversy, Many 5-6-7's, at least in
CA..
were originally titled to the engine serial number, (example F55Fxxxxxx)
and
not the VIN on the body or frame, which has in many cases the engine has
long
been scraped. WHAT THEN Friends ? Louie H.

Hi Bob and all you old Chevy folks.
I was wondering if any one could tell me what would be the best lead
additive that I could put in my 57. I have a stock 283 engine that has been
rebuilt and bored 40 over with power pack heads. Some of the stuff I have
priced has been pretty expensive but I also want to
make sure that my valves are protected. I'm also having trouble with my
engine running hot I put in a new radiator and took out the thermostat but
it still runs hot and boils over when I shut off the engine. If any one has
experience at how to keep one running cooler I would appreciate any advice
you could give me. Also once more I am still looking for a original 57
bumper jack and stand if any one has one for sale reasonable please let me
know.
Your Friend
Mike
Lets keep those Tri-Fives Alive

Editor's note. In the late 50s, early 60s when I lived in Annapolis
Maryland I remember a gas company that advertised their gas did not contain
lead. Anyone recall the brand, and how did our cars use that gas if lead
was needed.

Hi, I'm having a problem with my 605 Steering box. I'm able to turn the
steering shaft a small amount each way before the gear inside the box
actually tries to turn the steering arm. I've tried to adjust the play in
it
with no help. Anyone out there have a clue as what can be done to fix it?
It
wanders on the road due to this, and makes it difficult to drive.
Also, what year(s) and donor car carries this 605 box? Thanks for
everybody's help in advance.
Oh, by the way, I'm still looking for 55-7 2 door sedan BelAir side window
stainless, if anyone has any, and would like to sell. I already have the
pillar pcs.,and am just in need of the connecting pcs.

I'm restoring one and want to see what the original looked like. Pictures

To the Leaf Spring problem: You can correct this problem by taking the
Front bolt out of the mounting perch, swing the shackles down where they
belong and reinstall the Front bolt. Should take you about ten minutes.

would be thrilled to no end to know who owns them & to see ANY of them
again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! All were registered in the East L. A. area
between 1955 & '62:
1.(My very first car) '48 Chev. club coupe (dark blue) (1955-7)
2. A '50 Olds Convertible (stock Yellowish/cream color (1957
3. A '50 Olds 2 dr. hdtp. (stock yellowish/cream w/black top)

4. A '55 Olds 2 dr. hdtp (kind of a Salmon Orange & White) (1959-'62
5. A '61 Impala Convertible (White w/red trim) (Late '61-1963)
All would have been registered to me- Richard Ochoa. The '48 may have

Is there a site on the web that shows the seats found in cars over the
ages? A 57 was upgraded to a bench seat with a 40/60 split. Yep, the 60
is on the passenger side. It is just the right height to avoid peeking
above the belt line. The new owner thinks it came from a mid 60's
chevelle.

So now I'm looking for a site that would show me various year's car
seats.

These posts of vins and titling are very interesting. I have a
different twist to ask the panel of experts. I have a 57 2 dr. ht. I
have the body separated from the frame and am in the process of a frame
off resto. The frame and body have the same vin. So far so good! My
question is, the title has the same numbers as the vin EXCEPT there are
three numbers in the middle of the vin # that are different than the
title. I knew this when I purchased this car, and wanted this fixed
before I paid. What they did was get the Sheriff out and he ran
through both numbers and both came back "clean". They gave me an
affidavit showing the title # was clean and ok to license. But the vin
on the car (and frame) is what I need to use right? In Nebraska the car
needs to be drivable to be inspected since it came from another state.
What kind of problems will I have getting the title changed to match the
vin? The previous owner had this car for over 30 yrs in three states
and the dmv only looked at the title. People tell me titles were
screwed up from the factory a lot and fixed later by dmv's. Well panel ,
what do you think? Bill

Editor's note. I knew someone in California that had almost the same
problem. The Title had a number in it that was not on the VIN. A trip to
the DMV to have the car inspected was all that was needed to have this
fixed.

I don't see how or why there is such an emphasis on the VIN # on the frame
matching the VIN on the body. On Tri-fives, I've attempted to decipher the

VIN on the frame but couldn't. I can see a slight indentation where it was

stamped and a trace of numbers or letters, but at least here with PA rust,

there's no way to identify the VIN on the frame. So then guys were replace

damaged frames are doing so illegally? Can anyone prove that a frame has
been changed?

OK, Just to complicate things on the VIN tag replacement. What happens
when a guy takes the sub frame out of a camaro and welds it in to his
55-57. How should this car be tagged? It now has two different frames.
Does it need 4 license plates and insurance on two cars? If you get hit in
front the claim is on the camaro, a smack to the rear and the claim is on
the tri-five!

James Doten inquired about swapping the leaf spring mounts from
side-to-side
to move the hangers inboard of the chassis rails. A friend and I recently
did this very thing with his '57 sedan. It was not too difficult, and he
is
happy with the additional tire clearance it provided, but I am uneasy about
the lateral stability of the car, just as John described. The "posture" of
the rear suspension is altered sufficiently (the springs ended up about 14"
closer together on a stock width rearend housing) that I question the
wisdom
of the mod. I think it suffers with greater body roll and less overall
"tightness" of handling in the rear. I would recommend following the good
work of engineers who designed and manufacture the so-called "pocket kits"
that mount the spring shackles directly in line with the frame rails, so
the
leaves are suspended directly below the chassis. This will get you the
additional spacing you want, without sacrificing quite so much stability.
The cost is significant, but I trust that they were more thoroughly
examined, tested, and proven before going into production. Check out Total
Cost Involved Engineering, Inc., Ontario CA (909-984-1773) who sell it for
$469.95, including new leaves, shocks, shock mount plates, shackles and all
hardware. The same friend and I just finished installing the full kit in
my
'57 Sedan, and he is seriously questioning his decision to do it "on the
cheap." ;>)

So, you think a gallon of gasoline is expensive, huh??

Diet Snapple 16oz for $1.29 = $10.32 per gallon
Lipton Ice Tea 16oz for $1.19 = $ 9.52 per gallon
Gatorade 20oz for $1.59 = $ 10.17 per gallon
Ocean Spray 16oz for $1.25 = $ 10.00 per gallon
Pint of milk 16oz for $1.59 = $12.72 per gallon
STP Brake Fluid 12oz for $3.15 = $ 33.60 per gallon
Vick's Nyquil 6oz for $8.35 = $ 178.13 per gallon
Pepto Bismol 4oz for $3.85 = $123.20 per gallon
Whiteout 7oz for $1.39 = $25.42 per gallon
Scope 1.5oz for $0.99 = $ 84.48 per gallon

And this is the REAL KICKER......
Evian water 9oz for $1.49 = $ 21.19 per gallon
.....$21.19 FOR WATER!!

So next time you're at the pump,
be glad your car doesn't run on
Nyquil, or Scope, or Whiteout!!!!

Hey fellow list members. I just wanted to tell you how generous Bob is.
He has a great collection of videos
of 50s music. I sent him a private e-mail asking him about these videos. I
did not know these video existed as they was not any VCR's available to the
public at the time and they are not in any music stores.

Bob put 10 hours of this music on a tape he made and sent it to me at not
cost.

Thanks Bob. The tape was great. My wife and I are great 50's music fans.
I watched the tape and then wraped it up and gave it to my wife as a
birthday present. She told everyone she knew that that was the best
birthday present she ever received. Even our grandchildren enjoyed it. I
never in my life thought I would see a music video of Bill Haley and "Rock
around the Clock" or Buddy Holly singing "Peggy Sue". Or the Big Bopper
singing "Chantilly Lace". Only a true 50s person will remember these songs
and they will never be done again as all of these singers are dead.

Bob, I bet we are in a small group that remember what comes after " 1 2 3
Oclock 4 Oclock Rock"......

This is a little trivia for people into electronics. Back in the 50s when
I was a kid, I worked as a
radio/tv repair technician. This was before transistors. All sets had
tubes. The first thing I was
taught to check was the filament in the tubes as a bad filament was the
most common cause of a
radio/tv failure. It is now almost 50 years later. TV sets have changed
drastically. In most TV
sets sold today, can you still find a filament. If the answer is yes, what
does a filament do?
