Hi Bob and all you old Chevy folks.
I was wondering if any one could tell me what would be the best lead
additive that I could put in my 57. I have a stock 283 engine that has been
rebuilt and bored 40 over with power pack heads. Some of the stuff I have
priced has been pretty expensive but I also want to
make sure that my valves are protected. I'm also having trouble with my
engine running hot I put in a new radiator and took out the thermostat but
it still runs hot and boils over when I shut off the engine. If any one has
experience at how to keep one running cooler I would appreciate any advice
you could give me. Also once more I am still looking for a original 57
bumper jack and stand if any one has one for sale reasonable please let me
know.
Your Friend
Mike
Lets keep those Tri-Fives Alive

Editor's note. In the late 50s, early 60s when I lived in Annapolis
Maryland I remember a gas company that advertised their gas did not contain
lead. Anyone recall the brand, and how did our cars use that gas if lead
was needed.
BOB
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Bob, I remember American Oil Co. (AMOCO?) gasoline advertised as being
lead free. My father used to use it exclusively in our lawn mower. He
claimed it prevented fouled plugs and carbon build up. As far as I know,
there were never any problems asscoiated with using lead free gas in the
sixties. I do recall that it was the most expensive gas around, probably
due
to the increase in additives necessary to bring the octane rating up to
snuff. I pumped gas back in the early seventies at an EXXON station. We
also
sold a low lead gasoline called "Plus". It was priced between regular and
hi-test. Many people thought it was just an in between grade although I
remember that the octane rating was lower than regular. I'd warn the guys
with high compression engines but most tried it anyway. Never heard any
complaints. Lead in itself doesn't mean a whole lot to the majority of us
old car nuts. It's main use was always just a cheap way to raise octane.
All
other benefits were secondary.
As for you folks with questions about all the possible different VIN
scenarios, you have been told how the laws read. Altering VIN numbers is
illegal, plain and simple. Arguing your point with me and others who know
the law isn't going to change anything. Use your own judgement but
remember, ignorance of the law isn't an alibi. Better safe than sorry.

Re VIN: I hope Wyatt Smolick is not a business man! It appaears that he
has
no qualms about altering the VIN or anything else (make a Belair out of a
210) to sell something.

Howdy Bob On the subject of no lead , remember ETHOL high test
premium gas was indeed white gas or no or very low lead . As I recall
could be used in cadillacs and the like . I'm sure it was used in
55-56-57 chevys as well . And on the subject of overheating tell your
friend Mike to put the thermostat back in and be sure it is a 195 degree
stat . will slow down the flow of coolant and there fore draw off more
heat from the block . In my opinion he needs more fan and quite
possablely a shroud . Sincerely Ernie

In response to the question posted by Wyatt on "the frame is so rusty, the
VIN is barely perceptible."

Yes, there is a process that can resurrect that VIN stamped in the frame
rail.

The rust is chemically removed. The clean metal is then treated to an
"acid wash". The original VIN will reappear as a shadow outline.

The only way to hide this original VIN is to weld over the area. The
welding process will disturb the metal grain - thus eliminating any trace
of the stamping.

In closing, the VIN or the vehicle data plate should not be tampered with.
There are legal and collector vehicle issues that are being tested - and
generally, it is not a prudent idea to do this. Worse case scenario - the
vehicle can be confiscated - and good luck trying to prove the lineage.
"Building the vehicle" into a model/option that it wasn't isn't prudent
either. Someone may be financially harmed by this manuever - and may also
have financial recourse against the seller - if proven that the vehicle was
tampered or reconstructed.

Respectfully submitted,

List Members:
Heres my two cents on the vin number discussion. Yes, the vin number
and the title have to match for the car to be legally correct. But the
frame can be changed. If a car got into a accident and the frame was
bent and the frame had to be changed I see no problem with that to keep
another classic on the road. Parts are taken from many wrecks in
junkyards to make a car whole again. Whenever there is a motor
vehicle problem, they may require you to do a tracing of the Vin number
on the body to match it to the title but never to the frame of the car.
Just my opinion. Donna

with me. My name is Mark Cooley email is cooley@cddn.com and the phone

Bob and Gang,
Mike said, "I'm also having trouble with my
engine running hot. I put in a new radiator and took
out the thermostat but it still runs hot and boils
over when I shut off the engine."
I've always been of the opinion that when the
thermostat is removed, the engine runs hotter as there
is no restriction to keep the coolant from running
through the radiator TOO fast, not getting a chance to
cool. Also, have you checked your timing?
Yes, I do remember what comes after 1-2-3 o'clock
4 o'clock rock. My band does that song at nearly
every performance. What the heck, if we keep doing
the same songs for nearly 40 years, sooner or later we
may get them right! ;-) Take care, -Delivery Dale

HI BOB, The gas you mentioned back east that I use to buy as a kid was
American. I believe it was unleaded and my dad use to say don't use that
stuff to often it'll ruin your motor.The octane was 108 I believe.Remember
it cost a couple cents more,.40cents a gallon.Esso,Sunoco and Gulf at the
time was .37cents for hi-test! Would buy it on Friday
afternoon,payday.Would
climb in that 62 Vette and not get out till Sunday night around
midnight.Maybe two tanks of gas all weekend.Ah, the good old days.

Hi Bob,
Does anyone know Jerry Cabunoc? He has developed a jig for straightening

Any help is appreciated. Keep up the good work Bob.

Hi Bob. In response to the question of what a tube filament does.
It's a small coil of tungstun wire that gets hot and heats up the cathode
of
the tube to enable the emmission of electrons to flow thru the tube.
then with the addition of various other elements in the tube you can
control
the electron flow to provide amplification.

Bob, I believe it was AMOCO. These cars will run on unleaded gas just
fine. If my mind has not completely gone, this was a topic on your list a
long time

Once in a while my retirement planning side crosses over to the 57-56-55
Chevy list side. This is
one of those times. So if you interest is only Tri Five Chevys, you will
probably want to skip this.
Some of you may know that I teach retirement planning here in Southern
California. What
follows is something I was reminded of by a TV show I saw recently. A 60
something year-old
woman found a home movie of her dad on his wedding day. She said it was
now her most
valuable possession. I understand what she is talking about. Ask anyone
if they would like to
have a video of their parents and/or grand parents when they were young and
you will get the
same answer. "YES". Most people, me included, would love to have a video
of their
parents/grand parents at any age.

You can give your self and your children a great present by having someone
interview you
about your life. If you do not have a video camera, you can rent one or
better yet have a
professional video person tape you while you are being interviewed about
your life. Start at birth
and go through the present. You can have copies made of the video for
your children. I can
guarantee you that this video will become one of their most prized
possessions.

I have been interviewing people on video tape for many years. As the years
pass, these videos
become more valuable. After the people have passed away, these tapes
become priceless. Their
children would not part with them for any amount of money. I also suggest
that if you have
children, you video tape them at least once a year. Just discuss what they
have done the last year
and what they want to do the next year. You will be creating history that
will last several
generations.

BOB
