Question, does anyone know a site that offers custom wheels for my 57? I'm
running P225/70 R14's now and would like to go modern with a set of 18" or
20" chrome rims with low profile tires. What parameters am I looking at,
has anyone out there done this, I need some guidance...Thanks

Hi Bob,
I think all your California list members better get busy quick! Assembly
Bill 1390 has passed the assembly and moved to the Senate for
consideration. This bill would give motorists in certain areas, who scrap
their pre-1970 vehicles, at least $2500 towards purchasing a newer car. The
bill ignores all proven arguments against scrappage.
I thought the politicians in Maryland were bad! You California folks
have some real goofs! CARB is just as bad and they're probably behind this
bill. They know that if they don't try something, even if it doesn't work,
their cushy jobs will be in jeopardy. You all better start calling your
state senators! For more information on this bill contact Brian Caudill at
brianc@sema.com Wild BIll

I'm looking for an out-of-print book titled "Chevrolet '55-'56 Restoration
Guide" from Motorbooks. I'm listed on Amazon.com, but no success so far.
Does anyone out there have one to sell? If so, drop me an e-mail. Also,
what
is the correct color for the steering parts - idler arm, steering link,
etc.
I've heard natural and flat black. Which is right? Thanks, David Browe

The Dog Ate My Car or It Could Only Happen to a Corvette

By Dale Foust

My 1987 coupe has been undergoing some improvements and upgrades as my son
and I prepared to run Silver State again in May. My garage is not a great
place to do any significant work on a car so I took it to my son's shop in
Bakersfield. Since it has been there a supercharger has been added along
with a high pressure fuel pump and some additional instrumentation. The car
is coming along nicely.

Like many shops, at least in Bakersfield, large dogs are turned loose in
the
fenced shop parking area to discourage casual thieves that may be attracted
to the odd Corvette left resting there. There has been three dogs on guard
for years, two Great Danes and an Irish Setter. These dogs are large and
intimidating but not very good at being watch dogs. They routinely approach
strangers with tails wagging in hopes of getting a treat and no thought of
actually warding off an intruder.

A few months ago an injured Pit Bull wandered onto the property and was
adopted by my son's family. It had been in a fight but the wounds soon
healed and the new dog, "Shadow" joined the guard dog team

As it turned out there was one intruder that was routinely chased from the
area, a small ground squirrel. It was great sport for the dogs to chase the
little guy about the lot and eventually to the hole under the fence from
which he escaped unharmed.

The problem occurred when the new dog joined the chase as she proved to be
more dedicated and capable. She blocked the escape route and the squirrel,
now in full panic headed for the wheel well of my 87. When the dogs arrived
it was obvious that Shadows head would not fit between the tire and the
fender so the dog began to solve the problem. In a series of powerful bites
by those big, strong Pit Bull jaws, pieces of my fender began to be
removed.
The other dogs joined in by scratching most of the forward drivers side of
the car.

The car is currently being evaluated for corrective surgery at a local body
shop. My daughter in law was traumatized by the mess the dog made and then
again when she realized she had to call and tell me what happened. After a
week or two I am still working hard to think of this as funny. We may show
up at Ely with patches and primer if matching paint cannot be found by
them.

You now know you must protect your Vette from yet another threat, dogs can
eat your car.

Oh, bye the way, the squirrel got away.

Bob & all list members,

While I am new at the car restoration game, I am
already thinking about my next project. I am a fireman
and like the idea of getting a Tri-Five and fixing it
up like a Fire Chief's vehicle. Now I have seen some
pictures of old fire vehicles but God only knows
where. I was wondering if any of the list members may
have pictures they would be willing to e-mail me or
could point me in the direction of web sites that may
have them?

Along those same lines........my current and first
project is a 56 4dr wagon. I can find plenty of
information on the Nomads and other 2 dr wagons but
does anyone know places to find material regarding the
4dr versions? I do not have the 9 seater. Being new at
this, I need all the comparison material I can gather.
I have also seen a CD set that is supposed to have all
the manuals on it. Has anybody purchased this CD and
is it any good?

Thanks for the help and keep on crusin

Bob, I have a '57 210 2dr no post (hardtop) that I had just finished
putting together when somebody hit me. The damage is where the front
passenger door meets the fender, so I'm looking for a passenger door that's
in good condition and I'd like to find the stainless front and rear window
trim for the same car. If anybody has one, or both please contact me at
eghertner@earthlink.net. I really want to get the car back on the street!
Thanks

Bob:
One of your list members once suggested a "hidden trailer hitch" for my
Nomad when I asked about where to put it. I recently did exactly as he
suggested. It was installed yesterday so that the 2" receiver comes out
right underneath the (now) hinged license plate frame mounted to the rear
bumper. You never would know their is a 3" hole cut in the bumper right
behind the license plate until you lift it up to place the hitch in the
receiver. The job was done very cleanly by Plaza Muffler and Hitch on the
Orange Circle in Orange, California. With the extra hidden bracing (2"
square steel tubing), the hitch will pull 2000 pounds and bear a maximum of
200 lbs of tongue weight--not huge, but adequate for a small travel
(Mullins)or motorcycle trailer. The work was very reasonably priced and
good quality. I'm a happy customer and Chris will take care of anybody
looking for a custom hitch (hidden) on a vintage car. Call him at
714-639-6460.

Hello Bob!...First, thanks once again to you for your wonderful
effort in giving all of us this fabulous "get-together!"

...Secondly, in response to your $7000 Bank adventure,
I am not only a '57 Chevy lover & collector, I am also
a retired Bank Manager...I would like to give some free
advice to all Chevy folks on the list that can be important...
always get your cancelled checks monthly even if a little fee is
involved...then, when your statement and checks arrive, the
first thing you should do is go to what is called the
"MICR-encoded" amount that Bob refers to (which is on the bottom right
of each check).
Do a quick audit and compare that amount to the
amount you manually entered in writing out each check,
and verify that no discrepancies exist...Bob is right that
no human being ever sees those entries and mistakes are
more common than one might imagine...'57 Chevys Forever!...

Bob, I know a lot of your readers buy local auto traders or scan their
local
papers for classics so I thought I you may run this for me. I own a 55 two
post Bel Air but I am looking for a 1964 Chevy II Nova to have some fun
with.
Would prefer a low mileage original post, but would consider a hard top or
an
SS. Must be completely be rust free and in A-1 condition. I know this is a
lot to ask for, but I am willing to pay fair value for what I'm getting.
I'm
not looking for the "deal of a lifetime ." You never know, someone who
sees
this may just know of one. I know this is not a Nova board, but hey, it's a

chevy. Drivetrain or location matters not although I live in Texas. I'll
find
anyone's information regarding on your list as I am an avid reader to your
work. Thanks in advance Bob and keep up the good work. Rod.....

Hi Bob,

I wasn't surprised to hear your bank-mistake story. A few years ago I was
a customer of Security-Pacific Bank, here in Southern California Bank of
America bought them (along with just about every other bank out here), so
suddenly I was a Bank of America customer. Everything went fine for a
almost two whole weeks! That's when, just as always, I deposited my
paycheck (bank-by-mail). I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary
until my next statement came. I couldn't balance the account . . . and by
a LOT! After pouring through everything I could think of I noticed that my
$1602 paycheck had been keypunched into the account at $162. Oops! Now
try and get it corrected!

I called my local branch, who referred me to the headquarters in San
Francisco. I must have talked to six people (each with a different
unintelligible accent) before I got to a Super-Supervisor (with ANOTHER
accent). I was told that Federal Law allows them 10 business days to
determine whether an error had occurred. I mentioned several times that
they were talking about my ENTIRE PAYCHECK here, and that I couldn't pay my
bills until they made their "determination". Didn't matter. They took all
ten days to find out that THEY, Bank of America, had made the error. They
finally put the difference in my account.

Needless to say, as soon as the deposit was made I closed the account and
went to another bank. Haven't had any problems since then. Also, haven't
felt like I was making a plea for international relief to the U.N.! Sorry
to hear of your problem, but it seems that all banks don't operate the same
way. By the way, YOU didn't choose who coded the entry on your check did
you? Then it WAS their fault. Go somewhere else!

Don Kent
Northridge, CA

Editor's note. Yes it was Bank of America that did me in. The bank that
codes in the amount of the check is the bank of the person that gets the
check so the maker of the check (me) has no control over where the amount
gets coded.
