OK, what was the last American car to convert to disk brakes? I'll have to
presume that the question is really which was the last American car to
convert
to disk brakes on the FRONT, as there is still usage of drum brakes on the
rear
even in 2001.

I'll have to admit to not having an answer readily pop into my head, but I
recall that Checker passenger cars and taxis were produced in Kalamazoo, MI
through the 1982 model year. I'm sure they had gone to disk brakes on the
front
by that time, but probably considerably later than Chevy and others. I'll
guess
that it was the Checker and that the change probably did not occur until
the
1975 model year. I'm suspicious that this could be the case as FMVSS 105
(the
Federal safety Standard applicable to pass car brakes) had a significant
change
that year. Am I anywhere near close?

Editor's note. Yes, I should have said front disk brakes. As Roy said,
some new American cars still have REAR drum brakes. I am not sure of the
answer. Checker sounds right to me. Wasn't there some
escape in most federal safety laws that if you make less than 1,000 cars,
you don't have to comply
with all safety laws? I have heard that was how the Avanti didn't have to
meet all safety standards.
By the way, I have seen ads for a new Avanti. Anyone know if it is coming
back.

Is the reason some current cars don't have 4 wheel disk brakes cost? Are
disk brakes more costly to make than drum brakes?

I'm reminded of Mark Twain's message he wrote to a newspaper after reading
his Obituary in the paper: "Rumors of my passing are greatly exaggerated."

I just got off the phone with Sandy Nesbit. She called this morning. While
her and Jay have been separated since last October, she has not heard of
any problem. She tells me Jay is out on the road in his RV, seeing the USA.
I checked my source (Drake Restorations in Torrance) and traced it back to
someone who recently talked to Sandy at their Church. Yes, Sandy did talk
to her, but apparently there was a misunderstanding. So pass the word, it
looks like Jay is doing fine! Good news!! Whew! -Jerry:>)

With respect to a quest for photos of an old '55-'56-'57 Chevy Fire Chief's
Vehicle that you might use for inspiration, I suggest that the following my
be
of help:

Log on to the Krause publications website <http:/www.krause.com/>. This is
a
publishing firm in Iola, WI that publishes Old Cars Weekly News &
Marketplace as
well as a number of books and magazines. Anyway, if you click on "Books"
you'll
find that they have a title by Ed Lindley Peterson on old Fire Chie's
Vehicles.
Price is listed as $19.95.

I'd find it hard to believe that there wouldn't be at least some photos of
tri-five Chev's in there, as Ford, Chev and Plymouth pretty much had the
majority of the market in the late 1950's (at least in the area I lived).

Hope this helps.

I don't live in California but I get concerned anytime a state legislature
starts tampering with our right to drive whatever we want. As a regular
reader of HOT ROD, I know there have been, and maybe still are,
private scrappage efforts in California...underwritten mainly by 76
Gasoline
and Chevron if memory serves correctly. Their interest is in obtaining
pollution credits so their factories can go on fouling the air. Can you
say "bogus and disingenuous scheme"? They even took in cars that
don't run, and as I recall, paid $700 cash for your "clunker", running or
not. HOT ROD came upon a '67 Camaro that somebody was turning
in for their $700 bounty, and bought it. Then they took it to a CARB
inspection station and it passed!!

What I think's really going on in the CA legislature is an effort to "do
something", anything to "save the planet", even if it doesn't work...
at least it's something they can feel good about!! Well it's time to
make them feel the wrath of their constituents, to let them know that
they aren't there to run roughshod over constitutional liberties. They
are there to SERVE their constituents, which in this case means
learning about all sides of environmental issues, including the
scientific proof that our planet is NOT in mortal danger!! The
National Academy of Sciences report on Climate Change is just
the latest report to say so...however, the media apparently read
just the overview to the report, picked out the worst-case scenario
based on the most extreme "what-if" computer models, and ran
with it as fact! How do I know this? Because the NAS has issued
a clarification saying so!

Why put all this on the list? Because if ANY of the wacky nonsense
being put forth from the environmental lobby becomes law, we can
kiss our hobby good-bye!!! Thank God for SEMA and their effective
lobbying and information!!

Hi Bob
I hope all the old Chevy people on the list are doing great. Well I have
started another project on my 57 and I need some more help from some one
that is a lot smarter when it come to these old Chevy's than I am. I bought
a TredalVac Power Break unit at a swapmeet and I was wondering if anyone
could tell me what all I will need to install it. When I bought it I got
the TredalVac booster the firewall bracket the vacuum canaster and the
brake pedal. I bought a rebuild kit from Kanter and put it in the booster
according to the instructions. I think that I am going to need some new
brake lines. If any one has a book that shows a picture or diagram I sure
would appreciate a copy. Bob as usual I can't thank you and all the nice
people on this list enough for all the help and advice that they have given
me.
I don't mean to take up so much space here but if I could I would like add
that I got a real surprise the other day. I had the old car out in the
driveway waxing it and three boys came by, they were probably 12 to 15
years old, and they asked me what year my car was. Bob am I getting old, or
correct me if I'm wrong but I know that 10 or 15Yrs ago everyone knew what
a 57 chevy was even the kids!!!
Thanks All

I thought I had posted this but forgot. I need help re installing the radio
in my 62. I took it out but it was never connected. I need to now put it
back but I cannot find the wiring specs for the Delco push button radio.
Can
anyone help!
gwhitrun@mindspring.com

Editor's note. You probably have a 3 prong plug in the back of your radio.
1 wire is for the 12 volt power to the radio. One wire is for the 12 volt
power to a bulb for light and one is for the ground.

I have been on your list for a long time and I can tell you and many of
your list members are fans of the 50's as are me and my wife. Please help
me win a bet with my wife of a night out on the town. (with her of course)

Milburn Drysdale was president of what bank starting in 1962?

Jim Conway

Editor's note. I think it was in September 1962 that Milburn Drysdale
became president of the Commerce Bank of Beverly Hills. However my memory
of 39 years ago could be playing tricks on me. Anyone know for sure?
Didn't he have Jed's 25 million in his bank and was also his next door
neighbor.

Hi Bob,

I enjoyed the article in your last newsletter about the hidden trailer

designed a quick disappearing front license plate for those annoying
traffic control cameras at intersections? I have some ideas, has anyone
out there created one?

We have a 1957 and we put 17" torque thrusts on the front and back from
America's tire co. in Camarillo. They will measure plus double check them
after being mounted on your car so the tires don't rub or interfere with
steering. If they don't fit to your satisfaction, they will make it right
for you. It is a win-win situation. We put low profile Yokohama tires on
the
rims. Hope this helps, feel free to ask questions, Rick McCarthy

A group of senior citizens were talking at the breakfast table in a Florida

nursing home.

"My arms are so weak I can hardly lift this cup of coffee," said one.

"Yes, I know. My cataracts are so bad I can't even see my coffee," replied

another.

"I can't turn my head because of the arthritis in my neck," said a third,
to
which several nodded weakly in agreement.

"I guess that's the price we pay for getting old," winced an old man as he
slowly shook his head. Then there was a short moment of silence.

"Well, it's not that bad", said one woman cheerfully. "Thank God we can
all
still drive."

I'm having trouble with my power brakes on my 1955 BelAir. I have
rebuilt the TredleVac Power Brake Unit and appear to have good pressure,
but my brake pedal does not return fully causing the brakes to drag
slightly. I have replaces all wheel cylinders and bleed all lines.
Yesterday I made sure I was getting plenty of vacuum and that the vacuum
hose was not clapsing.
I have also removed and replaced all the brake pedal parts under the
dash, but when not hooked to the Power brake unit everything moves freely.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Email me at
