Hi Bob
First I'd like to say thank you to all the great people that have helped me
with information and advice since I have been working on my car. Yes I
found Type A trans fluid for my power steering unit. I need to ask every
one
another question gain. If any one has ever put on a set of door edge guards
on a 57 2dr htp How do they go on I think they go under the middle door
stainless but how high up do they go do they go under the upper door
stainless at the bottom of the side glass or just under it. Also I am
making a few changes to my car. I have had a stock 2x4 set up on it for
years but I could not ever find a 2x4 air breather for it or at least one
that I (a poor working stiff )
could afford, so I'm going to go back to a single Carter 4bbl carb. I have
got a air breather and intake manifold for a single 4bbl. Now comes my
small problem with my 2x4 carbs I had a dual point distributor so what I
need is just a plain single point 57 distributor if any one has one that
they would sell reasonable to a (poor working stiff) please let me know
also please, please, If any one has a 57 bumper jack and handle they would
want to sell please let me know I've been looking foe one for quite some
time. Surely out of all the 57 chevys that have been junked, wrecked or
made into race cars someone has got to have saved a bumper jack? Thanks
again to every one for all your help.
Thanks
Mike

Hey Bob,
Thanks for the work on the list, I really enjoy getting it.
In regards to your question about the parking brake on a disc set up:
I have seen them put a brake on the drive line and also a separate
cable on the caliper itself to lock the pads to the rotors once parked.
The neatest trick I saw, (and probably the most expensive) was a
separate little single piston caliper below the main caliper that worked
off the original parking brake cable. It looked really cool, and I guess it
works.
Keep up the great job.

Hi Bob,
I need some more help. Finally fired off the 409 in my 62 Bubbletop only
to
find oil in the water. Most likely I will need a 409 block. Does anyone
out
there have or know of a 409 Chev passenger car block for sale with no
cracks.
I almost threw the rope over the rafters and climbed up on the bench, but
caught myself just in time. I have been working on the car for almost two
years!
Thanks you very much,

Mike,

Do not use power steering fluid in a stock tri-five power steering
unit. Use automatic transmission fluid, the same fluid you would use in a
powerglide. I don't have the type with me right now, but if you need the
specific type just email me at my home address: Marty28447@aol.com.
If you have an owners manual it should tell you exactly the type to use.
Good luck,

We are close to installing a crate 350 small block (330 Hp) in our '56,
210,
2 door sedan. We are having the motor mounts modified ¾ inches forward to
hopefully, accommodate the HEI distributor. Has anyone gone through this
install? The motor that we hope to purchase is the complete from carb to
flex plate, to HEI distributor to harmonic balancer. It's advertised from
Chevy at 330 horsepower. We have also installed a 605 power steering unit.
This motor will be connected to a 700r4 tranny from Bow Tie Overdrives. My
other questions are:
1) What kind of headers are recommended to clear the 605 and with
the ¾
inch movement of the engine?
2) What type of pulley system is recommended? Serpentine or
V-belts?
Long or short necked water pump used? The long water pump comes with the
engine but, if I go with the serpentine system I would need the reverse
flow.
3) How do you like this motor?

Any and all comments are welcome! Thanks, Bob!

Looking for a drivers side front "fender extension" for a '56 chevy. That's
the piece that mounts between the fender and bumper on the side. Do not
need a perfect one, its going to be painted. Flakey chrome OK, even pin
hole rust OK. Just looking for one that is straight, with no tears in the
metal around the mounting holes and no major rust holes. E-mail me with
what you have. hsieck@unlnotes.unl.edu

A friend of mine, who owns several '57 Chevy 4-dr hardtops, asked me
about
some unusual vent shades/rain shades that mount under the roof rail on
Tri-Chevies, and runs all the way unbroken from front to back? He spotted a

pair on a 4-dr HT at a guys house, this guy in Virginia is selling all his
old classic chevy parts and parts cars. I'd never seen any option like
that,
however my friend called CCCI in Florida, and they said that yes, it was a
factory option, and they had a used pair in stock for sale. I was just
curious if anyone else had ever seen them before. I can't ever remember
seeing this option AT ALL on any of the cars I've seen at shows over the
years, unless this was just a 4 door Hardtop option. I don't know much
about
it. I don't recall seeing it in the option book either, but it's been
awhile
since I cracked that open. Anyway, just wanted to know if anyone else out
there had seen or had a pair, etc. Thanks,

That WINDOWS ME warning may have some truth in it. One thing I DO know,
those new clockworks everyone is installing in their old dash clocks have a
micro camera in them and they are recording every thing you do in that
Chevy! Y'All be careful out there and keep watchin yer back... I gotta
little black felt cover I had made at the needlepoint store down at the
mall to cover my clockface when I need sum privacy, it was cheap and it
works fine. I keep the music up loud too so they can't hear whut i'm
sayin... Next week I'm goin in to have a little curtain installed between
the front and back seat, Mary Lou and her sister insisted on it.

Editor, note. How about that camera in the dome light. Better cover that
too.

Bob,
I sent this to Larry and thought other list members might like to try
some of these vendors for parts. I've seen messages on other forums
downplaying Hemmings in favor of e-bay. Personall, I'll stick with what has
been proven to me to be a good source of parts and literature. I know
several people who have been dissatisfied with e-bay purchases and have
nowhere to turn for help. WB

Hi Larry, Here are a couple of places to try that you may not have.
Ol' 55 East Coast Chevy-213-348-5568 or fFAX 215-348-0560, (PA).
C & P-1-800-235-2475, (www.1chevy.com), also PA.
Impala Bob's at 1-800-IMPALAS or www.impalas.com He also has a '55-'57

JohnChambers Vintage Chevrolet at 623-934-CHEV, (phone or FAX-AZ).
H & H Classic Parts at 501-787-5575, (Arkansas)
I got all these from Hemmings Motor News. There are a lot more.
www.hemmings.com will tell you where to buy a copy in your area. Good Luck!

List member Mike (M477@Midwest.net) wondered if Dexron ATF is a good
fluid to use in the original power steering systems on tri-fives.

Yes, Dexron is as close as you can get to the original Type A fluid. It
has modern additives that the Type A doesn't, but the hydraulic
characteristics are the same. FYI, Type A is still available in some
markets, check around.

Good luck,

Hi Bob,

Mike asked whether Dexron will work in the original power-steering pump on
a '57. I hope so, Mike, because I've been running it in mine for over ten
years! No problems yet. Besides, I don't think Type A is too easy to find
anymore. I'm no expert, but I don't think power-steering pumps are as
fussy as transmissions about what you put in them.

I want to put disc brakes on the front of my 55 Chevy. Somewhere a few
years ago I found an article about using Chevelle and Monte Carlo disc
brake spindles on 55-57 chevys. As I remember they had to be swapped
left to right, right to left to make them work but it was a fairly easy
bolt on project. Also there was mention that a Monza dual master
cylinder with power booster would bolt on in the 55-57 application. A
proportioning valve is needed but that's about all except for the master
cylinder from the Monza.

What I need to know is what years of Monte Carlo or Chevelle do the
spindle/calipers/discs need to come from and what year Monza power brake
booster/master cylinder need to come from?

Please resound to my email address.
Thanks for your help.
