I'm having trouble with a second Treadle Vac Power Brake unit on my '55
Belair. I just installed a new looking '57 treadle Vac unit, but when I
attached the vacuum line to it the brake pedal will not return after
braking (*brakes not released). Without the vacuum line attached the brakes
act just like a normal non-power brake unit. So I took it apart and it was
dirty, but no damage (all rubber parts looked good). After reinstalling
and bleeding the brakes it still did the same thing. Is it possible I have
too much vacuum? I do have a new one way valve in the vacuum line and there
is plenty of vacuum. As a matter of fact it is very hard to pull the vacuum
line off the unit when the engine is running.
Any suggestions.
Thanks, Kim

PS: My old rebuilt Tread Vac is a '55 unit that sort of acted the same way,
but was very sluggish

Hi Bob,
Just replaced my radiator and was starting to start my engine when I
noticed
tranny fluid flowing backwards out of the fill tube. Is this because I
failed
to burp it? It's a 57 Nomad with 283 v8, and auto trans. It sat for 3
months
because of a intake manifold leak (broken carb stud which resulted in
drilling the stud out and it became oversize and I suppose caused the
leak-more on that another time) so while waiting for time to find another
manifold (none found) I pulled the radiator and replaced it with a 4-row
and
shroud. I sealed the ends of the tranny lines and only unsealed them when
ready to insert into new radiator but I'm guessing the empty line inside
the
radiator plus small amount that leaked out when old radiator pulled may
have
caused an air gap! Have you or anyone heard of this and my backwards
outflow
of tranny fluid? Any help or answerers would be appreciated---Thanks ahead
of
time---Martha.

questions: there are plenty of manuals that provide engine casting numbers
for Chevy, and I've gotten lots of info off of the net. Does anyone know
of
any source where I can get manual transmission casting numbers and rear end

casting numbers? How do I determine the exact ratio of a posi rear end?
Its out of the housing, so do I have to count the teeth?
..
Also, other than Hemmings and Old Car Trader, what is a good source to
advertise Chevy parts from 1960-1962? I've got (1962) fenders, steering
columns with the wheel, rebuilt 348 engine, spinner hubcaps for sale..etc.

Have your buddies e-mail me with their needs. e-mail: sulamer22@aol.com

Hello Bob and Everyone,

Thanks Bob for taking the time to run such a great list, it has really
helped me on the road to restoring my 57. Here is my questions, in my neck
of the woods I do not have many choices for having work done on my 57. I
plan to take my frame to a man to do some welding for me. He is the only
one I have found to do the work and I would like to know if the other
readers feel his price is high or normal. He will supply all the parts, to
weld in the motor mounts is $150, to weld in the transmission mounts (for a
700R4) is $300 and for a complete rebuilt posi 12 bolt (my choice of gears)
installed is $1,200. Once again he is supplying all parts I only supply the
frame.
Also, has anyone had their frame powder coated. I tried bead blast some
powder coated parts and came to the conclusion that I was wasting my time.
I would like to know how much I should expect to pay. I plan to take the
frame to them after I do the sandblasting.
Any one in the Abingdon/ Bristol, VA area currently working on a 55 / 57
car?

Thanks for any information and thanks again to Bob

Hi Bob:

I'm not sure what site I'm on right now, but your 55 / 57 list came up.
I'm building a '55 2dr. post
gasser. I'm using a Merlin 540 with a 4L80E trans for power. I want to
convert the front-end
over to a straight front axle and leaf springs. I'm not sure what I'll run
into other than I know I'll
be sub-framing from the fire wall forward with rectangular tubing, possibly
2"x4" mild steel. The
rear will have frame pockets for the leaf springs and supporting a 12 bolt.
I'll be using ladder bars
with leaf spring slider brackets to maintain spring movement without any
binds.

If you can shed some light on my project, I would greatly appreciate it.
Or if I can log onto a chat
site about '55's.

Thanks again for your help.

Antonywilkins: our question to you is: Did you use the proportioning
valve
that goes with the camaro m.c? If you did, check your master cylinder
piston rod to brake pedal, make sure it is not too long and not allowing
the
master cylinder to return all the way to re-energize the master cylinder
each time you step on the pedal.

From: "Sandra Scott", INTERNET:sandyscott@peoplepc.com

MoBoy: You do not need proportioning valve on drum brake cars because the
springs on the brake shoes return the wheel cylinders. A 4-wheel disc car
if you still use the proper master cylinder, such as corvette, you still do
not need a proportioning valve. That releases pressure to the calibers
through the master cylinder. However, a disc-drum combination car must have
a proportioning valve to release the pressure to the front calibers.

Greetings to Bob, and ALL my fellow Tri-Five List 'readers,'

Does anyone know of a reputable paint person in Middle Tennessee, Northern
Alabama or Southern Kentucky, who doesn't charge $5,000 to $7,000 for a
decent paint job? No, I'm not a tightwad wanting an Earl Shibe $29.95
"Special," as we've all seen how bad those could turn out, but something in

the $2,500 to $3,000 range that looks sharp.

I still have my '48 Buick Sedannette for sale. Will deliver anywhere for
$13,000.00, and that includes a rare vintage Beach Boys poster from one of
my
'64-65 concerts, worth approximately $3,000! One of my other concert
posters
from November, '63, recently sold to a California collector for $2,500.00.

What makes THIS one I'm offering so special is the fact that I recently
joined Brian Wilson (in Indy) and Alan Jardine (in Kingsport, TN) and BOTH
of
them have signed the poster. It's a very rare collectible signed by two of
the three surviving founding members of "America's Band."

The Buick is a classic "Black Plate" California car, tailored here in '98
and in great condition. No, it's not a #1 or #2 car, but a great driver and

perfect for a restoration or to rod.

If any of you are planning a trip into Middle Tennessee this summer, drop
by
the Cool Springs Galleria on Saturday evenings (rear parking lot, near
Sears), for a great classic car show. Free to the public and, on a great
evening, can have 200 cars of various makes and models. I've seen some
outstanding Tri-Fives, along with a great '39 Buick customized, including a

4" to 6" chop, super paint/interior. Also, two great Chrysler convertibles
from '48, one of which is a Town & Country wood car. Some nights they have
a
'live' band, on others, great 'oldies' from a PA system. It usually goes
from
around 4 to 9 on a typical evening. A great family event. Nice folks.

To Jim McEvoy: I have used Condon & Skelly in
the past for Classic insurance, but, at least when I
was with them, their coverage was restricted to
stockers. Since I have several vehicles now insured
with Hagerty, I was wondering what your beef was with
them. I guess I'm an insurance company's
dream....have never made a claim in 35 years, but
faithfully pay my "dues."
Take care, all. -Delivery Dale

Editor's note. I recently changed my regular car insurance to the Auto
Club of Southern California. One of the questions they ask was "what was
the date of your last ticket?". When I told them I had never had a ticket
in my life, they had to ask a supervisor if they could insure me. It
seems that in California, anyone that says they have never had a ticket is
usually not telling the truth.

With respect to why one needs a proportioning valve with 4whl disk systems
and
not with 4whl drum systems, here's a shot at a simple answer to a complex
question:

The problem is that basically a brake system must be balanced front vs.
rear to
achieve optimum stopping distances. Obviously, weight transfer toward the
front
when the brakes are applied and the vehicle begins to decelerate means that
the
front brakes can take out more energy without locking up than can the
rears.
(This is why the front brake pads or shoes typically wear out before the
rears
on most vehicles). And, of course, one doesn't want the rears to lock up as
that
would cause a loss in directional stability (a locked wheel will slide to
the
side just as easily as in a forward direction).

On simple drum systems with a single master cylinder (such as originally on
'55-'57 Chevys this balancing was accomplished by tailoring the sizes of
the
wheel cylinders. Hydraulic pressure is equal throughout the system, but
increasing the area over which the pressure acts (with a larger diameter in
the
front brake wheel cylinders) will produce a larger force. In addition to
this,
drum brakes have a primary and a secondary shoe, with the geometry of the
anchor
points being arranged such that the amount of self-energization can be
tailored
as well. The variation in wheel cylinder diameter is the basic means of
achieving balance though - the point being that balance is achieved through
design of components in the basic system.

Disk brakes have no means for effecting any self-energization. For this
reason,
line pressures needed for actuating a disk brake are higher than for a
drum.
Hence, proportioning valves came into use when front disk/rear drum systems
began to come into use around the late sixties. With the shift to 4 wheel
disk
systems in more recent years, the need for achieving front/rear balancing
still
exists. While some balancing could be achieved through tailoring the
cylinder
bore diameter in the calipers, it is far more economical to use a single
caliper
for a number of applications and to use different proportioning valves to
achieve the desired balance.

Using an anti-lock system (ABS) which senses wheel rotational speeds and
uses a
computer module to tailor the line pressures for each brake individually to
prevent lock-up is another way to achieve balance - and this method is
really
much better in that one has constant feed back so the system balance can be
achieved over a wide range of continually changing conditions (rather than
just
at a single point). This is really why ABS systems have been used on
aircraft
for many years.

Keith,
For your 55 2dr sedan, any sedan or wagon outside sunvisor will work,
55-57. A 2 dr hardtop had the same visor as a Nomad, and a 4dr hardtop had

its own visor. Only the sedan/wagon visor will fit your sedan. The notch
at
the top most corner of the door post next to the A pillar differs between
these 3 models (sedan/wagon, 2dr hardtop/Nomad, and the 4dr hardtop).
Plus,
the roofline is slightly lower on a hardtop than a sedan. I have a
sunvisor
from a sedan on my wagon. But I know a hardtop visor won't work on your
sedan. You may be able to get to fit, but it won't fit quite right. Also,
I
think the sedan style visor is more common, thus easier to find.

I am trying to learn all i can about the 1957 Chevy Bel Air 2 & 4 Door Hard

Top those are my "Dream Cars" the 2 door especially. I have a question
about
the front bumper. I have seen that they come in two different styles there
is the 1 piece and then there is the 3 piece front bumper now my question
is does either one have to do with wether it is a real Bel Air or what or
is
it just something that the after market bumpers only come in 3 piece. I
also wanted to know about the trim on the rear wings of the '57 on top i
have seen that some people say that they have a true Bel Air but the top
trim is not all the way down the wing it is only about 6 inches long where
on others it is all the way down the wing almost to the rear window. Well
