Bill, Classic Chevy has a Wix brand filter, didn't get the number, but I
believe Fram has one also (CA-151), Classic Chevy was asking 14.00 for

help!!, My '55 BelAir just got crushed!!, Not exactly, but close to it.
My garage rafters loaded with years of storage broke yesterday caving in
the roof and doing all sorts of other damage. I need recommendations for
good body and paint shops in the southern California. My insurance company
(Hagerty) said I can go to anyplace I want to get the work done and the
will pay up to the agreed upon value of the car ($10,500) for the work.
I'll probably need to have the headliner replaces to so will need a
good place to go to have that done.
Funny this is I keep this car in the garage to keep anything bad from
happening to it.....
Thanks for any suggestions,
Kim

Editor's note. I have seen some outstanding paint jobs that were done by
Rich Evans, the owner of
Huntington Beach Body Works. His phone number is 714-848-0837. His shop
is at 7680-H Talbert in Huntington Beach. However, his prices are on the
upper range of body shops.

I am selling the 235 six and 3 speed trans that are currently in my 57
chevy. The car has only 88000 miles and is all original. The car is a good
driver and running well but the engine does have a rear seal leak. If
anyone is interested in the motor and trans, you can hear it run and go for
a ride in the car before you buy it. I am selling the whole lot for $350.
Buyer will have to pick it up in San Juan Capistrano, CA. This includes
the generator, starter, air cleaner etc. I am going to replace it with a
350/700R4. Interested parties can call the number below on days or my home
number in the evenings at 949-487-2425. Please don't call past 9:00 PT.

Butch in England, Drill a new hole in the brake pedal one inch below the

Graeme,
If you are going to be on the NY side of Mass, there is a show up in Lake
George, NY from 9/7- 9/9 that you don't want to miss. First of all, Lake
George is one of the most beautiful vacation spots in the Eastern,USA. It
is
in the Adirondack Mountains. The lake sits between mountains. The show is
held in the village, which is at the south end of the lake. They close off
the main drag in town on Fri & Sat night for a few hours so only the show
cars can cruise up and down. There will be over 3,000 cars there, mostly
street rods and customs. Plenty of 55,56, & 57"s to look at!
Best of all, since it is the week after Labor Day, the hotels are half
price! You can get a nice room for $40-60. If you want more info or
directions, let me know.

Subject: 56 Chev Alternator Conversion

This comes all the way from the United Kingdom; yep I'm a Limey but
at least I love decent cars!

I need help, my friends. My 56 Nomad has previously been badly (and
dangerously) converted to a (early 70s?) Delco 10 SI alternator (not
single wire). As a result of this butchery I'm having to do a bit of
a rewire but cannot follow the ruined wiring for obvious reasons.
However, I'm not much of an electrician. I can cut, crimp, solder
etc but the theory side can be a bit of a mystery.

What I'm after is an idiots guide, i.e. which wire goes where. The
SI alternator will remain as will the previously fitted ammeter and
gen/ind light on the dash board. The Classic Chevy Club Intl has
written an article but it omits the dash light which I think is a
problem as I've read that the alternator needs this resistance for
exitation. CCCI has also written a later article and developed a pre-
configured wiring harness but by the time I've shipped it to England
I'm sure that I (with a little help from you guys) could have
achieved the same and for a great deal less.

So how about it guys, can anyone spare me 10 mins?

Editor's note. Car insurance is a strange business. A few years ago my
son's car was badly damaged while it was parked in a parking lot at a mall.
A garbage truck's throttle got stuck and ran into a car in the parking
lot. That car was pushed into my son's car. There was no question (I
thought) about who was at fault and should pay for the damage. However the
insurance company for the garbage truck claimed their truck never touched
my son's car (true) so they should not have to pay for the damage to my
son's car. The big problem was that the car that actually hit my son's car
did not have insurance which is not that unusual here in California. My
son had uninsured drivers insurance so he asked his insurance company to
pay for the damage. They pointed out that there was no uninsured driver
that caused the damage. Since he had to have his car to get to work, he
filed a claim with his own insurance company for collision damage and got
his car fixed. He told the insurance company that the damage was not his
fault. He was not in the car at the time of the damage and did not even
know about the damage until he came out of the mall and saw his car. He
was expecting the insurance company to raise his rates but that did not
happen. I think he was lucky.

In searching the internet, I found the Hawkeye Area
Classic Chevy Club and posed the question listed below. He (Don Janda) then
sent out the info to his club members and to the National chapter to see if
there was any info available. He also suggested that I contact you. Do you
have or know of any info available regarding this type of repair? It would
be appreciated. CARS indicated that it's possible with modification. I
would
prefer not starting this effort without some prior knowledge. I don't want
replicate the same mistakes someone else might have encountered. Thanks for
your help. mike

Sid,

Sell your parts on eBay.com. ebaymotors.com is a great place to buy and
sell parts. It is buyer beware, the smart buyers check the feedback of
the seller to verify they are purchasing from a reputable person, and to
know what parts are worth. Therefore, if you are new to eBay with no
selling or buying feedback, you may find it a bit harder to sell your
items. However, the majority of auctions I watch end up selling for
about retail, or more demonstrating, there are a lot of people who don't
shop around before buying on eBay, and that it is a good place to sell
auto parts, and just about everything else. It can be a good place to
buy parts too if you know their value, factor in shipping, ask the
seller lots of questions, and don't do business with sellers who don't
have extensive positive feedback, or respond well to your questions.
Yes, I'm biased, I own stock, but I have never had a bad experience, or
known anyone who had a bad experience who checked the seller out before
purchasing. Of course, as a seller you don't ship anything until you
have money in your hand, so the worst that may happen is that the high
bidder refuses to pay, or you don't sell your items.

Bob.... for Kim with the treadle-vac problem.... Roger

Have you looked at your check valve? This little item goes between your
tradlevac vacuum canister (should be on the drivers side fender well on a
55....) and the vacuum hose. It actually mounts on the treadle vac unit
though... It is supposed to keep vacuum from releasing out of the vacuum
canister. If this is missing or bad or your canister has a hole in it...
your brakes wont work worth a darn.......
Hope this helps..

I have a 56 Nomad with original factory power brakes but I have a high
performance 350 that makes very little vacuum. My stock power brakes still
work great!!

Brandon,

The folks that claim to have a 57 Bel Air, but the crown molding on the
top of the fins is short, almost certainly don't have a Bel Air. There
are a huge number of people selling two ten's claiming them to be Bel
Air, with many victims of this practice who have purchased them, and are
too naive to know the difference, so you should not believe a car is a
Bel Air if it is missing too many of the hallmarks. Checking the VIN,
and inspecting that the VIN appears to be original is about the only
sure way to tell the model. You may read my spotters guide
http://clubs.hemmings.com/sjcc/spot555657.htm which may clarify some of
the distinguishing characteristics of the different tri-five models. It
is not a complete list of all differences, so feel free to email me if
you have some other questions that it doesn't answer. As far as the one
and three piece front bumpers, they have nothing to do with different
models or the aftermarket. The one piece is sometimes referred to as a
California bumper, but we have a lot of three piece bumpers in
California now. The one piece is more rare, and thus more desirable,
but both are fine on any model of '57 Chevy.

Hi Sandra

We were not one of the clubs that got there early - I heard one group
actually got there Wed night to stake their spot and got retribution for
it. Someone left doggie doo in front of their spot in a pile LOL.

Anyway- we drove into the show on Friday morning- we parked down by the
paved lot by the entrance and our 4 cars had a great time parking together
!!. We met lots of other people and on Saturday the paved lot got so full
it was like having a second show there.

We brought our own shade- two tents, as we do for any show we go to -to
protect ourselves.Maybe you may want to think of investing in one. This
time of year they are about 4100 for an 8x8.

I found that using the tram was a great idea too , to weak around- saved
on aching feet.

Maybe we will see you there next year- just look for our purple 56 chevy
with flames-
