Bob, I need advise on how to hookup a one wire alternator on my '55 Chevy.

I am replacing the original generator. I have tried a number of different
ways but I cant get my ammeter to show it as charging; only discharging
while
running with the headlights on. I had the alternator checked last night
and
it is good. Let me hear from some of you guys who have installed one of
these in a '55.

Bob

I hope you or your list members can help me. At our last club meeting,
there was a discussion of
motors. When I was in high school, my boy friend at the time had a Caddy
and he told me it had
a 4-6-8 motor. He explained that it used 8 cylinders when it needed power,
6 cylinders when it
needed less power and 4 cylinders when it was cruising down the highway.

When I mentioned this at our club meeting, everyone said I was wrong. They
said GM never had
such a motor. Was my boy friend just telling me a tall tale? Did his
Caddy really have a 4-6-8
cylinder motor? A diner at Stuart Andersons rest on your answer.

Mary

Editor's note. Mary, pick out the most expensive steak at Stuart Andersons
and enjoy it. Indeed
GM had such a motor. As I recall, they only offered it for 1 year. I
think they had a lot of
problems making it work as it was not reliable.

Any list members know more about this motor?

This system has been tried and it works in every state. (supposedly)
If you get a speeding ticket or went thru a red light or whatever the
case maybe, and your going to get p[oints on your license.
This is the method to ensure that you DO NOT get the points.
When you get your fine, send in a check to pay for it.
If the fine is $79.00 make the check out for $82.00 or some small amount
over the fine.
The system will then have to send you back a check for the difference,
however here is the trick.
DO NOT CASH THE REFUND CHECK !! Throw it away !
Points are not assessed to your license until all financial trans actions
are complete.
If you do not cash the check , then the transactions are NOT complete.
The system has received its money and will no longer bother you.
This information comes from an unmentionable computer company that sets
up the standard databases used by every state.

Note : I received this and find it hard to believe , has anyone else
heard of this or if it works.

Thanks Bob, this is a fun list to read and participate in. I need to
shorten
my original rear emergency brake cable. It is installed in a Nova rear end
that is in my '55 sedan. Are the cable ends swaged on or silver soldered or

what? What does the group think about heating the end to remove the stop
and
silver soldering it back on at the proper length? Is there a source out
there
that rebuilds cables? I am in FL.

Thanks again, Bob Sanford

Nick (raeber57),
The speedo gear set you need will be drive gear 8642620 (grey 15
tooth)($4.55) & driven gear 9775187 (light blue 45 tooth)($8.60). You
have a ~2:1 ratio & need a 3:1. Actually, this 700R4 gear set is
calibrated to match 215-65R15 tires & 3:73 ratio rear, but there is only
a 2.5mm difference in diameter to the 235-60R15.
There was no 3.70 rear ratio offered for '87 Camaro and probably
would
not be used with an overdrive tranny in any year. That's why it's a
challenge to determine the gear set.
CDM

I have a 1987 Camaro 700r in my 55 sedan. The rear end is 3.70. The
tires are 235 x60 x15. The speedometer reads at least 60 mph too high.
The drive gear on the output shaft has 19 teeth. The driven gear has 37
teeth. I have had much trouble getting a speedo drive gear set with
correct ring and pinion angles to install into the tail housing. If
someone on Bob's list can tell me what two gears I need to calibrate the
speedometer, (part numbers will be necessary) I can handle the
installation end myself.

Competition Cam, headers, Mallory electronic distributor, with the old

2.02 heads. Rather than going with a Holly, I'm thinking of going with a

I'm looking for a good home for some 57 4-door sedan parts. I'm in the
Detroit, MI area, and these are bigger parts, so if you're not close,
there's no reason to read on.

I've got a hood, trunk lid, and all 4 doors. Again, the doors would be for
the 4-door Sedan models.

All parts are in rough to OK shape. The doors all have the glass intact,
except one, I believe has the vent window cracked. The doors would have to
be skinned or filled or whatever, but the hood and trunk probably just need
some surface preparation. The door handles and hood rockets and stuff
would not be something you'd want to save, but they're all still attached.

I can take some photos and EMAIL them to you if you're interested. Let me
know what you want to see in the photos.

I don't want anything for these parts; I just would like to see them get
put to use out there somewhere.

The best time to contact me (besides over EMAIL) would be after 6:30 EST.

Bob,

What does a good driver's side front fender for a '55 go for these days? I
am
not so concerned about NOS -- I just don't want a bunch of dum dum in there

-- and NO RUST. My fender can probably be repaired but I thought I would

I am a new member to your list. I only found out about it from a vendor at
a swap meet.
The list has been very helpful to me doing my restoration. I only wish I
had know about it a long time ago.

Why don't you put an announcement about this list in the CCI and Bow Tie
magazines. I know this list would be a big help to a lot of people like me.

Bill

Editor's note. I am a member of both CCI and Bow Tie. However, I don't
think these magazines have a place for announcements. There was a
discussion about this list and CCI and Bow Tie about a year ago. Some
people thought this list was competition for CCI and Bow Tie and CCI and
Bow Tie were not happy that this list existed. I hope that is not the
case. If CCI and/or Bow Tie want to send information to list members, they
are welcome to do so. This list is for TirFive communications. There is
no hidden agenda on this list and it really is a non profit effort.
