Hi Bob-
This is for Mary regarding the 4-6-8 Caddy engine.
Indeed there was one and I had it on an 81 Sedan De Ville. That was the
only
year it was offered and was supposed to work as Mary described. Some did
work, but most had to disconnect the 4-6-8 mechanism so that it ran on 8
all
the time. It was a simple procedure of pulling a plug that went to the
transmission. I bought mine used and it ran great and got 21 mpg on the
highway until it needed a rebuild at 125k miles. Loved the car. Mary, you
get the steak.
As always Bob, great job on the list.

I got your email address from the L.A. Classic Chevy Club website. I
attended several of your club functions
when I lived in Valencia. I have a 57 2dr. hardtop that I have owned since
78. I am planning on upgrading to disc brakes. Do you or any of your
members know where the disc brake parts come from? I am told the conversion
kits contain 68-72 Chevelle rotors, calipers and power booster. I would
like to purchase the spindles and misc. hardware from someone like Danchuk
and buy the Chevelle parts myself. I work for Carquest and can buy the
components pretty cheap. If you or any of your members can provide me with
some info, I would appreciate it greatly.

I live in Palm Springs Calif. and just bought a 56 2 door 150 Post I am
going
to restore it but not totally original it will be more of a "street
machine".
The body is really pretty straight-it is going to require some body work,
we
are doing a "body off" and powder coating the frame and will replace all
necessary parts.

When I called a local company here that does the body work, paint etc.
without even seeing the car they said they usually aren't worth doing, but
they would take a look at it and give us an estimate.

What is your opinion on this.
Thanks

Hi Bob:
The Cadillac V8-6-4 was in 1981. If you removed one wire, you would have a

decent full-time V-8. It was replaced by the HT-4100. The company I
worked
for at the time had one of each in El Dorados. The 81 was ok but the
HT-4100
blew the camshaft at 32000 miles and about every 12000 after that.

Ray, If you buy the spindles from Danchuck or another quality vendor,
the spindles are boxed with a list of vehicles from which the brake
calipers, pads, rotors and brakelines can be obtained. Make sure when
you buy the spindles that this list is in the box. I believe that during
the late 70's and early 80's, Chevy only used two sizes of caliper on
there cars. The dropped spindles I believe, require the smaller ones.
Note that when you buy the rotors, the studs come in both metric and
standard threads.

Ref the ticket scheme to overpay your fine I don't think it would work
here in AZ.

Most courts assess the fine and points when you appear or send in the
fine. However the money is separate from the points and the courts could
care less that you overpaid. It would be the same as if you overpaid
your water bill. They'll take your money and worry about the refund
later. So my suggestion is to go to driver's school and enjoy the class
to avoid the points.

Hi Bob & Mary-
YES, Cadillac did have such a motor. As I recall it was during the Energy
Crunch of the Eighties, when Cadillac was trying to make a more fuel
efficient engine. 1981 to be exact. I remember a lady at my work who had
one and it was always in the Shop. It had alot of mechanical components
that could fail. Pretty great idea actually, and may come to pass in the
future. Just not reliable with the Eighties Technology available then.

Hi Bob.
I have a 57 Nomad that I bought in 1990. The car is modified some. It has
a 327 engine with the big heads, a Holley 600 carb, BW T-10 traney,
bucket seats and counsel from a 62 Supper Sprot. From the outside it looks
original because it is painted original color and no modifications have
been made to the body.

Now that you know of my car, here's my problem. The tailgate leaks water
bad. I am told that the upper rear glass on the tailgate needs to be
"rearched". I need to know who does this and how to get in touch with
them. All the weather strip on the tailgate is original (never been
replaced). I have new weather strip to put on but feel I should wait until
I get the tailgate fixed.

Any help on this would be great.

Bob, you can't fool me! I know that in the long run
the list is LESS than non-profit, as it is costing you

I think you do have a hidden agenda for your list. Otherwise why would
you put out all of the time, effort, money on this list. Your hidden
agenda must be to help as many people as possible.

The video you sent me of Dick Clark's Beechnut show was priceless and it
was free. Thanks again. When I viewed it, I was a teenager again. What a
great feeling. Seeing Bill Haley, Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Big
Bopper, The Everly Brother, The Beach Boys as they looked in the 50s was
the best thing I had seen in many years. When I told my husband, you were
sending me a 50s music video that was made in the 50s, he said that was
impossible because video recording did not exist then. When I got the
video, he enjoyed it as much as I did but he still wants to know how you
did it. Would you or a list member share the secret of how these videos of
old TV shows came to be made when video recording did not exist.

BOB, please don't edit out what follows. I know Bob and his lovely wife
Mary Ann personally and they are both very nice people. Lets do something
for him for a change. His birthday is September 26th. Lets flood his mail
box with birthday cards. His address is at the end of every list he sends
us.

Jo

Editor's note. Jo, I am not an electronics expert. Hopefully someone can
tell me if I am wrong but I believe before video recording was available,
something called a kinescope (sp) was made of TV shows. That was a process
of pointing a movie camera at a tv set. Now there is a process where you
can transfer a movie to a video cassette.

Hi All,
This is in response to Mary's question about the Cadillac 4-6-8 engine.
The 4-6-8 was a 368 cid engine and was offered in 1981 only, in the
DeVille, Brougham, and ElDorado, and optional in the Seville. It was rated
at 140 hp. The heart of the motor was an electro-mechanical system
developed by Eaton Corp. that opened and closed the valves on two or four
cylinders, depending on load conditions. It was a good idea but too complex
to be reliable. Cadillac continued to use it in their limos through 1984.
Hope this helps! WIld Bill

Bob,

Your memory (on this one anyway!) is as sharp as usual. The 4-6-8 was based
on
about a 368 cubic inch version of the Caddy V8 and was offered for the '82
model
year only. The transitions from one mode to another, indeed, left something
to
be desired.

GM is about to try again shortly, but with a version based on the 6 liter
Chevy
small block that will go only from 4 to 8
cylinder operation.

Side note to Mary: Enjoy your dinner!

As some of you might know, I teach classes in retirement planning. Several
years ago someone
brought the article below to class from the local paper. I thought you
might enjoy seeing it.
What do you think?

BOB

A man was being harassed by a bill collection agency. He told them he was
not the person that
owed the debt they were trying to collect. It was someone with a similar
name. The collection
agency continued to try to collect the debt from him. After many months of
telling the collection
agency he was not the person that owed the debt this is what he did.

He tied up their phone lines. He put out an INTERNET page, distributed
flyers, etc that every
10th caller to the collection agency's phone number had a good chance of
winning 1 million
dollars if they call the phone number and keep them on the line for 3
minutes.

He told the local Right to Life organization that abortions are being
performed at the loan
collection company's office.

He found out where the people that work at the collection agency lived and
distributed leaflets in
the neighborhood that there may be a paroled child sex offender at their
address.

He found out who owned the building where the collection agency has their
office. He told the
building owners that if they did not terminate the collection agency's
lease he will complain to the
city that there were building code violations. He knew that any building
code inspector can
always find some violations that a building owner must fix and usually at
great cost. He knew a
building owner would not be happy about a building code inspector at their
building.

He told the local water authority and the E.P.A. that the collection agency
was dumping
hazardous waste down the drain and that their sewer should be capped to
protect public health.

He told the local police that he had heard that child pornography films
are being made at the
collection agency office.

He put an ad in the local paper that callers to the collection agency phone
numbers will get a free
massage and other services that will help a person relax. He was sure the
local police will be
interested in that ad. To make sure the police saw the ad, he mailed a
copy to the Chief of Police
and the mayor.

He went to the poorest section of town and left leaflets that said that a
company has agreed to
settlement of a class action suit for everyone that had drank Coke and that
the settlement requires
them to pay $1000 to everyone that files a claim and give the collection
agencies phone number.

He sent a letter to all union halls asking their members to support a
REDUCTION in the
minimum wage and gave the collection agency's phone number for people to
call in their support.

He posted leaflets at schools and college that several popular Punk Rock
bands were giving a
concert and free tickets were available at the collection agency's office.

He put an ad in the paper's social section inviting all Catholics to the
marriage of their Bishop and gave the collection agency' s address where
wedding gifts could be left.
