I want to thank Chuck Smith for explaining to me how fuel injection works
on a 283. If you have a fuel injection question, Chuck is the person to
talk to. He is very knowledgeable on the subect. I have seen some of his
TriFive restorations. If you want the best, Chuck is the person that can
do it for you.

Just a point of interest.

If you bought $1000 worth of Nortel stock one year
ago, it would now be worth $49.

If you bought $1000 worth of Budweiser (the beer,
not the stock) one year ago, drank all the beer,
and traded in the cans for the nickel deposit,
you would have $79.

Hugs and kisses to all,

Jerry:>)

Editor's note. If you bought Nortel last year, you probably want to buy
the beer now.

carpet
Tropical Turquoise had Medium Turquoise trim, medium turquoise carpet
Surf Green, and Highland Green had Medium and Light Green trim, medium
green carpet
Colonial Cream had yellow and silver trim, Black carpet
Sierra Gold and Adobe Beige had Beige and Copper trim,Copper carpet
Coronado Cream, Dusk Pearl, Canyon Coral and laurel Green had Ivory and

To Greg in Sydney with the oiled hinges -
A cheap try would be to lightly blow some fine silt (dust) - maybe even
talcum powder? - into the hinge. The grit should create enough friction
to hold the hinge up when desired.

Editor's note. Mark, your solution for the hinges reminds me that as I
remember back in 1955 when the 265 first appeared, it had a bad oil usage
problem. The solution was to put BonAmi down the carb. That cured the
problem and let the rings seat. The dealer where I worked gave strict
orders that, no way, no how was a 55 owner to see that done. So sometime
dirt in an engine is good.

Actually, Bob, the following can be for the list if you so choose. I
thought it
might be more likely to be of interest to you personally though, with your
interest in TurboGlides - and presumably other mechanical trivia.

Anyway, many people have heard of Studebakers' Hill Holder - and many of
them
can tell you how it works. Few, however, know that Chevrolet, Buick, and
possibly other GM Divisions also offered essentially the same thing. GM,
though,
called it NoRol.

Hope you find it of some interest. Have a great weekend!

Roy

Editor's note. Roy, thanks for the info. You are correct. I had heard of
Studebaker's hill holder but not GMs.
What an interesting concept. The company that should have had one is
Chrysler. I can still remember my dad running after his Chrysler with
fluid drive. He forgot to set the brake and the car was on a slight
incline. He looked out the window and saw his car slowly rolling down a
hill.

said "have your car appraised by licensed appraiser" I want someone to
clearly tell me just how a special interest car appraiser gets licensed. I
know that in California a car salesperson has to be licensed and can
appraise used cars. I would never take my 57 to a used car salesperson to
have it appraised so what say all of you on the list?

Bob & all:

Jan (Berry) and Dean (Torrence) still tour and play small venues. I saw
them together here in Reno in (I think) 1994, when they were a featured act
at an all-star review presented during our annual Hot August Nights
celebration. Jan was injured in an auto accident (shades of "Deadman's
Curve"!!) in 1966, which nearly killed him (and totally mangled his new
Corvette). He suffered severe brain damage, and is today clearly
"challenged," but really seemed to get a huge kick out of appearing and
singing with the band when I saw him. He does, indeed, still sing with
Dean, and you can check out their schedule at:
http://www.jananddean.com/tour.html. There is actually a bunch of fun info
on their website, including a neat bio of their 40+ years playing together.
Check them out if they come near your town. . . . their part of the
star-studded show I saw really got everyone on their feet and "surfin'!"

Greg,

The problem you have with your hood not staying up is with the front-most
pivot point on those hinges. Use Brake Cleaner and really dowse that pivot
to remove what lubricant is in there. Don't relubricate that one. The
others are OK to lube. That should make it work right again.

(Listed in the restoration manual.) The car was named Peggy Sue and

Hi Bob,

I am writing this e-mail to answer Frank Dover's (dover57@aol.com) question
about how to keep 57 Chevy hub caps from rotating on Chevelle wheels.
Welding the "nubs" onto the rims is only part of the process. The location
of the "nubs" has everything to do with whether the hubs caps will spin on
the rims. On either side of the valve stem hole in the hub cap there is a
recessed area that straddles the "nubs" which prevent them from rotating.
They, along with the other two on the opposite side of the rim from the
valve stem, keep the hub cap from coming off. It's possible that, if the
"nubs" weren't properly located and sized, they not only won't work, but
have also damaged the recessed area of the hub cap (which can be repaired
with a pair of needle nosed pliers). Proper location and size of the
"nubs" is the only way to solve the problem. GOOD LUCK FRANK

Yes, Jan (of Jan & Dean) was hurt when he drove his Corvette into the back
of another car but he did make a semi-recovery and even joined Dean for
some
more concerts. Only thing was he was pretty messed up from the accident
and
they tried to pull off lip-sinque concerts to recorded music tacks. The
concert fans got wise and were upset. Later the two did some 'live' stuff
again. I haven't heard of Jan's passing away. I assumed he was still with

This message is for Frank Dover. I too have a 57 with disk brakes. When my
hupcaps rotated one of the valve stems was pulled out and I got a flat. To
solve this problem I installed very short valve stems. Now if the hubcaps
rotate, they don't pull the stems out. Maybe this trick can help you.

Greetings from Music City, USA, Bob,

As always, a real delight to get your weekly newsletter. How do you do it?
Lately, I've been putting in ten to twelve hours at the studio, only to end

up coming home and answering e-mail until one or two in the morning!

The 'remembrance' from Bob Kautz was most enjoyable, particularly the part
about "our parents were a much bigger threat than gangs and 'drive-bys'
because their love was greater than their threat." How true.

Like so many other readers, I have lost both my parents, but the memories
or
their uncompromising and undeniable love, still thrives in my heart.
Growing
up with a twelve inch black and white television, nickel cokes, ice cream
cones and donuts, ten cent phone calls (a nickel if you lived in
Louisiana),
and coming home to Dick Clark's "American Bandstand" or Walt Disney's
"Mouseketeers," was indeed a treat.

I recently crossed the Southwest USA on I-40. Every once in a while I'd
slip
off the Interstate to catch a portion of what remains of historic Route 66.

Flagstaff, AZ, Gallup and Tucumcari, NM and Clinton, OK still maintain much

of the 'charm.' Most, however, is lost. If anyone out there remembers Two
Arrows outside Flagstaff, going east on I-40, it's closed now, but the two
arrows are still sticking out of the ground as if to plea with us to not
forget them.

You can still get a great burger at Blake's in Albuquerque, a 72 oz. steak
from BIG TEXAS STEAK in Amarillo, but, sadly, Pop Hick's in Clinton is a
thing of the past. The victim of a fire that completely destroyed the
building. All that remains are the colorful floor tiles that used to
welcome
you into the diner.

Off all the cities along the way, Tucumcari seemed to be the most
authentic.
It still had the 'Mom and pop' hotels and motels, with the fabulous neon
signs, drive-in restaurants, an old movie theater (with ONE screen) and a
main street where the only thing really lacking was a few Tri-Five Cheveys!

Oh, to return to those thrilling days of yesteryear!! With the events of
September 11 so vividly etched in our consciousness, perhaps, a trip like
this is what we need to take the time to take once in a while. I'm planning

on putting aside a week or two to do the same trip again in the spring of
'03. It will be the 50th Anniversary of my family's trip on the original
"Mother Road," Route 66--America's Highway.

As always, good day and great cruising!

Regards,

Fred Vail
Nashville, TN

Editor's note. Was the Big Texas Steak the place that you got the steak
free if you could eat it all?
I have a great video of Martin Milner taking his Corvette from Chicago to
Santa Monica on what is left of highway 66. Anyone remember the TV show
route 66?

Happy Belated Birthday Bob!
(My computer and I were both on the fritz Wednesday)

Really appreciated your Beach Boy comments!
I was told in the 90's how John Lennon was a genius but Brian Wilson was a
dud. I was vindicated about three years ago when Julian Lennon (John's
son),
appeared on a VH1 Music Special about the Beach Boys.
He stated that many of the later Beatles tunes circa 67-70, were influenced
by the way Brian Wilson arranged the harmonies.

Just goes to show, good music is good music!

Thanks again for your time and effort involved in bringing us this list,

Good day Bob and to all of the list members. I have two questions I
was wondering if anyone could help me with.
First, has anyone tried using the power steering box from a mid
seventies International pi
ck-up or Scout? I have heard they are a direct
bolt-in as opposed to the 605's which require some modifications. I picked
one up from a junkyard this past summer and although it is very similar,
the
bolt pattern doesn't match. Is this the case or did I pick one up from the
wrong year and/or model?
Second, has anyone put an upper shock mount bar in a Nomad or
wagon?
I understand the original "wells" have to be removed. If that's the case
how
do you hang the gas tank because the tank straps are hung from those same
brackets (the doubler that backs up the cargo floor where the shock wells
are)?
Thanks, Jim.

Test your knowledge of electricity.

Diane went to Home Depot to buy a light bulb for her home. She told the
Home Depot people that she wanted a bulb that could take 140 volts without
damage. They told her that only had bulbs that could take a voltage of 110
volts or 220 volts and the 220 volt bulbs were not for home use. They also
told her that if the 110 volt bulbs ever received 140 volts it would burn
them out immediately. Diane stated she also wanted the bulb to give off
light when there would be NO voltage to it 60 times every second.

Should Diane be able to find a bulb to her specifications at Home Depot?
