Hi Gang,

I normally come to the members with questions and I have always received
good advise. This time I have something to offer that is a little out of
the norm for this list, but I think some member could benefit.

I have 6 tickets to the postponed NASCAR Winston Cup race in New Hampshire
that will be held this Nov 23rd.
They are all great seats. 2 of them are together in the north main
grandstand and the other 4 are together in the concord grandstand. Anyone
who is interested can have any or all of them for the face value of $100.00
each plus shipping. These tickets belong to a friend of mine and myself,
we are not scalpers, just race fans who can't use them this year. Please
contact my via e-mail jslee55@mediaone.net.

You must have some kind of electrical engineering background. That last
light bulb question was
a good one. I am an engineer and I had to read it several times to realize
that Diane could just
buy an ordinary light bulb from Home Depot. Alternating current by
definition means that the
current alternates from positive to negative. To do that it must at some
time be zero. And if there
is no current, there is no voltage. Diane's request that the bulb give
off light when there was no
voltage on it 60 times per second is not a problem. A light bulb produces
light because the
filament gets hot when voltage is applies to it. If you cut the voltage,
the filament does start too
cool slowly but it give off light as it cools. If you alternate the
voltage at 10 cycles per second,
you would see the light bulb flicker.

I am sure other readers will answer this also but 140 volts peak to peak is
the voltage you would
see on a scope connected to a common home outlet.

I love these questions Bob. Thanks for making my day. You make me think
which is good for
this old brain.

Is the Chuck Smith you talked to about fuel injection the Chuck Smith in
Calabassas? If it is, you are correct about his restorations. They are
the best. He has created several 1000 point cars. What an accomplishment.
I wish I could afford to have him work on my car.

Bill

also.

Hi Bob and others_

I wanted to let you know about a situation that has almost happened to me
and could happen to someone else....

I placed an ad in YAHOO classifieds about needing a car display (you will
see one here too- much the same ad). I immediately received a response from
someone named 'JARED' who stated he had such a display that his brother
made about 6 months ago and would sell it to me for $300 and FREE shipping
(which would probably be at least $50!!) - it was also in good condition.

I returned an email with my extreme interest and asked if he had a
picture-- this is where the story gets strange.

He stated he didn't ! (dont we ALL take 1000 pictures of our vehicles when
they are in shows???) but I could send the $300 to a paypal account
(criticma***r23@yahoo.com) ---I have *** out a few letters so this doesn't
show his full email address-and he would send me a receipt and ship the
goods.

To this I have replied that I wanted at least his full name , address and
phone number in case the item got lost. This gentleman has refused to
provide me with such info and when I did a test $1 sale to his email
address , it lists as only 5 days old for the PAYPAL acct!(and he said it
was a friend's business account!)

I truly believe this guy is scamming and wanted to alert others if the
email address or situation sounded familiar. I havent shelled out more than
$1 and learned a hopefully valuable lesson- GET info prior to the sale. Its
much safer!

Hi Bob,

I was wondering if someone on The List could give me a little guidance
about
preserving a bumper. I was at the Fall Carlisle Show over the weekend, and
I bought a beautiful one-piece rechromed front bumper for my '57 Chevy.
Before I bolt it on, I was wondering if there is anything that I should do
to the back of the bumper to keep it from rusting in the future.

I've had two recommendations so far -- painting it with POR15 or
undercoating it -- but both were just hunches from friends. I was
wondering
if anyone had any experience with using those, or anything else, on the
back
of a bumper to preserve it.

One more item. I'm building a set of heads from scratch, and I have all of
the parts that I need -- except for the cups that fit underneath the
retainers and extend down over the valve springs for about a half-inch. I
assume that I could go to my Chevy dealer and order them new, but I was
wondering if anyone on The List might have a set for sale. The valves are
1.25", so I'm assuming that stock cups would fit over them. I've seen a
lot
of heads done without them, but I'd like to put them on if I can find a set
for a reasonable price.

I'd appreciate any help anyone can give me on either -- or both -- of these
items. You can contact me either directly or a reply on the List.

Hi Bob and Chevy fans:
I thought I would add my 2 cents worth about Jan & Dean. I parked cars
during the summers circa early sixties at a private beach club in Santa
Monica. Dean O. Torrance would drive in in his silver '58 Corvette as a
guest of Frank Lovejoy. He was dating Frank Lovejoy's daughter. The
daughter drove a '55 T-Bird and Frank drove a '48 MG TC with a
supercharger.
Does anyone remember while Dean was in the Army, Jan sang with someone
named
Arnie? What songs did Jan and Arnie Sing?
As a note to James Doten regarding wagon shock mounts. There has been a
shock mount on my 1956 Nomad since about 1985. Nothing was cut to install
it, just a couple of holes in the frame. The shock mount was made and
installed by John Johnstad of the Santa Clarita Nomads.

No problem! Any lamp rated at 120 volts will work assuming that we're
using alternating current. Since the current is alternating, there
isn't any current flow 60 times a second at 60 hertz and the 120 volts
is really a RMS (root mean square) value and the peak to peak voltage is
higher than 120. 147 volts if I remember correctly.

by passenger side head are V12I6XXB. I think its either a 275 or 300hp
327 but I am not sure what it actually was. I am just really curious. Its
for sure a 300hp motor now with the current setup.stock cam heads and
pistons but has headers Torker intake and 600cfm Holly. It was a crate

I forwarded this from my AMC list, it's dated Oct. 2nd, so I don't know if
anyone is close by this area just north of Atlanta, but someone in the area

should check it out....
Jerry

.... I wanted people to know about a situation in the Atlanta
area that might be beneficial to them. Atlanta is experiencing significant
urban sprawl and open areas of land are being gobbled up like you wouldn't
believe. This is now extending way out into surrounding counties.

A friend of mine graciously shared the location of an abandoned junkyard
full of all kinds of old cars. Many old Buicks and Oldsmobiles and other
American cars from the 40's, '50s and '60s. Most are very rusted hulks but
a number of them still have intact glass and trim that is in pretty good
shape (as of two weeks ago). Probably even more are way back under the
Kudzu vines. Anyway, my friend just found out that they are clearing this
land for redevelopment and thus sending all of the cars to the mobile
crusher starting later this week.

I don't own this land and don't know who does so I can't tell you for sure
if people care that you take things. Apparently it has just been sold to
developers. My guess is that you could pretty much take anything you want
since it will be going into the crusher within the next week or so. I
seems
a shame to waste all of those potential restoration parts.

Unfortunately, I can't tell you exactly how many cars and trucks are still
there or if they will be there by the time any of you make it up there.
You
will just have to take your chances and remember that "you are on your
own."

To get to this site, take I-85 north out of Atlanta to the Buford Georgia
area. Go one exit past the huge mall of Georgia to the Hamilton Mill exit.
Head west from there and stay on Hamilton Mill Road no matter what for
about
6 miles. You will come to the intersection of the Buford-Gainesville
highway. Hamilton Mill Road ends here and changes its name so that should
give you the clue that you are in the right location. The high school will
be across the road and on your left. At this same intersection, turn right
onto Buford Gainesville Highway and go about 100 yards or so. The yard
will
be on your right. It doesn't look like much from the road but there are
(or
were) some real jewels hidden way back in the woods. It takes about 40
minutes without traffic to reach this area from the 85 and 285 intersection
in NE Atlanta.

Good luck!

Bob,
Re: electricity question
Not sure of the 140 volts but I think the part of having no power 60 times
per second refers to 60 cycle ac electricity. Alternating current pulsates
sixty times per second. Its been a long time since I worked with
electricity so I could be wrong.

Editor's note. You got it correct.

Great List Bob! Something I read on the list sparked my curiosity. Someone
said "have your car appraised by licensed appraiser" I want someone to
clearly tell me just how a special interest car appraiser gets licensed. I
know that in California a car salesperson has to be licensed and can
appraise used cars. I would never take my 57 to a used car salesperson to
have it appraised so what say all of you on the list?

In response to your question: In Massachusetts ,you need to take a course
that is licensed
by the state (and a cost of around $500).

The course describes how to read the estimating guides for regular
collision estimates for the majority of people. You MUST have an automotive
background to even comprehend what they are talking about.

Once you finish the class, there is a test and in MA only about 50% pass
the 1st time because it is so hard.

After you pass the test (which is another $50)you will be able to be
licensed for one year and you must renew every year.

For someone who does custom or classic appraisals(like myself) you really
need someone who was into the hobby or business for at least 15 years- and
keeps up on the latest trends etc ,so as to have a good idea on what
modifications cost to do - in both time and money.
I hope that helps you-

I would suggest again, that if you are interested in having your car
appraised to go to a local show and ASK people there who have cars of your
quality WHO appraised them..Word of mouth is the best.
The average cost around here for an appraisal of a custom or classic is
about $150.00 and money well spent.

Someday Id be glad to tell you a story about WHY ... LOL

feel free to contact me with any questions.....
Good luck

With respect to your question: you indicate that "Diane stated she also
wanted
the bulb to give off light when there would be no voltage to it 60 times
every
second". This actually is not a problem at all! Normal household power
supplies
in the US are 110-120 volts AC / 60 cycles per second. Thus, the voltage is
actually a sine wave and goes through zero sixty times per second. The bulb
filament never really cools enough for the diminished light output to be
noticeable, though. The max value of the sine wave up at 140 volts is not a
problem for the everyday 110-120 volt (nominal rating) bulbs that we buy
all
the time.

By the way, there used to be (over 50 years ago) a few areas that used 110
volt
25 cycle current years ago in the lower Manhattan area of New York City. In
these areas, you could actually see the "flicker" with a typical
incandescent
light bulb.

Bob,
Diane can use any standard "110-120V" bulb. These values are RMS (root
mean
square) and the 140V measure is probably a peak value. Since AC current is

alternating current, it follows a sine wave pattern. One complete cycle
starts at zero volts, goes positive and peaks, drops back down through zero

and goes negative through a peak and back to zero. Hence there are
actually
120 "zeros" every second.

california was always loaded with them. there was recently a show on the
