To Paul with the Buick Grill

No it is not a simple bolt in. You need to do some trimming on the grill
to get it to fit right. Somebody else on this list did it and we have
friend who swapped it in to. Also I think a support by the center of the
hood needs to be trimmed. Let me know if you'd like some pictures of the
car.

WHEN A '57 CHEVY WAS EVERYONE'S DREAM CAR... TO CRUISE, PEEL OUT. LAY
RUBBER

AND NO ONE EVER ASKED WHERE THE CAR KEYS WERE 'CAUSE THEY WERE ALWAYS IN
THE
CAR, IN THE IGNITION, AND THE DOORS WERE NEVER LOCKED. AND YOU GOT IN BIG

REMEMBER LYING ON YOUR BACK ON THE GRASS WITH YOUR FRIENDS AND SAYINS

AND..... WITH ALL OUR PROGRESS... DON'T YOU JUST WISH.. JUST ONCE.. YOU

SO SEND THIS ON TO SOMEONE WHO CAN STILL REMEMBER NANCY DREW, THE HARDY

WHEN BEING SENT TO THE PRINCIPAL'S OFFICE WAS NOTHING COMPARED TO THE FATE

OUR
LIVES, BUT IT WASN'T BECAUSE OF DRIVE BY SHOOTINGS, DRUGS, GANGS, ETC.

OUR PARENTS AND GRANDPARENTS WERE A MUCH BIGGER THREAT! BUT WE ALL SURVIVED

BECAUSE THEIR LOVE WAS GREATER THAN THE THREAT.

DIDN'T THAT FEEL GOOD, JUST TO GO BACK AND SAY, YEAH , I REMEMBER THAT !!

Betty,

You state that you're still looking for "the back seat back rest for a '57
convertible". You then ask "will a 2 door hardtop work"?

I presume that you are referring to the rear seat back for a '57
convertible as
opposed to the rear seat cushion (which is the part that you sit on). The
seat
back from a 2 door hardtop is definitely NOT the same. The convertible rear
seat
is considerably narrower than that on the 2 door hardtop due to the room
required for packaging of the top folding mechanism. A rear seat back from
a '55
or '56 model Chevy convertible would also fit, as would one from a '55,
'56, or
'57 Pontiac - if you could find one of those!

Unfortunately, none are exactly common. If you can't find exactly what you
need
though, I do have a suggestion: find someone with a '57 convertible like
yours
and use their seat back for a pattern. A good trim shop should be able to
make
up a seat back frame assembly using components (seat back frame, springs,
retainers) scrounged from other cars and then upholster it. The key is to
know
the dimensions and exact configuration of the original which you are trying
to
duplicate.

You also state that you need the "rear quarter glass guides". I THINK I
know
what you are referring to, but am not absolutely sure. I don't have any
myself
regardless, but - for those folk who might be able to supply you - it would
probably help if you could use part #s or describe the parts a bit more
fully.
Hope some of the above is of some assistance.

Regarding the hood springs - we bought brand new ones from Danchuk's and
they have worked perfectly. I can place the hood in any position we want
and
it will stay there. It moves easily with one finger. However, don't buy the
chrome or stainless springs. Ours are the black anodized. Hood stays in
position through vulcrum points and spring pressure, not through friction
or
lack thereof. For $17.70 plus shipping, your problem will be solved. Carl

I believe the convertible '57 Chevy seat back rest is narrower than the
hardtop to allow room for the convertible mechanism. If you can't find

Bob,

As always, good to see your list on a regular basis.

Are we all forgetting Eric Clapton's song " Rock and Roll Heart" in which
he
exclaims: "I get off on '57 Chevies?"

It is ironic that someone would chime in with info about members of the
Grateful Dead growing up around '56 and '57 Chevies -- last week I picked
up
an old Grateful Dead tape at a used book store and shoved it into my
cassette
player. Since then I have thought about getting one of the little Deadhead

stickers for the lower corner of the passenger side of the windshield. I
have an old Thrush Woodie Woodpecker on the other side!

On a more serious matter, earlier in the week I installed a NOS headlamp
switch and a NOS Saginaw horn bearing-bushing for the top portion of my
steering column. The light switch went in like a snap -- the bearing
assembly was a little more difficult with all those damned turn signal
wires
in the way in the steering column mast jacket. While I had it apart I
found
out that one of the little metal ears that holds the turn signal housing
assembly in place had broken off. My buddy welded this in place for me
once
but I have found that must be only a temporary solution. Are these mast
jackets available separately? I know they must be a pain in the wazoo to
install. Guess I will have to be careful with the turn signals for a while

until I can find a replacement -- it rotates a little if you are not
careful.

I guess I have always known original parts are far superior to these repops

we have to abide from Danchuck and other sources. The NOS Delco Remy
headlamp switch operates with a decided, chunk, chunk when you pull it out.

And it appears the rheostat uses a different gauge wire so as to dim the
instrument lights to a lower luminescence than the aftermarket variety. I

touched up the paint on the outside clear plastic bezel -- it looks like
new.

The horn-bearing bushing, as seasoned fellows will note, is of a
completely
different design than the modern repops. Why in heaven's name don't they
again make this part out of brass instead of that cheap white metal and
plastic? I guess I have had about five or six of the new variety installed

in my steering column since getting my car in 1993. They are absolutely
junk! This one came in the original Saginaw envelope -- we will see how
long
this old codger will last -- the wire was a little stiff but it works just
fine. I was somewhat concerned that the smaller contact ring would not
work
with the new plunger but it is A-OK.

I am still looking for a pair of off-set inner, upper control arm rods for
my
front suspension. I contacted Rare Parts in California and they wanted to
know if I was a retail or wholesale customer? What difference does it
make?
Why do these jokers charge one set of prices to retail customers and
another
to mechanics? I have a good friend who runs a salvage yard here who would
order them for me for the discount but my question again is, why the
hassle?

The variety they have apparently gives you an additional 1 degree negative
camber instead of 1/2 degree as the MOOG parts do. Any experts on this
matter -- please contact me.

There apparently is also some controversy about these poly-graphite
bushings
available from Performance Suspension Technology of Montville, NJ. I am
serious about rebuilding my front end -- but this is a big, expensive job
and
I want to know if these things are worth the additional money one has to
shell out to pay for them vs. the old original performance type. I really
would like to get this from an expert who knows what they are talking
about.

One of my mechanic friends says it is getting harder and harder to find
good
front end mechanics around here. Is that the case in other parts of the
country?

Finally, it was good to read in this morning's paper that some guys here
are
trying to start an old Corvair club. It would be good to see a bunch of
these things going down the road together amidst the autumn foliage!

Hi Bob, this is for Jerry in Rome, GA. He wanted to know the engine ID for
the old 283, 'GF' code. First of all, he must get the date casting off the
rear of the block. 'GF' means different things for different years. For
instance, in 1955 it was a 265 cu in, 3 speed with AC, and in 1957 it was a
283, "terrible"-glide with fuel injection. The casting number will not
help since both 265 and 283's are '548' blocks.

Bob, keep up the good work and as always remember that 'GOD is Love and
