Hi Bob--

Question for the group. I have a '55 BA2DHT that needs a complete paint
job. The car has some rust on the firewall and on the floor. Other than
that, the car is complete with no major body damage. I wish to have it
painted the original Gypsy Red and Shoreline Beige color scheme.

I have stripped the car entirely of all its trim--no windshields, no
interior, no gages, no bumpers, lights, etc. My reasoning is that the
stripdown will save $. Also, I plan to re-assemble myself after paint.
All
I require is the paint job.

Question: What is a fair price to pay for a complete paint job inside and
out, under trunk, firewall, under hood, etc. The car is mechanically
sound.
It has new front and rear suspensions. No mechanical work needed--only
paint.

Can some members email me as to their thoughts? Paint is 2, 3, 4 thousand?

Eight? Ten thousand?

Thanks,
JB

Hi Bob, I read the following letter and was reminded of a problem a friend
of mine had with Southern Rods & Parts a couple of years ago. He ordered a
set of polished American mags from them at their booth during a major NE
street rod event in the spring. Towards the end of summer (!) he finally
got
the wheels. He immediately checked the order and discovered that they had
sent him two pairs with a GM bolt pattern instead of a pair of GM and a
pair
with a Ford pattern, like he had ordered. He called them to set things
straight. They checked their copy of the invoice and started giving him
grief because he had waited 4 months to notify them! He finally got them to
understand that they were the cause of the 4 month delay and they agreed to
exchange the wheels. They sent him a pair of wheels with the right pattern
all right. One that used straight shank lug nuts and one that used tapered
seat nuts. He's cured of dealing with them.

Bob, maybe this isn't the place for venting, but I wanted your readers to
know how rude the guys at Southern Rods & Parts are. Starting with an
e-mail
to the company about their shorty 55/57 headers, would they fit on a 62
Nova,
as I have decided to put the crate motor I have in it instead of my 55.
Their comment was, " I don't have to guess, they won't work, but we sell
the
ones you need". I called them the next day and the guy who answered, who
was
supposed to be the manager said, " we don't make them for that car", so I
had
told him that someone e-mailed me saying that they did. I heard him ask
around the shop and finally he decided they did have them. Well, the ones
they sent me for my 55 have 2 1/2 collectors and the exhaust flange they
sent
only had a 2" pipe, so I asked if they had 2 1/2 exhaust flanges instead of

the 2". The guy responds, "well that's just the way they come". He was real

short with me and didn't give a dang whether he sold me anything or not.
There isn't anyway that I really talked to a manager, so I thought he may
read your board, if so reevaluate your staff, you have a great idea for
business. Thanks, Rod......

Hi everyone-
Does anyone know of a place to buy an Engine Cradle that will fit a
'55-'56-'57 Chevy V8? You know, the low type with caster wheels that bolts
to the front & rear of the engine, where the engine does not rotate. I need
one for an original rebuilt engine I want to purchase soon. Please let me
know if you have any sources. Perhaps some enthusiast has designed one and
would sell me one. I could fabricate it if I had the critical dimensions
and/or a drawing.

All the ones available to buy are for the later side-mount engines (they
say '58 and up). I'm afraid they won't work. Or am I wrong? Can they be
easily modified? Any ideas would be appreciated. Sounds like a good product
for some entrepreneur to design, fab and sell to the classic Chevy market.
Hmmmm...

Thanks! -Jerry Mull, President L.A. Classic Chevy Club

Bob, great list (3 years' huh?) you're one smart dude!
Regarding the starting and running problem, the solenoid may be the
culprit. If I understand what you said. If you've replaced the solenoid,
then perhaps you switched the two small wires on either side of the center
post of the solenoid.

I'd swear some vendor on this list offered a special

Does anyone recall this?

To Les Young, on your starting problem, check the wires at the starter,
make sure that the small inside wire on the solonoid is not touching the
large wire on the battery post, also trace the wiring from the ignition
switch to the starter (its not hard to do) sounds like you may have some
wires shorted together.
Good luck
Wade

Bob I was wondering if any of the readers on the east coast remembers a
disc jockey from Chicago in the early 60s by the name, Dick Viande (check
for incorrect spelling). I remember listening to him in SC when I was a kid
and was wondering if he is still alive.

Hi Bob and every one, I need a little help from someone and this is the
place. Several months ago, I needed some help on building a 605 box and
some on from this good list helped me out by emailing me complete
instructions, step by step. That project is done and installed in the car.
I thought I had a complete instruction paper on how to modify the stock
steering column, but it is not in my info file. The walk through, with
pictures, I believe come from a party with this on the bottom of the
sheets, ( http://www.integrityonline30.com/belair55350/iolpage7.htm) The
last remark on the page says, Thanks to Glenn L. for his help on this page.
Does any one remember sending this? It also said that there would be
complete instructions on how to modify the stock column coming out soon. I
would really appreciate some info from someone so I dont have to call a
tech line at CCI. Thanks every one. Bob, was that last article on the list
about your college time and your service time, was it from a close buddy of
yours????? Roger in Iowa

Editor's note. Joe Best was a man I knew when I went to college in the
late 50's early 60's. I had not heard form him since I got out of
college. He bought a 55 Chevy and joined the list about a year ago. He
didn't know if I was the same Bob Ford he went to college with and I didn't
know if he was the same Joe Best I knew in college. Small world isn't it?

Hi Bob,

I haven't had anything to contribute for while, but sort of an
answer to a couple of things
on the recent list.

1. The fellow with the starting problem for his 57 Nomad. I had a
similar problem after rebuilding and installing my 327. The problem got
progressively worse
with each time I would start the car. I don't know what kind of system you
have. Mine
was an Accel electronic breakerless. I removed the ignition module, and
installed an
MSD system. This after checking the coil etc. and still had the same
problem. I then
removed the Accel Distr. and installed a points distr. which cured the
problem. I must send the
Accel distr. back to them to have it checked out. I believe that when I
had a 2-1/2" exhaust system installed,
that the fellow doing the work did not disconnect the dist. before welding
the pipes. This
I think fried the magnetic pick up & ignition module. I have had to have
the car towed
home, only to have it start the next day. Shut it off, and could not get
it restarted. If that
kind of system is not your problem, try checking your timing advance.
Your distr. may be moving and changing the advance setting.

2. The question from 55 2 dr sedan about the beach boys. I don't know
that he actually played in their band, but Darell Dragon of "The Captain &
Teniell (sp?)
fame did a lot of the background stuff for their recordings. Am I close?

Greetings, Bob, "Raeber57," "OldCars57" (David),

Well, our foray into music Classics has apparently not fallen on deaf ears.

I've had a number of nice e-mails in the past few days from "Chevy List"
readers who are enjoying these trips down memory lane.

As to "Raeber57's" question, who was the band member of the Beach Boys who
went on to solo fame, including a weekly highly rated TV show, the answer
is
Glen Travis Campbell, who we used to call "Clem," because of his southern
roots.

Glen was a highly respected session player in the LA music scene in the
early
60s, following his departure from that famous 'one hit wonder,' group, 'The

Champs.' Remember "Tequila?" Glen is an exceptional singer, songwriter,
guitarist. He also has a music publishing and artist management company in
Nashville, but, at last account, was living in Phoenix, AZ.

As to Dave's "Webb Pierce" question, the long overdue country 'super star'
was finally inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame this past October
4.
Unfortunately, he was not alive to receive the honor. Webb passed away in
1991, leaving a tremendous musical legacy. Known as one of the great 'honky

tonk' singers of the 50s, 60s, Webb truly loved the 'glitter and glamour'
of
show business. His fabulous Nudie custom suites, custom cars, and the
guitar
shaped pool at his residence on Curtiswood Drive in South Nashville, were
all
trademarks of a career that spanned five decades.

Webb got his start on the "Louisiana Hayride" in Shreveport, which also
gave
a boost to the careers of Elvis Presley, Kitty Wells, Patsy Montana, Jim
Reeves, Johnny Horton, Red Sovine, Claude King, Brenda Lee, and the
legendary
Hank Williams, Sr., who was a member in '48, '49, and '52 (after being
'fired' from the Grand Ole Opry.)

With classic country songs like "There Stands The Glass," "Wondering,"
"Slowly," "More and More," the controversial "Back Street Affair," and "I
Ain't Never," Webb placed nearly a hundred singles on the national charts
during his long career. His cover of the legendary Jimmie Rodgers classic,
"I'm In The Jailhouse Now," stayed on the charts a remarkable 37 weeks.

Webb influenced not only scores of country singers, ranging from George
Jones, Willie Nelson and Alan Jackson, but also rock icons Eric Clapton and

Mark Knopfler.

Regards,

Fred Vail
Nashville, TN

PS Incidentally, this year's record twelve inductees into the Country Music

Hall of Fame included The Everly Brothers, Don Gibson, Bill Anderson, The
Jordanairres, and legendary Sun Records founder/producer, Sam Phillips.
