Bob, I understand that you send a list of various cars that are for sale. I
would like to receive the list if at all possible. I learned about your
list from a posting on ChevyTalk.com. By the way, I am looking for an
original 56 Chevy. Thanks and have a happy Thanksgiving.

In response to Juan Bezanilla, our '56 210, 2 Door Sedan is in for body
repair and paint. I have a few cancer (rust) spots that will need to be
replaced. My quote was in the $6K range. The guy that's doing our car has
a pretty good reputation.

In response to Anthony and Rod in regards to Southern Rod's. I bought a
set
of their 'guaranteed to fit' ceramic coated headers. Well, they didn't!
The pitman arm hits and the idler arm hits. I called them and they said,
"It's a hot rod! Make it fit, dimple the headers!" Some response! Well, I
decided to keep them and I did grind down the pitman arm and dimpled the
header at the idler arm side but, I wasn't happy about their response.
Would I buy something else from them?...

Anyone out there know where I can get decent hood for our '56 Chevy? One
last question, we will be in the Los Angeles area during the Thanksgiving
week, anything regarding classic cars happening down there? Thanks, and
have a Happy Thanksgiving!

MUNCIE BORG WARNER T-10 and SUPER T-10 four speed transmissions. I have
been repairing/rebuilding manual transmissions since 1957, full time since
1982. The four speed manual transmission still is a good choice for the
tri-five cars. There are some things to consider when deciding on using one
of these transmissions. First, the Muncie transmissions are 30 years old
now and the large majority of them are going to need work. This translates
into parts, time and cash. Unless you are willing to spend countless hours
on the phone looking for expensive NOS General Motors Delco parts, you will
have to settle for gears and other hard parts made in Italy or Spain. Or,
you will purchase a rebuilt transmission that has a combination of G. M.
gears and gears made in Europe. Now these parts look cosmetically great
and they seem to work fine. I simply would not trust off shore parts in my
transmission behind a big block at your local drag strip. Yes they can be
used with good results as a driver car. There is an exception to this hard
parts senerio. The weakest part of the Muncie was the case. The Aluminum
case would stretch and then the gears let go. Now, after all these years a
new heavy duty MUncie case is on the market. It seems pricey at about
$260.00, but when you consider having to tool up to make this (I think it
took guts to produce a new case when over all sales of Muncie parts are
down) the price is not that important if you have to have it. The case is
truly heavy duty, with reinforced ears, a thicker front that takes a
thicker full size front bearing, reinforced idler gear boss and a overall
thicker case. This case will fill a need for those folks whose case cannot
be repaired as well as for high performance use.In most scenarios, the case
can be repaired by a competent fellow in New York by the name of Steve
Bechtold, a Muncie, Borg Warner specialist who rebushes the 2 holes, welds
on ears, and can do just about any transmission case repair necessary.
The time it takes to repair/rebuild a Muncie transmission is up
substantially over the past ten years. The reason is clear. The days of
opening a Muncie and putting in 4 brass blocking rings, two bearings and a
gasket kit are gone. They all require substantial work now after many years
of abuse. And thats the problem in trying to evaluate one. How do you tell
if the case is good when the transmission is altogether. You are better off
to assume that it is not good and that it will need repaired or replaced.
The same goes for the inside of the cluster gear, you can't see it. Also,
we are now seeing a lot of bad mainshafts and they have to be replaced, or
in some cases repaired. You must be careful here and know what you are
getting into. For years, I had a company repair my main shafts and do a
great job. All of a sudden, I started getting shafts back where the bearing
surface was not hardened. After checking, I found out that a new guy was
performing the job at this company and he did not know what he was doing.
So, now when you rebuild a Muncie Transmission, there is much more to do
besides install new parts. There is case work, possible sahft work and
chasing down odds and ends like the correct speed O gears. This all takes
time.
Now for over-all cost relating to a four speed. Many factors drive the
cost of rebuilding manual transmissions. The fact that G. M. does not make
parts any longer drives up the prices of remaining NOS parts like gears
cases etc. This is the effects of a parts shortage. Then you have
aftermarket companies such as Richmond Gear, Jerico, Liberty, Burt and
others with new improved four, five and six speed transmissions. These
units push the pricing envelope for the guy with the show car/driver or
street car that is on a tight budget. A new six speed from Jerrico will
cost you $6600.00. Can you imagine 20 years ago someone telling you that
one day the manual transmission in your car will soon cost you more than
your motor cost. Unfortunately, I do not see any relief in pricing for the
standard transmission in the imediate future. The aftermarket Transmission
companies seem to have both the current and future market firmly in their
grasp except for the small hobby shop transmission expert. There is a
network of transmission hobby shops such as myself operating on the
internet, but like everything else, you need to check them out before
laying out your hard earned cash. Even though I am a hobby shop, I have
been around longer than most of these folks. I have even been instrumental
in assisting some of the larger Transmission rebuilding companies by
selling them copius amounts of NOS gears when they were more plentiful.
There are few real transmission deals out there today. Its more a case of
if you can get what you need at a price that does not break your bank then
grab it. My best advise is to try to find someone who will work with you by
not only selling you a product but that will spend the time with you to
make sure that you are on the right track with
your plans to use a combination of drive-train parts that will work the way
you expect them to work. For example, you can't use 6th gear and idle down
on the expressway if your car is cammed up. So, talk to your supplier and
find out if he will assist you with your project. A worthwhile company will
offer some tech help. More later.

Great list. I also edit a list on dogs so I know how much work it is to
put a list out. You have 2
things going for your list that makes it so great. We all learn a lot from
it and it is fun. I bought
my 57 from an ad in your list. It had just the options on it I wanted.
What a stroke of luck.

Here is a question I have had for a long time and no one around here seems
to know the answer.
The Diesel fuel we can buy for our cars and trucks is Diesel #2. What is
Diesel #1?

I love the discussion of 50s music. It brings back wonderful memories.
Here is a question that if
you know the answer, I salute you. This is very obscure information.

What formerly religious quartet had a smash pop hit song that was a story
of a man taking his
girlfriend to the "Hungry House Cafe". This song became their signature
song and the public
demands they sing it at every performance. Also what was the name of the
song.

Sharon

Editor's note. Let me think. Were the singers Duane Allen, Richard
Sterban, Joe Bonsall, and
William Lee Golden? Was the girl they were singing about and the name of
the song "Cassandra
Peterson"? List members did I come close?

Hi Juan Bezanilla:

A paint job can vary according to what you are looking for. As a custom
painter for almost 20 yrs , I can charge as little as $2000 to $20,000,
depending on the quality and depth.,
I would suggest speaking ONLY with restoration shiops for your classic.
Most collision shops would probably give you a lesser quality unless they
happen to have a seasoned painter there who knows much about classic paint
jobs.

It also depends on where you live- its usually cheaper in the South than
here in Boston MA.

Decide if you would like Cruise night quality or show quality and start
from there- good luck

Editor's note. I agree completely with Lenny. Most body shops in my area,
Southern California, will not work on a classic car even if you paid them
their labor rate. I asked a couple of them why not. They told me their
people are trained to do insurance work. This means do the work fast and
cheap. They said classic car owners are looking for a quality job and they
just don't have anyone that knows how to do that anymore.
For fun, I asked one body shop if they could fill in dents with lead. He
told me that it was against the law to use lead on cars.

So check with a restoration shop. However one restoration shop told me
that you might save some money by having a regular body shop do the body
work getting the car ready to paint and then let the restoration shop do
the painting. Anyone know if this could be true?

Does anyone have or know of anywhere we can find a dash mounted rearview
mirror for a '57 Sports Sedan?
I have seen pictures of them in repair manuals. Was this a factory option
or an after market item?
Thanks,
Doyle Gardner

Dear Doyle,

Chevy stopped using the dash mounted rear view mirrors after they
started vibrating too much, basically Chevy replaced them with the
normal rear view mirror. If you need to replace the top mount mirror
support, you need to use a station wagon one which is a little longer
than the typical passenger car one.

Hello everyone,
First, I would like to thank Bob for the wonderful job he does on this
list.
THANK YOU.
Next, I have a serious problem with an original 57 motor that maybe
someone could help me with. This motor was rebuilt (professionally) and
installed in the car. After the motor ran and got warm, I noticed a loud
chirping noise coming from INSIDE the motor. I took the whole front of the

motor apart, including the timing cover, fuel pump, water pump, generator,
harmonic balancer, and radiator. I dumped gas in the carb and started the
motor with everything off. The noise was still there.
I took this motor to another professional and he rebuilt the bottom end
again. He did find a burr on a connecting rod and we thought that was the
problem. After I installed it in the car a second time, the motor STILL
makes this noise. Also, I installed a new cam the second time around and
new
timing gears with a new chain. The cam bearings were changed twice.
This does not sound like a lifter noise at all, and we know it is not a

distributor noise. The noise is coming from lower than the heads of the
motor. It sounds like a loose fan belt but that is not the problem. Also,

it sounds like an echo with the oil cap off. If you look at the back of
the
timing gear, u can barely see a spot where it might be rubbing on the
block.
Both of these guys told me that is normal because your cam moves back and
forth. Neither of these 2 engine builders have ever heard a motor make
this
kind of noise. They do not think it is an internal lubrication problem.
Lastly, we checked the cam and we do have the correct cam for this original

motor. The early motors took a different cam, but that is not the problem.

They have many many years of experience with Chevrolet motors and are
totally
lost with this one. Both guys have been very helpful. Has anyone
experienced anything like this? If so, would u please post or e-mail me at

Bob, WHAT HAPPENED to Jimmie Rodgers' voice? Haven't heard
anything
about it.?????
The Jimmie Rodgers that Bob was referring to is the "Honeycomb"
Jimmie
Rodgers (Folk Singer, popular in the late 50's) The Singing Brakeman was
the
yodeling Jimmie Rodgers popular in the late 20's, & early 30's.!!!!!!!!! He

recorded his last 12 songs while sick in bed with TB. He passed away in
1933
shortly after these 12 recordings! Many of his songs were about railroad
bumming, which was very popular at that time, as Tri-five Chevys were yet
