I was wandering thru Ames Dept. store today, and of course visited the
toy department. While looking over the usual suspects, I glanced down at
floor level, and noticed some new 1/43rd scale '50's and '60's cars. Decent

stuff, made by New-Ray and called the CityCruiser Collection, and only
$1.99
( on sale at 1.59 ), they had cars like a Chrysler 300-C, a 300-E, a
Chrysler
'64 Turbine car ( yellow ), Ford '66 T-bird, and lots of '50's GM stuff
like
'57 Pontiac Bonnieville convertible, '55 Pontiac conv., '56 Buick conv.,
'66
Olds Cutless 442, '65 GTO, and some others I forget. Had a lot of different

models that aren't usually made! Had a '64 Mustang and '49 Mercury, too.
I've never run into a '57 Pontiac before, so I had to have it, a friend of
mine had a 4-dr HT once, nice car! Just don't see them. I didn't see any
AMC/Rambler cars ( yet ), I may go out to see if they are on the web, and
list the models of cars offered. Anyway, if you need any cars for your
model
train layout for Xmas, these would look nice, and aren't expensive, either.

Not a single '55-56-57 Chevy, but as those are rather abundant, I'm glad to

see these other models come out. Nice to have different ones. Good hunting!
I
haven't seen these anywhere but at Ames right now, first time I've run
across
them.

Thanks for your great list Bob.
Last year I finished restoring a 1957 Chevy Pick-up, the details are at
this web site.
http://members.bellatlantic.net/~gharris5/truck_files/chevy.htm It was
originally an ARMY truck, and was never altered from its original
equipment. Bottom line is I have to sell it. There are still some detail
things to be done, so someone who just wants to dabble can get all the
enjoyment and none of the heartache that goes with these projects. Email me
directly if you are serious, it really is in "perfect shape". I would like
to get what I have in it, (about $14,000) but I'm a reasonable man. My
phone number is 410 215 9967 and I am always there, just outside Baltimore

RE: PVC Air Lines, Don Janda

I have to run air line thru the shop. I was told I could use PVC. Does
anyone have any details or has done it? PLMK
Thanks - Don

Don,

Running air lines in CPVC is simple and easy. The first thing of note is
that you must use CPVC, which has a higher pressure rating, and is normally
used for water line supply. I believe CPVC is rated somewhere around 100
psi. CPVC glue is also different than PVC glue, so make sure you get the
correct product. I don't believe there is a difference in the cleaner.

I used this technique to run about 250 feet of lines in my garage about 4
years ago. I have never had a leak or a rupture yet, and I have had the
lines charged to about 125 psi.

You can get all the supplies at your local home supply store. You will
make
the transistion from CPVC to your air fitting with either a male or female
CPVC threaded adapter. This will connect you to a standard iron adapter
that your quick release air fitting will screw into. Use teflon tape to
provide the seal between the plastic and the iron, and also between the
iron
and the air fitting. I don't believe you will be able to connect the air
fitting directly to the CPVC adapter because of the thread difference. If
you take your air fitting to the home supply store, you will easily be able
to find the pieces I am describing.

I recommend using 3/4 inch piping, although I used 1/2 inch and it appears
to work just fine. I haven't used an air tool yet that I couldn't get
enough air to with the 1/2 inch pipe.
Here are some more recommendations that you might consider for this
project.

1. Make sure you use a good quality glue and cleaner when assembling.
Clean
every piece to be glued thoroughly.

2. Put a shutoff valve at the point where your compressor connects to the
plastic and turn it off while not in use. Otherwise, if you have a rupture
in the plastic while you are not around, your compressor will run until you
return or it fails.

3. CPVC is plastic, thus it will break. In the areas where you will be
connecting/disconnecting air fittings, secure your lines tightly. If you
stub them out at 90 degrees from the wall, minimize the protruding length
to
reduce the chance of snapping the lines at the ninety angle when you are
connecting/disconnecting stubborn air fittings.

Good Luck,

However one restoration shop told me
that you might save some money by having a regular body shop do the body
work getting the car ready to paint and then let the restoration shop do
the painting. Anyone know if this could be true?
BOB

Hi Bob;

I would say YES and No. Personally when I have had this happen it is
already someone who wants a break on price and thats what they end up
getting in quality too. Most body shops unaccustomed to custom restoration
work will 'mud' the heck out of dents etc - too much bondo to even deal
with. In fact the last T bucket I did was such an old body that it was not
much more than bondo and wood and the owner still insisted I could get a
show quality paint job from it- (funny)

Many of our smaller body shops know of people who do restoration on the
side- Id suggest ASKING a local show and go from there/

Sharon,
You were asking about diesel fuel. I believe diesel #1
is also known as "red" diesel, at least I have only
heard of two kinds. Anyway, it is for use in off-road
vehicles such as tractors, farm equipment, and such.
DO NOT use it in your car/truck if you drive it on the
road. I know it is considerably cheaper than the
diesel I use but we have an old above ground tank at
one of our fire stations and they make a very big deal
about not using it except for tractors and such. Maybe
it has something to do with emissions and such. That
is for someone else to answer.
Hope this helps.

Hi Bob,
Great column!!! Two things caught my Eye, first to Richard in Spokane
about
the groove in the rear camshaft journal for his 265. YES...you need the
groove for oiling. Take a die grinder and cut a small groove in the center

of the journal exactly like the groove on the camshaft you removed. I have

done this many times and it works.

Second, concerning Jimmie Rogers (correct spelling) who sang "Honeycomb".
Years ago, he was stopped by the L.A. PD and apparently was uncooperative
with the officers. They beat him senseless with their batons. His brain
functions were effected. He sued the LAPD. The officers testified he fell

out of his car when he tried to get out of the car. A pathologist
testified
he would have had to fall ten feet directly on his head to suffer the
injuries he suffered. He won the court case, but to my knowledge he never
performed again. The LAPD did the same thing to J.N. Roberts, a factory
Husqvarna motorcycle cross country racer, he never rode competition again.

It pays to be cooperative with the law!! Have a happy Thanksgiving!!!! I

My dad told me to send this e-mail to you. He said someone on you list
would know the answer.
I am a high school senior. One of the questions I have to research to find
an answer is:

What car maker owned the most powerful radio station the US ever had?

Thanks
Rita

Editor's note. Here is a hint that should help. The car maker made the
smallest production cars ever sold in the US. These cars were made in the
late 40s and early 50s. The car maker also made radios and refrigerators
with shelves in the doors. The radio station was in a town that has the
Reds as it's baseball team. The radio stations power was 500,000 watts.
I don't think radio stations can be that powerfull now.
Anyone know for sure?

Don,

Yes, you can use PVC for an air line from a compressor, but it is not
recommended. If you do use PVC, only use the thick walled variety and
pay attention to the pressure. Using threaded steel pipe is
recommended. If you are making a long runs across a large room/shop use
at least 1" diameter, or larger. The air and pipes will get hot, and
steel helps cool the air and can withstand any pressure you are likely
to put in it. The hotter the air, the more water will be contained
within the air. Thus your air drier will be working harder, and I doubt
it would be capable of drying the air as well as if it was cooler coming
through steel. I think the PVC is rated for something like 120 psi, but
is intended for water which is usually below 50 psi. While I may not
remember the pressure correctly, for most air uses, you are likely to be
using it toward the maximum pressure, and some would say your asking for
trouble. I installed several PVC systems in bicycle shops when I was
younger, and didn't know any better. The primary use of these was to
inflate tires, and run blow guns for cleaning parts. Therefore, there
was no problem causing wear on the air tools, or adding water into paint
where it would be a major issue. After about three years, one of these
systems did fail, at a joint it I recall correctly. The others systems
lasted at least that long without any problems. I can't say I wouldn't
do it again because these systems did work well for their intended use,
and if the pipes are out of the way so any unexpected burst wasn't
likely to cause damage or injury, I might consider doing it again,
because it is so much cheaper. However, steel pipe is what I would
recommend for a system you want to last, be durable and safe.

This for list members in California. We now have a new law that allows
husband and wife to own property as
"Community Property with the Right of Survivorship". This type of holding
assets lets a couple avoid all probate costs and also get a stepped up
