This is for the real old timers. The recent mention of Crosleys brings to
    mind this question. What
was unique about the gas gauge on a Crosley?

    ROY

Editor's note. Being and old timer, I should know the answer to that
question. I think what was unique about the gas gauge on a Crosley was it
didn't have one. As I recall, there was a piece of metal on the gas cap
that had markings on it for the number of gallons in the tank. Anyone know
    for sure?

I am installing 210 trim on a 150 two door sedan. Does anyone know the
    exact
location of the quarter trim? I can align the front edge with the 150 trim,

but I'm unsure exactly where to drill the holes for the clips. It would be
useful to know the exact vertical distance from the bottom of one of the
letters of the "Chevrolet" emblem to the centerline of the quarter trim.
Also. are the holes for the beltline trim on the top edge of the ridge that

runs under the trim? I'd appreciate any help anyone can offer. Also, while
I'm asking, is anyone aware of an original Delray with india ivory/ nassau

Is there a battery expert on the list? Most of us would probably like to
    know about this.

The 12V battery in my daily driver is 39 months old. Experience has taught

me that batteries die shortly after 36 months, no matter what the guarantee

says. Is there any reason not to just replace it and save the trouble of
having it die away from home?

The 6V battery in my 1936 Chevy pickup is 5 years old, should I replace it?

Years ago batteries seemed to fail slowly over a period of days, now it is
always a surprise and away from home. Is there a way to tell when a
    battery
    is nearing end of life?

Heard one on my fiancee's Road Music tape, by multiple artists, all car

and truck songs. the song is called " One foot on the pedal ( , one foot in

the grave..." ), the artist is Tracy Laurence. Its from a NASCAR cd called
"Hotter than Asphalt" . The one sentence sings " I drove a '57 Chevy to the

bottom of a lake"...basically a hard ridin' man! Was 17 by the time he was
10...LOL! Good song, good tape! If you want nothin' but road songs about
    cars
and drivin', this is a GOOD one! I highly recommend it, my fiancee loves
    it,
she used to drive a mini-stock race car in Texas about 6 years ago.
Anyway, add that to your list of songs with '57 Chevies in it.

Anyone need a '55/'56 Nomad/6 passenger station wagon gas tank? I've got
one, but it's going to need repair. It has rust-through in the same spot
under the mounting straps. Other than those two spots, it's good, and the
inside is still shiny. It's been dry since 1994, so welding is not a
    problem
(no hint of gasoline smell). $20 takes it. If it doesn't sell, it goes to

    the scrapyard. Shipping is additional.

I hope you can give me some information. Just today I received a notice
    that I am inheriting a 55
Corvette from my great uncle. On the papers I got, it is described as a
    55 Corvette with a 6
cylinder motor. My great uncle knew I was "into" cars so I guess this is
    why I am getting the
    car.

Could this description be correct. I find it hard to believe that a
Corvette ever had a 6 cylinder
engine. I can't imagine anyone taking out a V8 from a Corvette and
putting in a 6. Would this
    car be valuable.

    Jason

Editor's note. Jason, most people do not know that the first Corvettes had
    6 cylinder motors.
There was a good reason for this. It was not until 1955 that Chevy had a
    V8 motor. If the car
has a large gold V in the word Chevrolet on the front fenders then it came
out of the factory as a
V8. It would take a very unusual person to take the V8 out of a Corvette
and put in a 6. If the
car does NOT have the V in the word Chevrolet on the front fenders and it
    does have a 6 cylinder
motor, you will have a very very rare cars that would be worth a lot of
money. I think the 6 in
1955 had a 6 volt electrical system but I am not sure. Any list member
    know.?

I suggest you join a local Corvette car club. Also get an appraisal before
you insure it so you will know how much to insure it for.

This is regarding the inquiry on Steering Wheel Restoration.

Super Chevy publishes a special supplement every 6-8 months called, "Chevy
Classics." The summer, 2000, issue contains an extensive article on this
subject, complete with step-by-step photos. Look on pages 78-80.

The magazine cover shows a middle-aged man working on the engine of a red,
'57, 2-door hardtop, with a very young gal polishing the dash.

Back issues of this issue may be available through McMullen Argus
Publications, (714) 213-1030. If they don't have it let me know and I
could try scanning and e-mailing the article. (Note to editor: please
insure we have no copyright problem here).

Another idea would be to go to the Super Chevy website,

    make it available.

    Happy Holidays.

    Ref.: Shop airlines

    Hi Bob:

Always a great list. Hot Rod magazines Speedvision show just did a bit on
shop airline systems & their recommendation (along with my experience) was
    a
well prepared 1/2" "schedule 40" PVC system (cheap, flexible, strong and
reliable). Use reasonable quality pipe, fresh primer & cement (talk to your
guy @ Home Depot or wherever) and you won't have any problems. Take time
with a well thought out design; ball valve @ the compressor (shut down
    whole
system), dryer, regulator, properly secured to the wall, slope down
    slightly
from compressor for water management, down pipes around system for water
management, plenty of quick connects, etc... Schedule 40 pipe with
reasonably well done joints (clean cuts, fresh primer & cement) is good for
over 500 pounds pressure and home pressures are far below this rating.
Doesn't rust, easy to manage water and easy to adapt for future changes.
Soldering copper is a pain. Iron pipe rusts from the inside & will send
    bits
of rust through your precious air tools & ruin them. Galvenized(?) pipe may
be best for a high pressure pro-shop, but expensive, very difficult to cut
    &
thread & not easily changeable for the shade tree wrench.

    My two cents.

    Hi Bob,
This is for Mark who suggested using CPVC for the air lines and anyone
else thinking about it. I don't know what pressure his compressor works at
but mine and many others run at 150-160 psi. I have two separate lines in
my shop. There is a tee right off the pressure regulator and a braided blue
rubber air hose leading from each of the other two sides of the tee. One
hose is strictly for my bead cabinet and spark plug cleaner and the other
runs all my pneumatic tools. I ran the bead cabinet hose behind the
workbenches where it's out of the way. I used electrical conduit clamps to
hold it against the wall and it has worked fine for the past two years. I
believe the hose has a psi rating of 300 psi, much higher than CPVC. Wild
