I read somewhere that I can replace my 55 water temp gauge(with capillary
tube) with an electric gauge from a 56. Is this true? If so, what do you
use for a sending unit? Does anyone have a good one for sale?

Hi Bob and everyone, I sure could use some help from someone that has
installed a 605 box and used the stock 57 column. I got a tech tip from CCI
on how to cut your column down, but it still is not right. I went to a
local junk yard today and bought another 57 column, so I need to talk to
any one that has done this conversion on a 57 only. They tell me that 55
and 56 are easier to do because of more clearance between the firewall and
the 605 box. I cant afford to screw up another column because there isn't
that many to be found laying around. Also I talked to a company in Calif.
and they make their own columns, but the shift lever is on the inside of
the firewall and sticks out through the firewall. To me , that would be
hard to seal up the hole in the firewall. Well, if there is any one out
there that has done this, I sure would like to here from them. Keep up the
good work Bob. Some day I will meet you in person. Roger in IOWA

Hello Bob,

How are you?

Anyhow, just wanted to let you know that I was installing a turboglide on
to
my 283 and the torque converter wouldn't slip into the crank far enough. It

turns out that turboglide engines had more machine work done at the rear of

the crank to fit that large torque converter in place. Although G.M. only
shows one part number for a 57 283 crank, the turboglide crank is
different.
Now I am in the process of taken my rebuilt engine apart to have the crank
machined to fit my turboglide!

Thought I would let you know to save somebody else the trouble!

Brian Chudyk

Editor's note. Brian, you are right about the crankshaft. The ones used
with a Truboglide tranny
are not the same as the ones used by all other motors. I don't understand
how GM could list only 1 part number for the crankshaft when there are at
least 2 crankshafts used on the 283s. The crankshaft used for cars with a
Turboglide tranny have a larger "hole" at the end where the tranny connects
to the crankshaft. This is because the hub on the torque converter is
larger on a Turboglide. You can use a Turboglide crankshaft with any
transmission but you can not use a non Turboglide crankshaft with a
Turboglide tranny.

Happy New Year Bob, and to the Tri-Fivers on your list.
Has anyone had any experience with the replacement rear main poly seal for
the leaky rope seal on the early 283's? According to the seller, Roger
Howery, it fits in the 55-57 small blocks and can be done in the car with
NO
machine work. All this for $23.95 plus $4 S&H. Any feedback would be
appreciated.
Thanks.

chicken coops somewhere in the south? One of the Carolinas I think it was.
> My buddy Raul Munoz turned his brothers on to the web site and they paid
for some cars. They got lied to about the condition of the cars as was
evident when they saw the condition of them in real life. They also got
ripped off for one of them. They sent something like $11,000 for a pair of
cars and got one shipped to them and the seller arbitrarily sent a refund
of $4,000 back stating that the one they received was worth the balance and
they weren't going to get the other, etc. They had also heard of at least
two other buyers that had similar dealings with the chicken coop car guy.

Bob, Is the Rock & Roll Graffiti movie available on DVD ??? I
will definitely rent the Road To Nashville! Thanks for the info on these

Editor's note. Richard, I don't know if Rock and Roll Graffiti is
available on DVD. I have it on tape and as
soon as the price of a dvd recorder comes down, I am going to convert all
of my VHS tapes to DVD. I am now in the process of converting my audio
tapes to CD. I have already lost some of my oldest audio tapes because
they got old and were not playable any more. I don't know what the life of
an audio or video tape is but I believe that once they are converted to
CD/DVD, they will not go bad. Anyone know for sure. Will CD/DVD not
deteriorate?

Happy Holidays Tri-Fivers:
Hope everyone has a good Christmas! I have a question. As we all know the
traditional trophy for award winners at car shows seem to sit on the
kitchen table for about 48 hours then they seem to be taken out to the
garage. This year we would like to give our class winners something both
useful and practical - its not that easy to come up with something is
it? I am helping a fellow out that has a laser engraver, he also does
color sublimation, glass etching, etc., so we can put our logo on about
anything. Anyone have an idea? PLMK

Hi Bob, Happy New Year from Eastern Washington. I received some trunk
moulding for my 1962 B/A 409 coupe I am restoring. On the package was the
little gold sticker "made in China". They fit fine, although they are half

the weight as the originals. The mouldings came from Late Great Chevy,
Orlando florida. Is this the normal thing now? Its the first time I have
used anything on my cars made in China. If Late Great is doing this to save

money, they sure haven't lowered their prices to members. Am I whining to
much or will we find all GM equipment we use to be made in a foreign
country?

Bob,

Still enjoying your newsletter.

I have some questions about tri-5 carbs. Do you know anyway to identify a
57 carb if the tag is missing; for instance, the Rochesters have a number
stamped in the top of the carb and the Carters have a cast number in the
top.

I have a Carter that has 1098 cast in the top. I have been told it may be
a 1956 carb. I have a friend that has a Carter carb that has 1271 cast in
the top. Is that a 57? I also have a Rochester carb that has 9846 stamped
in the top. I have also been told it is a 57 carb. I would think these
numbers are more important that the tag numbers since reproduction tags are
available everywhere. I have the book that shows the tag numbers which are
useless if the tags have been changed, and most have been.

Thanks for any information you can send, keep up the great work, and as
always remember that 'GOD is Love' and even more!!!

Greetings, Bob,

Thanks for your weekly newsletter. It's always a real joy to receive and
read. It's New Year's Day, Tuesday, and I've just finished watching the
Tennessee vs. Michigan (TN won!).

I'm looking at painting my '48 Buick Sedannette during the winter/spring
season. Hope to have it ready to show and sell in the late spring, early
summer. Does anyone out there know a good, reliable auto painter
(individual
or a business) in Middle Tenn, Northern AL, or Southern KY? One who can do
an
adequate job without charging $4,000 to $7,000! There must be an
alternative.

Also, does anyone happen to know what color #17 is? It's a Buick color on
the
VIN plate. I think it may be a shade of blue. Car is now off-white. It's in

excellent shape with the exception of the paint, which is fair but not
great.
My goal is to trade or sell and get a Tri-Five, preferably a '55.

Again, thanks for the great newsletter. Keep up the effort in 2002! May
good
health and prosperity go out to you and your Tri-Five readers!

Bob, I did a Google search for Mohs and came up with this site:
http://retractable.free.fr/uk/index.html It shows a "mohs safarikar" which

looks like a modified Rolls or Bently, built from 1972 to 1975. It says
the
power is "front-mounted international harvester v8 / 392 ci." The one
shown

Bob, regarding your question about trophy ideas, out here in California
most car shows award plaques, rather than stand-up trophies. They are MUCH
easier to display. In fact, I prefer the plaques to the trophies because
I'm out of shelf space in the garage, anyway! You can print them with the
same silkscreen machine that does T-shirts, too. Just a thought.
