Jim Wargowski,
Regarding blast media:
I bought a blast cabinet & continue to buy my media from Kelco Sales
in Norwalk, even though it is 500 miles from home. I bought some media
from an outfit in San Fran area & got gypped. Name brand media is the
way to go. Potters is the only company that makes good glass media.
That's why I go to Kelco, they are a distributor. Eastwood sells good
stuff, but way too expensive. Beware of crap media which is mostly
powder and little "sand".
I could buy direct from Potters (in Oregon) but would need to get
500# of any individual size of media. Too much for me. Mostly I get 50#
bags.
Use steel grit on really rusty iron items (GP50); aluminum oxide in
120 mesh for heavy sheetmetal (that won't warp) and walnut shells for
exterior paint removal (sometimes plastic works too, depends on what
type of paint is being removed).
In general... glass beads cost about $0.50/lb. and aluminum oxide
$1.00/lb.

Hello Bob and everyone else out there,
Concerning music from the 50's and 60's, as today the radio stations
continually play the top 10, and as then you just get tired of the same few
songs played over and over. A few years back I was driving thru El Lay and
tuned into an oldies station. They were playing songs I hadn't heard since
the days of their release, it was wonderful to hear them again. I live in
San Diego, the weather is perfect but the radio stations stink, same ol top
10 over and over, how many times can you hear "Rock around the clock"?
Remember "Destiny" and "Cookie, Cookie lend me your comb" and "Yellow
polka-dot bikini"? Well if I go out to buy a compilation of oldies seems
like it's just the top 10, or songs I don't even remember (is my memory
that bad?). Does anybody know of a resource for the great songs that never
made it to the top 10, I'm after the top 20 or 30. Someone said there's a
web site that will tell you the top 40 for any given year but I don't have
that address, anybody know of it?
Thanks for being a sounding board Bob, it's nice to have a place to be
heard.

I highly recommend this replacement/update of the real engine seal. I did
this some years ago on my 265. It too leaked from the rear seal. All you
need do is drop the passenger side idler arm from the frame and let it
hang from the driver's side. You must do this to drop the oil pan. Drop
the pan, remove the rear main bearing cap. Use the rope seal removal tool
(this is important) ROTATE the engine while pulling on the seal. This
helps remove the oil seal in one piece. Install the new seal per
instructions and voila' NO LEAK.
Good luck

Bob,

Way back in the deep recesses of my mind, I seem to recall that various
Women's
Temperance movements in a number of areas used to decorate wagons
advertising
the evils of drink and drive around through the saloon districts preaching
and
looking for converts. This would have been in the late 1800's and early
1900's.
One who "saw the light" and swore off use of the devils brew was thus said
to be
"on the wagon", as I recall.

Bob,

Your editorial comment regarding Brian Chudyk's note on the crankshafts
used
with the Turboglide trans includes the comment that you "...don't
understand how
GM could list only 1 part number for the crankshaft when there are at least
2
crankshafts used on the 283s."

After all these years, it is just about impossible to say for certain.
However,
I'd be willing to bet that initial production of crankshafts for 1957 283s
were
all machined as the earlier units. There was probably a change to machine
the
deeper recess at some time after 1957 start of production (SOP). Since the
new
crankshaft configuration could also now be used for either application,
there
was no need to segregate them in production. All of the earlier design
machined
shafts would have been used up prior to the time the Turboglide option
became
available. And, of course, the later shaft was also fine for service use.
If one
could locate a copy of the original engineering drawing, the change block
would
tell the tale.

I can recall that it was common knowledge years ago that just adding a part
#
into the GM system cost $xxx, and was therefore to be avoided if possible.
If
one failed to observe and released a new # where not absolutely required,
you
could expect to be reminded of it!

Roy

Editor's note. That explanation make sense to me. As I think about it
more, I know of other parts that were changed, improved, etc and kept the
same part number. Some of these parts did not look at all like the old
ones. A few years ago I replaced some air conditioning parts on my
Explorer. They were totally different than the ones that came with the car
but they were the same part number. I thought that was odd at the time
but now I see why the part number was the same. These parts were an
improved version of the original part.

In response to Bill Hughes email about Parts made in China!!!!!! I totally

agree, it is a CRYIN' SHAME that so many companies are producing soooooo
many
products overseas!!!!!!! Is it EVER gonna stop????!!!! Sheesh! Yeah,
Late
Great Chevy AND Classic Chevy both, are selling repro parts made in China,
Taiwan, or wherever, something they vowed many years ago to absolutely
forbid!!!!!!!!! If anyone questions this, just check into your old Classic

Chevy World magazines! I have EVERY issue since the club started & there
was
a lot of controversy about this subject, BEFORE they started doing it! They

even took polls & asked the members if they wanted it or not. MOST members

were GREATLY opposed to this. Just goes to show what some people won't do
just to make more MONEY!!!!!!!! If that wasn't the case, they WOULD lower
the prices & pass the savings on to the member! Richard

Bob, Just a thought. I have many audio tapes that I recorded on
cassette in 1970 & thereabout, that still play as the day I recorded them.
Not sure about the life expectancy on video tapes, but if you use good
quality(CHEVY quality) tape, they should last a lifetime! On another note,
I
heard that some CD's will LASER ROT after time! I have a Buddy Holly CD
that
I looked at under a magnifying glass & a bright light & I could see tiny
holes in it, HOWEVER, It still plays fine! Anyone out there know anything
about this laser rot??? Maybe Fred Vail???? Richard

Hi Bob,

While watching some the various programs on T.V. celebrating Elvis's
Birthday January 8th, I saw a picture I'm very interested in and was
wondering if someone could help me locate a copy of this picture?

It seems in 1957 or 58, Elvis had just done a taping of the Steve Allen
show and had taken a train ride to Richmond, VA to do a concert.

On the way to this concert from the Hotel, Elvis rode in a '57 Chevy Taxi.
They showed a picture of Elvis exiting this Taxi on the show I was
watching.

I'd really like to find a copy to hang in my barn next to all my other '57
Chevy pictures.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks. RJ

Bob,

Your discussion with Brian Chudyk about the 283 crank and its compatibility
with a turbo tranny made me take pause to ask you about whether or not a
700R4 is compatible with the 283 engine. Is it a smart combo in your
estimation? I'm seriously considering this combo in my car. Thanks. We
love the LIST!

Doug Dean

Editor's note. I know you can use the 700R4 on a 283. I hope Steve Holmes
and other list members will respond on whether it is a good choice.

WARNING to EBAY buyers! Unfortunately there are some dishonest car people
out there who couldn't tell you the truth if there life depended upon it.
I recently had an experience in dealing with Route 7 Austo Sales in VA,
where the owner declared that the little Nova convertible was a show car
with
the exception of a ding in a piece of molding and a fleck of paint missing
from the valve cover. I checked his feedback and 99% of it was positive.
So
being a big dummy I took his word for it and purchased the car. When I
received it I thought he had shipped the wrong car. I immediately
contacted
him and pointed out the discrepancies in what he had professed the car to
be
and what it really was. He refused to make it good or any other type of
remedy. To make a long story short(er), I sold the car after losing
several
thousand dollars- however, I made sure that I made it clear to the buyer
that
it was only a driver at best. So car people, let behoove to be honest in
our dealings and "let the buyer beware' when it comes to Ebay or other
auctions. John

Editor's note. I have purchased some stuff on e-bay and I want to second
what John had to say.
Most things are as they are described but SOME ARE NOT. Don't rely on the
feedback system. Just because it is good does not mean the product is as
described. If it a large purchase, I suggest you find out from the seller
where the item is and if at all possible, have someone in that area take a
look at it BEFORE you bib on the item.

I read somewhere that I can replace my 55 water temp gauge(with
capillary tube) with an electric gauge from a 56. Is this true? If so,
what do
you use for a sending unit? Jack, 55 Nomad

Jack, you must replace both the sending unit in the manifold and the
gauge in the instrument cluster.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------

Has anyone had any experience with the replacement rear main poly seal?

Yes, I've had one in my 55 265 for almost 2 years, not a drop of
leakage.

I'm wondering if anyone knows a place in the Los Angeles area to buy

Look in your local yellow pages under "abrasives", there should be many
to choose from. Some companies in our area even deliver for free.

Roger, The reason that you cut the column for your 57 was the instructions
that you followed
from CCI was wrong. These people take for granted that all the tri5 are the
same and they are not.
The fire wall in the 55 and 56 are the same but the 57 is different. The
reason that I know this is
that I screwed up a good column just like you did by following their
instructions. I got another
column, took my own measurements and fixed one correctly. I am working on
another 57 now
and I used a 605 and installed a tilt wheel and it looks factory. If you
want to make a good
looking classic that is the way to go but remember that you have to modify
the gage cluster and
the part under the column that mates to it. It can be done and it is a
killer job but you must be
very careful. If you would like yours to be converted to a tilt find a
column from an early 70s
chevy pickup or van (one that has the ignition switch in the dash, not on
the column) send it to
me along with your gage cluster minus all gages etc with mating part from
under column along with a new rag joint and I will make all modifications
and welding for
$250.Good luck,
