BOB

To John Holmes, I just want to say RIGHT ON. I agree with you 100 percent.
The way I see it is
Bob is giving us a free gift each week. If anyone doesn't like what Bob is
sending them I am sure
he will take them off the list if they ask.

There is a lot of stuff in my daily newspaper that I don't want to read. I
just skip it and go on the
next page. It is just that simple.

Bob and all,

I just replaced the oil seal on my '55 BelAirs right rear axle, but
it's still leaking. Now my problem is that I can't get the brake drum off
so
I can pull the axle again. It seems that the drum is pressed too tight on
the
center of the axle hub. I have adjusted the brake shoes so that the drum
spins freely so I know that the brakes are not interfering with the drums
removal.
I need suggestions on how to get the brake drum off. I have heated the
drum, but its just pressed on too tightly. Does anyone know of a tool that

will pull the drum off the axle, or can I just pull the axle and drum off
as
one unit?

Thanks, Kim

Editor's note. I saw a tool in the Eastwood catalog that claimed to be
able to remove brake drums.

I think their web site is www.eastwood.com

Anyone have a use for a '55 passenger side front inner fender and a pair of

4dr sedan rear doors? The doors need some work on the bottom, but the
inner
fender looks good (although it has surface rust). These items will have to

be picked up at my house, which is near Reading, PA (about an hour NW of
Philadelphia). $30 takes them all. I can send a picture if interested.

I have an original '55 Chevy grille that I'd like to get rid of, but I
don't
want to send it to the recycler. It has some rust pits and doesn't look
suitable for rechroming. No rot though. If someone wants a grille to
paint
for their modified '55, this will be great for that. Asking just $15 plus
shipping. I can provide a picture if interested.

Bob,

I have read the comments about changing oil at running temps vs ambient
temps. I don't buy the theory that cold oil sticks to various engine parts
in the valve train, etc. While that is true, the commenters assume that
none of the oil drained the last time the engine was run and turned off.
It drains as best it can every time the engine is turned off, provided it
has been run for a period of time. I, for one, don't have a habit of
starting my engine, running it for a minute or two, and then turning it
off. That is the most damaging time for an engine.

When I know I'm going to change my oil, I will either pull the auto onto
the ramps the night before and let the hot oil drain all night or either
jack the auto up without starting the engine. I think draining all night
will always get more of the oil out than changing a hot engine that has
only drained 10 minutes. Once an engine has drained, the only thing that
may be in contact with the oil is the oil pan and the lower part of the
crank depending on the size of the oil pan and the level of oil in it. To
make sure that the oil pan drains as best it can, I simply let it drain
until there are no more drips.

I do agree that if you start a cold engine, pull it up on ramps, and change
oil immediately, you will not get proper drainage. Maybe that's what the
guys think most people do???

Buy the way, I'm looking for a set of 15" redline radial tires if anyone
has a set for sell. I would like to have a set of the 'SSE' radials that
Uniroyal made a few years back.

Thanks Bob for this fantastic site, keep up the good work, and as always,
remember that 'GOD is Love and even more'!!!

Ken

Editor's note. I don't know the answer to oil changing. I have heard the
theory that you should change the oil when it is cold so more oil will
stick to the engine parts so it will be there when you start the engine
after the oil is changed. The theory says that this will prevent engine
parts from moving without oil after an oil change.
It is claimed that the small amount of old dirty oil will be removed by the
new filter.

WOW, what an overwhelming response to my parking brake handle removal
question. I must have received about 14 e-mails responding to my post!
Thanks to all who responded!! I did get the new handle on this weekend. I
used the same method that most suggested. I had to cut the metal sleeve
off with a cutting wheel, after I drilled out most of the pin. I guess
after almost fifty years, the two metal pieces just did not want to leave
each other. Anyway, THANKS TO EVERYONE!

Memo to Gary Howard (Garys Gearbox): The Bob Ford "57-56-55
Chevy List" is strictly a fabulous VOLUNTEER gift from the
heart of a fabulously
wonderful guy named Bob Ford who plans to live forever! It is not
a "site" that was "intended" for anything and any content is strictly
and rightfully the decision of Bob. The rest of us out there who
treasure reading and enjoying this list in our e-mails do not
invite the criticism of anyone subscribing to this VOLUNTEER
list. We merely owe our heartfelt gratitude and kudos to this
super guy that makes our day and pursuit more worthwhile
and enjoyable. Our 57 Nomad and 57 Convertible grilles
smile at the very mention of the words "Bob Ford!"
Addendum to Memo: Please feel free to add this to the list of
"sites" that you quit.
A huge thanks, Bob!

Hi Bob and everyone--
Great job on the list. Sure got some folks riled up about all the computer
talk, but I think a few tips here and there wouldn't hurt anyone. Now
here's
a tip for all the semi-computer literate folks that would seriously like to
get more educated. There is a TERRIFIC website that covers everything you
could ever want to know from discussion forums to tutorials. Give it a
shot.

Hi Bob,

Just thought I'd mention that I love to receive this newsletter. I've been
restoring 5,6,7's for a number of years and you are never too old to learn
something about these "beauties".

I have the distinct honor of owning the red and white 1955 Nomad that the
Johnny Lightning series models were tailored after. It's a 1/64th scale
model of the tri-chevy series 4 collection. The picture on the packaging
is
of my car here that I took at the park. I know it's mine for three
reasons.
1) They contacted me to ask for pictures which I sent them and they used,
2), the front license plate has my plate that reads "GENUINE CHEVROLET" on
it which mine has, and 3) I have a letter signed by them thanking me for
letting them use my car for this proto type. I since have sold the car,
but it was mine. Item number from Johnny Lightning is: 454-04.

Keep up the good work,

George Masters
mastersg@minot.com

Editor's note. George, are you in Minot North Dakota? If you are you
might enjoy this. When I was a kid in the Navy, I had to fly to Minot Air
force Base ( I am not sure it is still there). This was in January. I had
no idea where Minot was. I ask someone else that was going on the trip if
I needed a coat. I was thinking it might be in Florida. As you can see,
geography was not my strong subject in school. They told me the expected
low was going to be 32 that night. I thought that is not bad, a light coat
would work in the day time. As you can guess it was 32 at night. 32
below zero.

To Gary Howard, Bob's list IS mostly about Tri-five CHEVYS, however there
are some things on this list like some trivia, some talk of old music, some

info about computers that may involve all of us, & a few other interesting
topics. I find that MOST all of what is on this list is either
interesting,
related somehow to our cars, or quite informative! & I'm sure many readers

agree! All I have to say to anyone who finds a subject unfitting or not of

their interest, is to SCROLL DOWN to the next subject or email until you
DO
find something that sparks your interest! I'm sure you will find something

that does interest you! IF you find NOTHING of interest on this list,
then
you shouldn't be reading it at all !!!!!!!!!!!!! Richard

Bob,
When I was a teenager, my brother bought a new 57 Chevy as did many of his
friends. I remember they frequently talked about a "close ratio"
transmission
. What was/is that? I recall that when shifting, there was very little
movement of the shift lever to go into another gear. Help please.

Hi Bob,
I just want to insert a word of caution on using old seat belts from a
salvage yard. If anyone wants to use the salvage yard belts make sure they
are not rotted. Old belts in a salvage yard get wet and dry regularly
unless the car has all its' windows and they are rolled up. I remember
years ago that owners manuals told you how to keep your belts in good
condition and what to use when you cleaned them. Some manuals also
recommended replacing the belts after a certain number of years. Old seat
belts are like old tires-not too safe! Thanks again, Bob. WIld Bill

I was saddened to read about the death of Van Swearingen, movie ranch
owner,
here in Chatsworth. He passed away of cancer on Tuesday and no other
information was given regarding services or anything. I would believe he
wanted to keep it private, as in December he donated the use of 6 of his
beautiful '57 Bel Air convertibles for the Annual Holiday Parade in
Chatsworth and the previous years as many as 20. He has in his collection
mostly '57 Chevys, all colors of the convertibles or at least he told me he

located the last one in Denver. All 15 or 16 of them. He walked around the

cars at the car show and I talked to him a bit regarding his cars. You
would
not have suspected anything was taking him away.

He did let the parade committee know in January though that he would not be

able to donate the use of his cars again this next year. He must have
known
he would not be here to do that.

He will be missed as a person that shared his love for classic cars and old

movie sets with those in the community that is trying to hold on to those
olden days of cowboy movies. Most were shot on his ranch, known as Iverson

Ranch, so many years ago. He and his wife own the part of the ranch that
have dates of many movies, with signatures and hand or footprints of actors

stamped in the walkway around the ranch of stars and movies that were done
there. Some of the old movie buildings and sets are still standing to this

day and were open for events such as car show with BBQ as was this past
fall.

I don't know if any of you knew him or not but wanted to get the word out
so
you would know that a devoted '57 Chevy lover has left us for a more
peaceful
time in a quieter place. May he rest in peace!
