Bob,

In the past I have seen many list members asking about the Powerglide
problem called "burping" where fluid comes out of the fill tube. The only
solution I have ever heard of was to install one way valves in the fluid
coolant lines.
I was looking thru an old issue of CCW magazine (March 93) and came
across an article that explains why and how to fix this problem.
This is the article and if any list members would like the 2 photos that go
along with the article I can send them a copy.

"BURPING POWERGLIDES!"

""This is a common problem: Fire up your old Chevy, put it in "Drive"
or "Reverse", move it, shut it off and get out. Turn around and look at
your garage floor....YIPES!! its a flood of red fluid! No, not really,
just a quart or so of transmission fluid.

Many original Powerglide transmissions do this. The transmission fluid
backs up out of the dipstick/fill tube and runs on the floor. The cure?
Simply remove the dipstick side cover from the transmission by removing the
attaching bolts. Place a drain pan under the side cover area to catch any
fluid that may run out. Remove the bolt which secures the suction pipe and
pickup screen and remove the pipe and screen assembly.
Usually, transmissions with lots of miles or with burned clutches will
exhibit a large amount of "sludge" plugging up the pickup screen. So,
simply clean the screen and pipe assembly in a parts washer to remove all
the sludge. Also clean out the cavity in the transmission surrounding the
screen pickup area. Make sure the tube is not cracked or broken, be sure
the o-ring seal between the pipe and transmission body is intact.
Reassemble and your problem should be solved! The plugged pickup screen
and tube was causing back pressure and aeration of the fluid, thus pumping
it out the fill tube.
If you still have the same problem with the transmission, you may have
a bad front pump or some other internal problem. In this case the
transmission should be rebuilt. See Section & in your Shop Manual for more
transmission information.""

Hi Bob and fellow List members:
I have been really pleased with the chroming done for me by Delta
Plating in Stockton, CA. Talk to Doug Baker @209 948 2768.
They have done both a 57 Nomad and a 40 Ford (Chevy powered!) front and
rear bumpers, grill, and trim for me in the last year (12-15 pieces,
$1200- $1500, 4 - 6 weeks turnaround.)
Quality is excellent to my eye, and some of the pieces I gave them were
pretty rough.
Thanks again for the List Bob.

Hi Bob:
Thanks again for the list and a special thanks for the referral to the
"Rich Dad, Poor Dad" books.
They are startling, enlightening, and potentially life-changing - I
guess that's up to me.
I appreciate the List content outside of the Tri-five area. I skip over
what doesn't interest me.
Thanks again,
Jim Morgan

Editor's note. Glad you liked the books. They can indeed be life
changing. I was luck to learn the lessons the books are teaching many
years ago and it was life changing for me. If I had only learned the
lessons when I was in my 20's , I would not have my money in a bank, I
would have owned the bank. I was lucky to teach some high school kids
personal finance recently. One of the first things I asked them was "Do
you want to work at Burger King or own a Burger King?"

Parts Wanted: I need a competition Plus four speed shifter for a 55 chev
with a bench seat. The shifter should be for a late model Borg Warner Super
T-10 four speed trans and should have the large "C" shapped shifter handle.
There is a difference between the "shift rods" for each of the four major
four speeds. The Muncie, BorgWarner, Borg Warner Super T-10, and Saginaw.
The shifter body is the same for the Borg Warner and the Muncie. I also
would entertain the idea of buying just the shifter as I can get the
Installation kit from any number of suppliers.

Bob: So far as I can recall it has been buyer beware. It has only been
since the market on the tri-fives and related merchandise exploded that
folks have been so liberal about buying something on someone's word. Just a
few years ago this was unheard of. And now after a trial run at testing one
another's honesty we look as though we are going back to taking a hard look
at thecars and parts prior to laying down our hard earned money. Like many
folks I too have a story about buying a car. My purchase took place in
Gattlinburg in October 2000. It was on a Sunday and that week end had been
a meet of some kind that brought tri-fives from all over.
In the 1980's and early 90's I had built several show cars for
customers and had been kind of burned out. But I had decided to do one more
for myself. As I was driving down the main road in Pigeon Forge there was a
hotel lot that had about a dozen cars sitting there with for sale signs on
them. One was a 1955 chev 210 painted plum and silver and looked pretty
good. When I stopped to look at it there was a phone number on it with no
price. I looked it over pretty good from the outside and it had a decent
new drivers paint job. I tried to crawl under it but due to worn springs
and the way it was sitting I only had limited vision. I felt along the
usual place and there was no holes. Besides that every time I tried to look
under the bright sun would not permit my eyes to adjust. The car was gutted
but all the parts were in the car.
I did not see any holes in the floor or evidence that it had been patched.
I called the number and the guy showed up. He popped the trunk and opened
the door. There was no rust anywhere in the wheel well, but some small rust
in the corner of the tail pan.Again the inside of the car was blocked by
windshields seats and numerous parts. I stuck my hand in and felt around
the floor and did not feel any holes. So I bought the car.
I made arrangements for the guy to deliver it to Cincinnati, Ohio the
next day. Our written agreement called for him to wrap the windshields so
they would not get scratched, furnish me a good title, "acceptable to the
state of Ohio", and round up some additional parts.
The agreement also listed numerous new parts that went with the car as well
as a detailed list of the stainless. In return, I was to pay him in cash
upon delivery the discounted price of the car, plus a delivery charge. Then
as soon as possible I was to build him a Muncie 4 speed transmission of
about $1000.00 value
He arrived at dark the following day with the car on a roll back. It
was raining and a bad day. Everything was hurry up and I had a bad feeling.
He off loaded the car and kept the roll back running. I went over the list
and noticed that he had just thrown a blanket over the windshields and as
he went over the list of new parts I noticed that some were open and the
stainless was all bunched and wrapped with masking tape. The title
consisted of a notarized Bill of Sale from Alabama where he was jumping
titles. He had never put the car in his name. I knew better but I paid him
and he left.
The next day, I called the DMV in Ohio to discover that they would not
accept a Bill of Sale from Alabama, period.
Next, I unloaded the car to find the new windshield scratched deeply in the
field of drivers vision to the point it was useless. I called the guy and
he said that he would try to get some more paperwork on the car and he was
sorry about the windshield. Finally, I noticed that the floor of the car
looked funny and after checking a little closer and taking two big screw
drivers, I pried a huge piece of fiber glass that was covering the entire
floor, and you guessed it. The floor was ruined.
After working with the State of Alabama and Ohio for six months and
then going before a committee in Columbus, Ohio, I finally got a good
title, (not a salvage title) and I put I new floor in the car and since I
am a certified welder It was not that difficult. The man never returned
another phone car or sent me any more paperwork on the car. The good side
to this is that there really was no rust in the wheel well areas both
inside the car, the trunk or underneath. The bad side for the fellow from
Gattlinburg was that he never got that Muncie Transmission and I never
heard from him again. Funny thing about a man doing something like that, he
owns and operates a hotel and has a bunch of cabins that he rents out. So
even someone in the public eye is not above scamming people over these
cars. My car is almost ready to paint and the frame is all finished from
front to rear complete with crate motor and new Borg Warner 4 speed.
Buyer beware.

Regarding the headlight switch, we purchased one from East Coast Chevy
OL'55
and am very pleased with it for our '56 Nomad. They have a choice of
American-made or foreign-made, which we purchased the latter. Their phone
is
215-348-5568 and they have a fax also which is 215-348-0560. They have a
very good catalog available also if anyone wants one. They have been very
helpful and nice on the telephone with us. We have purchased many items
from
them since because of their courteous and helpful staff.
We went to check out that Video place in Lockport but they were closed
Saturday. Their name is Video Services and their direct phone (according
to
our phone book) is 716-433-6592.
2-door vs. 4-door: 2-doors are better looking! There's a '55 4-door
wagon running around our area with a Nomad emblem that he says is original
-
of course, we just smiled, said ok, and walked away.

Has anybody out there really figured out a classy roof rack that will carry
surfboards on my Nomad? Leaving the rear liftgate window open is breezy
after an hour and excludes rear seat pasengers.; I could do the gutter
mounted racks which is the "real thing" from the 70's but am afraid of
scratching paint, etc.; plus they sort of ruin the clean "lean angle" of
the Nomad styling. The original chrome bolt on racks (drill the roof) are
impossible to find and I don't think they would be strong enough to hold
surfboards down in a 75mph headwind--would they?; Anyone out there have the
perfect rack for a Nomad (strong, functional and good looking)?

back a fellow had posted that you could use a power booster from a 76-80

Also, I'm still looking for a cab to replace my damaged 57 small window

I just happen to be working on a 57 original power steering unit that is
out of the car now. The pitman arm casting number is 3709453
followed by GMT10.

The biggest difference between a PS pitman arm and a non-ps arm is that
the non-ps arm has a ball attached to arm that is non removable. The ps
arm has a tapered hole for the separate ball stud attached to the ball.
It bolts on like a tie rod end.

The non-ps casting number is 3719487

"Howdy," Bob,

It's always great to get your Chevy List. So many folks willing to offer
advice, share experiences, answer the multitude of questions from the 'less

enlightened.' Yes, that sure would describe me!

Over the past couple of years, I've often sent you 'tidbits,' including
loads
of stories about the many 50s, 60s, music acts I have had the good fortune
of
knowing and working with through the years. Of course, that would certainly

include "America's Band," The Beach Boys, a group I first promoted in '63,
emceed their 'live' concert album, '64, and managed, 69-72.

I have also written several times regarding finding a home for my '48 Buick

Sedannette. Since your letter goes to primarily Tri-Five aficionados, I've
not had much luck in that department! But, as my dear late mother used to
say: "If at first you don't succeed, try, try, again." So, with that in
mind,
let me through this out to your wonderful readers. Perhaps, it will appeal
to
one of them. If not, perhaps, they may know someone who is just the right
person for this offer.

I do not have a lot of 'cash,' (I bought out my two former recording studio

partners last year and its been a rebuilding process over the past twelve
months). In the 'classics' world, I'm learning that 'cash is king.'
However,
I've got a great 'black plate' California car--the '48 Buick
Sedannette--along with $6,500.00 cash, and a great assortment of rock
memorabilia, worth an additional $8,000.00 to $10,000.00. A large portion
of
my collection is on loan to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in
Cleveland, OH.

So, to 'sweeten' the trade, I'm offering the following: a 'mint' circa
'63/'64 poster of one of my early Beach Boys concerts personally
signed/autographed by two of the three 'surviving' original members of the
band, Brian Wilson and Alan Jardine; an unsigned 'mint' poster of the same
show (sell that one for $1,750.00 to $2,500.00); a 'mint' Paul Revere and
The
Raiders poster from '63; a 'mint' handbill from my October 1964 Jan & Dean
concert, recorded 'live' for their concert album (by the way, that show
featured an unknown singer by the name of Glen Campbell, who is also
featured
on the handbill); a 'mint' handbill from my September 14, 1963 concert also

starring The Beach Boys; two 'mint' unused ticket stubs from a Beach Boys
concert in Boise, ID ('64); four assorted rare, 'original' 8 X 10 glossy
publicity photos (Jerry Lee Lewis, Jimmie Rogers, Pat Boone, The Beach
Boys)
all in 'mint' condition; and--as a special 'bonus,' --a rare, mint
'autographed' copy of John Wayne's classic album, "America: Why I Love
Her,"
released on RCA Victor Records in 1972.

This album was often mentioned by radio stations (as well as played on the
air) following the tragic events of September 11, 2001. The album was
repackaged, and reissued, on cassette and CD following 9-11, but this is
the
'original,' unplayed, vinyl album, signed for me by "The Duke," himself.
Very
rare.

All-in-all, this special memorabilia 'package' is worth approximately
$9,000.00 to $10,000.00. So, the total, including the '48 Buick, $6,500.00
cash, and the memorabilia, is $25,000.00 to $27,000.00. I would want a '55
(preferably), '56, or '57 Chevy valued in that same general range--not a
'project' car, or one with no engine and transmission, full of dents, and
painted chartreuse! Value to value, a solid $25,000.00 to $27,000.00
Tri-Five. I'm ready to do the deal 'now.'

If anyone out there is open to this 'swap,' or knows of someone who would
be
ideally suited to such a trade, please pass along my name. Thanks!!

This is for Mark, who asked about the casting numbers on a 55-57 power
steering pitman arm. The number that is cast in the arm is 3709453
followed by several other letters and numbers.

I have come across at least three different castings for the non-PS
pitman arms.

Remember, the non-PS arms will have a ball stud built into it. The
correct PS arm will not have a ball stud, it will have a tapered hole
that the stud from the PS valve fits into. This is the easiest way to
tell them apart at a glance.

Hope this helps.
