To the list members...

Can anyone tell me if the interior roof bows on a 55 hardtop are chrome
plated steel or stainless steel? They appear to be chrome plated steel.

Also is there a source for parts? and an interior layout as to which bows
go where? measurements, etc.

Thanks in advance...

SCRAPPAGE IS DEFEATED ON U.S. SENATE FLOOR !

Attention SEMA Board of Directors, SEMA Staff, Automotive Enthusiasts and
Friends:

Thank you all for your hard work in opposing, and now defeating, the old
car scrappage provision in the Energy Policy Act of 2002 (Section 822 of
S.517).

In case you haven't heard the news, Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell's (R-CO)
amendment to eliminate scrappage from the legislation was - astonishingly
enough - passed by unanimous consent. In the end, even the principal
sponsor of the scrappage provision, Senator Jeff Bingaman (D-NM), was not
willing to oppose the Campbell amendment!

This is fantastic work, work that would not have been possible without the
literally thousands of phone calls, faxes, emails and letters to U.S.
Senators that SEMA member businesses and SEMA Action Network vehicle clubs
and individual enthusiasts were able to muster. Hobbyist efforts were
cited
by Senator Campbell and Senator Sam Brownback (R-KS) as a compelling force
in defeating this scrappage provision.

SEMA sincerely thanks everyone for their dedication, hard work, and
willingness to protect the vehicle hobby today and to preserve for it for
our children. We are also very indebted to the efforts of Senator Ben
Nighthorse Campbell. Without his exceptional effort and support, victory
would have been impossible.

This is an amazing victory and a testament to the powerful connection
between the specialty aftermarket automotive industry and the American
vehicle hobbyist community.

Job well done.

Hi All,
I'm looking to replace the rearend in my 57 with a Ford 9", but I don't
know
what donor car to pull the rear from. I'm hoping there is a Ford car that
had the same width rear or one that is only a couple of inches narrower. I
can't go with any wider rear than what I have now. I believe the rear from
housing flange to housing flange is 55 1/4". If anybody out there who has
done this can help me I would greatly appreciate it.
As usual, a great list!!! Thanks, Bob Ford

Hey Bob,
This is for Richard who bought the 56 with the mouse nests and urine odors
in
the car. Go to an industrial chemical supply house. Buy a gallon of
QUATERNARY AMMONIUM SANITIZER. Mix 1 oz. of the sanitizer to 1 gallon of
water and spray the interior of the car. You can use a spray bottle. Quat
sanitizer will digest the odor causing bacteria and the odor should be
gone.
Quat has a 24 hour residual after being sprayed on surfaces. We use it in
the food industry for sanitizing food contact surfaces. It will also make
yeasts and mold disappear from surfaces. Give it a try. Hope this helps.

Bob,
I just received the following letter from Belgium requesting help. If
anyone can provide this information please contact me at
fastimage@attbi.com
Thanks for your help.
Floyd

Hi,

I work for Customer Care for Opel Belgium (GM Europe) and one of our
customers has a question about his classic Chevy's.

He would like to know the maximum towing weights for his vehicles,
because without these he cannot register the vehicles in the Netherlands.
The
Dutch RDW refuses to register these cars without this information.

His first vehicle is a 1969 Chevrolet Bel Air stationwagon,
chassisnumber is 1556992053082 and the engine is a 6 cyl. 250 cubic inch.
The second car is a 1948 Chevrolet Fleetline, chassis number is
14FKF28772, engine 6 cyl. 216 cubic inch.

I have tried to get the necessary information through our normal
channels within GM USA, but unfortunately they don't appear to keep this
kind of
information for cars this old.

I really would like to help this customer... It would mean that a few
more Chevrolet cars can be seen on our European roads.

Would it be possible to send me this information, perhaps even a
photocopy of the original information of a similar vehicle in the US??

Kind regards.

Dear Bob,

As always, your list is a joy to read. Thank you for the time and effort
you devote to it and the hobby.

The last couple of lists have had some topics that prompted me to
contribute something to your list. First is the subject of Nomads. Yes
they made a 1958 wagon called a Nomad. A friend of mine had one. It was a
dressed up Belair. 1958 was the first year for the Impala, so GM came up
with a fancy version of the wagon and used the Nomad name. My friends car
was a 348cu. with power glide,(which he later converted to 4 speed).
The significant difference between the tri-5 Nomads and any other wagons
was that it was a two door hardtop station wagon, with ribbed roof, ribbed
tailgate, sliding rear seat/cargo area windows and all came in Belair trim.
The only other two door wagon was available in the "Handyman" series which
was very plan and has a full frame door. I do not know this as fact, but
suspect that GM used the name Nomad on the '58 only because of the
introduction of the Impala as the new top line package over the Belair. So
to make wagon buyers feel a little special, they applied the Nomad sticker
to up grade from a Belair.
Another topic was "Suicide doors". Please correct me if I am wrong, but my
understanding of the term was that in the event of a front end accident,
the doors would pop open and throw you out on the steet! The idea of the
rear hinged door design was for ease of entry and exit from the seat.
Can anyone suggest a rechrome company in the Baltimore MD area? Like
everyone, I am looking for a good job at a reasonable price. Not building
a show car, but do want to end up with a nice driver.
Bob, again...thanks loads for this forum.

Hi Bob, I bought a '58 Chevy Bel-Air two-door hardtop last summer. It has
the infamous 348 engine with a Turboglide transmission. The transmission
worked well, but had a very annoying vibration at highway speed. After
eliminating all other possibilities, I determined that the imbalance was in
the torque converter. I have since removed and disassembled the entire
transmission, looking for anything that could be a problem. The unit was
very clean and looks to be in excellent shape overall. Are you familiar
with anything specific that could cause the vibration and is there anything
specific I should check?

I was able to acquire everything locally here in San Diego that I need to
rebuild the Turboglide except for one item. I have not been able to find a
replacement bushing for the one that goes in the cover of the torque
converter. Of course, it is the one that shows the most sign of wear and
may be part of the problem with the imbalance. Do you have any idea where
I can get one of these bushings? I would appreciate anything you could do
to point me in the right direction.

recommendations or knows where I can get one reasonable let me know. I dont
mind paying for quality, but expect it when I do pay the big dollars. I
would like to find one close to my state of Kansas. I know of a guy in

Dear Bob,
Your list is fantastic and informative as always. I enjoy reading every
word you forward to all us list members. Keep up the Great work. Bob, I
just recently purchased the Digital Dash & Clock (Red) from Dakota Dash.
And I started to install it and so far things are going great. It comes
with a Control Box that most of the electronic wires connect into. And then
you have to mount it permanently . And that's where my troubles lie. You
see most people that have this set up mount the control box behind the kick
panel on the driver's side. But, there is a problem for me there because
when I started updating my 1957 Chevy Hard Top I put in the new updated
push in style fuse box and also for better Audio I added the ABS Plastic
kick panels with 130 watt speakers formed right into the panel for my
stereo. So I have no room on either side behind the kickpanels. My question
is this> Where can I mount this control box? The measurements are approx.
4"W x 6" L x 1 1/2" tall. Can any one help? Thanks Bob for all your help.

NEW SYSTEM TO TRACK STOLEN CARS

For years it's been possible to track stolen cars if they
were equipped with a special signal-sending system. Now
scientists say they have developed a new generation of
car-finding technology, using satellite and GPS systems.
In the past, systems sent out a continuous "find-me" signal
that could be located through triangularization. The system
is the same that has been used for centuries to locate
forest fires from high towers. Draw lines on a map from
each of three points toward the fire. Where the lines cross
on a map, there's the fire. With the new system, a unit in
a stole vehicle uses GPS technology to discover where it
is. Then, after determining its location and finding out
its exact longitude and longitude, it sends that
information using cell phone channels to a central office.
The office, working with police departments, then finds
the stolen vehicle. The system is called SecuraTrak. The
units will be lease-able at about $10 a month with a
one-time activation fee of about $50 for the basic
service.
