This is about getting a wiper motor for a '56 Chevy.

Someone asked me recently where to get one. I thought I'd heard or read
that J. C. Whitney has replacement motors that work for '55-57 Chevys. Is
this true? What length of shaft? Do you have to order replacement arms
and blades, too?

For all of the gear heads out there that just love to run the standard
shift transmissions, there is good news especially if you like the Muncie 4
speed transmission.
Just a few words about these transmissions. They were introduced in late
1962 for the 1963 models. These aluminum cased gear boxes have proved their
worth. First of all they are the least expensive of the durable and fixable
four speed transmissions. In the 39 years that they have been around, no
other transmission is more closely related to the success of General Motors
cars that have a manual transmission. They have always been inexpensive to
repair and rebuild and up to the past few years the quality of G. M. Delco
has been unsurpassed. There are many other transmissions out there today
from at least a dozen different company s. Some of these boxes cost from
$1300.00 to $7000.00. So not only are they expensive from the get-go, a
repair will often break your budget. Consider this, recently a friend of
mine tore third gear out of his Richmond 5 speed. The two matching gears
cost over $800.00 and this does not cover labor.
The problem with the Muncie is that it had some problems straight from
manufacturing and these problems
have never been corrected until now. A very progressive American Company
has redesigned the Muncie front case and made it stronger and more durable.
Also the rail housing has been redesigned and remanufactured as well. Just
as important, the center support, the plate that holds the rear bearing has
been remanufactured and instead of using aluminum, it has been
remanufactured using nodular Iron. Since most of the torque in the Muncie
is transferred to the rear bearing and center support, this will greatly
reduce the flex in the Muncie Transmission. These parts along with the well
made aftermarket Muncie gear sets on the market today enable us gearheads
to run a very good performing transmission even after all these years.
With all of these improvements the cost to put a Muncie
together with new parts is still a good value today, especially when
compared to the other transmission companies that manufacture manual
transmissions today. It is just a fact of life that there are no more low
mileage Muncies out there for $275.00. Even if there is one out there this
is not the norm. I have not seen an outstanding Muncie cross my bench in
the past 8 years.
Finally, I spoke to a fellow recently who told me that during the past
couple of years he had been buying up Muncie cores, you know worn out
broken and busted boxes. He was proud of the fact that he had accumulated
300 of these cores.Given the poor quality of the Muncie transmissions
since about 1990. I do not believe that he has the value and high quality
of parts that he would have had if he had bought these boxes in the 70's
or 80's. The cost to repair and remanufacture a Muncie aluminum case is
about $140.00. Also the cost to repair a mainshaft can run as high as
$75.00. And many of the maindrive gears need the tip of the gear repaired,
(the part that rides in the pilot bearing. This translates in a lot of
extra labor to box and ship parts to highly specialized folks all over the
country to get your parts fixed properly. So instead of tearing a muncie
down and putting bearings, brass and a master rebuild kit into the box and
sending it on its way, we either have to repair all of the things that
wrong with it or go with the new parts to cut your labor as well as the
time that you hang on to someone's transmission.
I just received an order of new Muncie cases, center supports and tail
housings. The workmanship is fantastic. beautiful castings and machine
work. They are now using "O" rings to seal the two side plugs in the main
case and a sealing plug in the front where the steel pin comes through thr
front of the case. The tail house has extra meat in it where they tend to
crack and are very good looking compared to the old GM units. The gears and
gearsets are being made by one gear company in Italy. Prior to making the
Muncie gearsets this company had already been in the gear business for
years. As I understand it, the owner of this company came to the US and
studied these gears under several gear companies as well as General Motors.
I have been using his gears for two years.........without a failure.
His company has produced some different gearsets, sets I have not yet seen
but heard about. One gearset is a true overdrive gearset that fits in the
Muncie box. It is a 2:20 first gear and 4th gear (final gear) instead of
being direst drive is overdriven by .76. This enables you to run a 3:55
ratio rear end for aq good jump from the curb and then in 4th gear the rpm
will drop substantially so you don't have that 3800 RPM
motor buzzing your ear. Your car will run closer to 2000 RPM. Much better.
Finally, there are more new things coming out all the time for the Muncies,
just ask.

very truly

Sanity in Arizona Emissions Testing?

Arizona H. B. 2045 would exempt all vehicles 20 years old and older from
the emissions inspection program. The exemption is rolling, which means
that for every year that passes, another model year of vehicles is exempted
from emissions tests. For instance, January 1, 2003, all 1983-model year
vehicles will no longer be required to be tested. H. B. 2045 has been
assigned to the Arizona House Committee on the Environment.

Could it really happen?

<< I need HELP. Some of you have posted stories about buying a car "sight
unseen". I have the opposite problem. The person that bought my car put
it on a lift. Looked under the car. Drove the car and said how much he
knew about this model car. He said that he had owned over 20 of them. He
drove the car home (about 2800 miles). Now he is unhappy and is talking
about shipping the car back to me. I don't know what to do.
tschmidt@fuse.net >>
Tim,
I would not take it back. If the guy came and looked at it and even put it
on
a lift before he purchased it, then you owe him nothing. Especially if he
drove it 2800 miles home, without a problem! Any private sale is considered

an 'as is' sale. There is no warranty. I sold a 55' a year ago to a guy and

on his way home the alternator went. He wanted me to give him his money
back.
I sent him the money to replace the alternator and that was it. By law, I
didn't even have to do that! So, if I were you, I would tell the guy
"Sorry,
but the sale was final." If he insists on getting his money back, tell him
that you want $3.00 a mile for the use of the car. That is also legal.

Hi Bob, I often wondered about this. I have asked my bank tellers,
etc, etc, about this and NONE thought this was very important, except ONE
teller at my bank! Was wondering if one should also shred his bank
statements
we receive from the bank every month to balance out??? I normally just
through them in the trash, but after watching a few things on TV about this
&
now hearing it from you, I am convinced NOT to just throw them in your
trash!
Thanks for the GREAT advice! Richard

Editor's note. I recommend you shred anything that has your bank account
number on it after you are done
with it. You will spend many hours and a lot of money to get your credit
repaired if someone steals your identity.

this matter.

Tim, Just a reply & MY opinion of your controversy regarding the car

you sold! If you indeed informed the buyer of all major defects, and/or
problems with the car, & did not mis-inform him with descriptions,
mechanical
needs, body cond, RUST, etc, etc, in any way, then I don't feel he has a
legitimate gripe & should not attempt to return your car, BUT...........on

the other hand, if he WAS mis-informed about any of these things, then I
feel
he DOES have a legitimate gripe & you should be obligated to take the car

Online Auction or Snow Job?
Dear Bob (Editor)
While "the CC list" welcomes op. eds, I do not see too many members writing
them, so I feel a little apprehensive submitting one, but perhaps some
readers will confer. I have a 57 BA 2dr ht I have owned since Sept. 4th
1980. Today the car is restored to all original, save for the muncie
4-speed - a personal necessity. With all else done I wondered what else can
I do? I decided to collect and install all the options I can find (as I can
afford them). I am finding many of these options online at auction sites. I
like the online format because there is usually a picture of the item, and
online payment options.
Over the last couple of years, I have come to notice a few things. One is
- what used to be a rare and hard to find part, is now readily available on
the Internet, and prices are coming down. However, there are a few sellers
out there who think their stuff is somehow worth several times more than
everyone else. I don't know if they are greedy, or just living under a
rock. I don't fault a guy for trying to make a buck, but do I marvel at
some of these folks seeking to retire off the sale of a single 56 cigarette
lighter. There is always a few auctions where the seller is completely
ridiculous with their pricing. I often wonder how they reflect on the fact
that they didn't sell that super rare wonderful item they thought they had.
I've also noticed that some folks advertising 55-57 chevy parts via
online auctions have no idea whether the part is Chevy, Dodge, or Ford,
when it was made and what it does, but they certainly promote it like your
car doesn't measure up without it. Too often, sellers try to align their
misfit part as 55-57 original, when they are not. Recently, I bought a 57
compass listed as an original. When I got it, it was a reproduction. And,
as I write this, there is a compass at auction already up over $350, and
incorrectly listed as a 57 chevy compass. It is a chevy product, and it
looks much like a 57 chevy compass. However, the typeface on the
directional wheel is different than an original. There is also a 50 chevy
hood ornament listed as a 57 hood ornament. While there are typically 3 to
4 ornaments on a stock 57 hood, (depending on the engine), not one of them
is individually defined as a 57 "hood ornament." If one ordered a hood
ornament for a 56, he would expect to receive a 56 hoodbird, not a chrome
V. If one ordered a hood ornament for a 57, you would wonder exactly what
he wanted. A hood V? A Chevrolet script? A hood rocket? He certainly
wouldn't want one from a 50 chevy. This particular seller put such a
matter-of-fact 57 chevy sales pitch on it, I emailed him. I told him he
would have a better chance reaching a buyer if he listed the part as a 50
chevy emblem... and not a 57.
I saw a 59 chevy tissue dispenser listed as a 57, certainly everyone
knows they all look the same anyway right? Out of curiosity, I emailed this
guy and asked him why his 57 tissue dispenser looked different than any
other I've seen. He wrote back and explained that they made two different
kinds for the 57. The common plain-faced, and the super-deluxe... which was
very rare; and of course his was the super-deluxe rare one. Either he did
not know is that his tissue box was so rare in 1957 that no one ever saw
one until 1959, or he was a very determined con-artist.
I think half the fun of having " the fever" for old cars, is learning
to recognize the parts on sight, or being able to spot the rear end of a
classic sticking out of a grove of trees half a mile away. I am more
trusting of people who advertise in places like this forum. Anyone and
everyone can advertise in an online auction service, including folks who
have no idea what they are selling, but in this forum you have to have a
genuine interest just to be on the list. This forum helps to weed out the
jokers with the 56 4-door nomad, the 55 with the factory 327, and my
favorite, the 57 Belair with aluminum 1/4 panels inserts and no stainless
around the windows. There are many good things the web is doing in our
lives, but occasionally, a snake-oil-salesman comes our way.
With online auctions know what your looking for, ask lots of very direct
questions before you bid, repeat your questions if you get back vague
replies, ask for more photos if necessary, and if you still are not
completely satisfied, don't bid. Keep looking, and another auction with the
same part will come up before you know it. You can always resell the item
online if you need to, but if you get cheated, it's harder to resell and
break even.
A final tip: Recently someone stole the garnish moulding off my drivers
door. I had a real hard time finding another at traditional places. So I
looked at people selling 57 items online and simply emailed several people
and asked them if they had one. Within a day I found a complete set for
only $25, and the check was in the mail the next day. So never be too shy
to impose a little if you have an urgent need for a part to get you back on
the road to the next rod run, show, or cruise.
Thanks for the space Bob, keep up the good work.

Bill, I too could not find good original wheels for my 1955 Chevrolet. The

Cameo pickup uses Bel Air full wheel covers retained by small bumps on the
inner surface of the outer rim. When getting new P235/75 R15 tires (
Coker
wide whites, $165/each) I bought new 15 X 7 rally style (oval slot) wheels,

$40/each painted or $42 chromed. My original wheel covers will not work
but
some aftermarket "smoothies" resembling 1953 Bel Air covers look pretty
good.
The 7" wide wheel definitely feels better with the big tires. Check out
