Hi Bob and fellow list members,
I have a question about harmonic balancers. I have a 350 with the 8"
balancer on it. This large balancer doesn't clear the stock front mount
brackets. Can a smaller balancer that will clear be used or am I stuck
using
the 8" one and going to side mounts?
Thanks

To all of those folks that have inquired about the Muncie Overdrive
Gearsets. I
am told by the manufacturer that these new gearsets will not be in
inventory
until either September or October of this year. The 6 gear gearset is
expected
to retail for about $700.00
I will kept you informed. Also the initial run is expected to be a short
run of
gears, which means first come, first serve. Should someone have to have one
of
these gearsets, my advise to prepay the order. The money will go directly
to
the manufacture and be refunded should something occur and the run of gears
is
not made. This is a very reputable American Company that has been around
since
WWII.

Dear Bob,

In the list dated April 4th, "louis" mentions the rather unique (weird if
you
prefer) English Morgan and mentions its' use of a frame made of English
Ash.
I don't think so.

It has been many years since I worked on a Morgan! They are truly weird,
with
features such as the sliding pillar front suspension, but I think the
intended reference to English Ash is that the BODY FRAMEWORK - not the
vehicle frame - uses this material. Chevys, and many other cars as well,
used
wood body framework prior to the mid-1930's but Morgan is about the only
passenger car mfr. still building any new car bodies with this construction

today (at least that I am aware of). Even Morgan has built some coupes with

fibreglass bodies, but these are just about unknown in the US. I hope this
clears up any mis-impressions.

I've got a few large '55 chevy parts that I'd like to get rid of. This is
what I'm including, but you must come to pick them up: drivers' side front

inner fender, front half of driver's side quarter panel for a four door
(from
door jamb back to just in front of the gas door), four door front seat, and
a
pair of four door sedan rear doors (complete including accessory
ventshades).
$20 takes it all. I also have lots of trim pieces for '55-'57 Chevys
(mostly all four door). I'm located just north of Reading, PA.

The Story behind my 57 Belair
As a pre-teen, I had a passion for building models, particularly the
20's-30's
vintage. I enjoyed the hobby which lead to reading car magazines where I
learned a greater passion for old cars. I specifically remember the first
time
I acknowledged the existence of the 57 Chevy. I am sure I had seen one
before,
but had never really "noticed" one.
I was about 12 years old, reading a car mag while laying in bed. I
turned
the page and there was the picture of a 57 Chevy. I looked it over, and at
first thought it was quite ugly. After several nights of flipping through
my
magazine, this car kept popping back up, and I remember studying the
picture to
confirm my opinion - this car was ugly. As I stared, suddenly my whole
perspective took a 180 degree turn. This car is beautiful. Wow! And cool!
Not
only did it become my favorite car, I was determined to own one. In all
fairness, I have since tried staring at a 57 Ford, but I always go away
thinking, "still ugly". (I think it's the headlights. They remind me of
those
fat little goldfish with the big popped-out buggy eyes).
First I talked to dad... on and off over the next 4 years about getting
a 57
chevy. Dad finally made me a generous offer. Get straight A's through
high school and I'll buy you the restored 57 of your choice. Tempting, but
it
required a level of servitude, and lacked the chance to build my own. So I
mowed lawns, saved money - and car hunted. I hunted for years, scouring
over
occasional ads in the paper and drooling with envy whenever a 57 drove by.
Our town McCall, is a small mountain tourist town of 2000 people in the
central Idaho mountains. One morning before school (at my parents cafe) I
was
eye balling a 57 ad in the paper - that was far beyond my reach financially
and
geographically. I pointed the ad out to a local who was sitting next to me.
"
I'm gonna own one of these someday." I said.
"57 eh"? he replied. "There used to be a 57 sitting out on the ol Barkel
Ranch for years, probably still there." I interrogated the man for every
bit of
information I could get out of him. Right after school, I was trespassing
all
over the Barkel Ranch, though there were no signs forbidding it.
After quite a search I began thinking the car was no longer there. Then
a
flash of stainless steel caught my eye from a grove of trees, bushes and
weeds.
I could make out the shape of a car in the brush. I moved in closer and saw
a
tail fin through the brush. The car was a 57 BA 2dr htp., and in very good
condition over-all. It had factory door panels, the dash was perfect and
intact... but the radio was gone. I lifted the hood - the motor and tranny
was
gone. However, I found the block and several parts in the trunk a few
minutes
later. The car had no serious rust (score!). The paint was mostly faded
down to
primer, and thickly coated with pine sap because of the trees. The only
real
negative point were the 65 mustang bucket seats welded to the floor.
I rushed home to tell dad I had found a 57. He was leaving town for two
weeks
and said he would look at it when he got back. While he was gone, I located
the
rancher. Turned out his daughter owned it . I called her and she only
wanted
$600.00 for the car, and oddly enough, that is how much I had saved in my
account. I bought the car while dad was gone. I figured the worst he would
do
is make me sell it. When dad came home he was not very happy, and I knew he
wouldn't be. His main concern was, we owned a business and lived on site.
He
did not want a junk heap sitting around for customers to look at... "we're
not
Sanford & Son," he said. He reasoned that I had never worked on a car and I
had
no tools, and no where to work on it. So I cleaned out his garage and made
room. He really didn't like that idea either, but suffered my
determination.
Dad was worried I would tear the car apart, loose interest, and leave it
in
a pile of parts. I set out to prove him wrong, and worked on the car
everyday
after school. I bought the car in September and winter was closing in.
There
was no heat in the garage, but I kept working. I had no idea what I was
doing.
I just had one goal, take everything apart, clean it up, paint it, oil it,
etc., make it work, make it look new, and stick it back together. My first
project was the under carriage. I sanded down the whole under-carriage with
a
wire brush on a drill, down to bear metal. The drill helped keep my hands
warm
in the cold. Then I completely treated the bare metal with naval jelly,
washing
it off by hand and drying with a rag. When this was done, I used heat lamps
to
apply the undercoating in sections.
Next, I towed the car to my high school shop class and worked on the
engine
compartment, and cut those mustang seats out with a torch. Some of the guys
laughed at me and made fun of my 57. One kid (George) who came from a
wealthy
family told me my car was junk, and I would never get it running, that the
best
I would ever hope for is to push it around town. George had a 57 BA 4 door
post
at home, that his dad had professionally built, and it had a 350w/blower in
it.
Funny thing was, George never got to drive it anywhere. I told him, "Your
car
may have the best of everything, but its still a 4 door post." (Young men
want
to be cool. Trying to be cool in a 4-door at age16 typically has the
opposite
effect. Ever see Elvis or James Dean cruising around in a 4 dr post?
Besides,
bad-mouthing another guys ride, no matter what it is, isn't very cool
either.)
After six months of steady work, and keeping my grades up, dad came out
to
the garage. He told me he was proud of me for not giving up and working so
diligently on this car. He said he could see that I was serious and that he
wanted to help me. (Besides, dad understood. He has a 53 MGTD he restored
back
in 1960. The car looked all stock, but has a vette 327 hiding under the
hood.)
For my upcoming birthday he was going to buy me a motor and a
transmission.
Then hire a professional mechanic to teach me how to rebuild the motor,
install
it and make sure everything on the car was working and driveable. By
spring,
which is typically May in this area, the car was running like a champ, but
it
was still showing different colors of paint and primer.
I was driving around with my friend Mike, who had a 56 BA 2dr we had
been
working on. He suggested we paint my car all one color. So we stopped at
the
hardware store and bought $18 worth (several cans) of primer & black spray
paint. We went to my house, removed all the trim, primered the car, sanded
a
little and painted it all black. As amateur as the job was, with all the
trim
back on, it looked better all one color. I drove it all through highschool
like
that. When I graduated, my folks had it painted and upholstered for
graduation.
It was midnight blue with light blue/silver flames. I showed it at the
Winston
Car Show in Boise for 2 years as an everyday driver. I never won anything,
and
that's fine, just being there was award enough for me.
4 years later I wrecked it and tore the passenger fender off. I let it
sit
for several years. I could not find any desire to work on it. Then, spring
1998, Mike called and said, "sell me your 57". Then he said, "Now you tell
me,
how long have you owned that car, compared to how long you have driven it".
That was all it took to motivate me back into action. I decided to fix it
up
all original. I tore it all apart again, replaced the fender, got
everything
back in shape, sent it in and had it repainted the original
Harbour/Larkspur
Blue combo. The car still has the upholstery I had installed for
graduation, but
this spring it will come out and be replaced with original (repro) colors
and
material. Today, I baby my 57 quite a bit, but I still drive it everyday in
the
summer. (Too much snow and ice up here in the winter to chance someone
sliding
into it) I respect owners who go all out and restore cars better than new,
and
then trailer them around. I think it is an important part of this hobby to
preserve and protect some of the cars for everyone to enjoy seeing at shows
and
such, but it's something I could never do, even if I could afford to. After
all, how long have you owned that car compared to how long you have driven
it?!
I'm making up for lost time. When I am too old or too unhealthy to drive,
then
maybe I'll have it restored to a condition where I can just stand around
and
look at it.
I hope some of the other members of this list will send in their stories
about their car. I've cut out a lot of details in this story to shorten it
up
as much as possible.
I used to belong to a national club, but one of the reasons I lost
interest
was the shift from member & car-club emphasis to more of a business
emphasis. I
do not criticise them for the changes, it may have been quite necessary to
survive, and they still provide many valuable services. However, I like to
hear
and read other 55-57 chevy owner's stories. Realistic stories about
everyday
people, not the fluff you read about in the car mags. You read car mags,
and
the story is always written like everyone has an extra $200,000 dollars
laying
around to send their car to the magic house of engines for the $30,000
dollar
special, and then to the magic house of paint and bondo for extensive body
work
and 10,000 coats of hand rubbed lacquer... on and on it goes. I enjoy
stories
about everyday folks building in their garage, as they can afford to. It
offers
a wealth of untapped inspiration, and motivation for this hobby. I
encourage
others to tell thiers. So please send in your story!

P.S.
Dear Bob,
Last issue of the list, I made some comments about certain folks who list
anything and everything as 55-57 Chevy, in order to sell it online. Well I
have
finally seen an online auction ad that surpasses all ads... are you ready
for
this? What 57 chevy will ever be complete or fully restored without that
"Extremely Rare FACTORY 57 Chevy Coleman Cook Stove and Lantern"!!!!!!!?
You heard me right! I seen it online at auction! Fits right in the
trunk
too! Its Real Slick! Now all I need to complete my car is the factory 57
tent,
sleeping bags w/ silver buttons, cooler full o' 57 chevy beer, and the ever
sought after, fuel-injected bamboo fly-rod w/bowtie flies! Yeeeee Haaaa!
I'm
droolin' with envy! HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!

Hi Bob,

I just wanted to reply to Richard about Tim Schmidt's sold car.
Here's a guy that says he has had 20 or more cars of this certain model,
puts the car up on a lift to inspect it, drives it, likes it, buys
it, drives it 2800 miles, then decides he doesen't want it. Sounds
like a bunch of "you know what" to me. I'm sorry, but I think 99.9
% of the people on this list would agree with Warrens view. "Tim, you

Bob,
As always, "Thanks" so much for the list. We
can't possibly tell you enough how much we appreciate
your efforts.
I am very interested in (and fearful of) identity
theft. I have a waste can in my home office, and when
it fills up, it goes right out to the "burn barrel."
Here in New Mexico, our Social Security number is not
our Driver's License number, which I feel is good.
Every time you write a check or use your Debit or
Credit Card, many people have access to your account
numbers. At my bank, when depositing or cashing
checks I have received, I am required to write my
account number on the endorsement line. I'm
wondering, how can we ever have the security we
desire?

This is about getting a wiper motor for a '56 Chevy.

Someone asked me recently where to get one. I thought I'd heard or read
that J. C. Whitney has replacement motors that work for '55-57 Chevys. Is
this true? What length of shaft? Do you have to order replacement arms
and blades, too?

Thanks, Jim Wheeler, Tucson, Arizona 56Chevrolet@msn.com
----------------
Hi Jim-
I wouldn't recommend that route. To many headaches adapting the universal
J.C. Whitney unit to fit. Why not try locating a rebuilt unit, since they
really aren't all that rare? There is a couple in the Santa Maria, CA, area
who restore them and sell them at the Pomona Swap Meet. I'm sure they can
be located thru the Bow Tie Chevy Association or CCI. They drive a big red
'57 Chevy School Bus, that's hard to miss!

You also could try an ad in HEMMING'S MOTOR NEWS. There maybe some for sale
already listed there. Or a classic Chevy parts supplier that is listed
might be able to help you.

Try to stick with the stock set-up. Properly maintained, it will last a
lifetime. Good luck! -Jerry:>)

How many of you have a customized 55-57 and how many of you have a

Im just wondering if I am in the minority here with a customized 56

Also- IS there anyone else on the list from my area in MA/NH?
