Dear Bob: Regarding Wanda...
I read last issue's note where Wanda found a ton of money legally hers,
thanks to the notice sent out by Bob in this list. I find two points here
to be notable.
1. No endeavor that serves others, regardless of magnitude, is ever a waste
of time.
2. "Who'd-a-thunk" a tiny little text based forum feeding the insatiable
appetite of those who break out in a cold sweat, get weak in the knees, and
drool uncontrollably in the presence of a 55-57 chevy, would balance the
scales of justice in the unjust events of someone s life?

Hats off to Bob, and applause to Wanda. Or if I may suggest the nickname,
"Wandarella"!

If Wanda is reading... with all respect ma'am, the thought occurred to
me... what if your ex did not forget to take your name off those documents?
Is it possible the old coot left them there in lieu of an apology, whereas
knowing words alone would be too little too late? Maybe his trophy wife
turned out not to be the trophy he thought she was. All the outer beauty in
the world cannot compensate for an ugly soul. Therein may be an additional
treasure in your final victory, though rightfully, you are much more
qualified to judge the matter. Regardless, congratulations to you. Now be
sure to run right out and treat yourself to the finest 57 chevy convertible
money can buy, and a matching 57 corvette. They can be quite therapeutic...
er... uh... well so I've heard.

Hi Chevy lovers. Just wanted to know if anyone out there ever heard or saw
or
knows if the 1955 Chevrolet had a speaker switch on the dash board on the
right side of the radio in about the same position as the lighter. Was this

an option??? Thanks for your help and thoughts . jimmy

Bob recently I was in a bind for some NOS front end parts. I got a hold of
a guy who owns a company in Canada called Bay Ridge Classics. Not only did
he have the parts I needed and went way out of his normal schedule to ship
them to me when I got them the cost was way below everyone else because of
the money difference here and Canada.
If you want more info on this guy let me know and I will get his card
and write his business info for you and anyone else that wants it
This is my favorite site, Thank you

Tony, I also have a 1955 chev. The best investment that I ever made was
to purchase the twin books 1955-57 chevs from Classic Chev out of Florida.
Everything is in these books that you would ever need to know about working
on your car when it comes to how to! Pictures with step by step
instructions along with part numbers and availability. The articles take
you
from the beginning as in your case learning about maximum tire size on your
car and how to measure AND UNDERSTAND IT!
So far at the rear springs go to the Internet and look up Eaton
spring.
They made our original springs for these cars and have the replacements.
They are carried by Danchuck out of California, Classic Chev Orlando
Florida
as well as numerous companies.
Tony, I'll share a big secret with you. I just started buying 55 parts
from a company in Canada called BayRidge Classics. The guy that owns the
company is a real prince and goes out of his way to help you,..........and
here is the best part, because of the money exchange the parts are cheaper
in Canada.

I took my 57 Chevy Bel Air into a local transmission shop to get an Idea of
what it would take to repair some leaking. The car sits after being driven,
and loses about a pint. He said it looks like the seal where the
transmission bolts to the engine might be gone, and if that is the problem
and he has to remove it he'll go through the tranny and replace all the
seals (not a rebuild). He said it might cost a $1,000. Does that seem like
a
reasonable price?

Editor's note. If the transmission is a Powerglide, there may be a fix
that is much cheaper. CCI and Bowtie have a kit that may solve your
problem of "burping transmissions". I think the kit sells for less than
$50 dollars. I suggest before you pull the tranny cover and clean the
filter (screen) to be sure it is not clogged.

Even if you need new seals, $1000 seems much to high a price to me. The
seals kit cost about $200 for the parts.

About AB 1058:
New Coalition Blasts Assembly Bill 1058 As Open-Ended Attack on California
Consumers

Measure Gives Broad Authority to Air Board; Possible Huge New Vehicle Fees,
Tax on Driving, 50-cent Gas Tax Hike
A new coalition of taxpayers, organized labor, motorists, large and small
businesses, agriculture and others branded Assembly Bill 1058 (Pavley) as
an open-ended attack on California consumers.

In a statewide radio and print advertising campaign starting April 23, the
coalition declares that AB 1058 is a vague, extreme measure that would give
broad new powers to the California Air Resources Board (CARB) to reduce
carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from vehicle exhaust. CO2, an inert gas that
humans exhale, trees and plants absorb to produce oxygen, and does not
contribute to air pollution, is considered a contributor to global warming.

The bill already has come under fire for failing to specify how CARB would
accomplish this goal, particularly since no practical, affordable
technology exists that would eliminate CO2 from vehicle exhaust

"AB 1058 lets CARB develop sweeping programs that could dramatically
increase the cost of purchasing and driving vehicles in California," said
Allan Zaremberg, president of the California Chamber of Commerce. "It would
limit consumer choice by significantly increasing the cost of the larger,
more powerful vehicles they want to buy and force all drivers to pay much
more in the form of gas taxes and mileage fees."

CARB has already suggested some of these alternatives in a joint report
with the California Energy Commission. The report, issued in March,
specifically lists several strategies to reduce fuel consumption and
emissions like CO2. These included:

. Another 50-cent-per-gallon increase in gasoline taxes.

. A two-cent tax on every mile driven for all passenger vehicles.

. Extra fees of $3,500 on minivans, light duty trucks, and sport utility
vehicles to discourage consumers from buying them.

. Reducing the speed limit to 55 miles per hour.

"AB 1058 is an open-ended blank check that would empower the Air Resources
Board to decide what vehicle products we can offer our customers," said
Avery Greene, a Honda/Buick/GMC Truck dealer from Vallejo and President of
the 1,400-member California Motor Car Dealers Association. "Our customers
will not like it because it will limit their freedom of choice and increase
prices for models they prefer to own and drive."

Larry McCarthy, President of the California Taxpayers Association added
that, "this measure is threatening to California taxpayers because it
empowers a state agency to become an strong advocate of substantial tax
increases. This bill will have a major negative impact on California's
economy, taxpayers and consumers."

The coalition advertising campaign against AB 1058 encourages concerned
Californians to communicate their opposition to their state elected
officials by calling a toll-free telephone number, 1-800-988-2588, or
1-800-988-2587 for Spanish-speaking callers. A Website, www.wedrive.org,
also has been established to help people contact their elected officials.

The Coalition Against AB 1058 is growing by the day. It presently includes
the California Chamber of Commerce, the United Auto Workers, the California
Manufacturers and Technology Association, the Alliance of Automobile
Manufacturers, the California Motor Car Dealer Association, the California
Building Industry Association, the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association,
the California Farm Bureau Federation, the Specialty Vehicle Market
Association, the California Highway Users Conference, and the California
Taxpayers Association.

Facts About AB 1058
. AB 1058, sponsored by Assembly woman Fran Pavley is a vague piece of
legislation sponsored by an environmental group called the Bluewater
Network.

. AB 1058 would require the California Air Resources Board (CARB) to create
regulations to achieve the "maximum feasible, cost-effective reduction of
greenhouse gases" emitted by cars and light trucks in California. Carbon
dioxide is an inert gas that occurs naturally in the atmosphere, is exhaled
by humans, is absorbed by trees and plants to produce oxygen and does not
contribute to air pollution. It does not contribute to smog. Carbon dioxide
is not regulated under the federal or state Clean Air Act, and no state
government in the United States regulates carbon dioxide.

. There is no catalyst or bolt-on device that would remove carbon dioxide
from vehicle tailpipes, so the only "maximum feasible" action CARB could
recommend would be to reduce the size of vehicles or reduce the number of
miles driven in California.

. AB1058 provides no detail as to how CARB would achieve maximum
reductions, but a March, 2002, staff report from CARB and the California
Energy Commission provides extensive details on the various options for
reducing carbon dioxide that are being considered actively, including
raising fees and taxes on sport utility vehicles, pickup trucks and
minivans in an attempt to discourage consumers from purchasing those
vehicles. The report also suggests imposing a tax of two cents for every
vehicle mile traveled.

. AB 1058 would require CARB to plan and implement a mammoth, costly new
bureaucratic "command and control program" that will have minimal actual
impact on controlling the issue it purports to address global warming.
Global warming is a global issue.

. Actions taken by the state of California will have no real affect on
reducing carbon dioxide emissions worldwide. CARB meanwhile faces the very
serious issue of bringing vast parts of the state into compliance with the
Clean Air Act. If CARB is forced to overhaul its air standards program to
include carbon dioxide, CARB's resources and time will be diverted from
meeting the real problem - air pollution, which has a significant impact on
the health of Californians.

. AB 1058 is a threat to California's struggling economy. No one knows how
high costs could go to fund this new program, or what the real impact on
new regulations would be to taxpayers or consumers.

Since I have several replies to the last list and no one answered
the guy about the Z-28 wheels, here is my experience. I tried some 16"
IROC wheels on my 55 that has the original design disc brake kit from CCCI
on Chevelle hubs and they didn't work. I don't remember why they didn't or

what year they were, so I don't know if they would work on original hubs.
To Lenny: It must be a regional thing. Here in Kansas we have
very few original cars, especially fully restored ones. Most of them are
modified or custom. The people in our club prefer cruises and rod
runs. We are about the only ones who go to points type shows, and we have
a custom. We have also noticed a difference in the predominate colors in
different areas of the country.
To Cruzr: You can use a smaller balancer, depending on how
modified the motor is, but it would be best to have the crank assembly
checked for balance with it. If it upsets the balance too much, you will
have more vibration and reduced bearing life. I'd go the side mount
route. They provide more engine stability and would be cheaper than having

an already assembled motor balanced.
To Woody: The national club got more of a business emphasis
because it is a business! (Notice they dropped the "club" from the name
and made it CCI.) Have you checked out the Bow Tie Chevy Association
(http://www.LateGreatChevy.com) ? It has to have some business aspects to

survive (such as combining operations with our sister organizations for
shows and the magazine), but it tries to be as member-sensitive as it
can. It was formed in response to what the other club had become. A
little history: Doug Moorhead sold CCCI. The new owners thought they were

getting a parts business and magazine, and were a bit surprised to find out

that people expected it to be a club. They didn't even own Classics. The
main owner tried to relate to us (in his expensive 3 piece suit!) by
talking about his old truck in a welcome meeting speech at the Pleasanton
convention when they needed to do some PR in 1992 to stop the hemorrhage of

members leaving and the threat that the new Bow Tie organization presented
to them. I only saw him (giving essentially the same speech at the awards
banquet) at one other convention before I quit going in the mid 90's. His
main business is boats. They fired Denny Williams over philosophical
differences. He was trying to do things for the members, but the
"bean-counters" usually won out. Wendell Snowden resigned. Several state
associates approached them about starting a new organization that would
take things back more the way they were since they had the expertise to do
it. They joined with their friend, Danny Howell at Late Great Chevys, to
have the financial backing and facilities to form Bow Tie. At what was
supposed to have been the CCCI international convention in Springfield that

year (1992), they presented their proposal to see if there was enough
interest. They also got input on what we wanted in an organization. A lot

of people became charter members at that show. The majority of the state
associates resigned from CCI to become Bow Tie Associates. Wendell
resigned several years ago.
We try to make everybody feel welcome and welcome suggestions on

what will do that. We have a 100 pt class called the Governor's class for
driven cars where the undercarriage and trunk aren't judged as well as the
1000 pt show car judging. We try to make our events family friendly with
fun events like cruises and picnics. Did you know we are having our
International Convention in Vancouver, BC August 12-15? The other
organization copied a lot of our ideas to stay competitive, which has made
things better for the members of that group.
We were asked to be the Kansas Associates 2 years ago, and were
named Members of the Year in 1998. We enjoy the hobby so much we have made

it to every one of their conventions so far, even though we have the kind
of car you are talking about. Until we repainted it, we probably had less
than $10,000 in it. At it's best it just barely got a bronze certificate
back in the '80s and in recent years it didn't even get noticed at local
shows with its faded paint. We showed it in Governor's class. We would do

usually one major project a year, and by the time we got it "done" it was
time to start over with new paint and interior. Two years ago we went
without some of the trim and interior after getting it painted. A lot of
the people in Bow Tie are "everyday people", including the owners. Many of

us have blue collar jobs. A lot of us have done as much work as we can
ourselves, not only to save money, but because we like to know what is done

to our car and enjoy the feeling of accomplishment that comes from doing it

ourselves. Another member of the year, who also shows in the Governor's
class, came in primer several years. We go for the friends and fellowship
we have in the hobby, including the Bow Tie owners. Danny often calls our
conventions a reunion. These organizations value things like friendship,
loyalty, integrity, a willingness to help and other "family values" more
than the bottom line (as long as it stays out of the red!). We have
written several articles for the magazine about the sightseeing trips we
have taken when we went to conventions.
We got our '55 2 door sedan as a trade in 1989. The neighbor kid
kept pestering me to sell him my '67 Nova SS. I told him I would trade for

a '55, thinking that would get him off my back. A few weeks later, he came

over and asked me to come look at a '55 he'd found. It was acceptable, and

he paid $600 for it (so those prices in the list could still be found
around here then). I drove it to work for 2 years the way it was. During
that time all I did was replace the generator and battery and fix the
radiator. We decided to fix the rust and have it painted turquoise and
ivory enamel in 1981. We joined CCCI that year and the Midwest regional
was in Wichita. So we took the car without the interior done since it was
just a few miles away and we figured it might be the only show we ever got
to. (Little did we know...) We showed it in Modified. We enjoyed it so
much, we started going every year. In 1985, we put a cheaply rebuilt motor

in it and branched out to the Western regional in Arizona. We've been
traveling ever since, adding more shows as my vacation time
increased. We've put over 100,000 miles on it since 1985 and have had it
in all of the lower 48 states except Rhode Island and 4 Canadian
provinces. We have really seen the USA in our Chevrolet. We have had a
lot of fun with it, seen a lot of sights, and met a lot of people instead
of having a "trailer queen". The nice thing about ours is that we can
enjoy it. When it needed a transmission overhaul and parts were getting
hard to find, we decided to go custom and do what we wanted. Over the
years we have moved the battery to the trunk, put in a turbo 400, rear
shock mount bar, 12 bolt posi rear, power disc brakes, front anti-sway bar,

MSD ignition with adjustable advance and magnetic pulse
distributor, Projection fuel injection, air conditioning, fuel cell,
tranny oil cooler, Griffen radiator, and cruise control, along with
several motors. We finally did it right and put in a completely rebuilt
mild performance 350 a few years ago. I say "we" because I am blessed with

a wife who is willing to work alongside me on these projects. She knows
more about the car than a lot of men do! Two years ago we had it painted a

green teal and white polyurethane base coat-clear coat that has green and
blue pearl as well as small silver metal flake. It gets more notice
now. The project for this year is carpet and door panels.
We are looking forward to another trip to Canada, as well as the

Bow Tie shows in Nashville and Tulsa. Say hello if you see us at one.
