I will be giving a class on Retirement Planning/Financial Planning/Estate
Planning to the Los
Angeles Classic Chevy Club at their next meeting on Sunday, June 9, 2002.
The meeting will be
held at the Cimarron Cafe 5160 West 190th street in Torrance. The cross
streets are Inglewood
Avenue and 190th Street. Thomas Guide 763 B3. The cafe is on the South
side of the street in a
small strip mall. I invite you to come to that meeting and say hello. I
would like to meet as many
of you as can attend. The meeting starts at 4PM and the class will begin
after the meeting.
Please bring your TriFive. You will meet some very nice people and see
some very nice cars.

I know you will find the class interesting and informative. There has been
some recent changes in
California law that can save you and/or your heirs many thousands of
dollars in taxes that you
should know about. I will stay as long as necessary to answer all of your
questions about the
above subjects. I will have a lot of information to pass out to you in
written form. I hope you
will bring your spouse and children to the meetings as these subjects are
important to both you
and your spouse and your children.

If you are not a member of the Los Angeles Classic Chevy Club, would you
please send an e-mail
to it's president, Jerry Mull, with a note to say you are coming. It would
help Jerry plan for the
amount of people that will attend. Jerry's e-mail address is
JMull@Sprintmail.com

If you are not in a car club, I think you will find the Los Angeles Classic
Chevy Club is one that
you might consider joining. The people are very friendly and they welcome
new members.

Greetings, Bob and fellow Tri-Five lovers,

After a year of 'trials and tribulations,' -- to say nothing of
'frustration'
-- I finally traded my lovely '48 Buick, along with cash, for a '55 Chevy
Bel-Air. Overall, the car is in excellent shape, but as I have had time to
look it over the in the past month, little things begin to stick out.

Since I anticipate taking the Chevy to my first CCI sanctioned show in
Waverly, TN on June 1, I was wondering what type of judging criteria I will

encounter? I understand that classics are either graded 1-6, or in the case

of sanctioned shows, are graded on 1,000 point system.

I'd appreciate a 'brief' overview of the 1,000 point grading system,
and--specifically--what 'deductions' are to be expected on the following:
replacement glass not bearing the coded numbers (the wing window on the
shotgun side has been replaced by plain glass with no number coding); were
the original 'grills' a combination of chrome and stainless or ALL chrome;
what deductions for paint chips, dings, and small blemishes on exterior;
painted nuts inside the engine compartment vs. chromed or normal nuts;
coating on the undercarriage, along with coating on the inside of the hood;
a
non functioning clock.

If I sound 'naive,' I can only plead 'guilty,' however, this is my first
real
experience showing a classic Chevy. I don't know the point system or what
to
watch out for, nor do I know the different plateaus (i.e., is anything over
a
certain number respectable?). How is a car categorized? Does driving the
car
to an even vs. trailoring the car, make a difference? (Note: I bought this
car to drive and enjoy, so I do plan on driving to the competition). Is it
a
'Junior' entry until it hits a certain point level?

Any 'pointers' would be gratefully appreciated. Have a great week, one and
all.

Regards,

Fred Vail

PS Is anyone out there going to the Waverly, TN show on June 1. Call if you

wish.
PPS Is anyone out there heading to Indy for the "500" next weekend, or do
you
live in Indy and show your Tri-Five? I'll be there on Saturday and Sunday.

Hey all!:

I have been on the Bob Ford email list since 1999, and some of you may
recall my plan to build a unique '57 by swapping the entire body and
interior to a '95 Impala SS chassis. That project is underway, and I am
encouraged that it is turning out not to be as difficult as I had imagined.
Things are lining up pretty well so far!

Originally, I wanted to thoroughly modernize my Classic's chassis by
adapting disc brakes, power steering (605), fully upgraded suspension, etc.
to my '57 2-door sedan, and bought all the new parts needed to do the
conversion a couple years ago. Now that I have changed my plans (the full
body swap), I no longer need the brakes kit, suspension components and
power
steering setup. Note that these particular parts are all designed to work
with Heidt's Hot Rod Shop's 2" dropped spindles, which are also part of the
package (everything is brand new in the box). I will make a fellow Classic
enthusiast a deal that is better than he/she is likely to find anywhere
else
on all the parts.

If you want to go this route with your '55-'57, drop me an email and we'll
talk about what is included here. I have a pretty good chunk invested (not
including all the shipping, some sales tax, etc. I paid to get them), and
can send a complete itemized list to anyone who wants to see all that is in
this deal (e.g., spindles, brakes, master cylinder and booster, rear leaf
springs, front coils, 605 box and lines, .

I DO NOT mean to be competing with any of the fine vendors who are on Bob's
list, and only have this single complete bumper-to-bumper upgrade package
to
offer. I am hoping there is someone else out there who wants to bring a
Classic up to modern mechanical standards, and will trust that I shopped
all
this stuff hard before laying out my cash. I will be able to pass on the
savings to you, and provide it all in one neat package.

Bob,
Does anyone know how to replace the antennae on the front fender of a 55
without removing the fender.
Thanks, Graeme
55 Sport Coupe
>>>>>>>>>>
Hi Graeme-
I'm assuming you have the stock type antenna on your '55?

It's extremely easy (Believe it or not, I'm working from memory on this):
1) Compress the antenna down to it's minimum height. Some Antennas will
collapse down to about 6" high. Remove the black plastic cone-shaped "nut"
on the Antenna Shaft (turn counter-clockwise; it's threaded). Underneath,
will be a large flat nut. Remove it and the tear-drop shaped Chrome Base
will come off. Underneath are two screws that hold a plate on. Remove them
and any rubber seals.

2) Remove the passenger side kick panel. That will require removing the
Vent cover screws. On original cars the Vent Cover is riveted to the kick
panel. After those screws are removed, it & the kick panel should slip out.
At about half way down the Antenna Shaft Tube, you'll see a right angle
metal tab that is fastened to the cowl area with a Phillips screw, as I
recall. Remove it.

3) Assuming you aren't changing the Radio to Antenna coax, just un-thread
the antenna lead at the Antenna (on the side of the antenna shaft). Or if
you are replacing the coax cable too, just unplug it from the back of the
Radio. With the antenna closed down at it's minimum height position, the
whole assembly should slip down, and come out into the interior of the car.
THE ANTENNA ASSEMBLY DOES NOT COME OUT THRU THE TOPSIDE OF THE FENDER. The
bracket behind the kick panel and the right angle coax connector on the
antenna, won't let it.

Hope this helps. For original drawings of this, pickup a copy of the '55
CHEVROLET ACCESSORIES INSTALLATION MANUAL from CCI, Bow Tie Chevys, Danchuk
or another supplier. Great book to have on hand for these types of
questions. While you're at it, also pickup a copy of the '55 CHEVROLET
ASSEMBLY MANUAL. A tremendous help in working on these cars and saves a lot
of frustration.

Graeme,
You can access the antenna by removing the interior cardboard kick
panel
(which is held on by the screws in the vent grille). After removing all

of the retaining hardware on the outside on top of the fender (plastic and
metal nuts and chrome teardrop trim), go inside and disconnect the antenna
cable. The antenna is secured by a metal strap behind the kick
panel. Remove it and the antenna can then be pulled down and out from
inside the car. Glenn

I realize this is akin to blasphemy on this site but I told a friend of
mine I would check. She is looking to buy her husband a 1959 Ford
convertible. I asked what model and she either didn't care or didn't have a
particular one in mind. She lives in Fallbrook (So. Cal) CA. She says it is
ok if it is a project car, which to her means still drivable, but would
like to get one as nice as possible. She didn't give me a spending price.
Don't know if that is good or bad. I told her the best Ford she could get
him was a Chevy but I guess he had a Ford when they met. This is supposed
to be a surprise anniversary gift. If anyone has any information I would
appreciate it so I can pass it on.

This is a scary but not surprising piece of legislation that has the
potential to affect all of us. If passed in California, the "Bluewater
Network" or some equivalent will try to pass similar bills in other
states. Perhaps they'll become emboldened enough to try taking
the issue to Congress. If the automobile were really that much of
an environmental hazard, maybe the enviro-nazis would have a
point. But today's cars are approximately 99% cleaner than 1960...
and thanks to advances in gasolines and lubricants, even the
classics we love run cleaner today than 40 years ago.

AB1058 underscores a longtime conviction I've had: The importance of
every car nut to become educated on environmental issues. For example:
"global warming", which looks like the reason for this proposed bill.
We hear a one-sided argument repeatedly from the news media,
reporting on "global warming" as if it were as certain as the
sunrise. Proposed "solutions" threaten much more than just our
hobby: they threaten our very way of life.

But in reality...there is much dispute in the scientific community.
Many climate experts and scientists vehemently disagree with
the "conventional wisdom" we now see in our newspapers and on
our TV sets. NASA temperature records actually show a slight
cooling in the atmosphere over the past 18 years. Two excellent
websites to learn the truth are...
www.globalwarming.org and www.junkscience.com . Please arm
yourself with the facts, stay aware, and write your legislators.
Talk to your friends and fellow car nuts...because it DOES affect
our hobby. AB1058 is just the latest proof.

One final point: what did we all learn about carbon dioxide in
school? The plant life eats it and in turn produces oxygen. Yes,
carbon dioxide is PLANT FOOD. Can someone explain how
plant food can be a "greenhouse gas" that harms the
environment?

My '57 Handyman and '68 Fleetside truck, your classics, and
the future of our nation hang in the balance. And as our founding
fathers said, eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.

About AB 1058:
New Coalition Blasts Assembly Bill 1058 As Open-Ended Attack on California
Consumers

Measure Gives Broad Authority to Air Board; Possible Huge New Vehicle Fees,
Tax on Driving, 50-cent Gas Tax Hike
A new coalition of taxpayers, organized labor, motorists, large and small
businesses, agriculture and others branded Assembly Bill 1058 (Pavley) as
an open-ended attack on California consumers.

In a statewide radio and print advertising campaign starting April 23, the
coalition declares that AB 1058 is a vague, extreme measure that would give
broad new powers to the California Air Resources Board (CARB) to reduce
carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from vehicle exhaust. CO2, an inert gas that
humans exhale, trees and plants absorb to produce oxygen, and does not
contribute to air pollution, is considered a contributor to global warming.

The bill already has come under fire for failing to specify how CARB would
accomplish this goal, particularly since no practical, affordable
technology exists that would eliminate CO2 from vehicle exhaust

"AB 1058 lets CARB develop sweeping programs that could dramatically
increase the cost of purchasing and driving vehicles in California," said
Allan Zaremberg, president of the California Chamber of Commerce. "It would
limit consumer choice by significantly increasing the cost of the larger,
more powerful vehicles they want to buy and force all drivers to pay much
more in the form of gas taxes and mileage fees."

CARB has already suggested some of these alternatives in a joint report
with the California Energy Commission. The report, issued in March,
specifically lists several strategies to reduce fuel consumption and
emissions like CO2. These included:

. Another 50-cent-per-gallon increase in gasoline taxes.

. A two-cent tax on every mile driven for all passenger vehicles.

. Extra fees of $3,500 on minivans, light duty trucks, and sport utility
vehicles to discourage consumers from buying them.

. Reducing the speed limit to 55 miles per hour.

"AB 1058 is an open-ended blank check that would empower the Air Resources
Board to decide what vehicle products we can offer our customers," said
Avery Greene, a Honda/Buick/GMC Truck dealer from Vallejo and President of
the 1,400-member California Motor Ca
r Dealers Association. "Our customers
will not like it because it will limit their freedom of choice and increase
prices for models they prefer to own and drive."

Larry McCarthy, President of the California Taxpayers Association added
that, "this measure is threatening to California taxpayers because it
empowers a state agency to become an strong advocate of substantial tax
increases. This bill will have a major negative impact on California's
economy, taxpayers and consumers."

The coalition advertising campaign against AB 1058 encourages concerned
Californians to communicate their opposition to their state elected
officials by calling a toll-free telephone number, 1-800-988-2588, or
1-800-988-2587 for Spanish-speaking callers. A Website, www.wedrive.org,
also has been established to help people contact their elected officials.

The Coalition Against AB 1058 is growing by the day. It presently includes
the California Chamber of Commerce, the United Auto Workers, the California
Manufacturers and Technology Association, the Alliance of Automobile
Manufacturers, the California Motor Car Dealer Association, the California
Building Industry Association, the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association,
the California Farm Bureau Federation, the Specialty Vehicle Market
Association, the California Highway Users Conference, and the California
Taxpayers Association.

Facts About AB 1058
. AB 1058, sponsored by Assembly woman Fran Pavley is a vague piece of
legislation sponsored by an environmental group called the Bluewater
Network.

. AB 1058 would require the California Air Resources Board (CARB) to create
regulations to achieve the "maximum feasible, cost-effective reduction of
greenhouse gases" emitted by cars and light trucks in California. Carbon
dioxide is an inert gas that occurs naturally in the atmosphere, is exhaled
by humans, is absorbed by trees and plants to produce oxygen and does not
contribute to air pollution. It does not contribute to smog. Carbon dioxide
is not regulated under the federal or state Clean Air Act, and no state
government in the United States regulates carbon dioxide.

. There is no catalyst or bolt-on device that would remove carbon dioxide
from vehicle tailpipes, so the only "maximum feasible" action CARB could
recommend would be to reduce the size of vehicles or reduce the number of
miles driven in California.

. AB1058 provides no detail as to how CARB would achieve maximum
reductions, but a March, 2002, staff report from CARB and the California
Energy Commission provides extensive details on the various options for
reducing carbon dioxide that are being considered actively, including
raising fees and taxes on sport utility vehicles, pickup trucks and
minivans in an attempt to discourage consumers from purchasing those
vehicles. The report also suggests imposing a tax of two cents for every
vehicle mile traveled.

. AB 1058 would require CARB to plan and implement a mammoth, costly new
bureaucratic "command and control program" that will have minimal actual
impact on controlling the issue it purports to address global warming.
Global warming is a global issue.

. Actions taken by the state of California will have no real affect on
reducing carbon dioxide emissions worldwide. CARB meanwhile faces the very
serious issue of bringing vast parts of the state into compliance with the
Clean Air Act. If CARB is forced to overhaul its air standards program to
include carbon dioxide, CARB's resources and time will be diverted from
meeting the real problem - air pollution, which has a significant impact on
the health of Californians.

. AB 1058 is a threat to California's struggling economy. No one knows how
high costs could go to fund this new program, or what the real impact on
new regulations would be to taxpayers or consumers.
