Hi, Bob,

Well, ever since buying the '55, I've had nothing but questions. Another
one:
I have heard about changing out the steering to what they call 'poor man's
power steering.' It has to do with ball bearing vs. rubber. Does anyone
know
what I'm talking about and any suggestions?

Thanks,
Fred Vail/Nashville, TN

Editor's note. Danchuck has that kit for less than $100. It is just
bearings that replace the bushings in the idler arm.

Thanks, Bob. Your message is a good one, but I would add, Purchase the
auto-updates feature for your anti-virus software! It's cheap (I believe I

pay about $5/year to Symentec - Norton), and it downloads the new virus
definitions almost daily. Unless you keep your definition list up to date,

you are still vulnerable.

I am finally nearing the stage of my restoration where I can begin to think
about putting paint on metal.

Can any list member recommend a good paint shop in the New Jersey, eastern
Pennsylvania area?

All of the metal work has been completed and all that would be required is
a
little light bondo and a decent paint job.

Any help would be appreciated.

G,Day, Bob, I thought everyone remembered the Big Bopper went down with
Buddy Holley in that tragic crash. Chantilly lace, at a guess it may refer
to a woman s lace head hair piece , as in 'Chantilly lace & a pretty face
etc" as the song went. lace throw over hair pieces's woven from cotton were
all the rage back in the good old days, along with those good lookin' gals
of cause.!! Take care. John

Hey, im a virgin to ur list. i just joined and just bought my first classic
chevy, a 55 belair 2dr. i almost bought one when i was a kid 20 years ago
now i have full-filled my dream. gotta question for yall. when i bought it
it just had a new wiring harness installed. well the ignition switch
stopped
working and appeared to be burnt out. replaced it AND EVERYTHING WORKED
FINE
UNTIL I WENT OUT THE NEXT DAY TO START IT AND THE BATTERY WAS DEAD. i
jumped
it and went and bought a new battery cause i didnt know how old the other
one was. well the next day i go to start the chevy and the new battery is
dead as a door nail. i jump it and it starts right up. im decent with
electrical work and im guessing i have a open circuit somewhere and its
draining my battery dead. the wiring of the old chevy seems pretty simple
so
i was looking for suggestions on to where to start first and to see if
anyone had expierenced the same problem. thanks. Tom from Charlotte NC

Editor's note. Try this. With the key off and all your switches in the off
position. Disconnect the positive battery cable. Connect a wire from the
positive battery post to a 12 volt bulb. Connect the bulb to the battery
cable you jut disconnected. The bulb should NOT light. If it does, that
means current is flowing and you have a short to ground.

HI all:

UPdate to my tranny problem. My Turbo 400 tranny in my 56 Belair is spweing
out fluid from vent tube.NOT a good sign. I was told that it MAY be the
torque converter being too 'stronge' as it was used with my 454 Big BLock
in
racing- any thoughts? I am replacing the torque converter ASAP but if this
doesnt work , I have a 700R4 to install and want feedback -if anyone else
out there is crazy enough to do such a thing.

thanks

Hey Bob

I think you have been in that California sun too long. I have sold TVs at
Walmart for years and
none of the TVs we sell has a tube in them. They stopped making TVs with
tubes many years
ago. I bet you get a lot of mail telling you that you were wrong about TV
sets having tubes.

John

Editor's note. I checked with the Walmart in Orange California recently
and all of the TV sets
they were selling had a tube in them. You must work in a very high class
Walmart. TV sets that
don't have any tubes are very expensive here in California. Here is the
way you can tell if a TV
set has a tube. Turn it on and if you have to wait a few seconds to see a
picture, most likely the
set has a tube and you are waiting for the filament to get hot. I will
concede that most TV sets
today only have 1 tube.

Bob,
You are right. Big Bopper did die in a plane crash, along with Buddy Holly
and Richie Valenz.
A note to Rick Oster; In 1964, my parents visited the grave of John F.
Kennedy, who was assassinated in 1963, 3 years after he was elected
President. I was only 7 when JFK was shot, but remember it very clearly.
But
I remember 1964 even more clearly, for that was the year my mom died of
cancer, 3 months after she went to Washington, DC.
To Lenny; If you have a turbo 400, most likely the driveshaft in
your
car now was shortened. A stock 55' driveshaft will work with most trannys,
except the longtail 400.

Greetings, Bob,

Looking specifically for a '55 "Wonderbar" radio. Wish to maintain
'original'
status of this car. Prices seem to be in the $500 category, several for
less.
I've had 'waiting' time quoted as high as four and a half months. Can't
believe that. Will most likely leave 'mono,' no rear speaker--don't want to

mess with rear package shelf.

Also, looking for old 'ads' for the '55. Hopefully, a two door hardtop.
Full
page ads from Saturday Evening Post, Collier's, and such.

Finally, does anyone have accurate 'production' figures for the '55 Bel Air

Sport Coup? Also, the MSRP, along with any price list on various options?
Thanks.

Hi Bob:
Always glad to receive your posts. Much information to be gathered and
learned.

To Jack who is looking for weather-stripping for his 55 Nomad, I've found
T&N
products to be the best. Corners are crisp, cross section size is correct
and
the attaching clips work. Many vendors of quality tri five parts will carry

these products.

Bob, Yes, The big bopper was killed in the same plane crash as Buddy
Holly.
Also with them was Richie Vallens, And the pilot. As Don Mclean sang, It
was
the day the music died. Do you know who lost the coin toss and gave up his
seat in the plane?

The best door weather strip available is T&N rubber. I have all body
styles
in stock. They do not make it for the 56-57 4 door hardtop. I have that in

Greetings, Bob, and Wanda,

You are 100% correct as to the Ben Colder/Sheb Wooley & J.P Richardson/"Big

Bopper" monikers. They are both one and the same.

As to "Chantilly Lace," well, any 'baby boomer' knows that 'she had a pony
tail hangin' down, with a wiggle in her walk and giggle in her talk, that
made the world go round, round, round.......there ain't nothing in the
world
like a big eyed girl to make me act so funny, make me spend my money, make
me
feel real loose, like a long necked goose, like 'oh, baby, that's what I
like."

"Chantilly Lace," the hit song written by Richardson, was the third most
requested single of 1958, and forever identified with "The Big Bopper." As
to
'chantilly lace,' the fabric, it is an elaborate, floral mesh lace,
outlined
in silk, and often used in lingerie and wedding dresses.

But, hey, the other translation, by Richardson, makes a much more
interesting
description! We've all known more than a few women in our lives who made us

act so funny, made us spend our money!!

On February 3, 1959, en route from Clear Lake, Iowa--where they had just
played the Surf Ballroom--to Moorhead City, Jiles Perry (J.P.) Richardson,
a
28 year old DJ from Beaumont, TX, Richie Valens, 17, (of "Donna" and "La
Bamba" fame), along with, perhaps, the single most creative musical mind of

the 50s, Buddy Holly, 22, were killed when the private plane Holly had
chartered, went down in a snow storm eight miles from the Mason City, Iowa
airport. As Don McLean would later lament in his mega hit, "American Pie,"
it
was truly "the day the music died."

Ironically, I remember the night vividly. I was listening to my transistor
radio under my bed covers, (hoping that my parents wouldn't hear me), when
news of the tragedy broke in the early morning hours. When I awoke, I could

not recall if I'd dreamed of the accident, or if it really had happened.
The
Sacramento Union morning paper confirmed my worst nightmare.

As always, it's great to get your newsletter and correspond with so many
enthusiastic Tri-Five Chevy fans.

Have a great week, one and all!

Bob,
Wild Bill was partially correct and Sandy Pierce was correct, but to cover
the '57 engines a little further. The 245HP 2x4 and the 250HP FI engines
were hydraulic lifter engines and the 270HP and 283HP cars were solid
lifter
engines

You were correct. The Big Bopper (J.P. Richardson) was killed in a plane
crash along with Buddy Holly and Ricardo Valenzuela (sp) (Richie Valens) of
LaBamba and Donna fame.

Chantilly lace is a delicate silk or linen bobbin lace in black or white.

Still enjoy your list but what happened to your web site. I used to enjoy
looking at list member's cars (especially mine) but can't find them
anymore.

Hi Bob,

Big Bopper was killed in the same plane crash as Buddy Holly and also
Richie Valens. Crash occurred on Feb 3 1959 outside Clear Lake Iowa.

The date of 3rd February 1959 is remembered there as "The Day the Music
Died". The name of the small plane was "American Pie"
which became the title of Don McClean's tribute song to these rock n
roll stars.

Anyone old enough to remember these?

The 1957 Packard looked almost exactly like what other 1957 car?

In 1963 Chrysler built 50 cars that they thought might be the next
generations of cars. They gave these cars to people to drive for 3 months
to test them. They were never produced. Anyone know what was so unusual
about these cars.
