Bob, thank you for the warning about the Klez virus. (You may remember
that
I'm the Mac user who wrote to you advocating Mac as a virus-resistant
platform). I plan to pass along your warning to my PC friends who have not

yet been hit by Klez. Sadly, most everyone I know has already been
infected.
Apparently Klez made it's rounds faster than the anti-virus companies could

upgrade to defend against it.

It does appear, however, that Klez is not a truly nasty bug that destroys
hard drives, etc. Just makes a nuisance of itself.

Although my chances of catching a virus are slim, they do exist and I try
to
be prudent. I'm wary of attachments although I do open them if they are
from
someone I know. I don't open .exe files even though I can't catch the
virus;
I worry that I could become a carrier and spread the virus anyway. Common
sense tells me I would have to catch it first, but I don't know. Do you
know?

If the recipients software allows, it should be set so that .exe files do
not
automatically execute. This seems to be one of the reasons so many people
succomb to viruses.

Whenever I send an attachment, I either precede it with an email to let the

recipient know that an attachment is coming and what it will be, or I
accompany the attachment with an explanatory email, whichever seems the
most
appropriate. I never send an attachment "cold" with no explanation of what

it is and why I am sending it.

You may not want to post this: it could spark another Mac vs. Windows
debate. However, these suggestions (common courtesy and common sense, I
think) may be something you could mention to your readers.

Thank you again, for keeping us on our toes.

Jan

Editor's note. Jan, thanks for your e-mail. I think most of us can agree
that our computer is vital to our business. Data backups are serious
business and we should all do them on a regular schedule. I also suggest
you keep your data backup in a fire proof safe or off site. Ask yourself
this simple question, "If I lost all of the data on my computer, what would
it cost me in money and time to recover?" I also back up important files
such as names and addresses on PAPER. This is the ultimate backup. If
necessary, it would be a lot of work but I could create these files from
scratch.

If you have an anti virus program, please do updates EACH WEEK. You want
the most protection possible.

If I receive an attachment "cold", the e-mail is automatically deleted
without being read. I have Compuserve set to NEVER send an attachment.
If you ever get anything from my e-mail address with an attachment, DELETE
IT WITHOUT OPENING IT. It is a fake.

Thanks again for the list, Bob. I am seeking input from members of our
list regarding differential modifications to my 55 sedan.I want to mount 11

inch or wider tires on American racing wheels.I plan to use 16 inch
diameter
wheels.I plan on using a Ford rearend shortened to the appropriate length
to
facilitate changing the tires without deflating the tires or soaping the
wheel opening lip. I have already relocated the leaf spring mounts from
outside the frame rails and into frame pockets.I recall my stock rearend is

approximately 60 inches from hub face to hub face.I need to know what the
appropriate overall length of the shortened Ford unit should be to
accomplish
my aforementioned goals. If a member has experience in this operation I
would
appreciate some good advice so I could perform this modification with a
minimum of waste. Thanx, Nick

In 1963 Chrysler came out with a rotary (I believe) power plant.... It
could burn anything (almost) for fuel.... A friend of mine that was a
traveling sales rep at the time was one of the lucky people to test
drive one of these..... It was kind of hard starting when cold but once
under way it ran quite well.... His worst complaint was every where he
went he was mobbed by people wanting to see the new generation of
automobile.... He was glad to turn the car back in so that he could
finally get some work done..... Submitted by Dave Durchenwald

Good evening, Bob. Nice to get a list to read tonight. I really need some
good information or email address for some one out there that might have a
pair of NOS lower qtr mouldings for a 57 2dr hardtop. I would buy a real
nice pair of ordinals if they are close to perfect. I bought a pair of
reproductions and pulled them back off. They do not look the same as
ordinals and I layed one of my ordinals over the top of the repo and there
is a difference. Has any one else done this? Mine come from Danchunck. Bob,
do you have any connections for NOS parts? If any one else could help. sure
would be appreciated. Roger in Iowa

Editor's note. I suggest an ad in Old Cars and Hemmings for parts wanted.

HI Bob,
Just wanted to say thanks for your time and effort you put into your site.
I have enjoyed it for a few years now. I also want to say thanks for
sending us a heads up on any message from you with an attachment. I
received one today with the subject being "response" . Not to worry I
deleted it immediately. with no harm done. It seems I receive one with an
attachment from someone about once a day.I have learned to never open one
with an exe.file attached.

Greetings, Bob, and fellow "Chevy List" readers,

While the loss of Buddy Holly, J.P. Richardson (The Big Bopper) and Richie
Valens was a major tragedy for the families involved, and the entire world,

it does have a lighter side.

There have been numerous stories about those who gave up their seats on
that
fateful night, including most notably, the late, great Waylon Jennings and
guitarist Tommy Alsup. I heard this one-liner some time back:

"If all the folks who said they had given up their seat on Buddy's plane
that
night, had actually given up their seat, it would have had to been a Boeing

"747" and not a Cessina 172!"

Regards,

Fred Vail
Nashville, TN

Editor's note. As a former pilot who has flown a 172, I can tell you that
it requires a very high level of skill to fly it in bad weather.

Will be on the Newport Coast during the week of August 8 and following. I
am from the Bay Area. Are there any car shows, swap meets, etc, during
those August days? I am willing to drive north or south for an hour in
either direction.Appreciate your information- Rick

Editor's note. Rick, send me your fax number if you have one or send me
your address. I will send you a copy of the appropriate pages from
"Automotive Calendar of Events". Great publication for California car
events.

For people that know about that publication, here is a story about a
Southern Calif Car Club that wanted free publicity for their show a few
years ago. They sent the editor an announcement about their show that had
EVERY WORD in the announcement spelled wrong. This worked. The editor
had/has a thing about words spelled incorrectly and really blasted the car
club for their announcement. The car club show had the largest attendance
in their history.

This is kind of like the old joke "What is weether?" A bad spell of
weather. <G>

Dear Bob,

Two comments for your great list: first, with respect to your question on
"Hash" - the term is often used by AMC and Hudson enthusiasts to describe
the
Hudson models built in '55, '56 & '57 (which really utilized the big Nash
and
the smaller Rambler and Metropolitan body shells - and are not considered
"true" Hudsons by the faithful!). Secondly, some have commented a bit
erroneously in replying re your earlier question about the '57 Packard. The

'57 Packard models looked a lot like the '57 Studebaker President since
they
used the same basic body shell. Some commented about the '57 Packard
looking
like a Studebaker Hawk. This is incorrect, but it is very understandable as

to why the mistake was made. For the '58 model year, S-P continued the
President-based Packard models (sedan & station wagon), but also introduced
a
Packard Hawk. It is this '58 model, of course, which looks a lot like the
Stude Hawk (with which it shares the body shell).

Enough on Brand X, now! Wishing you the best.

Coker Tire in TN. They should run somewhere around $125.00 each.

I can appreciate your good humor over the Hudson/Nash joke, but really The
Hudson was light years ahead of the lowly Nash.

Since I do not know your age Bob, It would be difficult to know if you grew
up in the Hudson era like I did. They were fun cars. With the hydraulic
clutch, they would burn rubber in all gears. And my oh my have you ever
been in the back seat of one of those 1950 Hudsons. It is no trouble to get
horizontal back there and it helps if you have a girl friend. But
seriously, between the Hudson and the 1950 Oldsmobile they more or less
dominated the race tracks that year.
We still see one or two real nice restored Hudsons at most of the
carshows in this area throughout the year. By the way, keep up the great
work with the list. I look forward to it regularly.

Bob,
I was stationed at Richards-Gebaur AFB which is located near Belton and
Grandview, MO in 1964 and 1965. Hickman Mills was a neighboring town at
that
time period. Richards-Gebaur was known as Harry S. Truman's personal
airport.

Klasicjon

Editor's note. I think I heard that Richard Gebaur AFB is gone. Anyone in
that area know?
I was a teenager when I lived there and I had a girl friend in Belton. As
Gary said above, Hudsons and Nashes were popular with teenagers for obvious
reasons.

It was hard for people to believe that a 6 cylinder Hudson could keep up
with a V8 but it did.

Dear Dave,
I bought my wide white wall tires from Coker Tire.
It took me a few days to get them, but when they came
they were a pleasing quality radial, with a good clean look.
The telephone salesman was extremely helpful and kind.
The cost of the tires were around $160 each plus shipping.
This is my honest first time dealing with Coker Tire.
I recommend them with confidence. Their website is: www.cokertire.com .

Also another company I see that looks reputable is
Diamond Back Classics.
I have never dealt with them, but their ads are impressive.

I recommend Cliff with confidence too.

I am having a problem finding someone who knows what
Scavenger pipes are never mind were to buy them. I
have two 55 Chevy's, a convertible and a hard top
which will be a hot rod. In the 60's around here
(Rhode Island) I remember a lot of cars with Scavenger
pipes and I want that look for my 55 Hard Top. If my
memory is still good they were Chrome straight pipes
with a flare on the end, about 4 or 5 feet long
hanging under the rear of the car. Does anyone
remember them and where I can buy some? Did they go
over the exhaust pipe or attach to them?

Bob,

Thanks for the great list. The 57 210, four door we (Santa Barbara
Police Department) bought from a contact on the list is has been
converted to a classic black and white police car.

I was hoping you would be able to inform the list members of a car show
that SBPD is hosting along with the Santa Barbara office of the
California Highway Patrol on September 21st, 2002. The proceeds benefit
the Showgrounds Foundation for charities and the SBPD and CHP Explorer
posts.
The show will be in Santa Barbara at Earl Warren Showgrounds and will be
open to all vehicles. We are inviting all law enforcement agencies with
classic, custom or unique police (or fire) vehicles. Anyone who would
like a registration form may contact me via e-mail or at 805-897-2335 or
CHP Officer Mark D"Arelli via e-mail at MD'Arelli@chp.ca.gov or
805-967-1234.

I have also been reading with interest the messages about the computer
virus and safety measures. I know the guys on the list get tired of
reading about the computer stuff but after all we do use computers to
read the list, don't we?

The information from Ron Foote was very good, however not the whole
solution. It may be OK to always close your browser after sending credit
card or other password information but users need to do more. Everyone
should be using a firewall to keep criminals from getting the
information through your connection. There are a lot of firewalls out
there on the market that will work well. The one I use and that was
recommended in the CA-DOJ Internet Crimes class I recently attended is
from ZoneLabs. I am not endorsing ZoneLabs everyone will need to decided
which works best for their own use. But the product should have similar
properties.

Thanks

Tony Ballestrin

Editor's note. Great information Tony. I also recommend that if you have
DSL, you turn your computer off when you are not using it AND you install a
firewall. Never store your social security number on your computer or any
credit card number.

Santa Barbra is a lovely town on the beach. Check out their unusual
downtown area. This will be a great show to attend. Lets support these
people who do so much for us.

Bob, I saw an interview with Waylon and he said that the most frequently
asked question he gets is about the plane seat. As I remember, during the
same interview, Waylon also said that Buddy told him he hoped Waylon got
stuck in a snow drift and his response was I hope your plane crashes.
Surely
Waylon regretted his words many times for many years. <Nick> 55 2dr. Sedan

Reply to the to questons:

#1) The Packard and Studebaker companies merged and except the names,
the cars were almost identical.

#2) Your question on the 50 cars produced by Chrysler, I would guess
to
be the Turbine Cars that I believe was a derivative of the Andy Granetelli
Indiannapolis 500 race car.

Hope I'm right? What do I win?

Answer to InBOIL on his difficult exhaust header problem. The best exhaust
header solutions I found was from a company located in South San Francisco,

California. Their name is Sanderson and can be reached on the net @
SandersonExhaust.com. I too had an unusual application with my
rack-n-pinion
in my 57 and they had a simple solution. These are very good grade headers
with thick flanges and if you want to go the extra distance/expense, they
also sell the copper gaskets that all but eliminate leaks. Good luck.

Vern, I found your name on the internet listed as the Pres of Tri-Valley
Classic Chevy club in San Francisco. I hope you can help. I am a member
of Classic Chevy International. I live in South Florida (Boca Raton), and
have exhausted all my East Coast options as I search in vain for (2)inner
fenders for my 57 Chevy. My questions are these:
1) Where can I find super clean used inner fenders
2) If they do not exist, who sells the best fitting after market inner
fenders.
3) Is there a parts supplier out West that could serve as a go to for
used items?
You are officially the only person I now know the name of in California.
Hope you can help. (By the way, I am putting a Ramjet 502 in my 1957 and
will be happy to forward you some pics for a little direction).

They were powered by a gas turbine. The Peterson museum has/had one on
display. All the cars were supposed to be sent back to Italy where they
were
made at the end of the three months since Chrysler didn't pay the import
duty.
Apparently all the bodies were hand made and so none of the body parts
would
