On a typical carburetor what adjustments should you expect to make when
changing elevation? I have an Edelbrock and might be going through some
mountain passes and then down to sea level.

* One dragster's 500-inch Hemi makes more horsepower than the first 8 rows
at Daytona.
* Under full throttle, a dragster engine consumes 1 1/2 gallons of nitro
per second, the same rate of fuel consumption as a fully loaded 747 but
with 4 times the energy release per volume.
* The supercharger takes more power to drive then a stock hemi makes.
* With nearly 3000 CFM of air being rammed in by the supercharger on
overdrive, the fuel mixture is compressed into nearly-solid form before
ignition. Cylinders run on the verge of hydraulic lock.
* Dual magnetos apply 44 amps to each spark plug. This is equivalent to the
output of an arc welder in each cylinder.
* At stoichiometric (exact) 1.7:1 air/fuel mixture (for nitro), the flame
front of nitro methane measures 7050 degrees F.
* Nitro methane burns yellow. The spectacular white flame seen above the
stacks at night is burning hydrogen, dissociated from atmospheric water
vapor by the searing exhaust gases.
* Spark plug electrodes are totally consumed during a pass. After 1/2 way,
the engine is dieseling from compression-plus the glow of exhaust valves at
1400 degrees F. The engine can only be shut down by cutting of it's fuel
flow.
* If spark momentarily fails early in the run, unburned nitro builds up in
those cylinders and then explodes with a force that can blow cylinder heads
off the block in pieces or blow the block in half.
* Dragsters twist the crank (torsionally) so far (20 degrees in the big end
of the track) that sometimes cam lobes are ground offset from front to rear
to re-phase the valve timing somewhere closer to synchronization with the
pistons.
* To exceed 300 mph in 4.5 seconds dragsters must accelerate at an average
of over 4G's. But in reaching 200 mph well before 1/2 track, launch
acceleration is closer to 8G's.
* Drivers shut off before the finish line, or even dual parachutes will not
stop the car.
* If all the equipment is paid off, the crew worked for free, and for once
NOTHING BLOWS UP, each run costs $1000.00 per second.
* Dragsters reach over 300 miles per hour before you have read this
sentence.

I usually gloss over the off topic posts, but the discussion over the TV
tubes caught my attention.

There seems to be some confusion over the termonology. As Bob pointed out,
the majority of televisions and computer monitors still use picture tubes
(Cathode Ray Tubes, or CRT's) This is the actual screen you are looking at,
which is a vaccume tube similar in concept, but much different in
construction than a electronic tube as most people think of them. Other
than the CRT, there are no other tubes in modern TV sets. And yes, most
modern CRT's have power applied to them at all times, keeping them "warm"
for quick turn on times. This is a relatively modern feature, which is why
older TV CRT's need time to warm up and display pictures.

The alternatives to CRT's are the LCD and the Plasma display, which are the
flat screens used on laptop computers and very high end televisions
(several thousands of dollars). These are the only types of televisions
with absolutely no vaccume tubes of any kind.

Now back to my tubless 56 chevy ....

The Beach Boys and their music is a topic that comes up regularly on the
list.

Last night I was lucky enough to see Brian Wilson play live in London. In
the wake of the much (overly?) documented stories of his years of excess
and
the very ill-at-ease appearance he made at the Jubilee celebrations here I
was, to be honest, a little wary.

My doubts were unfounded. He played for a joyous and emotional two and a
half hours, covered ground from Surfin' USA to the whole of Pet Sounds
through to Imagination. And it was great.

If you like his music and you get a chance to see the man - please go. You
won't be disappointed.

Thanks for the list Bob.

Chris Metropolus asked about any aftermarket front inner fenderwells
available for his '57 Chevy. At last year's Cool September Days (a great
charity car show at Lake Tahoe, Nevada) I saw a beautiful '55 Belair with
smoothed inner fenders which I learned from the owner were molded from
fiberglass. The manufacturer is a boat builder in Lake Havasu City, AZ,
named Steve Faller. His (other) business is "Shoebox Suspension," and I
have been pestering him on the phone for months to go into production of
the
'57 fenderwells. Maybe if we all dropped him a line we could convince him
there is a market for this item and encourage him to make the molds and
knock out a few pairs of these parts. I know I sure want a pair for my
'57!! Steve was very personable on the phone, and told me he would get to
building the '57 fenderwells as soon as he caught up in the shop. Want to
give him a call at (928) 453-5984?

Nick asked the best way to determine the overall width of a F**d rearend
swap into his Classic Chevy. Without knowing the offset of the wheels you
select, it is not possible to figure the best dimensions without actually
mocking up the setup. I would suggest that you locate some wheels that
match those you want to use (if you have not yet bought yours, as it
appeared from your message), mount up a pair of tires of the size you want
to run, then position them within the wheelwells of your Classic. If you
have already removed your stock rearend, this will be an easy task for you.
Otherwise, you can set the wheel/tire combos up on the garage floor
directly
behind your car and eyeball the clearance within the quarter panel wheel
opening lips. Then stretch a measuring tape between the mounting surfaces
of the two wheels and you will have your overall width dimension. Be
certain the inside sidewalls of the tires will also clear the inner sheet
metal (since you have moved your springs inboard, there should not be a
clearance problem with them) and any other potential obstacles in the
quarter panels. A trusted tire shop might be willing to help you with this
project. There is a nifty device they sometimes use by bolting it onto
your
hubs, setting the offset - both inside and out, and spinning it to check
all
clearances. If you can do this and account for the different width of the
modified rearend, you can get a good idea of the width you will need.

Good luck with your project!

Received @ HACCC web site - FYI - can anyone help them?

I am trying to find pictures of 55 Chevy pickups in the original colors of
Marine Blue and Cream. I have spent hours searching the Web to no avail. My
husband owns a 55 and we are looking at painting options for an original
type restoral. I saw these two colors somewhere a while ago, but have been
unable to find them again as they look on the truck. Can someone help us,
please?

I want to put a six speed out of a 97 Z-28 in my 55 Chevy. I know the
splines on the transmission are probably different but is there anything
else I am going to run into?

How do I defeat the 2nd gear lockout?

I'm currently running a 327 with Muncie M-21 trans. Is the bolt pattern of
the 6 speed the same as my bellhousing?

What about pilot bearing?

What about the drive shaft, is it to long?

What about the yoke, is it the same?

Thanks guys for a great job.

hi all!

had an idea......if you want to get your whitewalls nice and shiny try a
little white shoe polish. especially if they are scuffed up. or if you
want to make your whitewalls larger (if you have radials) try 'painting'
the black tire part with white shoe polish to make the whitewall larger.

also try that stuff they use to paint windows white in construction. or
for drag racers that put it on their windows.

Gabby- You are correct- Scavenger pipes were long and flared at the end.
They were attached to
a muffler, although they were still loud. The came from underneath the car
to the rear, but did not
exit. They hung anywhere from about mid point to just behind the rear
axile. You couldn't really
see them unless you looked under the car or your car had a high point.
Almost all auto part stores
had them in stock and the were very inexpensive- but then, gain, so were
most car items then-

Bob,
Here's a tip I learned from someone to prevent forwarding a virus to
anyone.
Insert a fictitious name in your email address book. Make sure the name
starts with the letter 'A', so it will be at the top of your list. This
way,
if the virus tries to send emails, it will be cut off by this false
address.
A message to Roger in Iowa - Your right, the repro moldings are a bit
different. The repro Belair inserts are even worse! The original inserts
had
a curve at rear end to follow the contour of the fin. The repros don't have

this, so a lot of times they will bow out or there will be a small space
between them and the body. And they cost over $500 for the set!!

In fact, I sold a very nice used set to a guy last year for $175. When
he
received them in the mail, he called me and wanted a refund because he said

they were 'bent'. When I explained to him why they were 'bent', he didn't
seem to believe me and said he still wanted his money back. So, I told him
to
ship them back and I would refund his money. Well, he must have checked
with
someone else, because I never got them back.

Bob,

The area of Hickman Mills is still called that but it is actually in the
city
limits of Kansas City. Kansas City is now in three counties and is about
360
square miles of area. A lot of driving is required to go thru this town!

Steve

Editor's note. Thank for the info Steve. I guess a lot has changed since
the 50s when I took Highway 71 to Troost Street as I drove downtown Kansas
City.

Bob,
Another way to distinguish real emails from bogus virus-spreading emails

is to look at the subject. I delete emails, even from addresses I
recognize,
if the subject is generic as 'info needed' or 'question for you' or 'RE:

what
the email is about in the subject heading.

Does anyone remember what the name of the company we used in he Fifties to
