Bob-

I have recently purchased a 56 chevy 210 post. The car is mostly stock,
except for the late 60's vintage chevy ralley wheels and a lowered front
stance. I am in the process of coordinating a motor and trans swap, which
will include a ZZ 350 crate motor and a 700R4 automatic. The current
engine
is a post 57 small block (not sure of the displacement), with heads that
have casting symbols that indicate they are from a 56 dual quad
application.
The transmission is a 3 spd manual with an electric overdrive. The car is
currently running and in great condition.

Please help me estimate the resale value of the heads and transmission.
Thanks for your input,

Hi Bob,

This is in reply to John's question about his 57 FI convertible. The "GC"
at the end of your engine's identification number means that it was
originally mated to a turboglide transmission, as you had been hoping
apparently. However, it also means that this engine was originally a four
barrel carb. motor and not FI. If it were an FI engine with turboglide, it
would say "GF." If it were an FI engine with powerglide, it would say
"FJ."
It sounds like someone bolted a Rochester FI unit on to a previously 4BC
motor. Hope this helps.

I wrote in about a week or so ago about narrowing a rearend for my
55
sedan. This past weekend I went to a swap meet and was told by a couple of
rodders that an economical alternative to narrowing a rearend would be
swapping in an S10 rear because they are somewhat narrower than the
original, and are 5 on 4 3/4" bolt pattern and at least as strong, and the
brake lines adapt easily and the park brake cable adapts easily, too. They
said posi units can be had relatively cheap, I'd just need to reposition
new
perches and possibly modify driveshaft length depending on which
transmission
I'm using. Said that even the U-joints will pose little or no problem. This

will allow use of 8" wide wheels, or even up to 9.5" wide wheels, since
I've
already moved my leaf springs from outside the framerails and into the
framerails with the spring pocket kit. (That was a time consuming job) Has
anyone had experience using an S10 rearend in a Classic? It sure seems like
a
good way to get 8" wide wheels to fit properly for about a weekend's worth
of
work and a few hundred bucks worth of parts. A custom narrowed rearend
setup
and ready to install starts at about $1500 and goes up of course as you
specify more expensive components be used. Thanks once again for any and
all
valuable input from the list membership. <Nick> And thanks again to Bob

To supplement the comments from Nita, I thought I might pass along a method
I have employed successfully about 10 times in the past 15 years to
purchase
a new car for me and others. I have never paid more than $200 above
wholesale invoice and its rather painless. First decide EVERYTHING about
what you want on the vehicle and look up the appropriate descriptions and
numbers of the model and options on-line (www.edmunds.com etc) or in the
newsstand publications. Prepare a fax sheet indicating you are in the
market immediately for a purchase and list exactly what you want-color,
options etc. Ask for a quote, including mark-up if any, over wholesale
invoice, plus delivery and any other fees, and any factory "cash-back"
incentives. Send this fax directly to the Fleet Manager at your local
dealers-at least 5 different ones-and wait for the good news by return call
or fax! Some will deal, some won't. If you don't get it within $200 or
less of invoice, keep shopping. Don't go near a salesman or else the Fleet
Manager can't deal with you. This is also best done near the end of the
month when sales quotas are approaching. It's that simple.

Bob and list members ....

I am posting this a second time, only because I have become somewhat
desperate.

I have moved to Raleigh, NC from Los Angeles, leaving behind my project 56
chevy 210 wagon. My intent was to have it shipped out here, but time and
finances are coming quickly to an end and it can not be shipped in its
current state. I really need to get rid of this car.

It is a 56 210 wagon. California car, built in Van Nuys, has minor rust on
rear doors and tail gate. The car was redone sometime in the 80's with tuck
and roll interior and an orange/white paint scheme (originally turquoise
and ivory). My intention was to restore it as a driver, not a show car, but
correct at least cosmetically. The project I was in the middle of when I
had to pick up and move was a front end rebuild (new bushings, power
brakes, power steering. I had media blasted and repainted the front frame
and firewall and began reassembly before I simply ran out of time. The car
was running when I began the project in January, but has not been started
since. It sits now in the garage of my old duplex, where my wife and kids
are until mid July. I have at least $4,000 in new parts including the
complete power brake and power steering kits from reputable dealers waiting
to be installed.

When I last posted this, I was looking for around $3000. At this point I
will take almost any offer. I need to get rid of this car. My landlord
would appreciate it if I didn't abandon this car in his garage. I will be
back in Los Angeles over the long July 4th weekend, if anyone is
interested. I may be reached by cell anytime between now and then at (310)
892-6265.

Bob, could you please post the e-mail address for the president of the LA
Classic Chevy Club again? He was a big help to me last time, and I had many
responses - I need to try one more time, but can't find his address! Thank
you.

Just got back from a trip to Ohio from Florida. You can tour the Corvette

interesting to see how Corvettes are made. As a bonus the Corvette Museum
is
located at the same exit off of I65. Plan on 2-3 hours for the factory tour
and
2 hours for the museum tour. Many of the people responsible for the 55 -57

3 men go into a motel. The desk clerk says a room is
$30, so each man pays $10 and they go to the room.

Awhile later, the desk clerk realizes that the room is
only $25, so he sends the bellboy to the 3 guys' room
with $5 change.

On the way to the room, the bellboy can't figure out
how to split $5 evenly between 3 men, so he gives each
man $1 and keeps the other $2 for himself.

This means that the 3 men each paid $9 for the room,
which is a total of $27. Add to that the $2 the bellboy
kept and the total is $29. Where is the other dollar?

First, someone asked about Ed Cole - and his going from President of "the
largest auto company in the world" to being president of the smallest. You
were right in that he went from President of GM to being President of
Checker. Readers should know that he left GM as he'd reached the mandatory
retirement age (for GM executives at that time) of 65. Still wanting a
challenge, he took on Checker. He was piloting his private plane in a storm

when he went down.

Secondly, about that "survey" on the subject of buying a car: surveys tend
to
be biased in that the way in which a question is asked has a lot to do with

the outcome of the survey. Personally, I doubt that the percentages of men
and
women reported REALLY want to pay whatever price is asked. If you really
want
a "no haggle" purchase, you can have it - from any dealership - right now.
Simply fork over whatever they ask!

Personally, I'll continue to negotiate whenever I purchase a major item
(automobile, truck, real estate, whatever). Certainly the dealer (who
completes more deals in a month than you will in your entire life) has the
advantage. But, you can improve your odds by deciding on what you're after
well in advance, and researching things thoroughly before you visit the
dealer.

As far as Saturn and their "take it or leave it attitude / policy", I'll
leave it thank-you. And, a number of others have been doing likewise
judging
from recent sales results.

Ed Cole was the chief engineer in charge of developing the original
Chevy smallblock. The team accomplished their task even though they were
rushed by a demanding time constraint. I am pretty sure he died in a plane
crash, and that an automotive analyst named David Cole is his son. I think
he
is a professor at Michigan State and I see him quoted fairly often in
newspaper reports about auto companies and auto factories. After Ed Cole's
assignment on the V8, he headed up the Corvair project. Carl asked about
auto
assembly factories that offer plant tours. GM often discontinue plant tours

for a short time during the summer when they are ramping up production of
new
models. GM has an annual 2 week shutdown of all American (and probably
Canadian) assembly plants for maintenance needs during the first 2 weeks of

July every year, therefore plant tours are obviously unavailable then. If
you're going to be in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, GM's finest facility is
located in Arlington, TX. You can call Plant Security to inquire about
availability of plant tours at 817.652.2200 Thanx for keeping our List

Bob,

Recently a group of us '55-6-7 Chevy guys attended a local Ford Picnic
(open to all cars) and a guy came up to me and insisted that he was
going to buy my '57 HT! Seems that he wanted a '57 when in high school
- but couldn't afford one. After he graduated there were the typical
distractions in life. He is now retired, his wife has cancer, he has
Parkinsons and they decided that it was now or never. He wanted a "57
Chevy to take back to North Dakota for his class reunion yep, he was
right - I sold him my '57. Hope that he enjoys the '57 as much as I have
and that he has a Great Trip.
This seemed like a good reminder to all - we shouldn't put off doing
important fun things in life until the end.

A friend has a 57 Pontiac thats available it's in real nice shape,
but needs front suspension work and I hoping to get some help from the
newsletter members as finding stuff for a Pontiac is definitely more
difficult than for the Chevys.
Does anyone know where I can find parts for the Pontiac?
Front suspension? Dropped spindles? Disk Brakes? Suspension
conversions? A/C conversion?
Thanks for any help you might be able to provide.

Bob, If I may respond to the writer who talked about the price of new cars
and how folks would pay more money to have a fixed price rather that having
to haggle with a salesman and his boss.
If I may relate this story about this subject. I had just retired in
1982 and took a job as a New car salesman for Marge's Chevrolet in
Cincinnati in 1982. (if you recall Marge later owned the Cincinnati Reds.
Yes she is nutty, she one time got into my lunch in the refrigerator and
ate part of it and then complained openly about the type of lunches that
were clogging up her refrigerator.)
Anyway, shortly after I started there she called a salesmeeting and
introduced a team of 4 men from California and told us that we would learn
the "California Sell system" This was at a time when interest rates were
very high and folks were concerned about their payment. Well this system
exploited that fear. We basically sold folks by the payment system. It is
too long to go into here but the idea was to get folks to commit to a
monthly payment. The payments could total as much as $10,000.00 over the
retail sticker. I would never have believed that people would go for this
in a million years. I personally sold a new Corvette to a psychiatrist M.
D. for almost that same figure. And later a young girl whose mother had
good credit and just wanted to get the deal done and go home.
Sure there were people who would not go for this but the majority of
these people wanted payment comfort at the expense of reality. Most of them
never realized they were signing for 6 or 7 years even though it was on the
paperwork. It sounds incredible but its true. The sales force all got fired
one day when my boss hired a salesman who happened to be black. Evidently
my boss knew that Marge was a Racist. Well she came into work one day and
saw this good looking black man seated in a salesman's seat and figured
things out real quick. But no one could have believed what occurred next.
Marge stood in the middle of the showroom floor and screamed, "Who hired
the f_____g n____r?" No one moved, everyone froze and she said it again.
When my boss said , "I hired Julian" , she said "You, into my office." We
were all history and nothing ever happened to her.
Now for the car side of this story. Marge had a fabulous collection of
corvettes and they were stored in the show room. First one there got to
pull them onto the back parking lot (not far enough back) aaand they were
pulled inside at night. It has been 20 years since but I recall about 6
Vettes, Big blocks with tri-power 427 I think , an Lt1 two convertibles,
all four speed cars.
And I'll just say this about pulling them outside. It is a shame what we
did to those cars with the motor aaaaand running gear cold, let your
imagination work for you.

Gary Howard

Editor's note. When I was in college in Springfield Missouri the late
50s, I had a part time job as a car salesman. As Gary said, in our
training they told us never to mention the price of the car. The only
number we could use was the payment. Strangely, this was the number most
people were interested in. They did not care what the price of the car was
or the interest rate. They taught us that the rare customer that would not
buy unless we told them the price, we should be prepared to loose. That
system worked fine until one day, a woman came in with one of the ads for a
car for sale that the dealer had in the paper for a price a lot less than
the dealer paid for the car. Of course the dealer never had a car for sale
at that price. The ad was just to get people in the showroom. We were
told to tell anyone wanting to buy that car that it had already been sold.

This woman came back several weeks wanting to buy the car that was in the
paper. Each week she was told the car had been sold. Then one week, she
came back with a man who demanded to see the manager immediately. The
manager was arrested for fraud and had handcuffs put on him and taken to
jail. I thought it was time for me to retire from selling cars.
