To John Strelis about air conditioning,

I installed a kit from Old Air Products in Texas in my 1955 BelAir.
They were $200.00 cheaper then Vintage Air and were very helpfull answering
    all my questions
The only problem I had was a bad compressor that they gladly replaced. I
think the compressor went bad because I accidentally let some oil that was
in it drip out before hooking it up. Their web site is:

Has anyone on the list installed a blown Chrysler hemi motor in a '55
    Chevy?
Will it fit? Any obstacles to look for, besides the obvious? This will
    remain
a street driven car. Bob, thanks for continuing this wonderful undertaking.

helpfull hint: I bought a new power steering pump for my 55 from
    harmons(they had a 10% off sale). its the standard pump for a 605 box.I
tried to put it on and the return line out of the pump is in the center and
wont clear my small block chevy motor. My old pump had the return line
coming out the back at "9 oclock" position. Im having to fab new brackets
    to
relocate the pump 1.5 inches out to clear.Just thought you might wanna pass
    the FYI on.

Hi Bob, re First Chev V8 Produced, I believe the First chev V8 was around
1918 Believe it or not, sort of remember visiting Bill Smith's Speedway
Motors in Lincoln Nebraska about 4 years back and he had a "Mint" condition
1918/1919 OHV Chev V8 in his Fantastic Restored & Rare Engine Display, Why
GM never put them into full Production I dont Know, but, Bill's Mueseum of
Engines should not be missed by any one passing through this part of the
USA. Bill has some of ( and maybe the only) rarest Engines ever produced by
the Motor Companies , along with a dedicated Staff restoring same,
Experimental, Production, Bill has it & then some .all On Display for our
Future Generation to see how Vehicles were & are Powered through History,
along with the Greatest collection of Pedal Car's etc, every thing is
Authentic and Restored to better than new.
If you want to see a V12 Chev Small Block Complete Turn Key (?) Visit
SpeedwayMotors once in your Life Time. For those who have never heard of
    Bill Smith,
he mass produced T-Ford Hot Rod Body & Chasis Kits for the Masses via Mail
Order. Like JC Whitney. Honest Charlie, Speed-O-Motive, Ed Iskenderian,
Edelbrock etc etc these Guys Gave the Performance Industry a Kick Start,
back in the Good Old days !!!!!!!!!. The day we Visited the Museum was
Closed its alongside their warehouse/Retail outlet, we were checking the
store out when someone asked us where we were from..Australia..next thing
they opened the Museum up for a couple of hours for us to roam the Museum ,
even had a young guy explain what it was all about & why it exists in this
almost forgotten part of your USA, A long way from anywhere, but well worth

On the question of the first Chevy V-8. It came much earlier than 1927. It
was more like 1916 or 1917. It had external push rods and/or external
rockers. It was not ever put into production, probably because it was not
practical rather that the power concerns. I doubt it was anything close to
the '55 small block in design. The '55 Chevy 265 has always been referred
    to
as the first Chevy V-8, even though it technically not.

Love the list. I am glad you will live forever because that is how long I
    want to be reading it.
In response to Bud Woods query. Ed Cole would have been extremely young.
    Prior to 1955, Chevy produced V8s in1917 and 1918. I saw a 1918 version at
    a
VCCA show last September 10 (just before our world got turned upside down).

There were more than minimal differences between that and the small block
    of
    1955.
I don't know what you were referring to comparing speeds in 1942 and Los
Angeles freeways today. I was on the 405 yesterday and if you were
    referring
to STOP AND GO, that is my answer.

Bob Woods said the first Chevy V8 was built in 1927 - actually it was
1917 but was in an expensive model and only a few hundred were made. The
original Harrahs museum in Sparks, NV had one on display. He also had a
air cooled copper Chev engine of 1923 which supposedly was recalled
very soon after production as it was a total disaster.

Sort of interesting what he had to say about the 1927 V8 though,
twisting the frame rails and such. Wonder how many model A and deuce
frame rails have been twisted out of shape by the Ed Cole motor?

On the 8th day HE created the 55 Chevrolet

Memory is the second thing to go, but I believe the1942 speed limit was
35 MPH, placed as an "economy" measure due to fuel needs for WWII. They
also had ration stamps - most people got three (3!!) gallons of gas per
    week.

I'm old, but not that old. My full Social Security does not start until
Wednesday the 3rd. My daddy told me.

    Greetings, Bob,

I attended my first "Bow Tie" regional event in Nashville this weekend!
    Great
group of folks--not only Dan, Lenny and Bob, but the volunteers who helped
stage the show, the quality and fairness of judging, and the fellowship.

At least four folks came up and introduced themselves to me who had read
    our
'exchanges' in your "List." They recalled the many e-mails I've sent
regarding music trivia and real life experiences, and the effort I went
through to FINALLY get a great Tri-Five Chevy, via the exposure (dare I say

    PR) in your letter.

I want to especially recognize Marlon Echols, the Tennessee Stat Associate
for "Bow Tie" Chevy, who came up to me and introduced himself as one of
    your
great readers. We spent a good part of the Friday evening 'Pool Party'
chatting about your List, The Beach Boys, and--of course--Tri-Five Chevys!

He was kind enough to walk me through the judging process and tell me where
    I
could make improvements on my '55 Bel Air.

The same "thanks" go out to Herb Spies, the FL State rep for CCI, and his
wife, for their genuine friendship and 'pointers.' I had the good fortune
    to
be parked next to Herb for two days and I learned so much from him about
improving my car. Also, congratulations to Herb for taking a 1st Place in
    his
category with 986 'Gold' points. Great job, Herb! I hope to join you and
    the
whole Pensacola, FL gang for your annual Halloween Show.

Denny made the remark that he can always count on a lot of '55s when they
come to Tennessee--especially modified and custom ones!! That was, perhaps,

the predominate category at the two day meet. It was only my third show,
    and
my first 1,000 point show, so I was there as much to learn, as to be
    judged.
I even was given the opportunity to judge in the Governor's 100 point
competition. I, and another nice fellow, judged nine cars.

Denny made the remark that we are all there to have fun and to appreciate
    all
the workmanship, creativity, and financial investment that folks put into
their cars. I might add, Denny, that we should also be thankful for the
'passion' and 'love' we share for
    this great 'family' experience!

I've barely had my '55 Bel Air three months, and have--along with my good
friend, cheerleader and mechanic, Mack Choate--put a number of days and,
perhaps, a $1,000 into the car since purchasing it from Brian Condra in
    late
April. I've done three shows, two local 'car club' type shows, placing 2nd
and 3rd, and this weekend's "Bow Tie" 1,000 point event. In the 'original
restored' driver category #1 (no modifications), I placed 1st today, with a

'Silver Certificate' total of 936 points. Not too shabby for our first such

    competition.

I'm looking forward to the possibility of going to the "Bow Tie" Tulsa, OK,

show September 21, and, perhaps, the Eastern CCI show in Mooresville, NC on

August 4. If I do these two shows, I will have doubled in five months, the
mileage that Brian put on the car in nearly three years! But if you 'can't
drive 'em, why own 'em,' is my motto! (my apologies to all the great
trailored cars--over 60--I saw this weekend in Nashville

Again, Bob, 'thanks' for all the hard and 'thankless' work you do on behalf

of our hobby! And, to your great readers, keep that information flowing!

    Dear Bob,

OK, for this weeks question first: you ask what the national speed limit
imposed in 1942 was. I believe (and remember this is slightly before my
    time)
    that it was 35 mph.

And, for Woody who commented about the supposed '27 Chevy V8: I'm afraid
    you
got the history a bit mixed up. The only engine Chevy was offering for the
1927 models (and 1928 as well) was an OHV 4-cylinder. The first (three-main

bearing) version of the stovebolt six came along for the '29 model year.
There was an earlier Chevy OHV V8, but it was in the late teens. As I
    recall,
displacement was around 288 cubic inches. This engine shared absolutely
nothing with the '55 and later Chevy smallblock. I have some references and

can dig up the specs if someone is really curious. And as to Ed Cole
    possibly
having any involvement in its' design, keep in mind that he would have been

    in kindergarten at the time!

In response to Bud Woods question about Ed Cole being in on the 1927

V8, I wasn't referring to that earliest ChevyV8. I meant that he engineered

the original modern day V8 that was introduced in the 1955 Chevrolet. Mr.
Cole (as a relatively young man) worked under Harley Earl during the last
years of Mr. Earl's career with GM. I am pretty sure that the last
    automobile
GM produced with Earl as chief designer was the 1959 Cadillac.

    Hi Bob.
I am only 38, but as i recall the original small block chevy was designed

by a man named Zora Artis Duntoff. ( spelling may not be right ). The same
man that invented alot of the flat-head ford Hi-po parts. The story that
    I've
always heard was that he designed the motor and tried to sell it to
    Cadillac,
Olds, Ford and nobody wanted it.
My father told me this story years ago. He said that Duntoff had lived in

France during WW II, and used his souped up flat-head to smuggle valuables
out of the country and away from the Germans. He would sneak out of his
bedroom, while his mother thought he was asleep in the next room, He would
run all night. My father also told me that Duntoff didn't get the credit
    but
he had invented the Arden after market HI-PO heads for the flat-head.
This may or may not be true, but its my story and Im sticken to it.
Thanks for the great list Bob!! Life would'nt be the same without it.

Re the question on why not fixed car prices. This is just my opinion. We
don't have fixed car prices because dealers make more money that way.
However with the large number of people using car buying services (Sams,
Costco, Auto Club, etc) I think car dealers may be living in the past.
With carsdirect.com, you can buy a new car and never talk to a dealer. It
