To All List Members,

In 3 years it will be the 50th anniversary of the 1955 Chevy. I have
decided to start a search for 2 very special 1955 BelAir's that if they are
still around should be brought out of hiding for all of us to see again.
The first one is the 1955 Gold 2 door hardtop that was the 1 millionth
Chevy built. It was pictured in many Chevy books.

The second one is the 1955 Convertible Red/white Indy500 Pace Car. The
winner of that race, Bob Sweikert, is suppost to have been awarded it as
part of his prize.

DO YOU KNOW WHERE THEY ARE NOW???? Or do you have any leads that I can
follow to try to track them down?
Thanks,

Kim

Dear fellow car enthusiast-
I'm forwarding this for your information. This pending Legislation, if
passed, will affect all of us one way or another. You may or may not agree
with it, but you need to hear about it. -Jerry
------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Californians,

The California legislature has passed a bill that allows the
state of California to tax you for driving! I'm not kidding. The
new bill would do everything from raising taxes on gas to
taxing you for the miles you drive.

The only one who can stop this bill now is Gray Davis. He
needs to hear from you and know that you want him to veto this
bill.

Below is an email from a California State Senator describing
the bill in more detail.

Check it out.

For America,
Bruce Eberle

P.S. Don't you think it's about time for a change of
governors in California? I don't know how you stand
this guy. If I lived in California I'd be working
hard for Bill Simon.

Subject: Legislation Alert

The Senate gutted and amended a bill (AB 1493) on Saturday
afternoon, June 29, 2002, and put in the language previously
contained in AB 1058 (the SUV tax bill). It was sent back
over to the Assembly, where it passed behind closed door
session on Monday, July 1, 2002. It has now gone to the
Governor.

For those that do not remember, AB 1058 enabled CARB to
create standards to contain carbon dioxide emissions. Their
plan for doing this was the following:

A. Raising taxes on gasoline by fifty cents a gallon;

B. Taxing the miles you drive at two cents per mile;

C. Raising taxes on SUVs and minivans by $3500;

D. Reducing the speed limit to 55 miles per hour (again);
and

E. Requiring everybody to have a "tire check" certification,
much like a smog check today.

The Democrats that passed the bill are saying that they have
amended the bill to take the concerns of opponents into
consideration. This is semantics. The bill still does
exactly what it originally did. It is now on the Governor's
desk, and it is imperative that the citizens of this State
let Governor Davis know that they do not want this bill
passed. Therefore, please contact the Governor and share
your opinion with him. Ask him to veto AB 1493. He can be
reached as follows:

Hi Everyone-
Just got a request via our Club's Message Line, looking for a '57 Chevy
Limo to rent. Seems to me that I've seen a '57 Limo running around in the
L.A./Ventura area, but I have no idea who owns it. However, you might know
of one in the Southern California/Nevada/Arizona area who has such a car.
The requestor is Larry Hockburn of the TV Show "ELIMI DATE". They want to
use it in an upcoming TV Show.

Bobby Jefcoat wanted to know if the rear end in his 56 Bel Air
was original....

If you have the original rear-end still in your car, you can
find out the gear ratio thusly....
There is a code # stamped on the front surface of the tubular
portion of the differential housing on the passenger's side.
It is pretty close to the "pumpkin" section.
The code for a 3.70:1 ratio will be AA or BA.
A 3.55:1 ratio will be stamped AB or BB.
A 4.11:1 ratio will be stamped AC or BC.
AA, AB and AC rears were manufactured in Detriot.
BA, BB and BC's were manufactured in Buffalo NY.
If your rear has any of these codes stamped into it, there's a
pretty good chance it's the stock rear....

Hello Bob,

My 4-door sedan is still a project car since I bought a -55 Nomad which
takes my time.
Luckily my -57 hardtop is running like a dream.

Does anyone on this list know whether there were any 1955 Chevrolets
manufactured with 265cui motors that had the oil filter underneath like the
1956 model (instead of on top of the engine)?

Thanks
Richard

Hi Bob,

This message is in response to Bobby Jefcoat's question about the
differential in his recently purchased 56 Bel Air. Bobby you mention that
the pumpkin has a new chrome cover and that it has ten bolts. The original
rear end did have ten bolts, however, so did the rear ends in many
1971-1981
Chevrolets. If your rear end is original, it will have an ID stamped on
the
passenger side of the differential carrier which will include the date of
manufacture. The rear ends in 56's were made in Detroit and Buffalo. If
your car was an original 3-speed stick car, the ID will contain the letters
AA or BA. The former signifies that the rear end was made in Detroit,
while
the latter indicates Buffalo. If the car came with a Powerglide
transmission, the rear end will contain the letters AB or BB for Detroit
and
Buffalo respectively. Finally, if the car originally had a 3-speed
overdrive and 4:11 rear gears, the differential ID will read either AC or
BC
for a Detroit or Buffalo place of birth. Hope this helps.

To Bobby Jeffcoat,
If your rearend has a chrome inspection cover, it is not the original rear.

The original rearend was a front dropout style and did not have a rear
inspection cover. The rear in your car has to be 1964 or newer. Most
likely,
it is out of a later model Nova or Camaro.

I have a 55 Chevy and would like to know where you classic owners purchase
a speedometer cable to attach a Turbo 400 transmission to the original
speedometer head. I need the "complete" cable for my car.

Also, is it normal for the transmission to lose a bit of trans fluid
without this cable on? I realize that there is some movement by the
speedometer gear at that end and wondered if the cable seals it up? Could
it be that I need an O-ring or some seal on the trans. end in the
speedometer gear area?

Thanks in advance to you Bob, for the list, and to all you classic owners
that keep the list alive with your questions and answers.

Kudos to Mr. Fred Vail. I am sitting here watching The Beach Boys special

When you have time it would be nice to have an overview of your time as a
promoter. It must have been a very interesting period in your life.
Thanks.

Dear Bob, I hope you can help. I have been looking for a 1955 150/210
Handyman Wagon in the Dallas TX area for the last year or two. I have found
nothing in the budget or of the type of car I want:
Want a good running, driving, solid
two door wagon with no rust and
up-dated drivetrain. Nothing fancy.
Close to Dallas TX. Please send
pictures/details.
Do you know of any cars that fit the bill? Is there anywhere on your
mailing
list I could place the above ad? Does your list ever contain lo-buck cars?
Can you send me the list please?
Thank you for all your help.

Dear Bob,

Having received this list for some time, I have come to appreciate it for
yet another reason: the people who write into it. I recently made some
comments about the first small block chevy V8 being designed in 1927. I
thought I was pretty honest and upfront that I was recalling information I
had studied some 20 years ago, and that it is an empirical fact that my
memory is quite poor. (Lawyers call this an escape clause.) Just the same,
the response from readers regarding these comments was quite worth the
blunder. The facts on this issue were brought forth. And I really
appreciate those who wrote in and helped set me straight. Hey with the list
- who needs a memory?! I don't claim to be any kind of chevy authority -
just a chevy nut. In retrospect, one motto I adopted for myself some years
ago is, "Being shown when I am down-right wrong is a wonderful thing,
because I don't ever have to worry about being wrong on that subject
again." (Provided my memory holds up.) I want to be right about something,
because I am correct - not because I am prideful. So having that said, I
sincerely thank those who wrote in on this. What a great bunch of
knowledgeable folks.

If I may correct myself again on another matter, having reconsidered, I do
believe knee-action shocks were not available in 1917 or '27 either, but
rather came out on the 1933 Chevy Eagle series. So my comment on knee
action shocks is/was also due to that old age condition called CRS (ie.,
poor memory).

Finally, I would like to ask, does anyone have the mounting patterns for a
57 chevy rear antenna installation? I have both left and right antennas,
but no way to mount them in the correct location. I have the accessory
installation manual, and it shows how to mount them, but it does not give
the measurements. It simply assumes you have the patterns. Danchuk sends
you the patterns when you buy the antenna from them, but I called them and
they said they cannot sell me just the pattern. Anyone have any spare or
used patterns? I would be glad to cough up a few bucks. Also, anyone ever
notice in the 57 accessories hand book - not the installation manual - the
customers promotional " factory option" hand book - the 57 rear antenna is
mounted on top of the rear fin crown garnish moulding. Was this something
Chevy had once considered doing?

Thanks

Bobby,
In response to your question about rear axle assemblies.... It
doesn't sound like you have the original rear in your car. '55 through
'64 passenger Chevys had no removable rear cover. The third member was
installed from the front and the housing was welded shut where you have
a chrome cover.
10 bolt axle assemblies almost always have stamped characters on the
tube portion of the housing. Almost always on the passenger side and at
the top of the tube. If you can find the stamped numbers (small
characters) I can probably identify what car it came from. Additionally,
the distance from the axle flange to axle flange (measured without
drums) and or the housing length (measured from the inside of the
backing plates at the housing flange) would confirm the number code.
Alternatively, you can skip crawling under the car, go to NAPA & buy
a slave cylinder for a '67-69 Camaro rear with 10 bolt. Chances are good
that the NAPA part will be identical to your leaker. You should be able
to visually verify it as correct. If it's not the same just take it
back. You can also get good brake shoes at NAPA. Take one of your drums
with you. Different drum diameters are possible on 10 bolt rears.

please do it again. my friend who heard you talk at the LACCC last month
told me you really gave out some valuable information. he made a copy of
everything you handed out and gave the copy to me. your information on how
to get a job for the older worker was exactly what I needed. I have been
trying to get a job after I retired and age discrimination is wide spread
just like you said. I took your advice and had my hair color changed from
grey. it did wonders for me. My children say I look 20 years younger. my
husband wants to engage in activity he was always to tired to do before.<G>

Best of all, I got a job offer today.

If I can find Jerry or Bruce's e-mail address I am going to send them a

Editor's note. As you know this is a very controversial subject and I
don't want to make anyone upset by discussing it in public. I will discuss
it off line with anyone that is interested. Let me just say this. Imagine
it is 100 years ago in 1902. You are interviewing the most knowledgeable
doctor in the US. You ask him/her if it will ever be possible to cut the
heart out of a dead person and use it to replace the heart of a living
person and that person with the dead person's heart would then live a
normal life. Might he/she say that is the craziest idea I ever heard.
