Bob, I want to share a story I heard this weekend while attending my wifes

high school reunion. My wife is an MK (missionary kid) and was raised in
Brazil. A number of MKs of various ages who had attended the Amazon Valley

Academy in Belem, Brazil got together this past weekend in Marietta, Ga.
A
number of slides were shown of various things but one caught my eye. It
was
a slide showing at least 25 - 30 '55, '56, and '57 Chevys parked inside a
fenced area. I waited until the presentation was over and asked the guy to

tell me the story behind the slide. He said that he took the picture
sometime in 1958 or 1959. The cars were all confiscated by the Brazilian
government because they had been smuggled into the country to avoid the
payment of import taxes. It seems there was a pipline of sorts through
French Guyana for not only American made automobiles and parts but almost
anything else including fig newtons (which he bought and enjoyed).
The conversation continued for a few minutes more and I asked him what

the government did with the cars. That, he said, was the sad part. All of

these cars were loaded onto barges and taken out into the deepest part of
the
Amazon river and dumped!!!! What a waste!

Bob,

I just celebrated the most famous birthday, my 57th. So how do I
celebrate, by taking a cruise in my Matador Red 57 Nomad, of course.

On 'Living for ever' theory, we can 'plan' to live forever, but we better
'live' like we will die tomorrow. The GOOD BOOK says, "It's appointed unto
man once to die and after that the judgement". Even GOD's own Son, JESUS,
only lived 33 years on this earth. I do not know if there will tri-5s in
Heaven, but oh what a place to spend eternity.

My prayer is 'may God richly bless these Tri-5 club members'. One Nation,
under GOD!

Thanks for this great site and as always, 'GOD is Love, and even more,

Ken

Bob I hope you don't find this too political or controversial. But
I had to respond to Jerry Mull's email about California AB 1493.

Dear Californians,

The California legislature has passed a bill that allows the
state of California to tax you for driving! I'm not kidding. The
new bill would do everything from raising taxes on gas to
taxing you for the miles you drive.

The only one who can stop this bill now is Gray Davis. He
needs to hear from you and know that you want him to veto this
bill.

Check it out.

For America,
Bruce Eberle

P.S. Don't you think it's about time for a change of
governors in California? I don't know how you stand
this guy. If I lived in California I'd be working
hard for Bill Simon.

In answer to:
Does anyone on this list know whether there were any 1955 Chevrolets
manufactured with 265cui motors that had the oil filter underneath like the
1956 model (instead of on top of the engine)?

Thanks
Richard
Sweden

I was parked next to someone at the Nashville TN Bowtie show earlier this
month
who had an 55 Chevy wagon that he felt sure came from the factory with a
"56
style" 265 CI V8 in that it had the oil filter cast into the block. He
hadn't
owned the car all the time but had been told it was the original engine.
The
numbers on the rest of the car indicated it was made late in 55. He
couldn't
prove it though so he was classified by counting the engine as a change.

Greetings from Nashville, TN, Marc, Ken and Bob,

Thanks for all of your kind words in Bob's Chevy List. I just read them
this
morning. Yes, it was 'fun, fun, fun' doing the interview, which took over
two
hours, but ended up with a 'net' of about 4 minutes of what they call 'face

time.' :) They also used some of my personal photographs, publicity stills
and posters from one early concerts.

They could actually do three or four 'two hour specials' and still not have

enough time to cover The Beach Boys 40+ years of giving us great music and
memories. I saw Mike Love and Bruce Johnston in Ashland, KY, last Friday,
July 5, and they still sound pretty good for a couple of 'old farts.' :)
Estimates are that there were 35,000 to 40,000 cheering folks--off ALL
ages--in the audience.

The current backup band contains at least three members who were most
likely
not even born when the 'boys' were writing and recording their greatest
music!! However, the drummer, a super guy--Mike Kawalski--has been with the

group on and off for thirty years. He even played drums when Denny was
still
alive.

It's a shame that only Alan Jardine, who is not currently touring with Mike

and Bruce, was the only one who did an updated interview for the "E!"
special. Most of the other interviews were file footage or from other shows

that have been done on the band.

The great 'black and white' concert footage--what has been refereed to as
'The Lost Concert"--has been shown a number of times in its entirety on
AMC.
Catch it sometime if you get a chance. As the camera pans the audience you
will catch me three or four times, sitting next to Brian's future bride,
Marilyn Rovell Wilson. She's still a beauty!

Also, you may wish to get a copy of the 1999 A&E Network's two hour
"Biography" on Beach Boy Brian Wilson. I filmed a number of segments for
that
special, also.

After the Ashland, KY concert I went with Mike and Bruce to the small
airport
and waiting for the band, was a new $20 million private jet, recently
purchased by Mike and Jackie Love and seven other partners. Yes, they even
have 'timeshares' for private jets!!

As I boarded the luxurious jet, complete with a 'hostess' pouring wine as
the
band unwound, I was reminded of my first concert with The Beach Boys--May
24,
1963--at the Sacramento Memorial Auditorium. I was nineteen years old, a
college freshman, working as a $1.50 an hour part-time radio announcer and
supplementing this meager income by promoting teen shows, grad parties, and

dances. I picked the band up at the airport, piled ALL of their gear into
the
back of my folk's 1954 Chevy wagon, along with a couple members of the
group,
and headed to the auditorium.

I could put on a concert in those early years for $1,000 to $1,500,
including
hall rental, ticket and poster printing, sound tech, stagehand, ticket
takers
and sellers, radio advertising, and the fee to the band!! The Beach Boys
were
playing for $350 a night in the LA area during that period, but being 450
miles north, they cost me $750, which included six roundtrip airline
tickets!
The auditorium was $150, plus 5% of the gross on anything over $1,500. The
auditorium manager 'requested' that I hire two off-duty policemen! There
was
very little need, the kids behaved great back then.

That night--as we all sat around a table at the Mansion Inn, eating
hamburgers, drinking sodas and milkshakes, and talking about the great
performance they'd just put on--the 'boys' all wanted to know how much
money
they'd made for the evening. Murry, the 'beach dad', who was the father of
Dennis, Carl and Brian, and the uncle of Mike Love, was jotting down their
expenses, which included a commission to the WIlliam Morris Agency, the six

roundtrip tickets, a couple of hotel rooms, one rental car, and a meal or
two. He announced that the boys had made $52 each--that's right, fifty-two
bucks!! The promoters and I made a bit over $4,000!!! I went to work for
them
that night!!

"And now," as Paul Harvey would say, "you know the 'rest' of the story!"

Have a great day in the 'warm California sun!'

Regards,

Fred Vail
Nashville, TN

Editor's note. I have that TV show on tape if anyone would like a copy of
it, just let me know.

In the old days at INDY, there were traditionally 50 official pace
cars for the race. These are all numbered accordingly and assigned to GM
executives and race officials for publicity duties. After the race they
would be allotted to certain dealerships, then sold to the public. Pace
car numbers 1,2 and 3 were actually used on the track and were race
prepped. The race-prepped cars were considered a liability and were not
sold to the GP. Unbelievably stiff suspension, tweaked engines, seat
belts, cameras, strobes and roll bars and later on. The Chuck Yeager
driven '86 Vette was the first pace car with a production, unaltered
engine.
The early 80's Buick Riviera turbo pace car #1 had 473 horsepower.
Gee, those pace car knock-offs that year wouldn't pull the hat off your
head. I rode in the '82 Camaro #3 and wanted OUT because it rode so rough.
These first three '82's had 350 cross-fire injection engines as opposed to
all the rest of them available only with 305's. Uhg. By that time you
could order the pace car package at the dealerships. I don't think they
were production limited by then because there were so many 78 Corvettes, 82
Z28's and 86 Vettes running around.
My uncle, Gene Thomas, worked out of the Chevrolet regional zone
office when it was in Indianapolis, it closed in the late 80's and he
worked through the Cincinnati office thereafter. At that time he was a
tech inspector for the official pace cars among other things. He was pals
with A.J. Foyt and it was great as a kid to meet some of the drivers and
ride in the Chevy pace cars.
BACK TO 1955. The #1 car was red and white, Duntov cam, 2-4 barrels.
Some of the original promo pace cars were black and white. There are
obviously some replicas out there but they usually have modern-day vinyl
graphic decals whereas the originals are painted. BUT, the alleged #1 was
in the Indy 500 museum circa 1982 and it had about a 4" circle cut into the
trunklid just right of the license plate for a camera. No spare tire and
the trunk mat was gone. I wish I could find someone who was actually
THERE. With the passing of time, circumstances and folklore alter what we
find. Cheers, John.

Hi Bob,

This message is in response to Dwight Holien's question about where to
obtain a speedometer cable for his 55 Chevy in which he has installed a TH
400 transmission. I have a 2 Dr. Hdtp. 55 Bel Air with a TCI "Street
Fighter" TH 400 installed. My speedometer cable came from Classic Chevy
International. Their part number for the correct cable for this
application
is 19-02. CCI's price for this item is $27.50 for non-members and $24.95
for members. Dwight, if you are simply replacing a Powerglide with the
TH
400, the original speedometer cable will work. Finally, as regards your
leak problem. No, the transmission should not leak fluid without the cable
installed. It sound like you have a faulty seal. Hope this helps.

My friend who heard you speak about retirement said you had to have gone to
Warton or a school like that to know so much about finance. Did you?

Jean

Editor's note. I could not get in to Warton if I paid them to let me in.
In fact, they probably would not even let me in the state. The only reason
I got in to any college is somebody must have used the wrong stamp of
approved instead of rejected. Now I get letters from my college telling
me how great a student I was. For a $1000 contribution, they will name
something at the college for me. You think if I sent them one dollar, they
will name a door knob for me?
