Re: Beach Boys/ 50 year theory of todays music; I really think that in 50
years todays music will be listened to by the people coming of age with the

music. Ever see a bunch of people of all generations hanging out at a car
show listening to Mozart? I used to hate new cars too until I bought a new
Denali and went for a ride in a new ZO-6 Corvette, "open your mind and your

ass will follow"-George Clinton. Personally, I prefer the sound of a blown
big block when driving a car, but to each his own. Two Lane Blacktop is
still
the best movie ever made, Brian Wilson and James Taylor rule!-Randy,

In reference to Linseed's questions:

I would guess that Hudson sold the least number of cars in 1955 since they
then became at part of American Motors and lost their distinct "Step Down "
design and just became an Ambassador clone.

GM definitely got in trouble putting Chevrolet 350 V8s in Oldsmobile 88
vehicles. I think it was for the 1977 MY that the event occurred. Die hard
Olds folks wanted Olds Rocket 88 engines in there vehicles, and rightly so!
People did sue GM over the swap. I believe GM did give cash rebates to the
dissatisfied customers.

Can you tell me how to find out the original purchasers of 1950s era
Chevys? Someone told me that the local dealer could tell me, but the
local dealer (Columbia, TN) says he can't go back that far. I'm trying
to identify original owners and the dealers who sold them the cars.
I've run into a couple of Chevys in typical field stored condition.
Knowing original owners will settle a debate. I can get the identifying
numbers off the cars.

Thanks for any help you might be able to give,
Roy Johnson

Editor's note. I hope someone has the answer to your question. This is a
common request but I have read that there is a federal law that prevents
DMVs from giving out that information. I know in California, it is very
hard to find previous owners. I think here, you have to pay a fee to the
DMV for each year you want then to search their records and then they will
contact the person and ask them if they want to talk to you.

After thinking about it for awhile, Kaiser actually built a few 1955
models...I bet it was the lowest in 1955 sales. They had merged with
Willys, who actually sold pretty good in those years due to being about the
only game in town with four wheel drive.

Editor's note. This answer agrees with my reference book.

Bob, it is hard to believe that it was nearly 25 years ago when GM had a
problem when the public found out that the 78 Olds 350 V8 was made by
Chevrolet. It was no problem that earlier the 460 Ford truck engine was
in a Lincoln, or that the 383 thru 440 Plymouth V8's were in Chryslers
from the 60"s on...Also, it is funny that in the late 80"s the 307 Olds
V8 was found in Chevrolet Station Wagons, or that in the early 90's the
350 Cadillac V8 was made by guess what Chevrolet Motor Division. Or, the
original Cad Seville V8 in 1975 was a 350 Olds.
As far as the lowest production 1955 auto, I would guess that it was
Packard, or possibly Hudson (both had merged with other manufacturers
earlier).

The note about the Olds with the Chevy motor was in my opinion, the start
of the end of the road for Olds.
There was a great article in the Los Angeles Times this week by Jeff Yip
about how ALL car companies are trying to fool the public by putting out
cars with different names that are basically the same car.

GM thought that it could save a lot of money if they designed one car and
sell it as a BUICK , PONTIAC, and OLDS. This worked for a while but the
public caught on and stopped buying GM cars. Their market share took a big
hit.

If you look at any GM advertising now, you will not see a Chevy motor or a
Buick motor. It is always a GM motor.

Hi Bob
I have a 1956 Chevy that was originally an automatic transmission and
converted to a 350 four speed. I had the original 265-V8 and powerglide
transmission rebuilt. I have been able to find all the linkage necessary to

put things back together. I cannot seem to be able to adjust the linkage
properly for passing gear(kickdown) to work. The transmission shifts
properly
so I know that's not the problem. Can anyone help?

Hey Bob!

1) To respond to Joe Reed and Terry Pittaway...The first Caprice
came out in 1965. Those early Caprice 2-door hardtops had a
rather unique roofline...boxy, formal-looking c-pillars...from 1968
into the early 70's, they shared a roofline with the Impala Custom
Coupe...not to be confused with a regular ol' Impala hardtop.
Also, 1968 and '69 Caprices came with hideaway headlights.

2) GM got in trouble for putting Chevy engines in Oldsmobiles.
I believe this is what led GM to making a policy of putting different
division's engines in different division's cars. My '89 Caprice wagon
came off the line with an Olds 307. I've heard the Olds 307 was a
good engine but it was totally insufficient for a 4,200 pound
station wagon. I yanked it and swapped in an '87 Chevy 350 TPI
with a Turbo 700, for 2-3 extra MPG and more than enough power
to get out of its own way. It'll even chirp the tires...which is pretty
good for a 4,200 pound wagon with 2.93 gears! Can't wait to put it
in my '57 Handyman...but that dream will have to wait while I finish
my house...oh well.

BTW...my TPI and a '93 LT-1(which is sitting on my garage floor,
waiting to go into a '68 Chevy C-10 pick-up)...both came out of Pontiacs.
GM may call today's Chevy engines "corporate" engines...but to us
die-hard Chevy fans, they'll always be Chevy engines.

Bob: From a musicians standpoint a lot of music that was produced from
the time of the song "Rock Around the Clock" until the Beach Boys and the
Beatles was quite simple. Much of this music used either 3 or 4 chords in
progression.
When the Beach Boys and Beatles came along both the writing of music,
the actual performance with back up singing using multiple part harmanies
took rock and roll music to new heights.
It was much easier to play Bill Haleys Rock Around the Clock and Chuck
Berry's music that only used a few chords than say trying to reproduce the
Beatles, "Do You Want To Know a Secret"
or a Beach Boy tune.
Try to learn a nights worth of the Beatles or Beach Boy music in order
to play three or four sets of 45 minutes each and you have a big job in
front of you. You cannot reproduce this music on stage live and do a great
job unless you have very talented musicians. We had a great band in the
60's and 70's. The first band was broken up by the draft. The second band
was broken up when two of our singers quit to go to New York to record as
back up singers for many different groups.

Gary Howard

Editor's note. Anyone recall when they drew numbers to see where you were
in the priority for the draft?

Mike,

I have not experienced any similar noise with my '96 Blazer. Have you
by chance replaced the starter just prior to the noise starting? I had
an old Ford, that I replaced the starter on, and had more severe
clattering sounds when I would accelerate at all hard. I eventually
found that Ford had several slightly different pinion gears for the
starters with more or less of a bevel at the tip, and the re-builders
don't take this into account and just put on which ever pinion gear is
convenient. With less bevel, the pinion gear would tap on the flex
plate sometimes even when retracted. Under acceleration, the flex plate
would touch intermittently. The problem I had with that old Ford could
be solved by a different starter with a different pinion gear, or by
shims to space the starter out so the gear didn't extent in to the flex
plate when it was retracted.

Thanks,

Relative to the "tinney noise" problems being experienced with a 4x4 Chevy
"S" truck with V6 automatic: I'd suggest first running the engine for a
short
time with the serpentine drive belt removed to eliminate the various
accessories (alternator, A/C compressor, idler pulley(s), etrc.) as the
possible noise source. If not eliminated by disconnecting the belt, my
suspicion would be the lock-up clutch in the torque convertor.

To check this, trace the wiring harness to where it connects with the
torque
convertor clutch. Then, effect a temporary connection so you can control
convertor clutch lock-up with a switch (instead of letting the computer
module do it as at present). See if the noise changes or is associated with

switch function.

This sounds suspiciously like a problem I'd run into before. I was told
that
the only fix is to replace the convertor. I didn't, but the same noise was
still there 50,000 miles later when I sold the truck.

With respect to the question on who sold the fewest cars in the US in the
'55
model year: if one wants to consider US makes only (excluding low-volume
European and other imports), I'll say the answer is Kaiser. The '55 Kaisers

were basically the same as the '54 models, and I believe sales were
considerably below 100 units.
