Hi Bob

This is my first e mail to you. I am so new to this scene. A friend of
mine is building a 1955 chevy bel air which got me interested in the car
and car shows. Was at Lead East in Parsippany, NJ last Saturday for the
first time and had a blast.

Do you know of any car clubs (chevy in particular) in my area of
Stroudburg, PA.

My goal right now is to find a key chain of a 1955 Chevy Bel Air.

I was told by Hemmings to find the Bel Air Car Club on their sight but
could not find it. THought that they might be able to help me

do not own a class car, but am interested

Thanks for any help you can send me

What American made car had a self leveling ride for the rear of the car in
1956. It will probably be my luck that there were more than one. But my
aunt and uncle showed up at our house one day with a brand new 1956
that had this self leveling ride.
Do you know which car had this feature?

Editor's note. Anyone recall when they drew numbers to see where you were
in the priority for the draft?

I graduated high school in the spring of 73 then went to
junior collage two semesters in the school years of 74-
75 and 75-76. During that time, before the draft ended,
there was a random drawing to determine what order the
remaining drafties would be called to serve. I don't
recall what my number was other then it was close to the
cut-off.

A few weeks ago someone on the list asked about how to
clean/restore the aluminum dash panels without removing
the little bow-ties. I didn't see the answer, could
someone forward it to me.

Thanks,

Greetings Bob,

I wanted to make you and all of your readers beware of a automobile
shipping company that has a habit of damaging classic cars while shipping
them.

The company's name is Dependable Auto Shippers (DAS) based out of Compton
California and they damaged my mint condition 1955 Belair during the
shipping process. What they did to my car is nothing compared to some of
the examples my insurance company gave me. When they loaded my car, I
requested and paid for a top mount load. This I did receive, BUT when they
lifted the car to put another one underneath they kept lifting and smashed
it into a cross member at the top of the trailer, Not only did they smash
it, but my body man thought that they lowered and relifted the car causing
more damage. You would think that there would be some kind of sensor on
the truck to prevent such an accident but there was not. In summary, they
caused over 7100.00 worth of damage just to the top and this is what they
said, "since I didn't purchase the optional insurance, DAS was not liable
for the damage done to my car." "It was my fault that the car was not
properly insured and they were not going to do anything about it. (This is
according to the Loss Claims Director Vern Allison)" So, I turned it
into my insurance and spoke with the underwriter on Thursday and this is
what they had to say about DAS. Currently Haggerty has more then 10
outstanding claims against DAS and the claims supervisor told me that this
included a claim for the total loss of a 225,000.00 Duecenberg. Another
example was; Battery acid leaking down on a convertible top, burning a hole
in it and damaging the interior. (Apparently batteries are supposed to be
removed before shipping to prevent such an accident from happening.) And
this was just 2 examples!

I did as people advised and checked with the local better business bureau
and they didn't have any negative remarks against them. Recommend them to
get references from the shipper concerning some of their success stories.
Tell them to ask other car members about who they have had success
transporting their car and spread the word. Don't let a shoddy company
such as DAS that has no moral responsibilities touch their vehicles. If
enough word concerning the quality of their work gets out we can get people
like this off the road and out of business. As for your readers WARN them
about using this company as I will with all of the local clubs affiliated
in the Sacramento. area.

Bob and List Members:
Everybody seems to think the big Oldsmobile engine mistake was a Chevy
engine. I remember a friend had an Olds with a diesel engine that died
before it got to 30,000 miles. I don't remember the year, but that would
be
my answer to that question.

PS Bob, I am sorry I missed you at the LACCC car show. Mine was the
restored '55 convertible.

Editor's note. I saw your car and what a beautiful car it was. Did you do
the restoration work because who ever did the work did a great job on it.

At the time GM put the Chevy motor in the Olds, a lot of Chevy people
thought they made the Olds a better car.

the rear view mirror was mounted on the dash..... I have seen some
Mopars of the same era with dash mirrors but I don't remember Chevrolets
coming from the factory that way.... The owner said that only the first
200 or so 56's came out with dash mounted mirrors.... Is this true?

Bob,
This in reply to the person asking about Dakota rack and pinion steering
from your 8/31 list. I wrote in several months back about installing a 99
Dodge Dakota front frame clip in a 57 2 door post car. This upgrade not
only
gives you 11 1/2 inch disc brakes but also either manual or power rack and
pinion steering. There is fabrication required but most of it involves a
new
core support mount and reinstalling the original front frame horns. We used
a
one piece frame for our application. We began by leveling the frame and
anchoring it our garage floor. After taking all our measurements, wheel
centerline, spindle height we separated the front stub from the original
frame. We used the front body mount as a reference point. We had the
wrecking
yard cut the Dakota frame section extra long so we could trim it to fit.
The
57 frame slips inside the Dakota, we removed the outside of the Dakota rail

so we could get inside to weld. Once all welded we fabricated a new outside

plate from left over Dakota frame and extended it back to the body mount to

blend the weld. Motor mount stands need to be fabricated, but this setup
allows you to move the engine back also. The front frame horns were trimmed

off the original frame and reworked to fit the new clip. A new core support

lower mount was also fabricated. Our car has a 502 Big Block with a 700R4
trans and narrowed 9 inch Ford rearend. We also pocketed the rear springs
into the frame like the CCI kit (way overpriced for what you get, make your

own parts for about $30). This installation also lowered the car by almost
3
inches from stock height. We used 16 inch AMERICAN polished Torque Thrusts
all the way around. A front end alignment was no problem just be sure to
take
it to a good shop. A Dakota clip complete with the power steering rack
should
only cost about $300. Since we completed this we have found that the newer
Dakota's will work also. I suggest trying to find one with the sway bar,
not
all had them, also a V8 clip is better because of the heavier springs that

come with it.
I do have one piece 55/56 and 57 frames that I would setup for anyone
interested, possibly on an exchange deal for there old one piece frame or
just sell outright. I see no reason this swap won't work on the two piece
frame. 248 393-9111, I'm located in SE Michigan.

In regards to the draft lottery. I was drafted in 1969, went in November
and remember getting letters from my "good" buddies telling me that I was
#336 in the lottery. I got these letters early in 1970. So I would guess
around the first of the year 1970 in when the started drawing lottery
numbers.

Have we made progress in 100 years? Judge for yourself. In 1901:

The average life expectancy in the United States was 47.

Only 14% of the homes in the United States had a bathtub.

Only 8% of the homes had a telephone. A three minute call from Denver to
New York City cost eleven dollars.

There were only 8,000 cars in the US and 144 miles of paved roads.

The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.

Alabama, Mississippi, Iowa, and Tennessee were each more heavily
populated than California.

With a mere 1.4 million residents, California was only the twenty-first
most populous State in the Union.

The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower.

The average wage in the US was twenty-two cents an hour.

The average US worker made between $200 and $400 per year.

A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year, a dentist
$2500 per year, a veterinarian between $1500 and $4000 per year and a
mechanical engineer about $5000 per year.

More than 95% of all births in the United States took place at home.

Ninety percent of all US physicians had no college education. Instead,
they attended medical schools, many of which were condemned in the press
and by the government as "substandard."

Sugar cost four cents a pound. Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen. Coffee
cost fifteen cents a pound.

Most women only washed their hair once a month and used borax or egg
yolks for shampoo.

Canada passed a law prohibiting poor people from entering the Country
for any reason, either as travelers or immigrants.

The five leading causes of death in the US were:
1. Pneumonia and influenza
2. Tuberculosis
3. Diarrhea
4. Heart disease
5. Stroke

The American flag had 45 stars. Arizona, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Hawaii
and Alaska hadn't been admitted to the Union yet.

The population of Las Vegas, Nevada, was thirty. The remote desert
community was inhabited by only a handful of ranchers and their
families.

Plutonium, insulin, and antibiotics hadn't been discovered yet.

Scotch tape, crossword puzzles, canned beer and iced tea hadn't been
invented.

There was no Mother's Day or Father's Day.

One in ten US adults couldn't read or write.

Only 6% of all Americans had graduated from high school.

Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were all available over the counter at
corner drugstores.
