Greetings Bob and all other list followers , from Melbourne ,Australia i
have a 1957 chev belair sports coupe under going restoration , i have owned
this chev for 7 years , its missing the complete interior, if you have
seats etc i would like to hear from you .
Mary had a little chev, its paint as white as snow and every where that Mary
went the fords were sure to know.
They tailed her to the drags one day, to see what she could do, and they
all tried so very hard, but now the fords are blue.

A little bit of Australian humour for you all.
Keep up the good work Bob. Great list.!!

Anyway, we have updated our site and have new pot
metal and cast iron repairs and wanted to let
your list recipients know that we are making a
training video for how to repair aluminum, pot
metal and cast iron--it should be ready for
purchase by Thanksgiving. We are going to
include 60-90 second clips on our site showing
basic repair "how to" tips for the DIY welder.

Check out our new site and if anyone has any
questions about pot metal repair, feel free to
email me and I'll get back to them as soon as
possible.

I hope that I don't make a fool of myself over this, but here goes,
somewhere around 1962, i saw a car coming down the street with only 3
wheels on it. It was set up for 4 wheels, but If memory serves me, one of
the front wheel was missing. Does anyone know about this strange deal? Is
there, was there a car out there that could be driven, even a short way
minus one wheel and tire??
I recall being so taken, I forgot to look at the car itself to see what
model it was.
Help me out here Bob, I you think I dreamed this then throw the E-Mail in
the garbage.

Thanks for the list, I look forward to it.

Gary Howard

Editor's note. There was indeed a car with 3 wheels. It was called the
Scott Sociable. The left front wheel was missing. Only a few of them were
built in the 1920s. It looked somewhat like a motorcycle with a side car.

What you might have seen is a trick car that was somewhat popular in the
1960s. You can make some cars run on 3 wheels by removing one front wheel
and putting a lot of weight behind the back wheel on the opposite side.
This worked best with cars that had a large distance from the rear wheels
to the back of the car. The weight is put as far back as possible.

The Van Nuys Chevrolet assembly plant is now a large shopping mall
including
multiplex theaters with stadium seating. It is, appropriately enough,
called
"The Plant." They also planned a police station on the site, and have set
aside room for it, but I don't know whether it has been built. The Plant
was
a project of Selleck Construction. Tom is brother/son of the developers.

Dear Bob,
I always look forward to your list and agree we should drop in a few
"stories" now and then instead of turning it into a "for sale" site. When
I
was restoring my 57 Bel air hardtop, my buddy in Hanford, California said
hey
Willy, I bought a box of Chevy parts at a garage sale a few days ago for
$3.00. There my be something you can use. Some months later, we were
having
a few cold pops at his place, I lived in Modesto at the time, and he
remembered the box. We went out to his shop and opened the box to find a
complete set of perfect Bel-Air wheelcover covers complete with spinners,
and
a complete set of Stainless interior trim for a two door hardtop. I asked
Len what he wanted for the parts he replied another case of beer. I felt
it
was worth at least $25.00.....even a blind squirrel finds a nut now and
then!!!!!

and sneaking into the drive-ins.....

Greetings, Bob and Chevy List readers,

Well, I never got off as easy as 9 cents, but 25 cents was the price I
remember. The Del Paso Theater (now, tragically torn down) on Saturday
mornings. Candy was 5 cents, pop and popcorn, 10 cents. "Bon Bons" were a
'high ticket' item at 25 cents.

Don't forget gas at 12 to 14 cents a gallon, a nice middle class home for
$27k, and, of course, a '55 Bel Air 2DHT for $2,300!

I was always the guy who drove the car while my buddies tossed a coin for
who
got into the trunk! But, there was always 'car load' night at the 49er
Drive-In for about $2!!

Great memories of an era that was most precious to many of us. It's hard to

explain to someone who was not there. Fellowship, family, innocence, fun,
adventure. Plus, we got to listen to all those great 'oldies' when they
were
'newies.' Wow. What a time!

Hi Bob Fellow Members,

I have a 55 Cameo Pickup. I love the truck and really enjoy driving
it, however the steering gear box is very sloppy and is actually dangerous
to
drive. This is the only flaw with the truck, and it is real
bad. I would like to see if anyone on the list knows where I
can find a good original, or rebuilt unit. Maybe someone knows where
I can have mine rebuilt, however I'm afraid it is too worn for a rebuild.
I thought about installing power steering, since the truck was already
modified
when I bought it.(Later model GMC steering column hooked to the original
steering box and newer drive train). I would prefer to keep the
gear box original, just in case I ever decide to take the whole steering
unit and truck back to original. That is the way I really prefer.
But if anyone knows of a power steering kit for the Tri-Five trucks, I may
go that way. I've never seen one, but that doesn't mean their not out
there. Also, if anyone has or knows where I could find an original,
complete steering unit, "column, wheel and gear box" I would gladly
put it back original. Prefer automatic "Powerglide" shifter if
possible.

Thanks and Regards,

Bryan Condra

Hi Bob and Everyone else out there in cyberland!
I had a 1956 Packard Super Clipper that my Grandpa gave to me after he went
to that big swap-meet in the sky. This car would fly! I remember in the
70'sburning down 5 on my way to San Diego from Santa Barbara, cruising
along at 80mph and some citizen would come sliding up in a new Lincoln
Continental with his nose in the air, shoot I'd let the putz get right next
to me then step on it and leave him like a VW bus at a green light. And
youz was talking about the self-leveling suspension, boy that was a fun
option! There is a little switchon the dash that activates this system to
level the car when under a load. Switch it on and the system goes to work,
switch it off and the car stays exactly as it sits when the switch is
turned off. Now if your creative you can see the options which have
heretofore been unavailable in other vehicles. At a stop we would switch
the system on while the car sat level, jump out and sit on the hood causing
the front of the car to sink low !
with our weight. In a few moments the system would go into gear and the car
would level itself. We'd then jump off and run to the dash and turn the
system off. Now the front was jacked high and the rear bumper was just
inches off the ground, an instant Low-Rider! Or we could do the opposite
and the rear would stick up like a stink bug. It was lots of fun! I don't
think the manufacturers had this sort of thing in mind but we sure enjoyed
the options. And the big roomy back seat came in handy too..
I just love cars!

BOB,

I am the proud owner of a '56 210 4 door chevy wagon I found it on line
from a dealer in Washington, Austins Pro max. I was looking at a 57 that
they had in stock but by the time I realised that ,yes, this is the car
that I wanted the very same day the car was being sold. so ,1 round trip E
ticket latter Im on way to Tacoma. My niece ,Her husband and kids live just
outside Tocoma so I thought if the car wasn't all what it looked and they
said it was on line, I would have a nice weekend visit. I had been in
contact with a shipping company to have the car shipped to me, but the car
drove so well the next morning I was on my way back to the Central valley
of California, I know what you are thinking -is this guy stupid or
something, well stupid is as stupid does. After a few visual checks of the
hoses, belts, oil, tires, I was on my way, besides the uneasy feeling of
driving a nearly 50 year old car for the second time, and 1 slight miss
calculation of the fuel level (oh yah and 1 stop for a new radiator cap )
it was a wonderful day and a half drive. To make a long story short I am
looking as much information as I can get for any and all parts. Right now I
am looking for the interior trim ring that goes around the lift gate, the
one that attaches the carpet, also any information on adding disc brakes to
a stock front end. Thanks for any/all help. Chris Nightengale, Delhi Ca

Hello Bob,thanks for all your work on a great list.
To answer the question about the first year that Chevy built the
El-camino,it was 1959.It was the only year that was based on a full size
frame. The next El-Camino was built in 1964 on a Chevelle frame.
A local body shop custom built a 1957 El-Camino back around 1972.One of
his customers had a 1957 Nomad in great shape.A tree came down in a storm
crushing the rear roof section. The insurance company totaled the car,so the

body shop owner bought the car and made an El Camino.I've always wondered
if
the car was still around.

available. We have another request - not sure if it is for the Cars for
Sale Listing or this Parts one. Ours is a WANTED - NOMAD - 1955/56 (or
57) could be considered. We would like a restored car. Our preference is
'55 or '56. Doesn't have to be a brand new restoration as long as it is
within last seven years or so, and is in good to excellent condition.
Preferably stock. We are in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada - and certainly know
the United States has many. But hopefully there might be some Canadians
reading your list too - our dollar is a big factor, as I am sure you are

Here is a question for list members. What car refuses to die? It was
first built in 1963. The company that built it went out of business in
1964. Another company took over and built it for awhile. Then another
company built the car and then yet another company built it.

The car was last built in 1991. Now (2002) another company has announced
it will be building the car. It has 2 doors and a long hood. It has a
plastic body like the Corvette.
