The car that wouldn't die must be the AVANTI.

My car is a 55 2-dr sedan, currently under restoration. Not too much is
original.
Powered by a .030 over 327 with a 700-R4 and Nova rear.
Also have a 55 Big back window short bed next in line for resto.

I have inquired once before and got a fair response from one of your
readers, but I am still shopping for the "right" (ie "cool") roof rack for
my 56 Nomad. He suggested an old Vista Cruiser rack, but it wouldn't hold
surfboards. My perfect rack needs to be billet or chrome or stainless or ???

The standard Yakima or Thule surf racks (or bike or kayak) simply won't
look right on a classic Nomad hotrod. Does anyone know someone who will
custom build me a rack which is "italicized" (leaned forward) and made from
billet stock? I can always add the Yakim/Thule accessory mounts, but the
legs and crossbars need to be very nice, clean and simple looking. I saw a
couple of surf racks I liked at custom car shows, but the owner's weren't
around to inform me of where that are available. I think they exist, but
need some tips on where to go. Suggestions anyone?

Thanks,

Bob,

My experience with Ebay is to ask plenty of questions about the item you
want to buy. There is still nothing like trying before you buy and you cant
do that on Ebay. Most of my purchases have been up to my expectations.

To Bob Speirs,
What do you have against 1960 El Caminos?

To Fred Vail,
Since you enjoyed my 9 cent Saturday matinee story, I'll tell you how it
worked. Each kid would hand the cashier a dime and in return would receive
a
ticket and a penny. The ticket+penny was handed to the doorman. He tore
the
ticket and placed half in a box to use for the prize drawings later. In
exchange for the penny, he handed you an individually wrapped carmel.
Those
were the days!

Bob,

In reply to your request about E-bay: I have purchased around 80 items
on E-bay and have only had two problems. I have learned from these
problems: 1) DO NOT go by the photo of what you are buying as anything can
be made to look good in a photo. Example: I purchased a used grill for my
1955 Chevy. The grill was advertised as "not show quality, but good for any
DRIVER". The photos showed a very shiny grill so it looked like all the
chrome and stainless were in good shape. I paid $80.00. When I received it
I was disappointed. The chrome surround pieces were OKay and the edges of
the horizontal stainless were somewhat shiney, but the internal surfaces
were painted with a shiny chrome PAINT. So instead of a deal I got about
what I paid for as a new chrome grill goes for around $250. And 2) I
purchases a computer modem and asked the seller a question about it after I
received it. I emailed him several times and he would not reply as he is
not required to stand behind what he sells.
Anything you buy on E-bay should not be something that is really really
important as you have little time to verify the item and you pretty much
have to hope the seller is honest and is willing to work with you if you
have a problem. It's really BUYER BEWARE on E-bay. E-bay can stop a
dishonest person from selling, but that doesn't help you if you have been
stiffed by them. And that dishonest person can reregister and sell again
under a different name.
And unless the sale is over $500.00 the local district attorney will not
get involved. So if you buy something for under $500 and you send the
money, but you never get the item in most cases you are just out of luck.
There are a few small things you can do, but most are considered harassment
and you might end up in trouble yourself.
So once again BUYER BEWARE, but have fun as it is a place to find the
unexpected. I actually bought a stuffed alligator on E-bay!!!

Hi Bob,

This message is for J Worrell who requested assistance in deciphering the
VIN and cowl tag alphanumeric information on his 55 Chevy. Mr. Worrell,
the
VIN information says that your car is a 1955, Model 210 Chevy that was
built
at the Janesville, Wisconsin plant and that it was the 149,183rd vehicle
assembled at the plant that year. Its cowl tag information translates as
follows:
Style: 1955, 2 door sedan
Body: Assembled at Janesville, using the 21,481st body produced by the
Fisher Body plant that year
Trim: dark green gabardine with light green patterned cloth
Paint: shoreline beige upper body and Neptune green lower body with Neptune
green wheels. The Duco Paint code number for the shoreline beige is
25357602, and the number for the Neptune green is 28157951.
You included the letters EZ after the paint code, but I have to assume that
those letters actually appeared on the next line of the cowl tag labeled
"ACC," which is where all of the car's options are listed. In this case,
if
your car says EZI on that line, it was equipped with tinted glass. Hope
this information helps. Good luck with your restoration.

Bob, this is in reply to the 3-wheeled car:
The Scott Motorcycle company was founded in 1908 by Alfred Angus Scott in
the
UK. For many years Scott built motorcycles that enjoyed tremendous success

in competitions; so much so that Scott's were deemed to be overly efficient

against motorcycles of the same capacity and hence their cubic capacity was

multiplied by a factor of 1.32 for competitive purposes.
In 1919 the Alfred Scott left the company he had established so that he
could
pursue the development of the Scott Sociable. This was half sidecar and
half
a car 3- wheeler. It is thought that this was possibly designed for
military
purposes, perhaps as a machine gun carrier.

Unusually for most 3-wheelers the single front wheel was on the offside

and was in line with the rear wheel resulting in a layout similar to a
motorcycle and sidecar combination. The body was made from wood and
mounted
onto a tubular, triangular frame. The vehicles were powered by Scott's own
578cc water-cooled, two-cylinder, two-stroke engine but were not successful

and production ceased in 1925. Alfred Scot did not return to the Scott
Company but they continued to make motorcycles until 1979 in which their
models featured some of the key characteristics of the original models
built
in 1908.

Bob,
Hi Again! A guy that I just sold a 67 Impala remote trunk release to has a
57' Bleair 2 door hardtop he wants to sell. Here is a copy of the email he
sent me and his email address.
Thanks Again - Warren

Thank you so much!!! Got any other cool items for these old Impalas? And I

see your name bowtieguy56. Know anybody looking for an unrestored 57
Belair
hardtop? It's very nice, zero rust and is green with light green top and
interior. Super nice car to restore or use as a driver now. This is every
mans dream car! 283 motor powerglide tranny. I'm thinking of going all out
on
it but I'm more into my 64 and 67 convertible and I'm looking to purchase
another early 60's Impala convertible instead. I bought it from an older
gentleman who has just been keeping it indoors for years not paying it the
attention it deserves! He also has a 56 4 door hardtop and another 57
belair
that is a 2 door sedan and he likes those more. Can you believe it? He only

drove the sedan....Go figure. He said the old sedans were cooler to him.
But
if you know anybody who would be interested let me know. Just needs minor
things to be close to show quality. I'm expecting a high dollar offer to
part
with this beauty. All I was gonna do was shoot the car green again and the
top white instead and add some accessories. But I keep getting dreams of
going full out restoration back to stock and know I'll drop alot of money
into a car I just kinda like. 57's a super great cars but 61-64 Impalas
were
always my thing. I just bought it to have a nice 57 for awhile and make
some
cash to buy my new convertible Impala or trade for it. So if you have any
buddies looking for a super nice unrestored needing little 57 hardtop let
me
know please. Thank you. Hope to hear from you soon. Car is located in
Salem,
Oregon. Email - Duwsk@cs.com

Hi Bob and All Tri-5ers,
I think the car he's referring to is the Studebaker Avanti. I owned an
original one back in the 1963 model year, when they were new, and it had
160 on the speedometer. I never quite got it that high but I once did a 120
mile trip in one hour, turned around and did a repeat. It had the
supercharged R-2 289 cid engine and was rated at 290 hp. It was fast and
the design was years ahead of it's time. Thanks again for the list, Bob!

Bob, I am afraid your latest question about the "car that refuses to die"
might be too easy, but here goes: it is the Avanti. Originally produced in
1963 by Studebaker and lastly in 1964. Then the molds and parts were taken
over by a Studebaker, dealer Newman/Altman and produced for a few more
years. A redesign and updates for safety followed from another
owner-Avanti
Motor Corporation (using Chevy driveline/engine combinations--alas the
relevance for our list). And yes, the original style bodies were produced
by
the same company as the Corvette. Another interesting note: these had the
first production front disk brakes on any American car.

I am the owner of a supercharged 1964 (one of 703 produced in 64, only half
of which were equipped with Paxton blowers). This is the third 64 Avanti I
have owned over the years. As you can see, I am taken with the car.

Being drawn to rare American cars, I am the proud owner of a 997 point 1956
Nomad as well!

Keep up the good work with the List Bob.

Steve

Editor's note. Thanks for the info. I had heard that the later Avantis were
just full size Chevys with a different body but I never knew if it was

Bob, in response to Biily Holdens question about the car that wouldn't
die; had to be the Avanti first built by Studebaker then by several other
companies. What a cool car that was with the '64 model being the best
looking one(square headlight bezels). Tho the car has been somewhat
bastardized by some of the builders, the sleek lines of the original
still manage to show through. When the 63's hit the showroom I went up to
test drive one, no such luck. Guess I looked to young to be considered a
bona fide buyer.

I believe that the car seen in the 60's may have been a French made
Citroen. The local dealer in the Atlanta area (where I lived at the time)
would pull a wheel off the car and hang his signs on the sides for
advertising purposes. This may have been as late as the early 70's. The car
was a Citroen SM, with the Maserati engine.

With respect to the question about operation of a car with only three
wheels:
my recollection is that Bob is correct in stating that this stunt
(operating
a car with only three wheels after taking off one of the fronts - usuallly
the RF - and placing a considerable quantity of ballast in the left rear of

the trunk) seemed to have been popular in the early '60's.

One that I can recall for certain was a Chrysler corporation promotion.
They
were touting the stability and solid construction of their new 1960 models
with unitized construction. And, they were crowing about their new
alternator
which put out current even at idle speed. To show off, a new Plymouth was
driven from coast to coast with only three wheels and no battery (the
battery
having been removed after initial start-up).

Here is a question for list members. What car refuses to die? It was
first built in 1963. The company that built it went out of business in
1964. Another company took over and built it for awhile. Then another
company built the car and then yet another company built it.

The car was last built in 1991. Now (2002) another company has announced
it will be building the car. It has 2 doors and a long hood. It has a
plastic body like the Corvette.

Hello Bob,

Gary Howard inquired about "a three wheeled car" in the 60's.

There is also a possibility that he saw a French built Citreon.

The Citreon had a very unique suspension. It was a hydraulic system that
would compensate for the wildest of imaginations.

Citreon used to demonstrate the flexibility and safety of their unique
system by removing ANY wheel and the car was still driveable. Pretty nice
if you had a flat.

Popular Mechanic's Magazine did exactly this test - and Tom Cahill (auto
editor extrodinare) was shocked to actually see it work!

So, Gary - hope that answers your question.

Bob - keep up the great work on this list. I have met the nicest people
here - and even found my dream '55 Bel Air Sport Coupe in San Carlos, CA.
I purchased that from Rick Federighi - another member of your list.
