Bob & Friends,
Have many questions, but here a few.
1. What is or what does "Vortex" mean?
2. Is there any place/markings on a 327 engine that tells you it is a 4
bolt
main?
Thanks for your help.

Bob

Thanks for sending the tapes of what it was like to be a teenager in the 50
and 60s. My whole
family enjoyed the tape. My children, now adults, watched the tape and told
us that we sure had it
easy as teenagers. They thought times were much tougher when they were
teenagers. I guess
every generation believes this.

I can relate to Bill Johnson's experience as I had one like it. I was at a
stop light in San Francisco
when all of the anti war demonstrations were taking place. I was in my old
VW convertible when
I heard a bang and them something fell through the convertible top in the
passengers seat. At
first I thought it was a rock and I was going to reach over and throw it
out of the car. Before I
could do that, it started hissing and out came tear gas. I don't have to
tell you that I didn't stay in
the car long. I made one fast exit and was running way when I heard a
crash. I turned around and
looked where my car had been and it had rolled down a hill a short way and
crashed into a police
car in the next block and the police were in the car. I just knew I was in
big trouble.

I thought I had better go back and see if anyone in the police car was hurt
so I turned around and
ran back to where my car had hit the police car. To my surprise there was
not a lot of damage to
the police car or to my VW. I guess the police wanted to know if the
driver in my VW was hurt
so they opened the door and the tear gas covered them completely. They ran
away as fast as they
could so I could see they were not hurt. I headed for the first building I
could find that was open
and went inside to get away for the gas.

After about one half an hour I went back to check on my car and see what
was happened to it. I
had expected it would have been towed to the police impound yard but much
to my surprise, it
was still there, as was the police car. There was no one around that I
could see. The tear gas has
mostly been blown away by then so I got in my VW and drove home. I had to
let the car air out
for a couple of weeks before the smell was entirely gone. I did not drive
the car for awhile
expecting to get a ticket or something from my car running into the police
car. My buddy fixed
the VW up and I continued to drive it for 3 more years. I never heard from
the police of the city
of San Francisco.

Friends,

Does anyone out there have a TF truck with a hydramatic transmission?
Someone other than me must. I'm still looking for the frame and dial
for the column. The little plastic pieces that indicate which gear you
have selected.

I don't need the pieces from you if you have them, just a tracing so I
can fabricate my own out of plexiglass.

Any help would be appreciated.

Bob, do you know of a tri-five Chevy club in Orange County? I am aware of

the Los Angeles Classic Chevy Club but since I live in Anaheim Hills I am
hoping there is a local club dedicated to the 55-56-57 Chevys. I have a
'56
Bel Air Hardtop and two '57 Cameo Pick-up trucks and would like to meet
with
others in the area who have vehicles of that era.
thanks,

Editor's note. I believe there are some members of the Orange County Chevy
club on this list. I hope one of them will contact you.

Hi Bob,
This is not really a Tri-Five subject, but several years ago it was
determined we would have fewer collisions if headlights were on in the
daytime. Some manufacturers, like GM, made it happen but we still see many

newer cars without daytime lights and have looked at some new cars without
automatic lights. What gives? Is the mandatory date not here yet? Does
someone know what the law says?

Editor's note. When I was in Canada a few years ago, all new cars had
daytime lights on. Perhaps some of the list members in Canada can tell us
if it is mandatory for all new cars to have them. It seemed like a good
safety feature to me. When I owned an Explorer, I bought the part to make
the daytime running lights work. It was a simple installation.

Please let the folks know that I am selling my 1957, 235 six engine. I am
the fourth owner of this car and the engine is the original with about 90K
miles on it. The head was redone about 10K miles ago. The engine is
currently in my car and it runs fine. Uses a little oil but runs good. I
would like to let the new owner hear it run in the car before I pull the
engine. Many new parts on the engine, the generator in new, the carb has a
recent rebuild all is there including the starter motor. The car has a 3
speed trans that I am keeping. This car is now being driven weekly.

I would like to get about $300 for this engine. I can email photos of the
engine to those interested.

Bob,

I know this is not Chevy related but since a lot of your list readers
use on-line auctions especially Ebay. You may have seen this but I
wanted to pass it along to be sure. I would hate to see any of my fellow
Chevy lovers be taken in by these guys and I don't need any more cases
coming across my desk. I have enough work to do now. So include it on
the list if you would like.

There has been an identity theft tactic that crooks are using lately and
the link below from the David Horowitz site outlines how it works.
We (at SBPD) received this as a fraud investigation from a local victim.
Fortunately he did not provide any information to the crooks.
This fraud could be set up to look like it comes from any legitimate
source and asks the user to send user names, passwords, social security
numbers, credit card numbers and CVV codes (the 3 digit code on the back
of your card at the end of the signature line). The card number and CVV
will be asked for when a reader makes a legitimate purchase on-line or
over the phone. Than it is OK to give it out, as that is the purpose of
the number.
This fraud used to be done over the phone and most credit card holders
learned not to provide the information. But some people using the
internet do not have the same fears and take the necessary precautions.

Your readers should be aware that a company like Ebay or a credit card
company would never ask for you to confirm personal financial
information in the manner this fraud does.
If anyone has received a request from Ebay or another company they do
business with that asked to confirm the information they need to check
with the company and to make sure the company knows the fraud is going.
The person also needs to check their credit history and credit cards to
make sure the fraud has not started.

Tony Ballestrin

Editor's note. Tony, that was excellent advice. When I teach classes on
financial planning, I always tell people to NEVER give out their Social
Security number to anyone for any reason unless it is for a government
agency or for a job application. You should NEVER give your Social
Security number or credit card numbers over the phone or Internet unless
YOU started the conversation. If you get a call or e-mail asking for your
financial information, just ignore it.

Identity theft is a serious problem. If you live in California, starting
in 2003, you can put a LOCK on your credit report. Once your credit report
is locked, you must approve all releases of information from it. This
will put a stop to most of the identity theft. I recommend you put this
lock in place. There are 3 major credit reporting agencies. I have the
information on how to contact them. Send me a private e-mail if you would
like this information.

I am sure Tony would agree with me that identity theft causes the victim
MANY MANY problems.

While I am on the subject of scams, has anyone received e-mail from someone
in Nigeria wanting to use your bank account to get millions of dollars out
of the country? Of course it is a scam. I usually send back an e-mail
telling them to just send me a check and I will take care of there problem.
I got 1 e-mail back telling me where to go and it is not cool where they
suggested I go.

To Dusty in Denver,

The term "Billet" refers to using a solid block of metal (a billet) being
used as a starting point to carve out a part in its entirety. Rather than
casting a piece or a part with molten metal, or welding or bolting separate
pieces of metal together to make a part, billeting involves lathing, or
cutting an entire part from one chunk of metal much like a sculptor hews
out
a statue from a block of marble or granite. Billet parts are solid,
one-piece parts. Hope this helps.

Bob,
I am looking for a reference book that would have the specifications for
the original rear leaf springs (passenger 4 leaf type) so I can determine
if a re-arch is needed or not for springs bought at a meet and off of a
car.

I used to know where this was but have forgot. There is a eye to eye
measurement and a degree of bend measurement someplace. Maybe another
reader will recall.

The elusive blonde T-bird babe is Suzanne Sommers. I used to know a neat
triv-Q about George Lucas. It had to do with the license plate number on
one
of the cars in one of his movies that had a special significance to Mr.
Lucas. I think it was one of the license plates from Graffiti. I normally
won't ask a trivia question unless I know the answer, but surely at least
one
reader will be able to clarify this one for me. Thanx, Sedanman

named his sound system.

I do believe the young lady in question was Suzanne Somers - who later
achieved dumb blonde status as Krissy Snow with John Ritter (son of Tex) in
the sitcom "Three's Company". It was her first real movie part, as the
same was true with Harrison Ford ("Bob Falfa ) and his stompin' 55 (natch)
