Been waiting a few years for a neighbor to be ready to sell his wagon, last week he said he was ready. Its been in the garage since 1974. He is the original owner. I have the original title and invoice from the dealership. 55 210 4 door townsman 265 powerglide we are going to did it out of his garage tomorrow. Im excited to say the least plans are to keep it all original take all the usual steps for reviving the engine and drivetrain fog the cylenders drop the tank check the brakes hoses etc. before we attempt to start and drive. A slow and methodicle awakening. trying to up load some pics i dont think i m doing it properly ill keep trying ....look forward to sharing this resurrection project

On wagons, to remove the tank, you'll need to move the rear end out of the way..........

I hope your kidding me?... so whats my alternative ?

If you put the car on a lift, OR jack the car way up in the rear supported by stands under the frame, release the shocks off the lower mounts, then Maybe the rear will drop down far enough to get the tank out? Is it leaking? Are you sure you need to remove it? The sending unit and pickup can be removed using the above technique without complete removal of the tank...

Jerseyboy

not leaking fuel has been in tank for 45 years condition of sending unit ( sock on end of it) not known ....so i thought i would remove have it dipped and cleaned and replace sending unit if needed

It's probably cheaper and better to get a new tank than to mess with cleaning yours. Sending unit is 0-30 ohms but imo I'd replace it anyhow with a new one. It's probably rusty too.

Thanks to all here for the advice ....last night I was successful(pulling plug and emptying tank) disconnecting gas line sending unit wire fill tube I cut the straps dropped the rear as far as it would go with the shocks removed .....just not enough. I have a small bottle jack and put it between the frame and rear and was able to get a little more room on one side but not enough. Im going to get another small jack and try the other side and see if the tank will come out. If not ...looks like i will drop the drive shaft loosen U bolts and slide rear forward on perches ....any thoughts , advice, recomendations are welcome
.

It seems that you are going about it with the right approach; hopefully you're not a smoker with those open containers of gasoline.. :)

thanks for all the help I stubborn so I went ahead purchased another bottle jack and tried to squeeze enough room by jacking the rear down from the frame someone said drop the shocks might give you the room......not enough ....so I finally dropped the drive shaft removed the u-bolts slid the rear forward and like magic :) the tank dropped out :) thanks for yours and Chevy nuts advice I order a tank friday 997599769977 ....install hopefully goes smooth

fired her up over the weekend a little noisy after all these years:) .... good news is put her in drive and with no hesitation at all drove out of the garage bad news is put her in reverse and nothing ....I moved the shifter beteween P and N to see if I could catch something ...but nothing. I do remember when we were removing her from the garage the first time I tried to get it out of park it was stuck and I had to pull down hard to get her to release from Park. Im hoping that the linkage needs adjusting and was too late last night to start that process. Any thoughts coments or recomendations are welcomed PLEASE andThanks in advance

Jerseyboy... your wagon sure is looking LOTS better after digging it out of the prior owners garage and cleaning it and of course your work so far! :)

I've heard that the phone images will come out 'right side up', IF you take the photos wtih your phone held horizontal with the 'shutter button' to the right... Try that and let us know how it works?

PS. The light 'oak' color around the windows almost makes your chevy wagon look like a 'woody'... :)

Im going to try that tonight, thanks Gary for that info. I took some pictures before dinner of the fuel tank (so these will be sideways) ...what Chevynut suggested in a post to me was I shouldn’t even try to have it cleaned that it would be rusted ....well he was more than right. I cut it in half today so I can take it to the scrap yard here are the pics the vibration from the sawsall worked all this loose ...burried my finger up to the knuckle . The PO painted that LIGHT OAK and its is starting to grow on me as im cleaning it up thanks for saying so .
Jess
well now its telling me these picture files are invalid

It's look better Jess.. better and better.. :)

and these photos make the paint look a bit darker than before... not so much like navajo tan now, so perhaps more like the autumn bronze which was the original code... Although I'm not sure I've ever before seen an autumn bronze car, I'm now leaning to yours being one and perhaps original paint... :)

thanks Gary I spoke with Bob ...last week he said its the original paint....
