OK, so I now realize that every system in my 55 Wagon requires replacement or refurb. Only stuff that works is what I have had my hands on.

So todays topic is the heater and the heater control. Its got the deluxe heater.

I pulled the heater box and control panel and blower. Installed a new core, control valve, blasted and painted everything. Installed new cables, new gaskets. NOS heater switch- the whole deal. So today I put it together and all went reasonably well until I got to the heater control.

It needed levers, knobs, a switch- total rebuild. So I pulled it apart, put it together, tried the levers and....
one slightly bound while the other freely swung. I looked at the housing and it looks like it has a twist. I dont have another to compare it to. Is that normal? I could see the lower cable retainers were staggered so perhaps the twist is correct but I just dont know.

I looked at a couple on Ebay but couldnt tell.

Thanks, Scorp

I believe the 55 and 56 levers are different, do you have the right ones?

Ordered the right levers from Danchuk- Part number 465 and they look like the illustration.

Here are pics- It looks like there is a twist and it could be factory on purpose but I dont have a reference to confirm:

Scorp,

I remembered I had a loose temp control for a '55-56 in the basement, so I went down and made a few pix. I hope they help you figure out your problem... Yours appears to be twisted??
PS. Just noticed that Lee stated that '55 and '56 controls were different which I didn't know. I *think* this one is from a '55 (but I wouldn't swear to it since it's been out of a car for 40+ years)...

Yes that frame is definitely twisted. Apparently there are different levers for 55 and 56. It looks like it might just be in the way the cables attach. I always thought it was the same heater control assembly.

Thats what I thought. Thats also why it fought me pulling it out. Because it took some effort to bend it, I was wondering if the factory had some kind of offset built in. It may be possible to straighten but will likely break in the process.

So does anyone have a heater frame they want to sell? :)

Bama, want to sell your spare? I just need a frame. I checked ebay and whats out there is currently complete assemblies.

I think mine are complete assemblies as well. I'll take a look at what I have but they'd be from a 56.

Scorp... I'm not sure this one is a spare, since I disassembled my '55 Nomad (partially) back in the 70's... this one may be from it. If you can't find one quickly, I'll check my other shop and see if I have additional ones lying around.

PS. I'm pretty certain either the '55 or the '56 would work and no one would know the difference.

I think Cnut is correct, the difference is how the cables attach. The cables are different too for the same reason.

The housing, switch, and wiring is different also.

So I started working on straightening the frame. I have it pretty close; it looks like its off about an 1/8" now, looking at the cable retaining plate at the back.

I drilled out the rivets holding the retainer, and using the bench vise began working on it. I will post pics when I am done. I figured it was worth a shot, plus the box of junk parts from the wagon is overflowing. ;)

Post some updated photos of your work Scorp, and let us know how it's going...

I had to put a post out here to make sure the site was still working.. :)

In the spirit of "Dont let the perfect be the enemy of the Good",

I got it to about 1/8" off

Here is where it started:
10032

Here it is now:
10033

I had to relocate 2 rivets and you can see how much its off, about an 1/8":
10034

Heres how it looks in front:
10035

It fits in the dash fairly well. Because I couldnt get it fully straight without risking damage, when I put the cable holder in back and fit the rivets, it threw it off, so I redrilled.

Not perfect but useable.
