Are you sure it's a 9 inch rear? All the Ford rears of those years were not 9 inchers (according to a Mustang expert friend of mine). I sold him a 1970 Mach I (351 engine/auto) and he was surprised that it had a 9 inch in it.. said the smaller rear was more common.

The sure way to tell if it's a 9 inch is to look at the bottom 2 studs that hold the pumpkin into the housing. If it's a 9, you cannot fit a socket onto those nuts,(no room) a wrench must be used.

My Ford buddies tell me that Boss 302, 351 and All BBF got a 9 inch, the only difference was 28 spline axles on 351 and 390s, the so called hipo stuff got 31. I have owned several Mustang/ Couger rears and found this true. As far as width 67-70 Mustang, Cougar and 66-69 Fairlane, Torino and Cyclone are 60 inches wide. All the aforementioned got wider after those dates. I can tell just by looking but Hillbilly is correct.

Dave, that is 60" measured from the wheel mounting surface drum to drum. FWIW...... '67 - '69 Camaro (both the 10-bolt...... And stronger 12-bolt rears from Camaro SS cars) are same width, as are '67 - '69 Firebird rears (which are stronger than 10-bolt Camaro rears of same years and have axle bearing retainer plates rather than C-clips).

Good luck,

Harry

That is outside flange to outside flange with drums on. Remember Cougar gets wider in 71 and wider yet in next gen.

i`m sorry, markm, don`t understand flange with drums on. the housing flange would`nt change drums on or off. so, i take it, 60 inches, outside of drums. thanx! ok, and now, measurment of the `57 factory rear? thanx!

Something to consider... as we know, a stock 55-57 Chevy, is 60" wide. However, there are some 9" (stock) rear housing that are 57 or 58" wide. Early Bronco's for example.
I'm running a stock 9" F*^D housing that is 58" wide, which allows the use of a deeper-dish wheel, yet I don't have mini-tubs nor relocated springs. The backspacing on my wheels is 3.5" (8" wide wheel wrapped with a 255/60/15 tire). I often get positive comments about the look of this combination...

I love the look of your car and it's rear wheels; the '58" rear seems a great way to go for the deep dish look in a 'near stock car' with good meat tires as well...

Utah? or Mississippi? :)

I used to buy every 57-59 Ford Fairlane rear I can across they are 57 wide and inject them into someone who has drank the Furd Koolaid. Same width a Pinto and 64-66 Mustang.

You must have been a Mississippi resident at that time (running a MS tag); what part?

i don`t think i`ll put it in the `57, but i think it`s a good price. and my rear is holding up quite well with all the hammering it gets. moser axles, al brunau girdle caps.

Everyone I ever had was right at 60, next time I have Dads one owner # match 68 Mustang on lift I will check again. I ran one out of a 69 Cougar under my 67 Camaro in the 70s and even left the spring perches in stock Ford location. The 12 bolt I replaced it with was the same width. It is a #match 67 only housing with a traction bar on pass side axle tube only.

curious, why only one bar, on the left?

67 Camaros had a bad wheel hop issue this was the fix, for 68 they staggered the rear shocks. When they went to patent the Idea they found out Cord staggered shocks in the 1930s, they shut up and forgot the idea. The bar is on the right rear on Z28 and SS cars.
