I believe that 205/75 is the maximum that is recommended for stock 5 inch wide wheels. Many people run 215/75 on stock wheels but it is not recommended by tire manufacturers. Any larger tire could cause problems.

Tabasco is right. I checked the specs for a few different tires in the 205 to 215-75x15 sizes on Tire Rack and while the 205 is OK for a 5" rim, for the 215 size the minimum recommended rim width is 5.5" I think the 205 is probably the largest size that will fit in the stock spare tire well also...

Roadster, What are your hopes to achieve? there was an optional (accessory) Full wire wheel cover available in 1955. The '56 Wire wheel covers incorporated a wire wheel partial cover which sat over a '56 small hubcap.

Both of those 'wire' wheel covers are available on the used (and sometimes) NOS market. and perhaps in repro as well.

I *believe* the '55 and '56 BelAir wheels were essentially the same re incorporation of these covers.

I too believe 55 & 56 stock wheels are basically the same.

Lou,

The '55 and '56 wire wheel covers are significantly different (I hope I didn't mislead you with a poorly worded statement previously). If you aren't trying to be totally original, then use the one you like the best, and there are others that might be attractive to you which are much less expensive to buy than either the '55 or '56 chevy wires. The thing is we don't just 'look' at the wheels/wheel covers, we look at the CAR (in total) especially with original cars, and the wheel covers that are original for the year are the ones that look *right*, at least to me.

Have you SEEN wire wheel covers for both years?
