Posi did not become available (for pass cars and Vettes) until Dec 56. BUT, probably VERY FEW cars didn't actually come off of the assembly line with a posi rear until the very end of Dec or very early Jan 57.

ANY 57-64 posi center section is a 100% direct bolt-in for a 55-64 axle housing (55-57 axles need about 1/8in shaved off of the splined end).

There is an early (57-59) with 8 plates, and a late (60-64) posi unit with 10 plates. Either unit is interchangeable in any 55-64 rear-end case, But the early and late individual parts are not interchangeable. The later 60-64 posi units are the better choice

57-64 Posi units, AFTER about Mar-Apr 57, could quickly be identified by a large P next to the casting number. The Detroit posi rears got the thin P and the Buffalo rears got the thick P.
