57 Chevy Stepside 1500 Series
Haven't dug deep into the wiring yet.
I was a certified aviation electronics tech.
I'll post my findings along the way.
When I step on my brakes all my turn signals light up. When I tried to use the blinker lever, (80s steering column currently installed) the lever broke off and doesnt move. So I use hand signals sometimes... I'm in Cali... do I really need signals?!
I have an aftermarket column and wheel (Chrome). Trying to find time to install.
Once I have time to install, I plan to troubleshoot wiring.
Refer to images...
My thoughts:
Possible ground (Process of elimination, I'll check)
Or maybe a short in the 80s column, maybe it will be fixed with new column.
I found an old note with a hand written makeshift wiring diagram...
It has an 80s column with cruise control... is this the kind you set and go to sleep? I tried but lucky it didnt work... (joking) refer to image of paper.
I am leaning towards crossed wires. The brakes shouldn't have anything to do with the front blinkers or running lights. As for back usually they are separate as well. With my experiences the brake lights were separate from running lights and blinkers.
Turn and running lights did interconnect, some had separate bulbs but same lenzes, etc. Not sure about the 50s though. I would assume those were separate as well.
I have:
Front: 2 yellow/orange lenz running lights/turn signals.
Rear: 4 red lenz running, turn, & brake lights.
Reverse: 2 clear mounted on rear bumper (plan to remove)
Not sure what I will do for reverse lights at the moment. Maybe shoots some suggestions with pics please.
As for the rear: I plan to make either the top red lights the brakes or the bottom. I dont think there is a rule on that. So the others will be the blinkers & running lights. I have to check the bulbs for double filaments... if so, the one with double filaments will be the brake and running.
I might just replace with LED lights to fit the 4 locations: Reverse, running, turn, & brakes.
Maybe send me some ideas on LED replacements?
I am open to unconventional ideas as well. Mad Max style. My son finds the rigs on the movies fascinating. He now wants to chop up everything.
Thanks all.
I am looking forward to completing this project.
