Mechanical Fuel Pump PSI How Much Is Enough For a Stock SBC 350?

The car was originally equipped with a 283 Turboglide. Now it's powered by a 2010 GM Goodwrench, 350. It's essentially a long block made by GM of Mexico. It's not a performance engine it's more of a truck replacement engine i.e. low compression 8.5 to 1 or 8.0 to 1 compression something like that. It's backed up by a 700R-4 trans. It's stalling out at about 2000 RPM when it shifts from 3rd gear to 4th gear. It acts like it's running out of gas. The fuel pump is a Carter OE style pump Classic Industries PN#TF700049 spec on this pump is between 3.5 and 4.5 psi. It still has the the single fuel line with no return line. The carburetor is a Edelbrock 1403 which is about 500 CFM. I pressured tested the pump and it's putting out 3 psi maybe a scosche over 3. Is that enough PSI? I'm thinking the engine probably needs 5 to 6 psi? The gas tank is properly vented, the fuel filter is new and I can blow through the lines into the gas tank with very little effort. Any help would be appreciated. Maybe I'm chasing the wrong Gremlin.

    Hello Fifty-Seven 210 shoe Box

I think generally fuel pressure on a carburetor fed small block chevy should be between 3 and 6 psi. Under load it should maintain and not drop.

    Thanks Sid
