    Gasser

Help me understand what is a gasser. A name given to a class that these cars do or did race in? I know one when I see it with a straight front axel and sometimes a tank out front where the bumper once was and the front is raised up some. Obviously these are drag cars but does the name gasser mean something more?
    Thanks
    Al

      From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"A gasser is a type of hot rod originating on the dragstrips of the United States in the late 1950s and continued until the early 1970s.[1][2] Gassers are based on closed body production models from the 1930s to mid-1960s, which have been stripped of extraneous weight and jacked up using a beam axle or tubular axle to provide better weight distribution on acceleration (beam axles are also lighter than an independent front suspension), though a raised stock front suspension is common as well. Common weight reduction techniques include fiberglass body panels, stripped interiors and plexiglass windows
The name arose because they competed in a gasoline-fueled drag racing class, rather than one using methanol or nitromethane.
The gasser is the predecessor of the modern funny car."

"The “gasser” name arose because these cars were drag raced in a “gasoline driven” class, as opposed to using racing fuels such as nitromethane or alcohol. Cars entered in this class were designated in various divisions (A/G, B/G, A/GS, etc.) based on a weight-to-engine cubic inch displacement ratio."
