    1957 Chevrolet oil canister filter

From what the parts books say the 1956 and 1957 Oil Filter canisters are 7"5/8 inches tall . Can someone tell me if there is suppose to be a spring in this 56 /57 oil canister? If you run an engine without a spring and the filter element is 1" short will this decrease the oil pressure ? Or if you ran the motor with the oil canister and no filter element in it should this affect the oil pressure ?

I don't think the spring in a canister oil filter or any other oil filter has anything to do with oil pressure. If anything, it would be a bypass if the filter became clogged. I would guess it was a spring to hold the filter element in place only.

Hey thanks for the input . By looking at the Danchuck parts book you can see that the 56 and 57 had a taller canister at 7"5/8 tall and the later 1958 and up used a shorter can . I have been looking to see if the original 57 Canister came equipped with a spring on the long bolt or not . if you run the car with a shorter filter element and no spring , it seems that the filter may not filter correctly but I can't see a shorter filter effecting oil presser just because it's not pressed up against the upper housing . It's like saying that running without a filter element in the can would affect oil pressure , if you can agree with this , or not , I appreciate your opinion greatly .

I am changing the oil in my 57 Chevy and the last time a shop did it. They must have threw away the plastic thing that was at the bottom of the oil canister. Is that necessary? I'm not sure what it was for as things seem to be running okay without it. oil_canister_kit.jpg
