might be available?
I have always thought that the difference in the silver and
gold "V" on the Chevy trunk hood was
associated with Belair (Gold) and the other models
(silver). Recently, I ran across someone that
believed these were associated with the 2 engines - Does
anyone have an answer?

Subject: RE: Attn: California Senate Transportation

Thank you for your e-mail and I am in strong agreement that
Assembly
Bill 2683 is a bad bill. As Vice Chairman of the Senate
Transportation
Committee, I have always opposed all such bills. I voted
NO on
Assembly Bill 2683 on June 29th in the Senate
Transportation Committee.
Unfortunately, however, the bill passed out of the
committee. Be
assured that I will continue to fight against this bill on
the Senate Floor.

In response to Hugh Sieck question.
The "acceptance" is a scam.
A friend of mine almost fell for the same thing. At some
time you will be asked
to put some of your money at risk. His was that they wanted
him to pay the
transport company and he could keep the "extra" money in
the money order.
(working on your greed instinct). The bad guys use time to
their advantage since
that instrument has several clearing houses to pass
through.
When you sign a negotiable document (check or money order)
you are guaranteeing
payment of that instrument. You will have no one to go back
to (UAR). By then
the car is gone and you are responsible to your bank for
the bad instrument.
His gut told him something wasn't right and he called the
bank. The fraud dept.
said that this is all to common. DON'T DO IT. Find someone
that you can check on
before giving up the car and title.

Re: A.B.2683, S.B.708, S.B. 42
Honorable Senators of The California Senate Transportation
Committee,
This is a ridiculous and redundant action that was formerly
studied, researched
and considered, and because of it's minimal impact on the
solution to the
reduction of air pollution, should remain "As Is"
Reason: "This law, enacted in 1997, acknowledges the
minimal impact of
vehicles 30-years old and older on vehicle emissions and
air quality. Vehicles
30-years old and older constitute a small portion of the
overall vehicle
population in California and are regarded by clean air
regulators and industry
watchdogs as a poor source from which to look for emissions
reduction" Sam
Memmoloo.
For those who are unfamiliar with the history of the
original S.B 708, and what
would change, I submit the following:
Existing law in California exempted all pre-1974 vehicles
from emissions testing
until Jan. 1, 2003. After Jan. 1, vehicles 30-years old and
older are exempt
from emissions testing. This law, enacted in 1997,
acknowledges the minimal
impact of vehicles 30-years old and older on vehicle
emissions and air quality.
More History and Facts:
"Currently, there are several types of vehicles that are
exempt from Smog Check:
motorcycles, diesel-powered vehicles, all 1973 and older
vehicles, vehicles four
model-years old and newer, as well as non-combustion engine
vehicles. SB 42
(Kopp), enacted in 1997 (Chapter 801), exempted 1966-1973
vehicles from the Smog
Check program and created the 30-year rolling exemption
that will take effect in
2003. The 30-year rolling exemption will exempt post-1973
vehicles from Smog
Check when each model year becomes 30 years old. Thus, in
2003, vehicle model
year 1974 will be exempt. In 2004, vehicle model year 1975
will be exempt, and
so on. Prior to SB 42, only pre-1966 vehicles were exempted
from the program."
Rob Oglesby, Legislative Director Air Resources Board
Bills That Tried To Takeaway SB42: Since the implementation
of SB42, there have
been three attempts to dismantle SB42. All three attempts
failed. The first
attempt to take away the rolling exemption was SB1811 by
Senator Maurice
Johannessen in 2000. The second attempt, SB800, was also by
Senator Maurice
Johannessen in 2001. Both bills were lobbied down. SB1811
was vetoed by the
Governor. SB800 was gutted and changed into a construction
defects bill. The
third bill was SB708 by Senator Deane Florez in 2003. That
was also lobbied down
with major objections coming in from all over the State
(including Jay Leno)
before it got to its first hearing. To read the bills, go
back to the State
Senate Web Site and Select the appropriate session. Based
on the large organized
successful car lobby, the rhetorical question is: whose
Next Who wants to
take apart SB42?
How Many Cars Does SB42 Cover? : California Air Resources
Board made a
presentation to the California Inspection and Maintenance
Review Committee on
March 26, 2003 in which they said there are 416000 PRE-74
vehicles. That number
may vary up to 500000 depending on whom you talk to, but
for sake of discussion
assume 416,000. That is 416000 PRE-74s of all ages in a
fleet of 32,000,000
vehicles in California:
1920s Tbuckets driven only to shows or trailered.
1930s, 1940s or 1950s vehicles driven only to shows or
trailered (many)
Many vehicles registered as Historic Vehicles (Historic
means they can be
driven to shows, in parades and for maintenance Not as
daily drivers.).
Some of that group from all ages are modified for racing
(PRO Street) but are
trailered to the race course. They are definitely not
daily drivers.
There is a large contingent of Military Vehicles that
only go to shows. Yet
they are registered. They are not daily drivers.
The Classic Car Club of America vehicles discussed below
(a select subset of
1925-1948 vehicles) are generally trailered to car shows
and then driven in to
the show.
Many of those vehicles have limited use (1500 to 2500
mile) insurance.
Many carry a 7500 mile insurance limitation such as mine.
They are not on the
road every day; they are only on the road for maintenance
and car shows.
Based on the above observations, it is a fair assumption
that 75-80% of those
vehicles are not on the road every day. That leaves
approximately 83,200 in a
fleet of 32,000,000 or of 1% as daily drivers. In the
hearings for SB42 that
number was considered insignificant. Senator Quentin Kopp
was known as Mr.
Transportation while in the State Senate. Those numbers
went through the Senate
and Assembly Transportation Committee plus the Senate and
Assembly
Appropriations Committee. The legislative committees did
not see any problem
with the bill.
Need I say more Senators and Legislators ? I relinquish my
time to
Assembly members and Senators that drive classic cars -
chic!

STOP MASS HOUSE BILL 1722
Massachusetts Bill to Ban the Sale/Installation of
Aftermarket Exhaust Systems
Continues to Move through Legislature
Although we thought we had successfully stalled this bill
in the Committee on
Public Safety earlier this year, a bill (H.B. 1722) to ban
the sale or
installation of an exhaust system which has been modified
in a manner which
will amplify or increase the noise emitted by the exhaust
continues to move
though the Massachusetts Legislature. It remains an
extremely damaging piece of
legislation. IT MAY BE COMING UP FOR A VOTE VERY SHORTLY-
PLEASE HELP!!!
After months of inactivity, H.B. 1722 was recently sent
back to the
Massachusetts House Rules Committee . If recommended for
passage by this
committee, the bill will be scheduled for a vote by the
Massachusetts House of
Representatives. It is PARAMOUNT that we act swiftly in
force again to finally
defeat this bill .
Please contact the Massachusetts Secretary of State's
office at 617-727-2828 to
find your local legislators. To find via the Internet:
HOUSE BILL 1722 ARGUMENT:
H.B. 1722 ignores the fact that aftermarket exhaust
systems are designed to
make vehicles run more efficiently without increasing
emissions.
H.B. 1722 does not supply law enforcement with a clear
standard to enforce,
allowing them to make subjective judgments on whether or
not a modified exhaust
system is in violation.
H.B. 1722 fails to recognize that aftermarket exhaust
systems offer
increased performance, which can make a vehicle safer by
improving its ability
to merge, pass, travel uphill, etc.
H.B. 1722 would make it difficult for hobbyists to replace
factory exhaust
systems with more durable, better performing options.
This bill tramples on the rights of vehicle enthusiasts in
Massachusetts!!

Subject:L.A. Classic Chevy Club and "Chevy Madness"
Hi friends- Please mark your calendars for one of the
biggest SoCal Chevy
Events: CHEVY MADNESS
Sunday, August 15th, will be a return of the all time
favorite Chevy Show, CHEVY
MADNESS. Old timers may remember that back in the Eighties
and Nineties, this
monestrous annual Chevy Only Show was held at Magic
Mountain. Starting this year
it will be held on the grounds of the Orange County
Fairgrounds, in Costa Mesa,
CA.
All years of Chevrolets are welcome. Old to new, stock to
modified. The L.A.
Classic Chevy Club will be handling the '55-'56-'57 Chevy
section. It will be a
Judged Show, so entrants will not have to run around for
three hours voting.
Should be a refreshing change for many of you!
See: http://horsepowerpromotions.com/html/frames.html Then
click on Upcoming
Events and Chevy Madness. Also there is a PDF participant
form you can use to
enter your Chevy. This form has information for all those
interested in entering
their car or truck.
There will be tons of vendors there with all sorts of stock
and modified parts
to see or purchase. Food stands will be open and there will
be live entertainment on the stage.
When coming from the 405 Freeway, use the Fairview Road
offramp, and go SOUTH.
Turn EAST onto Arlington Drive and enter Gate 4 on your
right. Free Public
parking. $10 General Admission. Show hours: 9 am till 5 pm.
In any case, we want to encourage all of you to attend,
with or without your
Chevy. Please pass this on to other car enthusiasts who
might be interested in
participating or seeing this Show.

For Luis Felix & Tom Beang,
There is no interchange frame for the '57. Only '57
Chevrolet
chassis frames will work. There are some differences
between models
also; there are additional body support brackets hardtops
and
convertibles have a big cross member. Generally, any '57
frame can be
modified to fit any '57 body without too much trouble with
the
exception of convertibles.
There are no Impala chassis frames that will directly
interchange.
'70s Impala frames are "perimeter" frames, like the '55-57
frames and
have been used by rodders to get rid of the straight axle
suspension of
early cars ('40s), but this is a lot of work even for the
pros. You
would have to remove & reinforce certain body braces, make
& place new
body support brackets on the frame, etc. It would be much
easier to use
an original '57 frame or buy an aftermarket replacement
frame.
Editor's note. Anyone know of an aftermarket frame vendor.

<funcars4us@hotmail.com>
Bob,, I was jarred in to action here by a few messages from
the last edition of
the Chevy List. First I just HAVE to comment on the
question of using a Caprice
chassis under a 5,6 or 7 Chevy. Hey guys! THINK about the
long term consequences
of what you are doing when you put a sub-frame or late
model chassis under your
car. I see SO many of cars done with various sub-frame,
frame clips, complete
frame installation/conversions that are OUTDATED! When you
use a "late model"
chassis, it will SOON be out dated and probably any
replacement parts will be
obsolete! Example, the Plymouth Volare clip was really
popular about ten years
ago. Now you can't get any repair parts and there are no
more of these cars in
the junk yards! SO be VERY careful about replacing that
chassis! I do think that
if you are going for a completely new upgrade you should
consider a chassis that
is of all new construction built by one of the guys that
offer these. I have
seen several cars with these new rolling chassis and they
sure are nice.
The next note I want to respond to is the one from Hugh
that has his 56 Chevy
for sale and got an offer from the overseas buyer for more
than he is asking...
Well, has ANYONE on this list that has offered a car for
sale on any website NOT
received one of these offers? They are ALL phony in my
opinion! I have started
to reply by telling them that, first, give me the contact
information of you
shipping agent. Then I ask them to send the money to the
shipping agent so I can
pick it up in CASH when I deliver the car. If you are too
far from the "shipping
agent" I tell them, send me the money. The car nor the
title leave my hands
until I receive full payment by direct wire transfer. Or
guaranteed bank check
which will be held on deposit for the number of days (my
bank tells me the
number) necessary for clearance. Most of these guys never
contact me again. I
have had a couple try different angles but I think that
they have figured out
the scam is not working as well as before. Most of these
guys try for the
overspent amount to be returned to them. I think that most
never expect to get
your car out of the scam just a few bucks. Real overseas
buyers know that
additional costs will need to be paid to deliver the car to
the point of
shipping and possibly other items that may inconvenience
the seller. When I sell
a car to an overseas buyer, I do ask for and prefer
dedicated container
shipping. I do all the container loading myself. I don't
want some guys out in a
shipping company running the car into the side of the
container, tying it down
with old rope or nothing at all! Or sending by "roll-on
roll-off" where the car
is exposed to treasure hunters that may strip the car while
in transit.
Now on to another question from the couple attending Hot
August Nights in Reno
with the 67 Vette. Your note said that you had a quote for
$1000.00 each way
from Southern Cal to Reno. Hmmm, That is the highest number
I have every seen
for moving a car that distance! Check the internet, yellow
pages, call a couple
of the collector car sales stores in your area. You should
pay no more than 400
each way for this with insurance. Right now the transport
companies are pretty
busy bringing cars into the L.A. area to ship overseas. The
dollars is low in
the world market so overseas buyers are moving on this
advantage. Transporters
are leaving L.A. with partial loads. Make a few calls! By
The Way, I will be at
Hot August Nights at the Swap Meet and Car's For Sale Event
at the Reno
Livestock Center. I am an event sponsor (I-VAN Collector
Vehicle Appraisal
Service www.I-van.org) and will be doing appraisals and
inspections for buyers
and sellers. Look for me at the entrance gate and inside
the "Cool Car Showroom"
next to the information booth.
And LAST fro now. was the insurance problem from the person
that wanted to drive
their Nomad more than the insurance will allow. It is
pretty simple to get the
coverage you want. State Farm keeps coming in on top as far
as I can tell by my
customers that I do appraisals for. But nearly all the
specialty insurance
providers offer a form of what you need. Hagerty and J.C.
Taylor are tops. I'll
say this again, Be VERY careful about exactly what your
policy will do for you
if you have a claim! It is SO VERY alarming when something
happens and you find,
too late, that your are NOT covered.
Get an written appraisal, take it to your agent, ask them
what happens if next
year or down the road, the car is, damaged (while parked,
in the garage, on a
trailer, at a show, by someone with or without insurance,
stolen, burned,
etc......... And Good Luck! I'm finished now.

From:kfmartel@rockwellcollins.com
Hugh,
This sounds exactly like a scam that was happening last
year, except the
country is different. Next they will ask you to send them
the difference. Tell
them if they really want to buy your car to do a money
transfer to your bank.
But first ask your bank how to do this safely as you really
do not want to give
out your account number. Perhaps you could open up a new
account just to have
the money transferred.
Remember a cashier check is NOT SAME AS CASH as it takes
the bank a little
while to verify that it is good.
Or you can have the "Pick-up/delivery agent" pay you in
cash. Or just tell
them the truth, that you have heard of a scam involving
cashier checks and that
you both need to find a better way to protect both of you.
If they are for real
they should understand and be more then willing to work
with you. But, under no
circumstances send them any money or let them have access
to your personal
information (ie. bank account no., ssn, etc.)
I'll bet that anything you say to these people that may
indicate you suspect
anything will end all communication with them as this
really does look like the
same old scam, just worded differently.
Good Luck and keep us informed.

From:MuzikBiz01@aol.com
Greetings, Bob,
Another great weekly List read. I think that guy who got a
message regarding his
Chevy is the target of a rip-off. A scam, pure and simple.
They have a check
that is 'higher' than the amount he wants for his classic.
The next step will be
for them to ask for a 'refund' of the difference. Of
course, their check will
not be worth the paper it is printed on, and he'll be
giving them 'good money.'
I get about ten scams a week from various con artists. Most
disguise themselves
as sick and dying heirs to large fortunes--usually long
hard to pronounce names
of women or sons, mostly from "third world" countries--who
want to spread their
wealth before they pass on. Others are barristers, or
attorneys, representing
folks who need to get their money out of one country or
another.
I guess they do this because the Internet has made it so
easy. They don't even
have to pay for phone calls or postage stamps anymore. I
think it was P.T.
Barnam that said: "there's a sucker born every minute." He
was right a hundred
years ago and he's still right.
Have a great weekend, Bob.

Bob...Some stuff
Johnkk asked about the 4 cylinder Pontiac. They were used
in early 60's
Tempests that had the trans mounted at the
rearend....Mickey Thompson
set some world's speed records with these engines.
You might get a Harvey Wallbanger at a Home Depot, but
since it is made
with Vodka and Galliano, it is more likely found in a
club....
I have some stuff for sale:
I have a pair of Chevy Racing 292 Turbo heads. These are
cast iron
angle plug heads that have been professionally built. They
have been ported
and
polished (Takes a FelPro 1205 gasket) and flowed around 290
cfm at .600
lift. They have stainless 2.08/1.65 valves and 1.55 (?)
Isky springs
for a Roller cam. They also have guide plates and 3/8"
screw in studs.
I ran these one day on a 406 in a 2300 car and it ran a
string of low 9
second passes. I bought them for my 55, but the new coated
headers that
I had would not fit, and I had access to a set of aluminum
heads so I
used those.
I have over $600 in them but would entertain a
significantly lower
offer. They weigh about 65 pounds each; figure freight from
90505. I can Email
photos of them. I also have an old Edelbrock C4b Intake
manifold that I would take $50
for, and I have a 4 bbl aluminum manifold for a 64 Buick
300 that I paid
$100 for...will take $80. I also have a nitrous set up that
has an aluminum
tank and a plate. It comes with stainless lines. I don't
know if there is
any special deal about shipping the tank. I would take $175
for it.
If anyone has a 153 tooth aluminum flywheel for a one piece
seal small
blockmotor, I would be interested in buying it.

Hi Bob, The list is still working great.
For Luis and Tom,
Re; chassis or frames for 57 Chevy. I know the
Caprice/Impala from about 80-89
will work on a tri-five with body mount modifications.
I don't know of any other years that would work. Early
Impalas had an X-Frame
through 1964 so those are not at all compatible.
For Hugh Sieck, That sure sounds like one of the scams
going on out there right
now. The wording of the reply etc sounds like they will
send you a check for
over the amount you agreed on and ask you to send back the
difference. The check
they send you will most likely be counterfeit. We get

scams every week here.

Although most charities are legitimate, there are quite a
few charity scams. And
you certainly don't want to give your money to scammers!
Here are nine tips to ensure your money goes to worthy
causes:
1. Do some research on the charity. If you're trying to
figure out whether or
not some particular US charity is worthy of support, check
out:
==> http://www.give.org/reports/index.asp
They publish their standards for rating charities, and then
rate over hundreds
of different charities using these standards.
2. Don't give to charities where most of the money goes to
executive salaries,
administrative costs and fundraising. The website we just
recommended, Give.org,
presents a pie chart that shows the percentage of money
going to programs vs.
administration and fundraising.
3. Always find out the exact name of the charity before you
send a check. Many
fraudulent organizations select names that sound very
similar to a legitimate
charity.
4. Make sure the charity is tax-exempt under section
501(c)(3) of the Internal
Revenue Code (again, for US subscribers). Otherwise, you
won't be able to deduct
your contributions on income taxes.
5. Never donate if the caller uses high-pressure tactics or
insists you donate
now.
6. Always ignore phone calls, letters and emails telling
you that you won money
or a prize from a charity, unless you specifically entered
a contest. These are
almost always fraudulent.
7. Avoid charities that won't send you written material
before you donate
because it's 'too costly.' If an organization has something
to hide, it's very
likely fraudulent.
8. Don't give cash donations, especially to door-to-door
solicitors. If you know
the charity and want to contribute, never write a check
made out to 'cash.'
Always make sure the check is payable to the full name of
the charity -- that
way it can be cancelled if you suspect fraud.
9. Never give your credit card number to door-to-door
solicitors, or in response
to a bulk email. In fact, don't give your credit card
number unless you are
completely confident about the authenticity and good
intentions of the charity.
Otherwise, you may find yourself the victim of credit card
fraud -- or even
worse -- identity fraud.
Editor's note. Sandy, that is great information. I am glad
to pass it along.

The "acceptance" is a scam.
A friend of mine almost fell for the same thing. At some
time you will be asked
to put some of your money at risk. His was that they wanted
him to pay the
transport company and he could keep the "extra" money in
the money order.
(working on your greed instinct). The bad guys use time to
their advantage since
that instrument has several clearing houses to pass
through.
When you sign a negotiable document (check or money order)
you are guaranteeing
payment of that instrument. You will have no one to go back
to (UAR). By then
the car is gone and you are responsible to your bank for
the bad instrument.
His gut told him something wasn't right and he called the
bank. The fraud dept.
said that this is all to common. DON'T DO IT. Find someone
that you can check on
before giving up the car and title.

Re: A.B.2683, S.B.708, S.B. 42
Honorable Senators of The California Senate Transportation
Committee,
This is a ridiculous and redundant action that was formerly
studied, researched
and considered, and because of it's minimal impact on the
solution to the
reduction of air pollution, should remain "As Is"
Reason: "This law, enacted in 1997, acknowledges the
minimal impact of
vehicles 30-years old and older on vehicle emissions and
air quality. Vehicles
30-years old and older constitute a small portion of the
overall vehicle
population in California and are regarded by clean air
regulators and industry
watchdogs as a poor source from which to look for emissions
reduction" Sam
Memmoloo.
For those who are unfamiliar with the history of the
original S.B 708, and what
would change, I submit the following:
Existing law in California exempted all pre-1974 vehicles
from emissions testing
until Jan. 1, 2003. After Jan. 1, vehicles 30-years old and
older are exempt
from emissions testing. This law, enacted in 1997,
acknowledges the minimal
impact of vehicles 30-years old and older on vehicle
emissions and air quality.
More History and Facts:
"Currently, there are several types of vehicles that are
exempt from Smog Check:
motorcycles, diesel-powered vehicles, all 1973 and older
vehicles, vehicles four
model-years old and newer, as well as non-combustion engine
vehicles. SB 42
(Kopp), enacted in 1997 (Chapter 801), exempted 1966-1973
vehicles from the Smog
Check program and created the 30-year rolling exemption
that will take effect in
2003. The 30-year rolling exemption will exempt post-1973
vehicles from Smog
Check when each model year becomes 30 years old. Thus, in
2003, vehicle model
year 1974 will be exempt. In 2004, vehicle model year 1975
will be exempt, and
so on. Prior to SB 42, only pre-1966 vehicles were exempted
from the program."
Rob Oglesby, Legislative Director Air Resources Board
Bills That Tried To Takeaway SB42: Since the implementation
of SB42, there have
been three attempts to dismantle SB42. All three attempts
failed. The first
attempt to take away the rolling exemption was SB1811 by
Senator Maurice
Johannessen in 2000. The second attempt, SB800, was also by
Senator Maurice
Johannessen in 2001. Both bills were lobbied down. SB1811
was vetoed by the
Governor. SB800 was gutted and changed into a construction
defects bill. The
third bill was SB708 by Senator Deane Florez in 2003. That
was also lobbied down
with major objections coming in from all over the State
(including Jay Leno)
before it got to its first hearing. To read the bills, go
back to the State
Senate Web Site and Select the appropriate session. Based
on the large organized
successful car lobby, the rhetorical question is: whose
Next Who wants to
take apart SB42?
How Many Cars Does SB42 Cover? : California Air Resources
Board made a
presentation to the California Inspection and Maintenance
Review Committee on
March 26, 2003 in which they said there are 416000 PRE-74
vehicles. That number
may vary up to 500000 depending on whom you talk to, but
for sake of discussion
assume 416,000. That is 416000 PRE-74s of all ages in a
fleet of 32,000,000
vehicles in California:
1920s Tbuckets driven only to shows or trailered.
1930s, 1940s or 1950s vehicles driven only to shows or
trailered (many)
Many vehicles registered as Historic Vehicles (Historic
means they can be
driven to shows, in parades and for maintenance Not as
daily drivers.).
Some of that group from all ages are modified for racing
(PRO Street) but are
trailered to the race course. They are definitely not
daily drivers.
There is a large contingent of Military Vehicles that
only go to shows. Yet
they are registered. They are not daily drivers.
The Classic Car Club of America vehicles discussed below
(a select subset of
1925-1948 vehicles) are generally trailered to car shows
and then driven in to
the show.
Many of those vehicles have limited use (1500 to 2500
mile) insurance.
Many carry a 7500 mile insurance limitation such as mine.
They are not on the
road every day; they are only on the road for maintenance
and car shows.
Based on the above observations, it is a fair assumption
that 75-80% of those
vehicles are not on the road every day. That leaves
approximately 83,200 in a
fleet of 32,000,000 or of 1% as daily drivers. In the
hearings for SB42 that
number was considered insignificant. Senator Quentin Kopp
was known as Mr.
Transportation while in the State Senate. Those numbers
went through the Senate
and Assembly Transportation Committee plus the Senate and
Assembly
Appropriations Committee. The legislative committees did
not see any problem
with the bill.
Need I say more Senators and Legislators ? I relinquish my
time to
Assembly members and Senators that drive classic cars -
chic!
Sincerely,
Robert A. Rouge`

STOP MASS HOUSE BILL 1722
Massachusetts Bill to Ban the Sale/Installation of
Aftermarket Exhaust Systems
Continues to Move through Legislature
Although we thought we had successfully stalled this bill
in the Committee on
Public Safety earlier this year, a bill (H.B. 1722) to ban
the sale or
installation of an exhaust system which has been modified
in a manner which
will amplify or increase the noise emitted by the exhaust
continues to move
though the Massachusetts Legislature. It remains an
extremely damaging piece of
legislation. IT MAY BE COMING UP FOR A VOTE VERY SHORTLY-
PLEASE HELP!!!
After months of inactivity, H.B. 1722 was recently sent
back to the
Massachusetts House Rules Committee . If recommended for
passage by this
committee, the bill will be scheduled for a vote by the
Massachusetts House of
Representatives. It is PARAMOUNT that we act swiftly in
force again to finally
defeat this bill .
Please contact the Massachusetts Secretary of State's
office at 617-727-2828 to
find your local legislators. To find via the Internet:
HOUSE BILL 1722 ARGUMENT:
H.B. 1722 ignores the fact that aftermarket exhaust
systems are designed to
make vehicles run more efficiently without increasing
emissions.
H.B. 1722 does not supply law enforcement with a clear
standard to enforce,
allowing them to make subjective judgments on whether or
not a modified exhaust
system is in violation.
H.B. 1722 fails to recognize that aftermarket exhaust
systems offer
increased performance, which can make a vehicle safer by
improving its ability
to merge, pass, travel uphill, etc.
H.B. 1722 would make it difficult for hobbyists to replace
factory exhaust
systems with more durable, better performing options.
This bill tramples on the rights of vehicle enthusiasts in
Massachusetts!!

For Luis Felix & Tom Beang,
There is no interchange frame for the '57. Only '57
Chevrolet
chassis frames will work. There are some differences
between models
also; there are additional body support brackets hardtops
and
convertibles have a big cross member. Generally, any '57
frame can be
modified to fit any '57 body without too much trouble with
the
exception of convertibles.
There are no Impala chassis frames that will directly
interchange.
'70s Impala frames are "perimeter" frames, like the '55-57
frames and
have been used by rodders to get rid of the straight axle
suspension of
early cars ('40s), but this is a lot of work even for the
pros. You
would have to remove & reinforce certain body braces, make
& place new
body support brackets on the frame, etc. It would be much
easier to use
an original '57 frame or buy an aftermarket replacement
frame.
Editor's note. Anyone know of an aftermarket frame vendor.

Bob,, I was jarred in to action here by a few messages from
the last edition of
the Chevy List. First I just HAVE to comment on the
question of using a Caprice
chassis under a 5,6 or 7 Chevy. Hey guys! THINK about the
long term consequences
of what you are doing when you put a sub-frame or late
model chassis under your
car. I see SO many of cars done with various sub-frame,
frame clips, complete
frame installation/conversions that are OUTDATED! When you
use a "late model"
chassis, it will SOON be out dated and probably any
replacement parts will be
obsolete! Example, the Plymouth Volare clip was really
popular about ten years
ago. Now you can't get any repair parts and there are no
more of these cars in
the junk yards! SO be VERY careful about replacing that
chassis! I do think that
if you are going for a completely new upgrade you should
consider a chassis that
is of all new construction built by one of the guys that
offer these. I have
seen several cars with these new rolling chassis and they
sure are nice.
The next note I want to respond to is the one from Hugh
that has his 56 Chevy
for sale and got an offer from the overseas buyer for more
than he is asking...
Well, has ANYONE on this list that has offered a car for
sale on any website NOT
received one of these offers? They are ALL phony in my
opinion! I have started
to reply by telling them that, first, give me the contact
information of you
shipping agent. Then I ask them to send the money to the
shipping agent so I can
pick it up in CASH when I deliver the car. If you are too
far from the "shipping
agent" I tell them, send me the money. The car nor the
title leave my hands
until I receive full payment by direct wire transfer. Or
guaranteed bank check
which will be held on deposit for the number of days (my
bank tells me the
number) necessary for clearance. Most of these guys never
contact me again. I
have had a couple try different angles but I think that
they have figured out
the scam is not working as well as before. Most of these
guys try for the
overspent amount to be returned to them. I think that most
never expect to get
your car out of the scam just a few bucks. Real overseas
buyers know that
additional costs will need to be paid to deliver the car to
the point of
shipping and possibly other items that may inconvenience
the seller. When I sell
a car to an overseas buyer, I do ask for and prefer
dedicated container
shipping. I do all the container loading myself. I don't
want some guys out in a
shipping company running the car into the side of the
container, tying it down
with old rope or nothing at all! Or sending by "roll-on
roll-off" where the car
is exposed to treasure hunters that may strip the car while
in transit.
Now on to another question from the couple attending Hot
August Nights in Reno
with the 67 Vette. Your note said that you had a quote for
$1000.00 each way
from Southern Cal to Reno. Hmmm, That is the highest number
I have every seen
for moving a car that distance! Check the internet, yellow
pages, call a couple
of the collector car sales stores in your area. You should
pay no more than 400
each way for this with insurance. Right now the transport
companies are pretty
busy bringing cars into the L.A. area to ship overseas. The
dollars is low in
the world market so overseas buyers are moving on this
advantage. Transporters
are leaving L.A. with partial loads. Make a few calls! By
The Way, I will be at
Hot August Nights at the Swap Meet and Car's For Sale Event
at the Reno
Livestock Center. I am an event sponsor (I-VAN Collector
Vehicle Appraisal
Service www.I-van.org) and will be doing appraisals and
inspections for buyers
and sellers. Look for me at the entrance gate and inside
the "Cool Car Showroom"
next to the information booth.
And LAST fro now. was the insurance problem from the person
that wanted to drive
their Nomad more than the insurance will allow. It is
pretty simple to get the
coverage you want. State Farm keeps coming in on top as far
as I can tell by my
customers that I do appraisals for. But nearly all the
specialty insurance
providers offer a form of what you need. Hagerty and J.C.
Taylor are tops. I'll
say this again, Be VERY careful about exactly what your
policy will do for you
if you have a claim! It is SO VERY alarming when something
happens and you find,
too late, that your are NOT covered.
Get an written appraisal, take it to your agent, ask them
what happens if next
year or down the road, the car is, damaged (while parked,
in the garage, on a
trailer, at a show, by someone with or without insurance,
stolen, burned,
etc......... And Good Luck! I'm finished now.

I hope one of your list members has an answer for this
question. The answer is for my son's class in High School.
What Pontiac car in the 60s had a 4 cylinder motor that was
in reality their V8 that was cut in half to make the 4?
This sounds like an old wives tale .
Could it really have been true?
"PONTIAC TEMPEST, my Aunt had a new one, not a bad looking
car"
You walk into a place and you see a Harvey Wallbanger. Are
you likely to be in a Home Depot
or somewhere else.

Hugh,
This sounds exactly like a scam that was happening last
year, except the
country is different.

Greetings, Bob,
Another great weekly List read. I think that guy who got a
message regarding his
Chevy is the target of a rip-off. A scam, pure and simple.
They have a check
that is 'higher' than the amount he wants for his classic.
The next step will be
for them to ask for a 'refund' of the difference. Of
course, their check will
not be worth the paper it is printed on, and he'll be
giving them 'good money.'
I get about ten scams a week from various con artists. Most
disguise themselves
as sick and dying heirs to large fortunes--usually long
hard to pronounce names
of women or sons, mostly from "third world" countries--who
want to spread their
wealth before they pass on. Others are barristers, or
attorneys, representing
folks who need to get their money out of one country or
another.
I guess they do this because the Internet has made it so
easy. They don't even
have to pay for phone calls or postage stamps anymore. I
think it was P.T.
Barnam that said: "there's a sucker born every minute." He
was right a hundred
years ago and he's still right.
Have a great weekend, Bob.

Bob...Some stuff
Johnkk asked about the 4 cylinder Pontiac. They were used
in early 60's
Tempests that had the trans mounted at the
rearend....Mickey Thompson
set some world's speed records with these engines.
You might get a Harvey Wallbanger at a Home Depot, but
since it is made
with Vodka and Galliano, it is more likely found in a
club....
I have some stuff for sale:
I have a pair of Chevy Racing 292 Turbo heads. These are
cast iron
angle plug heads that have been professionally built. They
have been ported
and
polished (Takes a FelPro 1205 gasket) and flowed around 290
cfm at .600
lift. They have stainless 2.08/1.65 valves and 1.55 (?)
Isky springs
for a Roller cam. They also have guide plates and 3/8"
screw in studs.
I ran these one day on a 406 in a 2300 car and it ran a
string of low 9
second passes. I bought them for my 55, but the new coated
headers that
I had would not fit, and I had access to a set of aluminum
heads so I
used those.
I have over $600 in them but would entertain a
significantly lower
offer. They weigh about 65 pounds each; figure freight from
90505. I can Email
photos of them. I also have an old Edelbrock C4b Intake
manifold that I would take $50
for, and I have a 4 bbl aluminum manifold for a 64 Buick
300 that I paid
$100 for...will take $80. I also have a nitrous set up that
has an aluminum
tank and a plate. It comes with stainless lines. I don't
know if there is
any special deal about shipping the tank. I would take $175
for it.
If anyone has a 153 tooth aluminum flywheel for a one piece
seal small
blockmotor, I would be interested in buying it.

Hi Bob, The list is still working great.
For Luis and Tom,
Re; chassis or frames for 57 Chevy. I know the
Caprice/Impala from about 80-89
will work on a tri-five with body mount modifications.
I don't know of any other years that would work. Early
Impalas had an X-Frame
through 1964 so those are not at all compatible.
For Hugh Sieck, That sure sounds like one of the scams
going on out there right
now. The wording of the reply etc sounds like they will
send you a check for
over the amount you agreed on and ask you to send back the
difference. The check
they send you will most likely be counterfeit. We get
several reports of those
scams every week here.

To Bob
I tried to send this to johnkk@cs.com but it was returned
as undeliverable. He
wanted to know if pontiac had a four cyl. engine that was
produced from half of
a V8 engine. The answer is yes.
In 1961 Pontiac Tempest had a 4cyl 195 cu in engine ( this
was the right half
of a 389),even a 4bbl version was available!.
I hope this helps your son with his class project. It is
not an old wives tale.

Although most charities are legitimate, there are quite a
few charity scams. And
you certainly don't want to give your money to scammers!
Here are nine tips to ensure your money goes to worthy
causes:
1. Do some research on the charity. If you're trying to
figure out whether or
not some particular US charity is worthy of support, check
out:
==> http://www.give.org/reports/index.asp
They publish their standards for rating charities, and then
rate over hundreds
of different charities using these standards.
2. Don't give to charities where most of the money goes to
executive salaries,
administrative costs and fundraising. The website we just
recommended, Give.org,
presents a pie chart that shows the percentage of money
going to programs vs.
administration and fundraising.
3. Always find out the exact name of the charity before you
send a check. Many
fraudulent organizations select names that sound very
similar to a legitimate
charity.
4. Make sure the charity is tax-exempt under section
501(c)(3) of the Internal
Revenue Code (again, for US subscribers). Otherwise, you
won't be able to deduct
your contributions on income taxes.
5. Never donate if the caller uses high-pressure tactics or
insists you donate
now.
6. Always ignore phone calls, letters and emails telling
you that you won money
or a prize from a charity, unless you specifically entered
a contest. These are
almost always fraudulent.
7. Avoid charities that won't send you written material
before you donate
because it's 'too costly.' If an organization has something
to hide, it's very
likely fraudulent.
8. Don't give cash donations, especially to door-to-door
solicitors. If you know
the charity and want to contribute, never write a check
made out to 'cash.'
Always make sure the check is payable to the full name of
the charity -- that
way it can be cancelled if you suspect fraud.
9. Never give your credit card number to door-to-door
solicitors, or in response
to a bulk email. In fact, don't give your credit card
number unless you are
completely confident about the authenticity and good
intentions of the charity.
Otherwise, you may find yourself the victim of credit card
fraud -- or even
worse -- identity fraud.
Editor's note. Sandy, that is great information. I am glad
to pass it along.
