    VC Chevys,

I have been looking through Chevy sites for quite a while
    now and came across
yours a while back. It is a nice site. You have a lot of
    nice cars.

The reason for this e-mail however, is a car I have for
    sale.

It is a 1957 Chevy 2 dr wagon (One of only 206 made) with
    the Belair option and
only 38,000 actual miles. It has some upgrades like a
new 327 and new 350 TH
tranny, 12 bolt, front discs, pwr steering, custom interior
    incl a cadillac pwr
front seat with limo rear footrests, carpeting throughout,
    stero, leather/vinyl
seats and dash, one piece Cal front bumper and a few more.
It is a very nice professional car. I listed with an
    online advertiser here in
Phoenix and it can be seen on their website. It is
    www.azcarsandtrucks.com.
Look it over and see what you think. Maybe you will know
    someone who has an
    interest.

    Thanks,

Bob, I have been reading the responses regarding your
    advice on purchasing cars
sight-unseen. I have some questions. In a long distance
    transaction, would it
be possible for a dishonest seller to substitute a sound
    car (ringer) for the
one he is offering to sell and submit that one to a third
    party for inspection?
Would you want to know the registration or other numbers to
    hopefully avoid this
situation? And would it be possible to put the purchase
    money in escrow to be
turned over to the buyer upon receiving and examining the
    vehicle? If this is
done, who would pay the shipping? The would-be buyer, I
    suppose.

We have purchased two cars sight-unseen. One through your
    list which was
honestly represented and we are pleased with, and one from
    a non-Ford list
seller which turned out to be a large collection of rust,
    sits hidden by a
fence, and is affectionately referred to as "Old Rusty".

    Thanks.

I have several but the one that I am working on now is a 55
    that was
hit in the front they missed the bumper but wipped out the

As you all certainly know, 2005 marks 50 years of the '55
    Chevy. An
interesting trivia fact is that we can dig out our 1955
    calendars and
re-use them in the year 2005. Yes, all the days match up
    the same, but
moon phases and some holidays will not.

For this and other interesting and/or useless facts, check
    out

    Detroit

    --------------------------------------------------------------

    From:Rebag9@aol.com

    Bob,

This is in reference to the question from Doug Dean on
    factory break in periods.
I visited one the GM powertrain plants in Detroit where
    they assembled the old
4.3 liter V-6 and V-8's for trucks. There are two things I
    saw them do:

1.) They cold crank the engine for a minute to see
    if there any loose
    parts.

2.) Next they put the engine on an overhead conveyor
    system and they go
to a test cell that's on a rotary platform. The engines
    are hooked up to
natural gas and water along with the electricals. The
engine is started and ran at
several RPM levels to check its vital signs ( oil
    pressure, airflow, etc.) they
are run for about 60 - 90 seconds, put back on the
conveyor, crated and shipped to the
    assembly plant.

I didn't see any test cells like the type I remember from
    my days working at
Caterpillar where the diesels were run for 20 minutes.
    Hopefully that will
answer his question. I would take it easy on the engine
    for at least a few
    hundred miles.

    To all,

I attended the get together at Bob's house this month
    and took pictures of
all who was there. I planned on adding them to my clubs web
    site like I did last
year for anybody who wanted to see Bob and some of the list
    members and their
cars. But sorry to say "Yahoo. Geocities" who host my site
    has frozen me out as
I have not updated my site lately.
I still have the digital pictures on my computer and if
    anybody would want to
see them just email me and I will email them to you. I do
    hope Bob continues
to have his list members get together each year, but
    hopefully next time there
will be more people and cars show up. I believe there was
only 7 or 8 cars there
this time where last year there may have been 3 times that
    many.
I know those of us that were there had a great time and
    enjoyed meeting each
other and swapping stories. And to those who got mixed up
    with my name, the car
    is named ALEX, I'm Kim.

See ya next year, I hope.

    Bob,

I should add that I've also backed away from buying a few
    cars sight unseen just
because I didn't feel comfortable after talking with the
    seller over the phone.
In fact, I subsequently learned that a friend would be
    traveling on company
business and would be glad to inspect one of these same
    cars during an upcoming
trip. After he did, my suspicions were confirmed!

I suppose I've been lucky, but one can usually do OK if you
    stop and heed those
uneasy feelings when they are present.

I think the trouble usually comes when on FAILS to heed the
    danger signs -- and
listens only to the glowing reports from the seller.

Still, I agree with you that a personal inspection is
always best -- at least in
those cases where the dollar amount at risk is more than
    one could comfortably
    write off.

    END DAMAGE,
$ 22,500.00. THE GUY BOUGHT IT SIGHT UNSEEN. THE PICTURE
    OF THE CAR
SHOWED THAT THE "FRONT END DAMAGE" RESULTED FROM THE CAR
    HITTING
A BRIDGE ABUTMENT AT ABOUT 140 MILES PER HOUR.
FROM THE SEATBACK FORWARD, THERE WAS ABOUT NOTHING LEFT,
ALTHOUGH WHAT WAS LEFT OF THE MOTOR WAS THERE. SUPPOSEDLY,
    THE
BUYER WAS ABLE TO WEASEL OUT OF BUYING THIS, AFTER HE HAD

    Dear Bob,

I came by on Saturday with my cousin Steve. Unfortunately
    neither of
usbrought an appropriate car. (actually I think yours was
    the wrong year
too) We did very much enjoy seeing the cars that were there
    and talking to
the owners. It's refreshing to meet new people and not get
    into, "where do
you work?" and "where did you go to college?"

I especially want to thank you and your wife for your
    gracious
hospitality. You both were so considerate, making everyone
    feel at ease and
providing many refreshments. The kindness you both showed
    to all was deeply
appreciated and way "above and beyond the call of duty".
    The cars were
cool, but you and your wife's hospitality was the high
    point for me.

If you're tired of over revving your engine, the best
    resolution is
a higher ratio Ring and Pinion gear. It improves mileage,
    increases
engine life and makes for a quieter ride.
Larry Jackson, 805-441-2627, Is considering making
    ring & pinion
gears with 3.36 ratio for 34 - 39 half ton trux. it also
    fits 34 - 36
Master Deluxe passenger cars. If you're interested, please
    call and
    let
him know. He needs a run of 25 before he can start. If no
    one is
    interested, it won't happened.
If you have a 1930 - 32 Chevy, he has already made 3.50
    gears for
those, with many accolades from the purchasers.

If you sell on e-bay, be aware of a scam. It works like
this. Someone buys something from you

Bob, just a note of warning for all those who wish to
transport their vehicles. Do not, under any
circumstances ship your vehicle by A-1 Auto Transport,
supposively located at 1802 N. Carson
    St. #21 2 - Carson City, Nevada - 89701 - 1-800-452-2880.
This is just a satellite office. They are
located in Watsonville, Calif. I recently contracted A-1 to
transport my 1956 Chev. wagon to
Spokane, Wash. from El Monte, Calif. The car was registered
at the BowTie Convention to be
held in Coeur d'Alene, Id. I gave the Co. over 2 weeks to
deliver the car. They picked it up 2 days
earlier than previously arranged. I called them on the due
date and they said they missed the truck
going to Spokane and they said that they guessed they
screwed up. Each time I got in touch with
them, they gave me a different location for the car. 1.
Portland, Ore. 2. Seattle, WA. and lastly, 3.
On a truck somewhere in No. Calif. It finally arrived in
Renton, Wash. on Sat. at a receiving
terminal with no delivery instructions, just our phone #
where we were staying in Liberty Lake,
Wa. We called Renton and asked about delivery. They said
that they were not affiliated with A-1
and had not scheduled a delivery to Spokane 'till Tues. As
the Show in Idaho was from
Mon.-Thurs., this did me no good. They said to fax them a
release and they would let me have
the car that night. We had to drive to Renton and pick up
the car. Upon delivery we noticed large
scratches in the door pillar, window frame and the 2 rear
    bumper guards were damaged +
someone had stolen the passenger side windshield arm &
wiper. To make a long story short, my
Insurance co. paid for the damages, etc. and is now in the
process of recovering some of the
claim expenses. So far, A-1 claims no responsibility for
said damage. So please let the members
know of this sad state of affairs and do not use A-1 Auto
    Transports.

    Thanks, Jim.

Do we have some funny laws in the U.S.? Here are a few
    samples. What do you think?

In Galveston Texas, it is against the law for camels to
    wander the streets unattended.

In Newton Kansas, it is against the law to drive buffalo
    through the streets.

In Arkansas, it is illegal to blindfold cows on the public
    highways.

In Norfolk, Virginia, it is against the law for hens to lay
eggs before 8AM and after 4 PM.

In Texas it is against the law to milk anybody else's cow.

In Dyersburg, Tennessee it is illegal for a girl to
telephone a guy asking for a date.

Kissing a stranger in Cedar Rapids, Iowa is illegal.

You must be my twin. Your taste in music is exactly like
mine. The tape you sent me of 50s
music did not have any songs I did not like. Thanks a lot.
I enjoyed all 8 hours of the tape. My
daughter watched the tape with me. She repeatedly said,
"Mom, did you really dress like the kids
    on the Dick Clark show?"

    THIS IS SCARY!

We actually received a call last week from the
    809 area code.
The woman said "Hey, this is Karen. Sorry I
    missed you--get back to
    us quickly.
Have something important to tell you." Then she
    repeated a phone
    number beginning with 809.
    We didn't respond.

Then this week, we received the following e-mail:

Subject: DON'T EVER DIAL AREA CODE 809, 284 AND 876

THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION PROVIDED TO US
    BY AT&T. DON'T
    EVER DIAL AREA CODE 809

This one is being distributed all over the US. This
    is pretty scary,
especially given the way they try to get you to
    call.
Be sure you read this and pass it on to all your
    friends and family so
    they don't get scammed!
    MAJOR SCAM:
Don't respond to Emails, phone calls, or web pages
    which tell you to call
    an "809" area Phone Number.

This is a very important issue of Scam Busters
    because it alerts you to
a scam that is spreading *extremely* quickly, can
    easily cost you $2400
or more, and is difficult to avoid unless you are
    aware of it.

We'd like to thank Verizon for bringing this scam
    to our attention.
This scam has also been identified by the National
    Fraud Information
Center and is costing victims a lots of money.

There are lots of different permutations of this
    scam.

    HERE'S HOW IT WORKS:

You w ill receive a message on your answering
    machine or your pager,
which asks you to call a number beginning with area
    code 809. The reason
you're asked to call varies. It can be to receive
    information about a
family member who has been ill, to tell you someone
    has been arrested,
died, to let you know you have won a wonderful
    prize, etc. In each
case, you are told to call the 809 number right
    away. Since there are
so many new area codes these days, people
    unknowingly return these calls.

If you call from the US, you will apparently be
    charged $2425 per-minute.
Or, you'll get a long recorded message The point
    is, they will try to
keep you on the phone as long as possible to
    increase the charges.
Unfortunately, when you get your phone bill, you'll
    often be charged
    more than $24,100.00.

    WHY IT WORKS:
The 809 area code is located in the British
    Virgin Islands
The 809 area code can be used as a "pay-per-call"
    number, similar to 900
numbers in the US. Since 80 9 is not in the US,
    it is not covered by
U.S. regulations of 900 numbers, which require that
    you be notified and
warned of charges and rates involved when you call
    a pay-per-call"
    number.

There is also no requirement that the company
    provide a time period
during which you may terminate the call without
    being charged. Further,
whereas many U.S. homes that have 900 number
    blocking to avoid these
kinds of charges, do not work in preventing calls
    to the 809 area code.

We recommend that no matter how you get the
message, if you are asked to
call a number with an 809 area code that you don't
    recognize, just
    disregard the message.

Be wary of e-mail, or calls, asking you to call an
    809 area code number.
It's important to prevent becoming a victim of
    this scam, since trying
to fight the charges afterwards can become a real
    nightmare. That's
because you did actually make the call. If you
    complain, both your
local phone company and your long distance carrier
    will not want to get
involved and will most likely tell you that they
    are simply providing
the billing for the foreign company. You'll end up
    dealing with a
foreign company that argues they have done nothing
    wrong.

Please forward this entire message to your friends,
    family and
colleagues to help them become aware of this scam.
